Crash Has A Collapsed Lung, Broken Rib

by Ryne Nelson

Let’s go straight to the incident:

A few points need to be made about this play. First, it was a tough collision and a strong move to the cup. It’s definitely sad to hear Wallace had to be brought to the hospital. This from Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer:

According to the team, Wallace lost 30-40 percent of the capacity in his left lung. He also suffered a non-displaced fracture of the fifth rib on his left side.

Doctors at Centinela Hospital inserted a tube in Wallace’s lung to help restore functional capacity. Wallace will spend at least Wednesday night in the hospital. Doctors do not anticipate releasing him before late Thursday.

Second, Crash is one of the most injury prone players in the League. Don’t sleep on the fact that he’s played over 55 games in just three seasons. Now consider that he’s he’s missed only four games all year…an injury, of any magnitude, was nigh.

A cracked rib isn’t something to laugh at, but it actually is a relief considering Wallace’s four concussions during his first four seasons with the Bobcats. Another concussion likely will be fatal.

Another point: It could be just me, but the entire Bobcats team needs to be put on blast. I feel almost guilty for doing this right after they went into L.A. and beat the Lakers, but it needs to be done. No legit team lets a man get KO’d with no response. Weak!

Lastly, a suspension for Bynum is not necessary. By no means did it seem malicious or as powerful as this. If it wasn’t called a Flagrant II or resulted in an ejection, a suspension shouldn’t even be considered.

Hat-tip to BETCATS, natch.

Bynum was trying on some dikembe mutumbo elbow technique there….I love Wallace’s nickname “crash”, suits him. And this team needs a couple of bruisers or to atleast retaliate with some straight up stance….it’s all they would need, get some of that “MJ in your face” happening. They are one ‘Ron Artest type’ away from making the playoffs. Next year this team will be my second favourite.

The more you watch NBA games – or really any sporting event – the more often you see players put their elbows out to create space when trying to block shots or dunk (check the positioning of Brandon Roy’s elbow on his dunk over the Clipper center). I am actually amazed rib injuries are not more commonplace, but this was just a freak thing.

i don’t think he wanted to hurt him, but it was definitely a bad play by bynum, he didn’t go for the ball and he protected HIS body by using his arms instead. He shouldn’t be playing D that way. I think he should be fined a small amount just to let him know he needs to be making basketball plays, not hockey plays, but no suspension. And who care if the refs didn’t call a flagarant, they have shown they don’t always make the correct calls

  • Gaz

hahahahahaha he’s so fired up. You lose a lounge as well UGLY BETTY???

  • Joe A

I think it warrants a suspension. Not just because it was a deliberate, dirty play, but if Garnett got suspended earlier this season for his little love tap on Bogut, than this deserves one. Also the other four bobcats on the floor should be suspended for not sticking up for their boy.If this happened to, say John Starks, you better believe that Oakley or Anthony Mason woul’ve knocked Bynum the f*** out.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Sarah: Shaq’s been in the league for a long @ss time and he still hasn’t learned.
THAT’S why he shouldn’t be a damn All-Star! Compared to Al Jefferson he fricken sucks!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Get well soon, Mr. Wallace.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Co-Sign Joe A about the teammates part.

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Susan, am i really fired up, or are you fired up, and we all know that when Susan is fired up, she m@sterbates all over the stove. Go get messy you!

  • Andrej

anouther dat to day for my fantasy team i wud suspend him for one game it was clear he dident go for the ball also beacuse his lung collapsed is anouther reason to suspend him

  • ClydeSays

Oof. Hope Wallace can recover and get back to the game. That was a tough foul but Wallace has got to be one of the most injured players active players.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

THe Difference between when Shaq fouls someone and when Andrew Bynum fouls someone, Shaq tries to keep them from getting hurt. He does not take guys out of the air with his elbow to protect himself. Regardless bynum could have moved if he was scared, but he did not try at the ball at all. If he Does NOT GET Suspended then the league is a bunch of hypocrits. Especially considering Bynum needs to learn from this, Wallace is in the hospital, and is not the last guy that is going to come through the key at Andrew Bynum.

  • Waters1981

Andrej: Just because his lung collapsed is not a reason to suspend him. To me that is the equivalency of suspending someone for having their foot landed on and causing an ankle sprain.

If Bynum gets suspended it should be because he did not make a defensive basketball move.

  • ab_40

i’m with joe a. on this one.

teams don’t have those tough guys anymore. that fight for the ball and for their teammates. they didn’t even get in his face about it. It’s a damn shame.

it’s a dirty intentional foul. not a disqualifying one but he needs a 2 game suspension.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

thats not saying Shaq does not commit questionable fouls, but nothing that can result in death or hospitalization. (foul being shaq’s fault)>…And side not if bynum did not elbow wallace and got his arm down he still might have undercut him…AND if you pause the video at 39 seconds you will see that Bynum initiated contact BEFORE Wallace left the Ground, and if that is not clear enough you can look at Bynum’s foot at the same time 39 seconds and you can see he is stepping on Wallace’s. It is a very very bad foul, intentional or not and he should be taught, (punished or not) not to do it

  • http://www.sprint.com/sero dma

michael redd one day. then gerald wallace. fantasy gods are hating me. there goes all the talks of gerald wallace getting graded with adam morrison before deadline

  • Gaz

    hahahahaha far too easy BETTY

  • Cp34mVP

DMA, Gerald Wallace, And Adam Morrison=Not Happening….

