SLAM Presents On Sale Now!

Kobe and LeBron: The two biggest stars. One big magazine.

slampresentskobelebronbigby Ben Osborne / @bosborne17

Oh, how I dreamed of walking into the media room at the Finals and dropping this on the table that holds the day’s clips, quotes and stats…

But hey, shit happens. The Cavs were worse than we thought, and the Celtics were a whole lot better.lebronhighschool

Those dreams were just about the ego boost that comes from timing something right, though—they don’t reflect on a product that isn’t about this month anyway: It’s about careers.

Simply put, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James exist on a different level than the rest of the players in the NBA. Even if there are nights when other guys can play as well as them, there are never nights when anyone is a bigger star. This is true on TV, in arenas, and, increasingly, around the globe.

SLAM’s publisher and I—with the backing of the rest of our staff—have been wanting to do an issue like this (flip covers, 100 pages, with each guy getting 50, and a dope pullout poster in the middle to separate them) for a good 18 months now. But it took time to gather up the stories, build up the photo archives, and get Nike on board with some ad support. We finally got all the key commitments around late March and slotted this in to drop during the Conference Finals. Well, here we are.

Again, the professional side of me wishes LeBron’s Cavs were still on a collision course with Kobe’s Lakers to play in a Finals that might have set TV ratings records for the NBA. But the fan side of me, who has obviously 72825116NB_DNA041618046read through this issue 20 times already, knows that the mag—which will be on newsstands for three months and at simbackissues.com until it sells out—is great regardless of who is playing in the Finals.

What makes it so great? Hard to know where to even begin answering that question.

We re-ran the best cover stories we’ve ever done on these guys, done by writers such as Cheo Hodari Coker, Scoop Jackson, Russ Bengtson, Ryan Jones and Lang Whitaker. We ran incredible photos, from exclusive shoots of these guys in high school through incredible action photos that we combed through Getty Images to find. We wrote new stories about them both, covering everything from their early days as players to their on-court footwear histories to their current roles as the NBA’s biggest names.

Trust me: if you like one or both of these players, and/or just want a keepsake of NBA basketball in 2010, you need this magazine. Look for it on newsstands everywhere next week.

Too bad we don’t get to see them “get it on”

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

“We re-ran the best cover stories we’ve ever done on these guys” – I was sold on buying this until I read that. SLAM, I love y’all, but when you guys come out with these special issues, why not make it truly special and all-new instead of having us pay money for a bunch of regurgitated articles we already have? I know it later says “we wrote new stories on them both” but that probably means like, two new articles like the Jordan issue had. Yay… that being said….I’ll probably still cop the issue. Damn it.

  • Nash

    ……..copped,

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

    Wow! I’m with Myles.

  • Elliott

They should just let these guys get their own magazine. Let them be the editors.

  • Nash

And yeah Enigmatic, Slam is getting lazy like that. But that’s old news now. I still remember the Slam presents Jordan mag, evreything was new and exclusive. And now we get the BEST old stories And some nice new stories too! Oh well, at least they don’t put out one issue every 2 months like they used to…..

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

@Myles. This should be all over our Facebook this weekend.
@Enigmatic. I think a mix of old and new content really works for us. I suppose the small percentage of people who collect every SLAM ever and memorize the stories could be turned off by some stuff they’ve read before, but I’ve WORKED HERE and at least copy read every issue we’ve pulled from and still don’t remember all the great writing in some of these stories. Plus, people like Scoop are no longer allowed to write for us, and I doubt we could afford Cheo. So to be able to re-run their stuff and let MANY fans who never read it enjoy it seems great to me. It also serves as a great time capsule of their careers. If we want to do a 6-page story on Kobe as a second-year player, why assign a new one now? We did a great version of that in 1998!
Also, to read the players’ quotes from 98, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, etc etc is really amazing. ALSO, even in the cases where parts of stories have been re-run, the way the stories are designed is completely different, and most of the photos in this issue have never been run in SLAM. This is all just words from me. Go to bookstore, flip through it, and make your own decision. I predict you (as in Engimatic but also everyone else on this site) will like it.

