What’s your favorite KICK(S)?

SLAM Presents KICKS Logo

by Matt Lawyue / @mlawyue

As SLAM approaches its 13th issue of KICKS, there are 12 previous issues to contemplate, celebrate and fawn over. Beginning in September 1998, KICKS has become a staple of the SLAM identity. It’s never been enough for SLAM to bring you just the game on the court. Continuously and without fail, SLAM goes behind the scenes to plate every detail you’d ever want to know about the people who compete in the greatest game on this planet. And perhaps no aspect of basketball has transcended the sport than kicks.

Sneakers, shoes, high-tops, low-tops, retros, AF1, Air Jordan, AND 1s, Chuck Taylor, Puma, adidas, Converse Weapons, Reebok and so on and so forth. It’s the sole reason why KICKS is produced every single year, to fulfill the shoe obsession that has taken over basketball and culture, from America to Japan, from the ’50′s to the present. As Russ said in KICKS 2,

“Bottom line: if sneakers are cool, a whole magazine dedicated to them must be off the meter. We think it is. And if you come across a pair of purple-yellow-and-white Worthy’s in a 9.5, don’t hesitate to give me a call.”

Issue – Year – Cover Athlete – Team – Shoe Brand

1 – 1998 – Kevin Garnett – Minnesota – Nike

2 – 1999 – Allen Iverson – Philadelphia – Reebok

3 – 2000 – Kobe Bryant – Los Angeles (Lakers) – adidas

4 – 2001 – Kobe Bryant – Los Angeles (Lakers) – adidas

5 – 2002 – Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson – Los Angeles (Clippers) – Jordan Brand

6 – 2003 – Tim Duncan, Tracy McGrady and Kevin Garnett – San Antonio, Minnesota, Orlando – adidas

7 – 2004 – Carmelo Anthony – Denver – Jordan Brand

8 – 2005 – Dwyane Wade, Tracy McGrady and Allen Iverson – Miami, Houston, Philadelphia – Converse, adidas, Reebok

9 – 2006 – Kevin Garnett, Chauncey Billups, Tracy McGrady, Gilbert Arenas and Tim Duncan – Minnesota, Detroit, Houton, Washington, San Antonio – adidas

10 – 2007 – Michael Jordan – (Chicago) – Nike, Jordan Brand

11 – 2008 – LeBron James – (Cleveland) – Nike

12 – 2009 – Derrick Rose – Chicago – adidas

13 – 2010 – ______ – ______ – ______

I’ll leave you to ponder two things:

-Guess the cover athlete, team and shoe brand for our upcoming 13th ish. (You’ll find out the answer soon enough.)

-If you had to wear one pair of sneakers for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I can see K.Durant gracing this month’s cover, dude’s got next in the shoe game.

As far as sneaks to rock for the rest of my existence? To ball would be the Kobe IV, but just to own one pair forever I’d go Space Jams all day and never look back..

Great stuff, Matt. Lot of hard work went into these magazines. @lexluther: KD would have been in the running for this cover but we put him on our World Hoops issue (http://www.slamonline.com/online/the-magazine/toc/2010/07/slam-presents-team-usa-on-sale/) and can’t have him on two things at the same time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

It’s probably going to be Lebron or Wade. Team will be Heat, and the brand will be Jordan or Nike. It’s practically going to be a Heat issue. LOL
As for the shoes, I love rockin my Jordan XI black/reds.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

@Ben. That’s what I was thinking. I was going to say KD but figured he was JUST on the World Hoops Issue so couldn’t be him.

  • Richie

Baron Davis and his big as Li-Ning Beard Mans LOL

  • Valentin Faure from France

Humm .. let me think …
That would be great if Brandon Jennings get the 13th Kicks’ issue !
Because, firstly he’s a rising star in the League and helped the Bucks to reach back the Playoffs last season, and furthermore Under Armour is a new brand in Basketball, and need certainly advestisement to grow up in Basketball, and perhaps to compete with Nike or Adidas on the basketball market !
So I go with Brandon Jennings and Under Armour !
    Peace .

  • Martin

    John wall and reebok

  • Migs

I’m with niQ – it’ll be Wade and LeBron – two of the biggest free agents to come out this year, repping two of the biggest signature lines (Jordan Brand and Nike’s LeBron line).

As for shoes to wear for the rest of my life, that’s a tough one.. but I think I’d go with Jordan III’s. Looks great on and off court, with jeans, pants, shorts, whatever.. but it performs well enough on court too. For pure performance though, I love my Ultraflights.

Main thing I think about with KICKS was when I’d bring it to school and everyone would wanna read it – guys, girls, anyone, everyone.. Like, at the end of the day I’d take it home and it was tattered up big time.

This cover? Going with John Wall.

Shoes for life? Easy. Low white/chrome Jordan 8′s in size 12 thanks.

Look ive been bying SLAM for over 12 years now, it was nothing like the 90′s for ya’ll. The first magazine i saw was the first KICKS mag. It was unreal to me that every basketball shoe was in there up untill 98. Man ya’ll had the J’s in there that didnt even come out till 99. Man i bought every slamm magazine after that. The covers to the magazines were off the the hook, man to see who’s on the cover every month still excites me, maybe more than whats in side the magazine. No offence the slam but after the 90′s nike fell off to the me with a few excetions, lets keep it real. Ever body now aday’s is just buying these ugly shoes just because, and the suppliers are just dont care, there making money of these groupies. All the good shoes are retros and hybrids of retros, and of course the Lebron’s. Man i could be wrong about these comments, but I love shoes more than 95% of people, sounds crazy but its true. The shape of the the look of the from looking down the in side of the shoe all matters. Time for me to calm down lol!! Man ill never stop buying SLAM, unless GOD tell’s me 2. My dream is to make it to HEAVEN and have a comment published in an SLAM mag. GOD BLESS ya’ll im out the FATHER, SON, and the HOLY GHOST. Dr Theresa Ann Garrison, Church of the Rapture.

  • gregor

    Kobe – L.A – Nike

Also, it would have to be the Air Force One. I thought about the Jordan XI, but the AF1 can be worn in a few more situations. I couldn’t bring myself to wear a pair of XIs somewhere where they could get scuffed or ruin the sole.

  • ab_40

2002 and 2003 were the dopest. Y’all should do multiple player covers as much as possible that makes it a lot doper.

  • hoodsnake

WHATS UP DOG??? – KG’s the original and best and Nike biased. Not to mention the only KICKS I ever owned… DRose will be on the 13th cover

  • Nate

reebok questions for the rest of my life, and I think they’d save wade and bron for the next slam, not the kicks issue

  • kundai

yo its gotta be either the miami heat. or Tyreke”havoc” Evans

  • http://www.wamit1man@hotmail.com kenneth patton

my man gregor is right u got to have AF1 on the cover u can get all colors or just rock all white.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne
