Slamadaday: Jarret Johnson on Mason Ambler

He channels some NBA JAM. He’s on FIRE!

After you’ve replayed this video 10 times, think about exactly how many highlights we’ve missed. Finding an obscure Division-II cram just five years ago? Not happening.

This dunk comes from Anderson University’s gym, located in South Carolina’s northwest corner. The gym is probably smaller than your high school’s.

Being able to quickly share videos like this is exactly why streaming video has become internet fixture. Thanks to technology, heads around the world are spinning after Anderson University’s 89-72 dismantling of the Coker College Cobras last night.

With 3:28 remaining in the second half, Jarret Johnson, a sophomore from Greensboro, N.C., provided the highlight of the college season. The 6-3, 190-pound guard glided over the defender’s shoulder on his way to the cup.

The dunk was one for the ages, but the celebration was just as classic. Stephen Cobb (no. 44) gives high-fives to random people on the sidelines. Cheerleaders come up to talk trash. The victim (6-6 junior swingman Mason Ambler) just lies on the floor. Not a single teammate comes near to help him up.

Johnson finished the game with 10 points on 4-6 shooting, 6 boards, 3 steals and 1 highlight of a lifetime.

Thanks to Rachel for the roster tips.

He walked up the dude’s chest. Defender moved his foot at the last second. POSTERIZED!

BET, what’s the word on Anderson University. I know it’s a small school, but what’s its rep?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Watch the video closely. Does anyone think Johnson used no. 32′s head as leverage with his left hand?

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I’m laughing at the dunker’s teammates. Two of the screamed in the face of the kid who got dunked on. That was brutal. One of them was even mugging the dude as he walked to the free throw line like he dunked the ball or something.
Also, that could have been a charge, but the way the dude went almost over the other player’s shoulder saved him. It was obvious that the player who got dunked down realy didn’t get knocked down. Plus, I think the refs were too intimidated to make a charge call.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Allen, it definitely was a charge. But you’re right. Who makes that call?

  • Jackie Moon

I hate that type of “Defense”. Go for the block, don’t just try to stand where the guy’s going to jump and/or land. It reminds me a lot of Kobe’s dunk on Steve Nash in the playoffs. Steve tried to slide under Kobe’s path, too, but I think that if you’re getting to your defensive position right as the offensive player is jumping, that should not be a charge. Play for the block, don’t try to get a charge on a player about to take off.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Ryne, not much. I was trying to quote my good friends at wikipedia but they dont even have a page. Basicaly this guy is the most known dude ever. But it just proves my point of how much talent NC has produced.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

oh wait they do have a wiki!! And it says they have 0 notable alummni. I guess this guy is the first.

on a sidenote: who won the game?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Offensive foul. You can’t use another person’s body to propel yourself. My first view (off ESPN on my home HD) had me up off my desk chair. But upon further review, it ain’t legal. Crazy, fun, and wild, but an outlawed move, nonetheless. Love the NBA Jams analogy, perfect! My sophomore year in college was largely about the Milwaukee Bucks’ Brad Lohaus and (the coded)ChowChow.

Never sure who that nerdy-looking, comic-book-store-runnin-dude was, but when he was on fire I had the entire city of Providence on lockdown.

BET, that is an argument worth starting. If you can igonore the pro game all together.

    best college state? i’m listening….

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

state, duks, unc…I think it’s kinda on lock Cub…although I’m not a huge college hoophead so i could be totally wrong.
He used the dudes head as leverage. He goes up and ‘flattens out’ before going up again, at first I thought it was because he used his knee to elevate, but the hand does look fishy..great spot Ryne.

  • http://web.mac.com/roaringred bbaby

    This was just nasty.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I dont see where the dunker pushed off with his left hand…if he had surely that 6’6 dude would have did something other than lie there shawn bradley style…

  • RG

I was at this game and witnessed this last night… the reason everyone went crazy and the other players got in his face is because the play before this, Ambler cheap shotted AU’s point guard and took him down and the officials didn’t see it. It was super dirty. By the way, no. 44 is Stephen Cobb, not Joshua Beale.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Stop over-analyzing it and enjoy the dunk!!!! It was insane, and you guys sound like the dunk was a chore to watch. Enjoy it for what it was….someone getting boomed on.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Also, is that a midget on the bench?!?! This game had everything!!!!

  • ab_40

Small d2 gyms where amazing happens haha

  • vic21

what is really dumb is that guy celebrates like “damn I do this every week” when in the inside he musta have been like “YO what the f*ck did I just did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1″

  • Heals

    The audio is classic too!

  • bone

If you ask me, you shouldn’t call a charge if the player dunks the ball.

  • Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo

rg, i was wondering why the people were booing when the video starts….i would not let that happen to me

  • Tommy Vercetti

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

    who won?

  • RG

    Anderson won 89-72

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Yes there is a midget on the bench Zee. Well spotted. haha.

  • WhaHuh

He humbled 2 players there. Filthy

  • räuber hotzenplotz

what a great dunk, but a foul obviously (and yes, that does matter) – i wonder if refs will ever have guts to obey the rules of the game but they probably never will, what a shame, also the other guy screaming at the 6.6 while on the ground is classless behaviour, he did not do anything to deserve act like that- what a bitch!

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

I think the victim was still moving when Johnson took off. ;-)

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Also, if you’re not going to try for the block, you should get out the way. Let this be a lesson to everyone who goes for a whistle instead of the ball.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

And Zee!!!!!, you’re right. There *was* a little person on the bench!

  • niQ

dirrrty. that kid got sh!itted on

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Cub, i was refering to 2 things: Best talent and Best College. One day the Bobcats will do some major sh!t and rockin Hornets atire wont make you a devil worshiper but until then….All i am saying is my state created players like MJ, Chris Paul, James Worthy, David Thompson, David West, and i could go all day telling you was born here. Or colleges; Earl The Pearl Monroe, Rasheed Wallace, Bob McAdoo, MJ (again), Vince Carter, Antwan Jamison, Kenny Smith, JJ the Vagina Poet Redd!ck, Carlos Boozer, Elton Brand, Grant Hill, Chrisian Latner and i could keep going about that too. Oh and for pros, Baron Davis, Alonzo Morning, Rex Chapman, Jamal ‘Monster Mash’ Mashburn, Vlade Divacs, The Draft Rights To Kobe Bryant, Gerald Wallace, Steve Smith, Emeka Okafor, Raymond Felton, maybe even DJ and i could keep going about that too. But i wont. Point being, NC is the best basketball state of all time, and i havent even discussed street ball yet.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

David Thompson is most defiantly from Shelby NC.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

The Kobe thing was a joke, but CHRISTIAN LATTENER IN COLLEGE>>>>>

  • YouAintDressedForThisAffair

    thats an And 1
dude is still moving when Jarrett takes off.
he leans backwards….which warrents a defensive foul
and because no other dribbles were taken, thats an AND1

  • Sage

From accounts of the game homeboy that got dunked on was throwing elbows and playing pretty dirty. The yells in his face and the applause from the crowd as well as the dunk itself is karma in action. Dude already had a technical foul I believe he was later ejected. The dunker had class and simply removed himself from the fray after he knew he just ruined this kids basketball season.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

did he actually dunk it though? Or was it a lay in right over the rim?

  • The Promise

Holy crap! He jumped over his head!

  • L

    …and a midget

  • Naijadelta

Who care about a charge, a win? this is one for the ages. Sorry dude

  • chris

wow! look at the guys teammates. that is a video for the ages.

  • chappy

Mason Ambler is the man and a great guy I work with. Typical of the kid who taunts him while he was on the floor. It was clearly a charge so all of this should be negated.
