Report: Ricky Rubio To Sign With Adidas (UPDATE)

UPDATE (June 1): Jon Wexler, Global Director of Entertainment and Influencer Marketing at adidas tweeted the following today, which looks like the official word of Rubio’s arrival in the adidas camp.

May 11: By now you now sneakers are big business, and with a few big names available on the kicks free agent market this summer, the first domino has fallen, as reports out of Spain say Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio has signed with adidas. TUBASKET.com has the full story, which (translated here by SBNation), suggests Rubio stands to make more than any other adidas-signed NBAer outside of Dwight Howard and Derrick Rose: “21-year-old Spanish star Ricky Rubio has agreed on a sponsorship deal with Adidas. Although the duration of the contract and the figures have yet to be released, it is a fact that Adidas gives a dramatic effect to its arch rival in the market, Nike, which counted Ricky Rubio among its players until last year.” When contacted by SLAMonline, adidas declined to comment.

    too easy…

  • Ben Ireland

Dwight, Rubio and Rose are all injured at the minute… All Adidas sponsors… I know Rubio wasn’t before now but still, I wouldn’t risk it, I’d stick with Nike. I know in my expereience, Adidas shoes have hurt my feet, given blister problems I’ve never had since I switched to Nike… Granted, it’s only my own personal preference, but don’t do it Rubio !

  • Andy

Say goodbye to your ankles, Ricky

  • LA Huey

    Good signing for Adidas

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

    Awesome signing by adi.

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

at least he’ll get some shine with adidas. Nike only promotes 2 players. great signing by them. he could be a top 5 PG in a few years.

  • RunNGun

Good signing by adidas. I’m a NIKE loyalist and would have preferred him to stay but I hear it’s a $250 million deal for 14 years. Who wouldn’t sign that? Also, hmmm, where are all the people now who said “playing in SMALL, COLD market like MINNY and with the TIMBERWOLVES means you have zero value and that you’ll never get any major endorsements and will never reach your marketing income potential?”

  • T-Money

thats a good move for him, especially in the euro market.

  • MUBWAR

i actually didn’t think you can get that kind money in Minny either gun

  • http://www.slamonline.com Red

What other FAs are their for shoes?

  • Bt

@gun I think rubios international appeal makes him the exception rather than the norm

  • J Roc

Even KG/Marbury got their endorsements in MN. People act like they play in Wyoming and can’t get any big deals.

Also, he tore his ACL playing in Nikes. It can happen no matter what shoe you wear. Now, wearing Fila on the court…..

  • RunNGun

@BT D-Rose has appeal in the States, especially up in the Midwest. His shoes sell like hot cakes in Chicago. Rubio, on the other hand, will not only sell shoes in the USA but he’s from Barca and Spain and has a whole country and international community (unlike Rose or D12) behind him that his sales should exceed those of Rose. Smart move by adidas.

@JROC Exactly. The media is behind that (ESPN and all the big-market sports writers) bulls#!t. KG had his deal with adidas all the way until he was traded to Boston and decided to jumpship over to Anta. K-LOVE has his endorsements with PEAK and now 361. People can diss PEAK and 361 as “weak” Chinese brands but if they look under their Nike and adidas shoes, it says MADE IN CHINA. This proves that players on mid and small market teams can get the endorsements too. And by the way, MINNY isn’t a small-market team, they’re a mid-market team; 14th based on Nielsen. If you want small market, try Memphis, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, OKC, and NOLA.

  • da real

damn, i guess all i need is a potentially career ending injury and Adi will sign me to a big time deal, haha

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Ben ireland works for Nike and he’s trolling.

  • Fresh Boirdee

Good move for adi, they need more young flashy players… Oh trust Minny will get more exposure, the NBA gonna push there new white hope in Love, Rubio has white/spanish appeal; THe League wants him to be the next Steve Nash/Pistol Pete soooooo bad. This was a real smart move by adidas. I have a feeling they are gonna sign another potential superstar either by the Olympics or the beginning of the season.

  • P

@RunNGun I really doubt his sales will exceed Rose. Yes he has international appeal but Rose is huge internationally as well. Rose is huge out in China and is one of the reasons, among others, Adidas not only posted strong figures last year but greatly surpassed their own predictions. Rubio does bring the Spainish crowd and has traction in the European market but when it comes to basketball it’s nowhere near as big as the US market. I think you underestimate Rose’s presence on a international level. Im from England and round here people know Rose, nobody but ballers know Rubio

  • Nolan

@GotHandles? nike promotes more than 2 playrs. If you mean players with a signature deal then its 3 (kobe, lebron, kd), but if you mean promote as in use them in their advertisments for other shoes than its about 6 or 7 (kd lebron, and kobe with signatures, and amare with the sweep thrus, blake with the hyperdunks, and iggy and rondo with the hypetrfuses). I also think monte ellis will be the next to be signed, my guess is to jordan.

  • MAS

I’ve Seen a brand similar to Adidas…It’s a bootleg version called Adidos with two strips…Anyone ever seen that? It’s awesome and funny.

I’ve worn Nike’s my whole life and my left ankle is as good as Kwame’s hands..

  • bike

I hope he gets his own line someday…call ‘em Slick Ricks and the tag will be ‘your feet will float like a turd in a storm drain’.

  • DruNyce

The new Adidas company line. “Can’t beat ‘em. Outbid ‘em.”

  • Corky

Nike, Adidas. Adidas, Nike. Who cares?

All of those shoes come out of the same sub contracting factory made with the exact same materials.

You may prefer one aesthetic style over the other or you may find one particular shape fits your individual foot better but as to the manufacturing quality…it’s all the same.

  • robb

he prefers money over health?? (smh)

  • http://www.sportsgrid.com/media/shaq-kobe-highlights/ shutup

The last Adidas I wore were those Kobe feet you wear, probably the worst shoe I ever played ball in, besides the Jordan XV those made my feet hurt so bad after like one pickup game, I couldnt play for the rest of the day.

  • irondan21

Anybody else notice like all adidas major nba athletes have or have had knee injuries? KG, Duncan, Rose, Billups, T-mac, Agent Zero, and now Rubio.

  • don the GSW fan

and i think irondan is forgetting that KOBE has had major issues on his feet, twisted his ankles in the kobe7 multiple times in this playoffs alone. lol. and don’t get me started on carter’s knees, broy, oden, and penny… lol. some people just plain blinded by the crowd. go follow your herd now.. tsk tsk

    Ricky Rubio. Fasty Fast!

  • ENDS

@Don GSW smart man. A Lot of people here are like middle shcoolers “if you don’t wear nikes or Jordan’s you’re not cool.” @shutup the AJ15 were some of the ugliest jay’s out (and guys there were a few uggos out there) but these young cats are brainwashed into thinking that its jordans or bust. Adidas has put out some nice shoes as well as some duds. Reebok as well, and to a lesser extent Fila is on the list. Just cause you wear a jumpman logo doesn’t make you cool and everybody else less. It just means you will pay the man 300 dollars when a better materialed shoe 12 years earlier cost less than half that. Mike aint making no more money off of me. (unless its the concords…different story…dont judge me)

  • Dre

Shutup… I find it funny that you said that about the Adidas Feet You Wear. You are the only one I have ever heard say they were bad. They were theh best basketball shoes I have worn to this day and as an ex-basketball player, college, overseas and now I’m a coach, so I have worn quite a few. Everything ain’t for everbody I guess.

  • cooldude8

well, there are some good things about the nike equipement but i have too say when it comes too basketball shoes adidas are the number1
