Nike Unveils Kobe VIII System (KICKS)

The first official shots of the Black Mamba’s eighth signature shoe.

The Swoosh finally unveiled—officially—the Nike Zoom Kobe VIII ‘System’ yesterday in Los Angeles, with Kobe Bryant himself in the building to break down the key aspects of his eighth signature shoe. We’ll have complete coverage from the launch event coming soon to SLAMonline, but for now, here are the basics, to go along with the first official images from Nike, which you can see above.

Some key details from Nike’s press release on the Kobe 8:

Speed. Precision. Vision. Versatility. Each of these traits is powerful on its own. When you bring them together, they’re unstoppable.

Nike Basketball factored in every dimension of Kobe Bryant’s formidable game in creating the KOBE 8 SYSTEM, which brings together performance innovations to create Kobe’s lowest and lightest performance basketball shoe to date at 9.6 ounces in a U.S. men’s size 9. The shoe’s provocative graphic snakeskin print was inspired by Kobe’s on-court alter ego the Black Mamba, with further inspiration from the Chinese Year of the Snake in 2013.

The KOBE 8 SYSTEM is the result of a close collaboration between Nike Performance Footwear Creative Director Eric Avar, his team and Kobe himself. For his latest creation, Kobe wanted a shoe that acted as an extension of his foot, mirroring his quick performance while staying lower to the ground.

Beginning December 20, 2012, the black/sulfur color of the KOBE 8 SYSTEM will be available in stores globally, on nike.com and through NIKEiD. The python-inspired color launches in Greater China on January 12, 2013, and in North America on February 2, 2013.

Beginning December 4, consumers can design, save and share their KOBE 8 SYSTEM shoes at NIKEiD.com. Beginning December 20, consumers can purchase their designs at NIKEiD.com on their desktop PCs, through mobile devices, and within select Nike stores.

KOBE SHOULD HAVE GONE THE “JORDAN” DIRECTION AND CREATED A LINE OF FRESH AND COMFORTABLE KICKS…..
    -
INSTEAD HE CHOSE TO GO ON THE “LIGHTWEIGHT” ROUTE AND ALL OF HIS KICKS NOW LOOK LIKE RUNNING SHOES.

  • GotHandles?

every kobe shoe looks the same

  • RayJr

Have you ever worn or played ball in a pair? They have been one of the comfortable shoes in the market for a while.

  • kunta kinte

@b0b42ebbe0175069c7aed9724de40fdc:disqus @zogs19994:disqus very true, these looks like nike free with different mesh and outsole and they call em innovation and new smh.they say kobes are all about performance the kobe7 dissapoint for a 200 dollar shoes.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he obviously hasn’t. the Kobe VI’s are a top 5 basketball shoe of all-time.
    .
and the whole “low tops are dangerous” is a complete and utter sham filled with bullsh*t that people just latched onto out of ignorance.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

these look really really good. TO PLAY BASKETBALL IN.

  • http://tddaily.com/ Abe Schwadron

Has the feel/look of an indoor soccer shoe. Way softer exterior than the VIIs.

  • http://twitter.com/Bigimon Marco Heino

You would wan’t to mention NIke+ aspect also…

  • LakeShow

    I can dig.

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

These and the KD V are both must buys.

  • i AN LEGEND

Yessir. I still wear my VIs.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    me 2 man

  • Drig’r

I like the minimalistic design and I like that it’s lightweight…………but I was still hoping for a bolder design / colourway to start things off……..

Will wait to see if it comes close to the Vis…..

  • trent

Whatever happened to coming up with a completely new design? It feels like they’re just tweeking his older shoes.

  • price

The subtitle says 8th signature shoe. Don’t forget about Adidas either. Technically it’s 11, unless he wasn’t a Mamba until Nike signed him.

  • price

No a couple look like storm trooper boots

  • price

    or maybe 13 I forgot about the KB8 2 & 3.

  • RayJr

I still wear my VI’s everyday even if I’m just lifting. I skipped out on the VII’s but will mos def get a pair of VIII’s.
Also you are 100% right about the lowtop sham. People are going to twist their ankles no matter what shoes they play in. A high top doesn’t offer more protection.

