SLAM Presents On Sale Now!

Kobe and LeBron: The two biggest stars. One big magazine.

slampresentskobelebronbigby Ben Osborne / @bosborne17

Oh, how I dreamed of walking into the media room at the Finals and dropping this on the table that holds the day’s clips, quotes and stats…

But hey, shit happens. The Cavs were worse than we thought, and the Celtics were a whole lot better.lebronhighschool

Those dreams were just about the ego boost that comes from timing something right, though—they don’t reflect on a product that isn’t about this month anyway: It’s about careers.

Simply put, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James exist on a different level than the rest of the players in the NBA. Even if there are nights when other guys can play as well as them, there are never nights when anyone is a bigger star. This is true on TV, in arenas, and, increasingly, around the globe.

SLAM’s publisher and I—with the backing of the rest of our staff—have been wanting to do an issue like this (flip covers, 100 pages, with each guy getting 50, and a dope pullout poster in the middle to separate them) for a good 18 months now. But it took time to gather up the stories, build up the photo archives, and get Nike on board with some ad support. We finally got all the key commitments around late March and slotted this in to drop during the Conference Finals. Well, here we are.

Again, the professional side of me wishes LeBron’s Cavs were still on a collision course with Kobe’s Lakers to play in a Finals that might have set TV ratings records for the NBA. But the fan side of me, who has obviously 72825116NB_DNA041618046read through this issue 20 times already, knows that the mag—which will be on newsstands for three months and at simbackissues.com until it sells out—is great regardless of who is playing in the Finals.

What makes it so great? Hard to know where to even begin answering that question.

We re-ran the best cover stories we’ve ever done on these guys, done by writers such as Cheo Hodari Coker, Scoop Jackson, Russ Bengtson, Ryan Jones and Lang Whitaker. We ran incredible photos, from exclusive shoots of these guys in high school through incredible action photos that we combed through Getty Images to find. We wrote new stories about them both, covering everything from their early days as players to their on-court footwear histories to their current roles as the NBA’s biggest names.

Trust me: if you like one or both of these players, and/or just want a keepsake of NBA basketball in 2010, you need this magazine. Look for it on newsstands everywhere next week.

Nice one anton. Wade is five times the defnder bean or bron have ever been or ever will be. Wade has givin his all for a 500 team. His effort can never be questioned. Cant say that about bronnie and mr bean. Both of whom have had their heart questioned in the playoffs, and for good cause. That was the last time wade will go out in the first round until hes 36

I hate Facebook, but I’ll cop the mag.

  • kh

    dope.

  • Robb

    Lebron James? Who’s that?

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Fun comments (I think I liked Allenp’s the most). @Hoodsnake we’ll be previewing Nike’s next kicks in a different issue…
I’ll mostly stick with what I said before: Pick it up at a store, look at it, and decide if you want to buy it. If you like SLAM, you will like this. I promise.
Also, I would like to do more of these on other players, too. We just need to know that they’d sell enough to cover our costs and that we have time to do them on top of all our regular issues. AI, KG, Wade…all possibilities. Let’s see how this one does.
    Thanks for the support.

  • I am the Walrus

Does anyone know how to get the free digital issue of Slam that comes with the magazine subscription? I have been subscribed over here in Australia for ages and I still haven’t got the new Jordan cover, so I would appreciate if some one could help me out…

  • Madex

Why don’t you guys do a rookie cover every year??..i think u guys did like 2 covers of it right…?..i think 1 of the cover had kobe, nash ,ray allen and others…and that issue came with a poster of the cover…….i thought it was pretty damn cool and i wish u guys did a rookie cover like that every year

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

  • flash

kobe i understand. lebron? i dunno.

  • BostonBaller

To answer Tommy jones..YES, go buy it, specvcial ish’s are never a part of a subscription. @AllenP, great breakdown of business 101, you shouldn’t have had to do it but I guess it was needed for some. lol. I too “want” to see certain covers but I know that what’s inside is what counts. @ Luke & flash and everyone before..please go reread AllenP @4:47. hahaha. At least I don’t have to buy 2 separate mags to get both covers this time AND the pics are action shots instead of mugshots. CornBread Maxwell….. CornBread Maxwell….CornBread Max…..

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

co-sign the D train @ 3:33. i just can’t see why you guys would complain about SLAM doing an issue like this, regardless of whether or not you dislike kobe or lebron. dope pictures? classic articles? dated quotes that are fun to read after knowing what happens? personally, i love when slam revisits old articles. this is a must have

  • John

Will this be available in Canada?
    If so which one?

  • ai come back

i think slams approach is basketball first and then business is like a quarter step behind

  • Jojo

Does anyone know which issues have Ray Allen poster in there magazine. Thanks

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

@John: You are kiddin’, right? No? You are from Canada, nuff said…(which one, LOL!)

