Brandon Jennings Signs With Under Armour

by Ben Osborne

Just got the following from our friends at Under Armour. In its own way, signing with Under Armour is as radical as going to Europe. In both cases, we respect his individuality and wish him the best. We’ll have a lot more on Brandon in the mag and on the site during the season.

Jennings, the First High School Basketball Player to Bypass College to Play Professionally in Europe, Forms Landmark Partnership with Under Armour

Baltimore, MD (September 24, 2008) – Under Armour (NSYE:UA) announced today a multi-year partnership with basketball phenom, Brandon Jennings. The newly formed relationship reinforces Under Armour’s mission to become the world’s number one performance athletic brand and underscores its growing commitment to the sport of basketball.

The signing of Jennings comes on the heels of the brand’s recent announcement that it would outfit the University of Maryland mens’ and women’s basketball teams head-to-toe next year. Under Armour also sponsored the third annual Boost Mobile Elite 24 high school basketball showcase this past summer as well as the sponsorship of the Capital Classic last April.

Jennings, widely regarded as one of the most electrifying and charismatic point guards in the nation, is making history as the first U.S. high school player to immediately pursue a professional basketball career overseas before becoming eligible for the 2009 NBA Draft. Jennings recently signed with Pallacanestro Virtus Roma of the Italian pro league.

“We are proud to welcome Brandon Jennings as the first Under Armour basketball athlete,” said Kevin Plank, Under Armour, Chairman and CEO. “He is an extremely talented and fearless player with the skill set to become a game-changer internationally. Brandon’s attitude and his dedication to hard-work make him the ideal athlete to represent the Under Armour brand.”

As the most prolific single-season scorer in the history of basketball powerhouse, Oak HillAcademy, Jennings averaged 35.5 points, 7.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game in his senior year of high school. His on-court performance earned him a number of high school basketball’s most prestigious awards including the 2008 Naismith High School Basketball Player of the Year, 2007-08 Gatorade Player of the Year – Virginia, 2008 Parade Magazine Player of the Year and 2008 EA Sports Player of the Year. In addition, he led his 2006-2007 team to a 42-0 record and a No. 1 ranking in the USA Today Super 25 national rankings.

“I am extremely excited to be the first athlete selected to represent Under Armour Basketball,” said Jennings. I’ve always prided myself on being one step ahead of the pack and true to my beliefs like my journey to play professionally in Europe. I look forward to my role as a global ambassador for Under Armour basketball.”

“Brandon has the ability to perform at the highest levels and the personality to capture the imagination of the public,” said basketball advisor to Jennings, Sonny Vaccaro. He is without a doubt one of the most driven players that I have ever watched and by choosing to play in Europe as a high school player, he is doing what no other basketball player has ever done. This will go down in history as a landmark decision…. from Compton to Rome….Brandon Jennings did it first.”

In October 2008, Under Armour will launch a special Brandon Jennings blog on www.underarmour.com. The blog will allow fans the opportunity to follow Brandon’s experiences in Rome and his pursuit of his athletic goals.

cool. I thought Under Armour just made those things you rock under the jesery to obsorb all the sweat, but maybe they can lay down some claims in the shoe game as well. I dont think anybody will really want to buy these, because all americans are ‘ignorant’ in their consumption choice, and if it dont got a Swoosh or a Jumpman (and sometimes a reebok symbol) they wont buy it.

Why did he sign with UA … because hes a smart kid. He will be making great money, have his own shoe. Sh!t, we otta learn something fro him. And yes they shouldn’t make shoes but for a cool 10 mill … better believe it!!!

  • http://birdmonster.blogspot.com tenorca

Does Brandon Jennings dribble like Stephen Jackson? Sure looks like it.

the pictures of UA b-ball shoes I’ve seen are pretty clean

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

^the only shoes they have made to this point are trainers/running shoes.

  • Captain America

An excellent move by Jennings. It raises his profile at home while he toils elsewhere.