  • http://myspace.com/dontdiecindy Bryan

    ill like half of it.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@ Ben – OK, you raised some great points, and I may have jumped to the conclusion that I would own every article already, especially since, come to think of it, wifey threw away like HALF MY COLLECTION once when I committed some long-forgotten infraction (I STILL give her hell for that). Of course, I end up buying almost anything y’all put out anyways (except Kicks, can’t afford most of the shoes in there anyways) so you could’ve just told me “Shut up and buy it!” And I would’ve been like, “Aight, bet.”

  • LA Huey

Me rikey. I won’t read it right away but it’ll be nice for the slow summer weeks…btw, LOL @Bryan

  • http://hoopmixtape.ning.com/ Simon S.Y Lawy

why don’t slam put someone else? like Kg,he’s still in the playoff. Lebroooom who??? Kobe vs Kg would be better

  • NigerianLaker

Seriously, LeBron has that much of a glittering career to own the exact half of this kinda issue?
    The logic is faulty.
    The economics, fantastic.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

Nice. Good reasoning, Ben on why the reruns are important along with the new…cant wait to get this!

  • Ill Will

There’s a generation of SLAM readers that can’t fathom this, but … given the precedent you guys set for special collectors’ issues (as far as I know, Jordan is the only other guy to get one) … I don’t know how you justify doing Kobe and LeBoron at this point in their careers. LeBron hasn’t won anything and Kobe hasn’t won enough. But I will probably buy it anyway.

Can we make everyone take an entry-level econ class before they post on the site?
Like every other magazine that has ever existed, Slam is a business first.
The people who run the business came up with this idea because they thought it would sell.
The people who handle the editorial content were then charged with making it dope.
If you generally like Slam’s editorial content, and you have an affinity for either of these players, you’ll probably really like the issue.
    Otherwise, don’t buy it.
But please don’t waste your time saying it’s lazy to recycle content; there IS some new content, and the recycled content is advertised as such, and no one’s making you buy it.
And please don’t question the “justification” of this issue existing. Like everything else that exists in America, it exists because the people who handle the money want it to exist.
I know we all need stuff to complain about, but if you want to complain that capitalism exists, maybe a Slam special issue shouldn’t be your first target.
Unless you’ve already railed against BP today. In which case, as you were.

How To Buy This Issue…you can go to a bookstore or newsstand within the next week and it should be out. or you can go to simbackissues.com RIGHT NOW and order one. it is listed with the kobe cover.

@niemand: unfortunately, this issue doesn’t come with your regular subscription. your best bet is either seeing if it’s at a store near you or going to our back issues site, simbackissues.com.

@Ryan I also think teachers should make more money than athletes, that they shouldn’t charge so much for basketball tickets, and the price of gas is a rip-off!!!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

You’re really going to put LeBron James and Kobe Bryant on the cover… AGAIN?! At THIS point in their careers (for Kobe, okay that kind of makes sense), you’re going to make two special edition magazines, with OLD content?
It looks like a lot of work went into these, so I’m not belittling anything you guys did, but to me it just seems a little premature to do these. With Jordan it made perfect sense.

  • http://slamonline.com Susan Price

    @ryan jones: feisty today, no?

@vankov: i just spoke to our zinio people, and this issue is NOT available there, so check the back issues site and you should be good.

  • The D Train

Mentioned this in a post a couple of weeks ago, but I LOVE issues like this. I purposely kept old Street & Smith-style mags from yesteryear because I thoroughly enjoy re-reading old interviews/articles. With the proper hind-sight available, they always make for a classic read. And I say that not even being a particular fan of either Lebron or Kobe. Great idea, and would definitely not argue if they expanded to include some of the SLAM favs over the years: KG, Nash, Iverson. Not sure that it’ll happen since they are not the new hotness, but if you value NBA history then you would definitely enjoy retrospectives on a bunch of cats not named Kobe or Lebron.

  • http://slamonline.com Chris O’Leary

The two best and most talked about basketball players on the planet, a combined 21 seasons between them, sharing the last three MVPs…I think a SLAM Presents is warranted.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

always fun to read old articles with hind-sight like D Train said. i remember reading an article about some high school kid in the spree/T-bug “Two Fly” cover issue. the kid’s name? Kevin Garnett.