  • BLKFX

@topo: ARE YOU CRAZY?!?! The ONLY things Kobe has on Dwade is a more consistent jumpshot and WAY better teammates. I think it is funny how people can only relate to people and things from the past. Why is it so hard for people to realize how good Wade really is? The dude put up 33ppg, 5.6rpg, 6.8apg on 56% shooting in round one against a great defensive team in the Celtics with absolutely no help. Make no mistake, Wade takes a backseat to no one.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@BLKFX – I LOL’d at that one. How about adding consistency and longevity to that list? Kobe’s been consistently doing his thing since ’96. ’96!!! Who else from that draft is still out there being touted as among the best? If Wade is still mentioned in some circles as being the best player in the L in 2017, then we can talk.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

The best basketball mag on the planet does it again. Can’t wait to cop.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Please tell me the article Scoop did after the Colorado incident is in here.

  • BLKFX

@ENIGMATIC: you are right about consistency and longevity. Mamba has been doing his thing for a while now. You are wrong though about him “consistently doing his thing since ’96″. Sure Kobe was drafted in ’96 but he didn’t become the Kobe we know and love til around ’99. And dont get me wrong i got a lot of respect for Kobe’s game, i just bothers me when i see such a lack of respect for Dwade. I think Kobe and LeBron fans have a hard time accepting/comprehending that a 6’4 guard could possibly be on the same level as those guys. And someone on here actually compared Wade to Penny Hardaway?? C’mon now, lets get serious..

  • RDGRFX

Seriously, you should make issues about people who actually matter right now. The Celtics are Lakers are rolling, but don’t put them on the cover, just tack LeChoke and Kobe on with some stale articles and call it a day. Yikes.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@BLKFX – You’re right, Kobe didn’t really REALLY start doing his thing till like his 3rd season, but still. Pretty impressive run. And hey, Penny Hardaway was a BEAST pre-injury. I hear you though, Wade plays like he’s 6’7″ or 6’8″, he’s one of my faves too.

  • http://slamonline.com Niyasofresh

    Awsome they both look dope!

  • Ill Will

Ryan, we all understand the basic economics of running a magazine. SLAM writers and editors have made them eminently clear over the years. But they also wax and wane openly about who deserves a cover and who doesn’t. If we didn’t hear that kind of thing you wouldn’t get comments that question the validity of Kobe/LeBron collector’s issue when only Jordan has had one in the past.

No disrespect, dude, but … you haven’t been SLAM Ed. for a LONG time now. Why is your underwear in a bunch?

  • John

    @Bigi

Guess Canada does get it Bigi

Heres what i got in my inbox:

    Hey John,

It’s a double issue, and, yes, it will be available in Canada.

  • http://slamonline.com Adam Fleischer

Love Atiba’s photo of Bron that’s running in this post. Were him and Kobe rocking the half fro at the same time?

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    Gaaaaah!! *starts scratching out eyeballs*

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

    Dear Ill Will:
The comments make clear that many readers in fact do not understand the basic economics of running a magazine. Also, you clearly do not understand the meaning of the phrase “wax and wane.” Maybe you were thinking of “wax off,” from Karate Kid.
    Sincerely,
Ryan’s bunched underwear (we had him type this for us)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Ryan, that was mean.

  • savage

All Barnes & Noble and Borders stores should have this issue, but not until this upcoming week.

Kobe was an all-star in his rookie year! The youngest rookie to ever start at the age of 18! Don’t forget that guys!!!

  • truthteller

I’m sorry, Kobe was the youngest player period to start iin an NBA all-star game at 17!

  • Logues

truthteller: maybe the rookie-soph game, but he was not an all-star his rook yr. he avg like 7 ppg his rookie yr.
Ben: Please do the KG one!!

  • Logues

O, and SLAM should start making their own NBA dvds about players careers. That would be dope!

  • http://www.motherjones.com AndTheJellosJigglin

@Jackie. Wake up-the price of gasoline was already artificially low before the spill and has barely gone up since. Maybe the oil companies wont post record profits this year? Um yea that’s as likely as teachers making more than the best athletes in the world…

  • Ill Will

Ryan, I did misuse the phrase “wax and wane,” and that was an asinine mistake. But my point stands.

  • http://hoopistani.blogspot.com Hoopistani

    Wade is better

  • Nas

@Ryan; as a social media consultant to many top brands, the way you are answering criticism is really appaling — everyone has a right to their own opinion; state the facts if you want to correct something and let it go

  • Nas

@ryan Of course it is all about sales – I agree; we will get a cover of the NBA champs (Bryant & Gasol) next month followed by a cover of Lebron wearing a KNICKS jersey or some the following month speculating his move — follow the $$$$$ man, follow the $$$$