  • zogs19994

I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT THE LUNAR FOAM BREAKS DOWN AFTER LIKE THE FIRST 5 MONTHS
    -
YOU AND YOUR UGLY, BEAT DOWN RUNNING SHOES

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

Where did you hear that the Kobe VI’s are top 5 basketball shoe all time? I’ve heard that the Kobe V’s were the best in the Kobe Line. And that’s from sites like solecollector and nice kicks performance reviews.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i’ve had the VI’s for almost 2 years dummy

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Nice Kicks dubbed them the best basketball shoe on the market, and compared them specifically to the V – http://www.nicekicks.com/2011/02/performance-review-nike-zoom-kobe-vi/
    .

but more or less i was just giving the opinion of a whole bunch of lifelong hoopers that i’ve talked to.

  • zogs19994

    READ MY COMMENT AGAIN, DUMMY

  • RayJr

lol They’re not running shoes!…Just look like some

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah, the foam is fine, 19 months after your previously posted, dumbf*ck theory.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah they’ve done studies and everything to prove it. i never understand why people thought hightops provided more protection. you don’t roll your ankle from the top, you role it from the bottom. the only way not to roll your ankle would be to wear some elephant feet or something.

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

True. I’ve tried on the V’s and the VII’s. I don’t know if it’s my foot but I’m not a big fan of the way they shortened the Zoom. I prefer Zoom across the entire forefoot. My self test is like the review at sole collector http://solecollector.com/Sneakers/News/Performance-Review–Nike-Zoom-Kobe-VI1/#axzz2DkJcICKq

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

When has Kobe’s shoes ever had Lunar Foam in them?

  • zogs19994

IF IT’S SQUISHY….THEN THEIR BROKEN DOWN PIECES OF SHlT
    DONT REPLY
    #IDGAF

  • zogs19994

    …..YOU IDIOT
    #GTFO

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

They aren’t. And you obviously do, or you wouldn’t say anything

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

Oh, you have no clue what you’re talking about? I get it.

  • Chukaz

I think you can wear low tops depending on your weight. I lift weight and I’m pretty muscular so i can’t play in low tops. I roll my ankles easily. With that said, i use ankle support straps and i love kobe’s kicks. they don’t feel bulky and they really feel like the shoes are part of your body

  • robb

They haven’t used lunar foam since the Kobe IV. They’ve been using phylon for a while. Get some info first numbnuts.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

looking forward to some cool colorways..the del sol looks decent..will prefer a black and purple camo but cool! hope we get a chaos or grinch camo for xmas..we shall see! like what i see. cross between the v and vi which is a good thing!

  • aicomeback

at the end of the day if you land on ur ankle after jumping it doesnt matter what shoe it is or how many ankle braces ur ankle is gonna tweak …..tried the lebron 9s thought that ish was indestructible with or without an ankle brace because of how tough the sides were went up for a rebound during my summer league and my ankle just died lol

  • mhm

    me 3

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

Kobe 6 gave me the worse ankle Injurys I’ve ever gotten

  • http://twitter.com/_donuts Matthew Manzano

    weak ankles gave you that

  • None

I love it,can’t wait to see the bold black edition

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

had you momma weak on her knees tho

  • LJ

He said those shoes were designed with cars in mind. They were ugly as hell. Lots of my friends had them, but not me. Kobe even wore those shoes in games. Thank God he switched to Nike.

  • LJ

Landed on my ankle several times in my Kobe V, yet never sustained any major injury. Actually, never gotten to a point where it’s all swollen. Just hurts a little, but still able to run.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

hyperfuses fit and play like a champ tho! can’t go wrong with those

  • str8 from samoa

these look like walkin around shoes haha

  • T-man

    Ha! Good point

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol I wasn’t even aware they switched out the foam. But that does explain why they are still as hard as the day I got them. I just thought they processed the foam differently or something

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

love the shoe..we really need to see the inline-concord at this point!