  • LA Huey

Like D Train said, I wouldn’t mind more of these special issues with article compilations on more players. AI, KG, Shaq even

Hi Susan. Please send me 5 of these. And a few copies of 139 while you’re at it. Thanks!

  • http://nba.com Reflex

These are hot but I feel like Bron doesn’t deserve this, I know he sells and that ultimately is the point but it still doesn’t feel right somehow, that being said, they’re both really good

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Y’all realize that SLAM decided on the covers well before the conference finals began, right? And, as Ryan noted, the main goal is to sell magazines, because then you sell eyes to advertisers, right?
Look people, if SLAM only catered to what people wanted to read, it would have to charge you like $20 for an issue, if not more, to pay for the production costs and editorial expenses, not to mention the other costs of running a business. They can charge you what they charge you, particularly if you subscribe, because the money you spend at the newstand or on a subscription is not how they support their operations.
Your purchase is a number they use to prove their circulation, which they in turn present to advertisers, who pay them a certain amount per ad because they want their ads to reach a certain amout of eyes.
In short, stop complaining that you can’t get exactly what you want from a magazine when you’re not willing to pay the full cost of getting what you want.
Enjoy the product and stop whining about who else “deserved” to be on a magazine cover like being on the cover of SLAM will have any real impact on a player’s career.
John Stockton turned out just fine without a whole bunch of SLAM love.

  • http://www.drose232121@aim.com tommy jones

If i am subscribed will i get this in the mail or do i have to go out and buy it seperately?

  • Heals

If all these LeBron and Kobe covers earn enough for/enable SLAM to make other issues more worthwhile then it is a small price to pay in the long run (and a good looking one at that, props for always creating covers that catch eye!)…

DWYANE WADE IS PISSED AT SLAM FOR THIS. How come everyone says its mr bean, bronnie, then everyone else? Wade is up there with them. In 05-07 did kobe stop being top2-3 just cuz his team sucked? Is lebron not top 2-3 cuz he hasnt been to finals in four years? is lebron trash cuz he has yet to win a finals game? Wade hasnt had even a decent team since 07. I hope so badly he gets major help this summer so all the experts and everyone else will suddenly remember wade is as great as bean n bron

Cant say that about bronnie and mr bean. Both of whom have had their heart questioned in the playoffs, and for good cause. That was the last time wade will go out in the first round until hes 36

I’ll mostly stick with what I said before: Pick it up at a store, look at it, and decide if you want to buy it. If you like SLAM, you will like this. I promise.
Also, I would like to do more of these on other players, too. We just need to know that they’d sell enough to cover our costs and that we have time to do them on top of all our regular issues. AI, KG, Wade…all possibilities. Let’s see how this one does.

To answer Tommy jones..YES, go buy it, specvcial ish’s are never a part of a subscription. @AllenP, great breakdown of business 101, you shouldn’t have had to do it but I guess it was needed for some. lol. I too “want” to see certain covers but I know that what’s inside is what counts. @ Luke & flash and everyone before..please go reread AllenP @4:47. hahaha. At least I don’t have to buy 2 separate mags to get both covers this time AND the pics are action shots instead of mugshots. CornBread Maxwell….. CornBread Maxwell….CornBread Max…..

co-sign the D train @ 3:33. i just can’t see why you guys would complain about SLAM doing an issue like this, regardless of whether or not you dislike kobe or lebron. dope pictures? classic articles? dated quotes that are fun to read after knowing what happens? personally, i love when slam revisits old articles. this is a must have

@John: You are kiddin’, right? No? You are from Canada, nuff said…(which one, LOL!)

  • BLKFX

@topo: ARE YOU CRAZY?!?! The ONLY things Kobe has on Dwade is a more consistent jumpshot and WAY better teammates. I think it is funny how people can only relate to people and things from the past. Why is it so hard for people to realize how good Wade really is? The dude put up 33ppg, 5.6rpg, 6.8apg on 56% shooting in round one against a great defensive team in the Celtics with absolutely no help. Make no mistake, Wade takes a backseat to no one.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@BLKFX – I LOL’d at that one. How about adding consistency and longevity to that list? Kobe’s been consistently doing his thing since ’96. ’96!!! Who else from that draft is still out there being touted as among the best? If Wade is still mentioned in some circles as being the best player in the L in 2017, then we can talk.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

The best basketball mag on the planet does it again. Can’t wait to cop.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Please tell me the article Scoop did after the Colorado incident is in here.

