SLAM Presents Jordan, 2010

Bigger, Gold and On Sale Now!

by Ben Osborne / @bosborne17

This may be the simplest thing I’ve ever written on here: Give the people what they want.jordan

In the summer of 2009, in honor of Michael Jordan’s induction into the Hall of Famewe put out our first 100% Jordan issue in more than a decade (the first one doesn’t really exist online, though I’ve tacked in a sort of faded jpeg at right; the ’09 one, which you should remember, was featured on this site and many other places, too.). To put it simply, the issue was a runaway success. Sold out of a bunch of stores, sold more copies than anything else we did in 2009, got love via snail mail, email and all over the internet. All of us here at SLAM were proud of the product, and proud of how well it was received.

The truth is, the sales figures alone might have been enough for the financial powers that be who run SLAM to put another MJ issue out. And I wouldn’t have had a say in the matter. But then the craziest thing happened. Or rather: what would have been the craziest thing for any athlete other than Michael Jordan happened. He went out and stayed arguably the biggest name in basketball.

In 2010 alone, Mike has: become majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, gone into the Hall of Fame as a member of the Dream Team, served as presenter for ex-teammate Scottie Pippen’s own entry into the Hall, and, most significantly from a pop-culture perspective, been put on the cover of NBA 2K11, an insane honor for a guy who hasn’t played in more than five years. With the recent announcement from EA Sports that release of their own ballyhooed game, NBA Elite, is on hold, Mike is going to have the video-game consumer on lock for at least the next month.

All this to say, why shouldn’t we put out another issue. So here’s the deal: you’ve got all the same feature stories that ran in our ’09 version, plus a new table of contents, a new Editor’s Letter, and 16 new pages of Mike, including stories on him as an owner and as a star for Team USA (which he’d been long before anyone uttered the phrase “Dream Team.”)

Plus, a sick twist on last year’s cover: shiny gold.

You know what to do…

Oh yeah, and Wilt has 78 career triple doubles, behind only Magic, Jason Kidd, and the Big O. That’s 19 more than Larry Bird, the next highest on the list. Wow.
By the way, LeBron has 34 career triple-doubles in 7 seasons which is flat out scary, while Jordan has 28 for his career.
    Sup Phil.

  • hangtime Hec

If there was anybody that could fool you into thinking that they could fly, it would be Michael Jordan.

  • hammer

@blackphantom. I beg 2 differ. Pip is the gdpoat. He did everything russell couldnt do. @sam. Mj is an icon. A legend. Haven’t u heard? Mj has been brought 2 the 21st century 4 the same reasons artists like elvis, beatles, tupac and biggie. Legends never die!

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

@Teddy: go read Bill Simmons’ book. Seriously. Especially the first few chapters. Go.

  • JTaylor21

Damn when did Magic/Kareem/Hakeem/Big O all die? I must have been on mars with no oxygen tank cuz I missed that sh*t. Those guys are just as relevant as MJ is today especially among TRUE NBA fans that’s why we are talking about them but to the media it’s like MJ’s the only legend alive because they had a hand in making MJ so popular and are why so many IDIOTS continue to claim he’s the GOAT, FU*K OUTTA HERE being famous and popular doesn’t count when discussing greatness.

  • Heals

If you missed out on last years then you’re stoked, but if you coped last years then it’s a little disappointing, but business is business, keep em’ comin…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Michael: Looks like a very interesting read but isn’t Bill Simmons just about the hugest Celtics fan that ever lived? So he doesn’t really have THAT much credibility in the Russell vs. Chamberlain debate. I heard he bashes Chamberlain throughout the book… I definitely want to read it though.

  • Slick Ric

Jtaylor tweaking. there is a g.o.a.t: Michael Jordan

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

@Teddy: Yeah he puts Russell ahead of Chamberlain (which isn’t necessarily wrong either) but I found myself agreeing – well, mostly – with what he was getting at re Wilt. It is an interesting read, even if it means taking on a view contrary to your own.

  • The Man From F.R.I.S.C.O.

$7.99 for a new Table of Contents & a new Editor’s Letter too? As well as 16…..yes,16 extra pages?

    All RIGHT!!!

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

For the record, I have MJ at #1 with Russell, Magic, Kareem, Wilt, Birdman, Dream, Kobe, Duncan, Big O, West, and Shaq following him – in some kind of order.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’m going to say Kareem and Dream both > Shaq. Thoughts?
And what is Chris Andersen doing in your top 10, Mike!? ;)

  • clahan93

    1-jordan
    2-magic
    3-abdul jabbar
    4-bird
    5-big o
    6-chamberlain
    7-russel
    8-olajuwon
    9-west
    10-dunkan or shaq

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

If I was drafting a team from all the past legends, I’d probably pick wilt and kareem before jordan. however, that’s not to say that jordan wasn’t better than both of them (he was). it’s like the NBA about 2 years ago, you’d start a team with lebron even though Kobe was better.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I can’t co-sign Wilt being the GOAT. Dude was a beast and he always got his individually, but that didn’t always translate into team success. You gotta win more than two championships before I’ll declare you the GOAT. Magic, Kareem, all them cats are all-time greats, but what makes MJ the GOAT is he had the most KILLER of killer instincts. Drop him into any era and he will be out for blood…

  • Michael

    GOAT = MJ.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ E: 2 championships = not translating to team success? I’d understand the argument if he hadn’t won a SINGLE championship. But the fact is, winning 1 ring is an incredible feat by itself and requires a great TEAM, period. He won two, which proves one of them was not a fluke. He is the greatest player of all time. He didn’t just get his individually, he completely exploded the stat sheet; numbers-wise he was head-and-shoulders above any other player to ever play this game aside from maybe Big O Robertson.