  • real deal

strictly a $$$ move. i know K1X was in the mix, but i doubt the UA $$$ was better. K1X got dem euros. i think he just wanted to be #1 which is cool i guess. outside of the tights they make, the gear and shoes are garbage. he will be outta there in 3 years.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com 9th Wonder

No one on the corner got swagger like us, swagger like us.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

9th Wonder does have a point, his hi-top fade was his trademark. He should grow it back in a hurry.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Who is the 9th Wonder? He’s a new Hibachi dude? His link is reading that. DP, Hursty, anyone?

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

my guess is its either DP or PP or some stoner who learned to use a keyboard

  • CP3 Prodigy

NO!! Brandon you were my fav………

  • Jumpman2323

hmm lets think about the real reason he’s going to europe and signed with under armour. this is the greadiest prick in all of sports. GO TO COLLEGE WINN THE NCAA AND BE THE 1 PICK. then you can rock the swoosh and make millions and wear shoes that dont fall apart like UA’s do.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

    ^is that sarcasm or serious?

  • http://www.slamonline.com GotHandles?

UA is dope and this kid is murdering the game. Make that $ Iverson Part 2.

  • Heals

I don’t care if he signed with Snickers, as long as he gets himself some guaranteed money…

  • http://slamonline.com Matt Caputo

    it’s gotta be the shoes….?

  • http://fjsdklf.com Jukai

    Heals has got it!

  • King David

this dude is sick i cant wait to see him in the NBA

  • http://birdmonster.blogspot.com tenorca

This kid is smart. Instead of getting used by the NCAA and not getting an education, he’s getting pro experience, a different kind of education, and millions of dollars. Bra. Vo.

  • dfrance

I never thought And 1 shoes would take off either. I respect him for taking a chance… thoug it’s not much of a chance since he’s getting paper out of the deal!

  • http://bbal bbal

Where can I get a pair?

  • B. Long

I told Lang about this rumor over the weekend. I must be ahead of the game.

  • B. Long

    Jumpman2323 is obviously Lute Olson.

  • JPrice

The sheople that critize BJ are just scared to take risk. He should be straight as long as he keeps working on his game.

The Under Armour basketball shoes I saw look official.

  • JPrice

“his hi-top fade was his trademark”

Bring back the Fade!!!, Bring back the Fade!!!

  • http://fjsdklf.com Jukai

While I still don’t think this will help Jennings stock in the long run, he’s sure playing it smart. Keeping his name in the US, this kid (or his agent) is not dumb.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Why is Slam reprinting press releases? That’s not cool at all.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

It’s greedy to refuse to play basketball for free for an organization making billions? Hmmm, I’ve always defined greed differently.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics/ Moose

Jukai, his name will stay in the US. As one of the most hyped (or the most) players in the 2009 draft class.

  • B. Long

@Allenp: Lute just got upset because he saw a headline that read “Brandon Jennings signs with U.A.” and it brought up bad memories.

  • http://jonesonthenba.blogspot.com Nate Jones

IIf these numbers are correct, it’s not a very good deal:

$250K per year for 4 years with someone that has the game, personality, and buzz of Brandon is a very poor deal. Especially if he is going to be the face of the brand. Derrick Rose is practically a mute and is getting paid over $1 Million per season.

  • http://jonesonthenba.blogspot.com Nate Jones

Rose is also not going to be the face of the adidas brand, whereas Jennings will be the face of UA basketball. $250K is way to low. Of course he is still much better off doing this than going to college and getting nothing. Maybe there are some incentives in the deal that aren’t being announced.

  • newbeginning2

my son brandon jennings is a beast at lest he signed with somthing. he is da real deal

  • B. Long

I read a story about the creator of Under Armor in Maxim once and it was talking about how he was basicly the only employee of his company starting out and he singlehandly got Georgia Tech’s football program to sign with him and then it blew up. Thats hustle, homie.

