SLAM Presents On Sale Now!

Kobe and LeBron: The two biggest stars. One big magazine.

slampresentskobelebronbigby Ben Osborne / @bosborne17

Oh, how I dreamed of walking into the media room at the Finals and dropping this on the table that holds the day’s clips, quotes and stats…

But hey, shit happens. The Cavs were worse than we thought, and the Celtics were a whole lot better.lebronhighschool

Those dreams were just about the ego boost that comes from timing something right, though—they don’t reflect on a product that isn’t about this month anyway: It’s about careers.

Simply put, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James exist on a different level than the rest of the players in the NBA. Even if there are nights when other guys can play as well as them, there are never nights when anyone is a bigger star. This is true on TV, in arenas, and, increasingly, around the globe.

SLAM’s publisher and I—with the backing of the rest of our staff—have been wanting to do an issue like this (flip covers, 100 pages, with each guy getting 50, and a dope pullout poster in the middle to separate them) for a good 18 months now. But it took time to gather up the stories, build up the photo archives, and get Nike on board with some ad support. We finally got all the key commitments around late March and slotted this in to drop during the Conference Finals. Well, here we are.

Again, the professional side of me wishes LeBron’s Cavs were still on a collision course with Kobe’s Lakers to play in a Finals that might have set TV ratings records for the NBA. But the fan side of me, who has obviously 72825116NB_DNA041618046read through this issue 20 times already, knows that the mag—which will be on newsstands for three months and at simbackissues.com until it sells out—is great regardless of who is playing in the Finals.

What makes it so great? Hard to know where to even begin answering that question.

We re-ran the best cover stories we’ve ever done on these guys, done by writers such as Cheo Hodari Coker, Scoop Jackson, Russ Bengtson, Ryan Jones and Lang Whitaker. We ran incredible photos, from exclusive shoots of these guys in high school through incredible action photos that we combed through Getty Images to find. We wrote new stories about them both, covering everything from their early days as players to their on-court footwear histories to their current roles as the NBA’s biggest names.

Trust me: if you like one or both of these players, and/or just want a keepsake of NBA basketball in 2010, you need this magazine. Look for it on newsstands everywhere next week.

Everyone seems to forget that Kobe has scored more points in a single game than Jordan not once twice but 7 times… Kobe had 81 againts the raptors in 08 only person to score more was of course Chamberlain… Kobe also has the most points in a Lakers uniform… not Kareem or Magic but KB…

Wade played his best ball at Marquette… Im a louisville cardinal fan and i got to see Wade on a regular basis… Im not downing him but without a stronger supposting cast he’ll never make the eastern conference championship again… but NO he doesn’t deserve to compare to The Great One KOBE!!!

Apparently my underwear responded to some comments here over the weekend without my knowledge or permission. Really sorry about that. I need to do a better job of signing off.

@ben OS since I know your reading this. Bring back the side panels on Dunk of the Month showing us what happends seconds prior to the dunk. Also Stop Putting team Names on the Posters, if these idiots dont know that Kobe Bryant plays for the Lakers they shouldnt have the Mag in the First Place.

That started with the Team USA players when everyone else didnt wanna rep thier Country y’all started putting so and so, team USA. It was clever back then but now its just whack. we know Steve nash plays in Phoenix. Bring back the catchy one liners for the Slam-ups

Looks like SLAM needed more money.
    Cool.
Because it’s a bonus issue, it’s all good with me. The Jordan issue was a bad fiasco in my opinion, but if SLAM wants to throw out a magazine honoring Lebron and Kobe ALONG with their usual monthly copy, I don’t see the complaints.
I’ll see how much is new content and see the price (which hasn’t been mentioned) and decide whether I should cop it or not. If it’s 50/50 like Ben said, I’ll probably get it.

By the way, I recognize all the writers outside of ‘Ryan Jones’
    Who?

ENDS: The Slamadamonth side panels were lost due to some NBA cost/hassle absurdity that I won’t bore you with. Trust, we never wanted to lose them. We ultimately did not have a choice.

@Jukai: The Jordan special issue was the best-selling magazine we did last year.
@Bcgreen20: Every issue has both covers. Should be in Mexico this week if not there already.

Apparently, my idea of RON-RON and RASHEED was ignored. That’s okay. I can take a hint.

  • http://aol.com Martin Fenn

First of all, Jukai was on Jordan’s d**k when the Seed was arguing that Kobe was better than MJ.

Second: It’s OFFICIAL. JORDAN ON THE COVER OF NBA 2K11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ali Saadat

If only LeBroom and his team sucked a little less Kobe woulda got the chance to beat in the finals to prove his Alpha Player status

“Simply put, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James exist on a different level than the rest of the players in the NBA. Even if there are nights when other guys can play as well as them, there are never nights when anyone is a bigger star”

Oh heeey D-Wade is calling you with his 33,2 ppg series with 56% fg… and he wants to know if you are saying that these 2 are more entertaining than him on a daily basis… and he wants to know if one of these two has had a better season than his 08/09 30,2 ppg 50% fg, 7,5 assists, 5 rebs, 2,1 steals, 1,3 blocks season… If you bring up Kobe 35 ppg on 45% with ballhogging 4,5 ast to 3,1 to’s season you should be ashamed…he has had a better finals series than both two…It’s a disrespectful phrase to Mr. Wade of who is just as good and talented as these 2. May I presume you have been informed that he was the first player in league history with 2000+ pts, 500+ ast, 100+ blocks and 100+ steals in 08/09? And the first player under 6-5 with 100+ blocks in a season? Way to go Slam… way to go. May he crush LeBron in the EFC if he gets some talent to Miami except LeBron to show u fools he is the real deal. And not just a top 5-10 real deal the main man in the league real deal. I hope I made u think before you put out the mentioned statement next time, i’m out.