  • Mollywood

‘a new table of content, plus a new editor’s letter’…

    wow.

you’re doing a great job ben, and i’m sure there are higher powers out there that decide to dish out a recycled version of last year’s mj issue – but c’mon, if you gotta use reasons like ‘a new table of content, plus a new editor’s letter’ to get your readers’ enthusiasm for a new issue, it’s come a long way. i’m not reading slam for tables of content and editor’s letters, but for it’s cutting-edge and up-to-date features.

i think this ‘mj 100% 1,5′ publication is a pretty pathetic way to get that extra money out of slam-fan’s pockets, in the same way that putting together ‘alien’ and ‘predator’ in the same movie is a lame way of movie studios to cash in.

‘hey, that worked last time; let’s squeeze that out until the last drop.’

with all due respect to mj, but slam 139 and the previous mj issue had enough on the g.o.a.t.

    don’t push it.

  • Lan

I’d buy an issue just about his shoes! But I’ll skip this Love MJ issue.

  • JoeMaMa

Cosign Teddy. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: you can only compare players to their peers. Anything else is “what ifs” and “would’ve beens”. Wilt, when compared to his era…is beyond comparison. Wilt is the most dominant ever. MJ’s likely the best ever. Russell, on account of his rings, is the greatest (greatness being defined by winning). Magic may be the most skilled ever.
Last thing: I don’t know how another MJ mag can be justified. Him buying a team is HUGE, but it doesn’t mean SLAM should reprint articles, throw in some photos, add the ownership article, and expect people to buy it. This mag is for star crossed teens and rabid MJ fans. It reminds me of a Simpsons episode when Bart proudly displayed his Krusty Brand home pregnancy test. There are limits….

  • http://Myspace Shanoooooo

I still can’t understand how subscribers can’t get at least one Slam Presents Mag a year ? Thats why I don’t buy Kicks any more nor did I get the Olympic and Worlds issues. I did get the Kobe/Lebron issue but that was different. As is this one, so I will be getting it but hopefully with a five finger discount cause like I said, Im through paying for Slam Presents.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

  • tato

Umm, maybe i will buy this special, i have the jordan special 2009, but wait a minute, why don´t sale a special kicks re-issue (first kicks magazine)?……

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

1st. Magic said “Michael is the greatest player ever”
2nd… Jordan is the GOAT. so leave it alone.

Show me a player that got physically abused cuz he was so good. Jordan rules…

Show me a player that was a relentless scoring leader, and defensive pest and won a title in the same year.

Show me a player related to ball that has a similiar quote as “So and So is “the Jordan of” ______”

Get the hell out of here, he aint no GOAT my a$$… the list can continue

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

This issue will not go to subscribers. It should be sold everywhere that regular SLAM is sold, both in the US or overseas. If you don’t live near a place that sells SLAM, you can order it from our backissues department: http://www.primediabackissues.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=PB&Category_Code=SLAM
(It’s not on there right this second but should be by on there later today). Thanks

  • chris6

nice work slam!once again!but i really loved another issue.the ’88 issue with the three covers!and the way you wrote the articles like it was ’88 and magic just nailed his last ‘chip, was awesome!what about something similar huh???maybe a bird/magic issue or something like that????

  • JTaylor21

I bet you sawed that hand off and put it in the freezer like The Iceman; Richard Kuklinski.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ
  • Shawn K

As of right now its not on sale where my normal slm sells here in CA

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

Who’s arguing with JTaylor about the GOAT status? He already stated that he wasn’t alive for any of it. His word’s, not mine. What’s my place in arguing the events of the Great Depression? World War 1?

  • ENDS

    SLAM
When Kobe wins his sixth ring. I want an MJ/Kobe magazine dedicated to them both. I feel it was an injustice to have 5 time champion Kobe share a magazine with 0 time champion Lebron. With the MAG, have questions for them both to answer about each others game and let other NBA players past and now debate who would win with the same team and one on one. This would be your best selling magazine ever. After this season is over, then do the magazine interviewing siblings, past teammates of MJ, getting what he was really like and past and current teammates of Kobe, to get more insight on them both, not just recycled articles. BOOK IT!!!

  • http://sdfklflc.com Jukai

Seed: everyone would say Jordan. Boring issue.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    JUKAI
I know people would say MJ, but some will go with Kobe, which would add fuel to the Magazine. Also you and I would love to hear would MJ really thinks of Kobe and vice versa, based off of predetermined questions, they cannot skip around. Maybe it add fuel to Kobe to go after seven or eight rings or maybe it makes MJ look that much better, but it would be a DOPE issue. Also Slam, better do it before some other basketball magazines print the cash cow, because the MJ issues are nice, BUT HE IS NOT PLAYING RIGHT NOW. Also KOBE has the highest selling jersey WORLDWIDE, so talking about the GOAT and the new ALL TIME GREAT would be awesome and compare him to someone everyone see’ as the closet thing to him ever, which in the end starts more debates and gives us insight into MJ mindset in a different light, because MJ has made statements that he feels Kobe is the best player in the NBA now and I have never seen and MJ/KOBE magazine ever. BOOK IT!!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Uncle05Sam Earl

Now I can put both sides of the poster up!!

  • Ryan Smith

you guys are killing me with this goat crap. mj aint even in the top 3 on my list. it took him way to long to win a title and thats got to factor in the equation. he didnt win until the 90′s when the NBA was at its worst and the refs never called a foul on him cause they had to keep him on the floor so people wouldnt leave. just cause mj was a marketing machine doesnt mean he is the greatest. he was the greatest athlete but not the greatest player and anyone who knows the game knows the difference!

  • Javy

I am a Laker fan and I don’t consider Kobe at the same level as Jordan.
MJ is that good that he even gained a lot of Laker fans through out his career.
    He was that good!