  • BLKFX

@ENIGMATIC: you are right about consistency and longevity. Mamba has been doing his thing for a while now. You are wrong though about him “consistently doing his thing since ’96″. Sure Kobe was drafted in ’96 but he didn’t become the Kobe we know and love til around ’99. And dont get me wrong i got a lot of respect for Kobe’s game, i just bothers me when i see such a lack of respect for Dwade. I think Kobe and LeBron fans have a hard time accepting/comprehending that a 6’4 guard could possibly be on the same level as those guys. And someone on here actually compared Wade to Penny Hardaway?? C’mon now, lets get serious..

  • RDGRFX

Seriously, you should make issues about people who actually matter right now. The Celtics are Lakers are rolling, but don’t put them on the cover, just tack LeChoke and Kobe on with some stale articles and call it a day. Yikes.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@BLKFX – You’re right, Kobe didn’t really REALLY start doing his thing till like his 3rd season, but still. Pretty impressive run. And hey, Penny Hardaway was a BEAST pre-injury. I hear you though, Wade plays like he’s 6’7″ or 6’8″, he’s one of my faves too.

  • http://slamonline.com Niyasofresh

    Awsome they both look dope!

  • Ill Will

Ryan, we all understand the basic economics of running a magazine. SLAM writers and editors have made them eminently clear over the years. But they also wax and wane openly about who deserves a cover and who doesn’t. If we didn’t hear that kind of thing you wouldn’t get comments that question the validity of Kobe/LeBron collector’s issue when only Jordan has had one in the past.

No disrespect, dude, but … you haven’t been SLAM Ed. for a LONG time now. Why is your underwear in a bunch?

Looks like SLAM needed more money.
    Cool.
Because it’s a bonus issue, it’s all good with me. The Jordan issue was a bad fiasco in my opinion, but if SLAM wants to throw out a magazine honoring Lebron and Kobe ALONG with their usual monthly copy, I don’t see the complaints.
I’ll see how much is new content and see the price (which hasn’t been mentioned) and decide whether I should cop it or not. If it’s 50/50 like Ben said, I’ll probably get it.

By the way, I recognize all the writers outside of ‘Ryan Jones’
    Who?

ENDS: The Slamadamonth side panels were lost due to some NBA cost/hassle absurdity that I won’t bore you with. Trust, we never wanted to lose them. We ultimately did not have a choice.

@Jukai: The Jordan special issue was the best-selling magazine we did last year.
@Bcgreen20: Every issue has both covers. Should be in Mexico this week if not there already.

Apparently, my idea of RON-RON and RASHEED was ignored. That’s okay. I can take a hint.

First of all, Jukai was on Jordan’s d**k when the Seed was arguing that Kobe was better than MJ.

Second: It’s OFFICIAL. JORDAN ON THE COVER OF NBA 2K11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Simply put, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James exist on a different level than the rest of the players in the NBA. Even if there are nights when other guys can play as well as them, there are never nights when anyone is a bigger star”

Oh heeey D-Wade is calling you with his 33,2 ppg series with 56% fg… and he wants to know if you are saying that these 2 are more entertaining than him on a daily basis… and he wants to know if one of these two has had a better season than his 08/09 30,2 ppg 50% fg, 7,5 assists, 5 rebs, 2,1 steals, 1,3 blocks season… If you bring up Kobe 35 ppg on 45% with ballhogging 4,5 ast to 3,1 to’s season you should be ashamed…he has had a better finals series than both two…It’s a disrespectful phrase to Mr. Wade of who is just as good and talented as these 2. May I presume you have been informed that he was the first player in league history with 2000+ pts, 500+ ast, 100+ blocks and 100+ steals in 08/09? And the first player under 6-5 with 100+ blocks in a season? Way to go Slam… way to go. May he crush LeBron in the EFC if he gets some talent to Miami except LeBron to show u fools he is the real deal. And not just a top 5-10 real deal the main man in the league real deal. I hope I made u think before you put out the mentioned statement next time, i’m out.
