May 11: By now you now sneakers are big business, and with a few big names available on the kicks free agent market this summer, the first domino has fallen, as reports out of Spain say Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio has signed with adidas. TUBASKET.com has the full story, which (translated here by SBNation), suggests Rubio stands to make more than any other adidas-signed NBAer outside of Dwight Howard and Derrick Rose: “21-year-old Spanish star Ricky Rubio has agreed on a sponsorship deal with Adidas. Although the duration of the contract and the figures have yet to be released, it is a fact that Adidas gives a dramatic effect to its arch rival in the market, Nike, which counted Ricky Rubio among its players until last year.” When contacted by SLAMonline, adidas declined to comment.