  • http://jonesonthenba.blogspot.com Nate Jones

The more I look at those numbers and everything that Sonny is saying, the more I think that it has to be a mistake by Chris Broussard. No way he is taking a deal for only $250K per year to be the face of a brand.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

“This will go down in history as a landmark decision…. from Compton to Rome….Brandon Jennings did it first.” Gee Sonny, hyperbolize much?

  • USA 4 LIFE

thats a dumb move on so many levles under armour basketball wehat the hell

  • B. Long

Sonny is the Don King of the sneaker industry.

  • http://www.pistonscast.com John W. Davis

He is no Ricky Rubio! LOL OVER RATED! CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Who the f*ck is ’9th Wonder’? Its not PP since I haven’t heard from him in months, RV is not like that. I assume its DP though, ‘my swag’. If its not any one of you 3 then Im calling the interweb police.

  • fluxland

A Nate Jones sighting on here.. nice to see a legit commentator amongst the kids. Breaking down the numbers, nice!

  • MC Shan

Jennings is the beginning. His name speaks for itself. (Genesis) I am proud of your accomplishments. Good luck in all that you do. We all know that the sun rises in the East, but it sets in the West, Brandon Jennings, you are the best. Keep G-D first and put back into your neighborhood. California Rising Star

  • feezy24

he shoulda kept his old hair its dope

  • Nathalie

honestly, this kid is set. this makes his transition and under armour’s very easy overseas. in all likelyhood it could just take him 4 years to get to the NBA, (not really, but my guess is at least two) and if he’s got a great personality like you say. he’ll sign with someone else.

under armour scares me though…watch out nike, don’t wait to late

  • MvP

he should have singed with a shoe company instead
UA sucks at making shoes for basketball

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Brandon Jennings > Ricky Rubio

  • Teddy-the-Bear

9th Wonder is Gilbert Arenas. Sup man.

  • niQ

    Straight outta Compton, huh?

  • HI TOP

Dacre thats not the shoe, thats a training shoe. Everybody will see the test shoe come october, not a bad look for young mr jennings.

  • http://www.kobehowmyasstaste.com Tony B

OMG is that 12 year old dribbling phenom Jerry Garcia? That kid never grew older did he….

  • andrew

I’m sick of these apparel companies jumping on the shoe bandwagon… This is not UA’s area, and finding a factory in China that’ll throw together a mish-mash of other brands’ most basic technology to sell at US$75 that should really sell for $30 is too easy these days. UA will have nothing on Nike for years – I’ve seen Nike’s marketing campaign for the next 6 months, they’ve not a thing to worry about. Plus, the proof’s in the pudding – you can guarantee that UA won’t have a shoe to match anything that Nike makes for at least three years.

  • slamfan4life

cant wait to see him in the nba, the Derrick Rose can whoop his a$$ everyday

  • http://jonesonthenba.blogspot.com Nate Jones

Andrew…If you think that is what UA is going to do then you haven’t been paying attention them as a company. That company doesn’t rush to do anything. They will come up with their own technologies and will come up with a solid marketing campaign for basketball. Their growth has been organic. If you go through high schools, UA has a big prominence on campus. These kids are choosing to wear UA stuff. UA has their ear, so if they handle this entry into basketball right, they could have something. Obviously they are likely not going to ever catch up to Nike in basketball, but remember that converse probably used to say the same thing about Nike when they were an up and coming company.

I agree with you on the Nike campaign for this season. Nike is trying to go back to shoes that have casual looks that you can wear off the court with technologies that are superior on the court (the formula that makes the Jordan line so hot). LeBron and Kobe’s shoes have both been spectacular performance shoes, but no one would dare wear them off the court. If you see there shoes for this coming season (Zoom Kobe IV and Zoom LeBron VI), you realize that Nike has taken notice of that and is trying to go in that direction.

On another note, it seems Broussard has changed the figures on the Jennings UA deal from $1Mil for 4 years to $2Mil for 4 years. That’s a much better deal!