Gerald, Is Just as injury prone as T-Mac is now. The dude should retire. He’s putting stress on his team, seriously. No Offense. But Yeah.. Hope he recovers soon

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

damn! Air is crackling with the angry vibe here. 300+ comments weren’t enough in “post up” to discuss all aspects of this? And the Gaz/Bets frenemy situation is mad weird.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

THE ONLY PERSON WHO KNOWS IF THERE WAS ANY INTENT IS ANDREW BYNUM….. THAT WAS A DIRTY AND RECKLESS PLAY, HE KNEW WHERE HE WAS PUTTING HIS ELBOWS, I COULDNT BELIEVE IT WASNT A FLAGRANT TWO. WALLACE WAS IN THE AIR FOR ABOUT 3.5 MINUTES BEFORE BYNUM GOT THERE ELBOWS HIGH, NOT EVEN GOING FOR THE BALL. IF THATS NOT A FLAGRANT TWO, WHAT IS???? HOW CAN THE REFS SAY IF SOMEONE HAS INTENT OR NOT??

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

GOTTA LOVE THE CLASSY LA CROWD BOOING. AND I LOST ALL RESPECT FOR EMEKA OKAFOR.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

and yea i was yelling, big whoop, wanna fight about it?

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

Like I said tarzan at 39 seconds on the video you can clearly see Bynum initiated contact but other then that i am completely agreeing with you

  • whooo!

nbk, did you see shaq level wallace w/ a blindside pick where he raised his shoulders/arms to lean into wallace? this was like the previous game before l.a.

  • whooo!

though i don’t think that pick was as bad as bynum’s hit because it was on the ground, and wallace’s teammates shoulda & coulda warned him.

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

    Get well soon Crash. :(

  • http://myspace.com/roos_pointguard_8 Swaggalishous

Ohhh so it was the contact with bynum that injured him;; not the fall

  • rikson

Thats definetly a flagrant 2 to me. Why are all the people (including refs) always checking the players history. Who cares if bynum has a history of flagrants or not? Shouldnt the refs try to react on the things happening on the court? The same thing with shotblockers -> once they get the reputation theyll get the “no-calls”. I mean a foul is a foul, a block is ablock and a flagrant 2 is a flagrant 2. -> In this case, dude was just frustrated. 2 mins left and a five point def, at home against CHA -> i just thought bynum is classy guy…

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Rybe- can you ban ‘Gaz’ please? Or send him an email or something? That’s disgraceful.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    *Ryne. Apologies.

  • tom

just imagine someone did that to kobe…

  • http://www.phxsuns.net SwingMan

Bynum was leading with his elbow – only Laker homers can’t open their eyes enough to see that the kid was making no attempt at the damn ball.

And Ryne, that little Detroit/Suns clip you posted above – Shaq was going for the ball against Stuckey with BOTH arms up above his head. That was incidental contact & BOTH players were up in the air. Meanwhile, Bynum couldn’t keep up & the only part that was raised was the one elbow that hit Wallace. That should go without saying, but, seeing as how at least half of Slam Online here knob slobs the Lakers to the point of sheer blind homerism, the task of having to spell it all out is obviously required…..

“GOTTA LOVE THE CLASSY LA CROWD BOOING. AND I LOST ALL RESPECT FOR EMEKA OKAFOR.” – that’s all I wanted to say. Oh, yes and the referees missed the point once again.

  • GAZ

hahahahaha Hursty you’re even more touchy feely than UGLY BETTY. You’re as soft as butter mate, but can’t expect much more from someone who grew up in Sydney.

  • GAZ

G-String and She-Mac injured at the same time!!! hahahaha life don’t get much sweeter than this aye Hursty ole’ bud???

  • Son of Shawn

    Get well soon Crash

  • Son of Shawn

“… considering Wallace’s four concussions during his first four seasons with the Bobcats” and counting yesterday´s one, it makes five, but ¿How many lives the (Bob)cats have?

  • GAZ

No wonder Kennelly decided to leave Hursty, with lil USA-loving punces like you walking the streets of Syd.

  • ab_40

if that happened to kobe there would be a 65 game suspension for hurting david stern’s adopted son

  • Andy

Gaz – the perfect example of what happens on the sixth concussion.

As for Crash, he HAS to retire for the sake of his life. Didn’t Steve Young have to retire from football for the same reason?

No Betcats, pause the video at the 50sec mark and you’ll see the Andrew stepped towards him with his arms raised. The motion seemed like he was going for a strip down or a block up top. Wallace got on him so fast that Wallace’s momentum actually turned Andrew around and it actually seemed like Andrew was headed into a duck position. Doesn’t look like this was on purpose. He wanted to play the ball, but the ball was gone.

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

Ehh… yeah it was a flagrant, but it’s not like he straight up slammed him to the ground or anything. Clearly he was going for body, but malicious intent to injure… I don’t see it.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

not a big fan of the article, which pretty much stated that Bynum is innocent before the case is reviewed. turning the table and blasting the bobcats team is like blaming the victim’s family for not doing enough.
as for the play itself, it’s a case of end result being worse than the crime. i believe the size and strength of Bynum and fragility of GForce made this a freak accident. i feel this wouldn’t have happened if it’s two other players involved in the same play, and we wouldn’t have this discussion.

  • Jacob

damn hope to see him play again this year
