Slamadaday: Jerryd Bayless on Bobby Simmons

‘Tearing down the Nets’…Cliche, but true!

The Nets had hopes of beating Portland Trail Blazers last night. Legitimate hopes, at that, until this rookie put those hopes to rest. Portland, missing Steve Blake with a separated right shoulder, was forced to give significant minutes to Jerryd Bayless. The 20-year-old took advantage of the consistent minutes and exploited the Nets’ sieve-like interior defense, scoring all six of his field goals in the paint and getting to the line 11 times.

Jerryd Bayless can’t shoot, and his game is clearly has more shooting guard than point guard. This is why Nate McMillan’s kept the talented Bayless on the fringe of the Blazer rotation thus far. But against a team that gives up the third-most and one opportunities in the League, Jerryd Bayless had a field day. He hammered this down on Bobby Simmons (who embodied the typical, tough as nails Nets’ defense to the tee), got the foul, and led the Blazers to their 24th W, giving the team sole possession of the 5th seed in the West.

Sick dunk. Bayless has some Monta-like atheleticism. His offensive game isn’t as polished, but he has elite atheleticism.

i think he’s more explosive than monte, he’s just finally getting some burn with steve blake on the shelf for a couple of weeks. az wildcats stand up!!

moments later, bayless was hit by a bird… too soon?

Can’t shoot? The guy has admittedly struggled finding his groove in little fits and starts of playing time in the NBA, but he was a 40% shooter from the college three point line, so he definitely has the potential to be a decent threat once he adjusts to the NBA line and gets some consistent burn (after all he’d only played in 160 minutes before last night’s game).

Yeah, JB can shoot, and he is a shooting guard. See my comments in the Post Up about him. Saw the dunk live: sick!

who posted this? Just curious so i can ignore his/her opinion on anything, ever. Cant shoot?

I think in the end, Bayless is going to be a very important piece to this young Blazer squad. He has more intensity and drive than anyone else that I know of on the team. Blazers are going to be mighty, mighty good if Bayless can do a little more of this with consistency. Then Webster comes back at SF. Watch out. Potential all stars all the way around.

…and one more thing. You can’t tell from this video whether he was fouled or not. It looks like he may have gotten slapped as he went by, but you just can’t tell. If you’re using this to pass judgement, it’s a pretty lame assessment. Bottom line is – it didn’t make a difference either way.

he got crossed over pretty bad by Devin Harris in this game as well.

Boing, I made the comment about Bayless’ shot. Let me know the next time he makes (or attempts for that matter) a triple.

  • collin Posted: Jan.16 at 4:31 pm
when a team’s third point guard option is a guy with this much potential, and can get 23 in a game, that is a deep team

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Jan.16 at 5:31 pm
That Devin cross/ drop that Bayless was hit with deserves some mention too. one of the nastiest of the year and ther have been alot

Great night – I was watching that game. I cant hate on the yougster.

  • kasey Posted: Jan.16 at 10:06 pm
dude he can shoot did anyone watch any of his games last year at arizona? or in the summer league for that matter. just give him some time and he’ll be able at least a 42% shooter, he has just been rushing his shoot. I’ve watched every blazers game this year and he has just been rushing a bit. i think after this game he’ll settle down and be fine. Also he doesn’t need to shoot many threes on this team we have 3 point shooters. go blazers!

  • Will Lee Posted: Jan.16 at 10:16 pm
    where’s the foul?

  • jrp14 Posted: Jan.17 at 6:42 pm
Bayless would be getting mentioned with Rose and Mayo if he was on a lesser team….ya I’m a blazer fan…its all truth though

  • Hursty Posted: Jan.19 at 3:04 am
so collin: do you consider Houston a deep team since they’ve got 4 guys who can have 23 point games from the PG/SG position? Rafer, Brooks, Wafer, Tmac, Bones. That’s 5 actually ;)
