Video: LeBron’s Travel, and DeShawn’s Continued Dislike of Him

by Marcel Mutoni

According to LeBron James, what he did last night in the waning moments of the Cavs/Wiz game was perfectly legal. Hell, he trademarked it. So don’t even try to steal it! It’s called a “crab dribble”, whatever that means, and here it is, for your viewing pleasure:

With all due respect, Mr. Crab, that sure looks like a travel to me.

One person who enjoyed the call more than others was Washington’s DeShawn Stevenson. Here’s what he had to say about it and the man who committed the violation, via the DC Sports Bog:

“I don’t care,” DeShawn said. “It’s whatever. I don’t like him. I don’t like that dude.”

Caron Butler brushed off DeShawn’s comments and said this “feud” is going to be life-long (fun!), and besides, he was far too busy thanking God for the refs finally calling a travel on Mr. James.

first … and yes it is a travel!!

  • Herfdawg

I’d like to see more of this. nothing worse than losing a rivalry game because of a (BAD) no call.

  • neaorin

Travel. Although I have more of an issue with The King taking that three at the buzzer when like half the team shoots better than him from deep.

  • http://www.nba.com jamie

good call, about time refs started callin travels in the nba.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

That was a lot closer to not being a travel then it actually looked. He should have leaped after he took the jump step instead of taking another step to get closer to the rim. It wasn’t as bad as the one he pulled off in the playoff series, that’s for sure.

  • dsleepy

i’m w/caron on this one…this kid gets too much preferential treatment and david stern and the refs need to get off his n*ts.. does anyone else remember the “blocking” foul called on jared jeffries, the one even charles barkely was complaining about?

or how about this “game winner” a couple years back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhbM6uuCt74

  • kev

lebron is my favorite player but he does travel from time time time. He needs to work on not doing it since he will probably be called a lot more for it now

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Bron’s “trademark” line is silly, but it’s also legit — everyone knows he does this, has done it for years, and more often than not he DOES get away with it. Another reminder, not that we needed it, of the inconsistency of NBA officiating.

  • http://slamonline.com polowthaJon

I dont know Eboy, the tape shows 3 steps after picking up his dribble. Just a good move done at a bad time in a hostile environment. That’s all. Big up to the King for trying though.

  • Clockwork

yeah the refs are just two and a half years late in calling LeBron’s travels

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Not sure how this comes close to a ‘crab dribble,’ but it’s probably closer to that than it was to any other legal move.

  • http://www.hoopmixtape.com Simon S.Y Lawy

    Lebrooom travel like a whor*…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

DeShawn didn’t have to come out and say that he didn’t like Bron, we all knew that . . . Next thing we know Stevenson will be letting Kobe run by him just to spite James.

    …and who cares about D.Stevenson…???

  • Kieran

Lebron has always travelled going to the basket and almost always gets away with it

  • Squirrel7

And just when I thought NBA refs would never catch on to his 3-step specials! I remember when I was a kid, and my NBA Basketball Basics book had the entire opening chapter dedicated to the rules of ‘traveling’ yet obviously no-one gave Lebron (or many of the other superstars in the league) this same book…….

  • http://slamonline.com Tzvi T

Commentators need to get off of Lebron’s Scrotum. Whether it was or wasn’t a travel, they don’t even consider the option that it was.

  • Squirrel7

In fact, the main reason I thought the US could come unstuck in the Olympics was that impartial referees might actually call some of the NBA players on their numerous travels…..

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com WFNY Craig

LeBron gets away with some stuff to be sure, but let’s not get carried away. LeBron is also victim of the Shaq syndrome where he doesn’t get a lot of little contact calls because he is so big and strong. Dwyane Wade on the other hand gets flicked on the way to the hole and because he goes flying off in a completely different direction, he gets the call. They create no incentive (almost) for going up strong and fighting through contact the way LeBron does it.

  • http://listentoleon.net ListenToLeon

The call was a good one, and I agree with Caron Butler. It’s about time for NBA refs to grow a pair and make the proper calls against a star player in situations like the one above, instead of letting things slide.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

Not so much a ‘crab dribble’ as a ’18 step dribble’.

  • http://4point0show.com Wes

I mean, he hopped- then took two more steps…

  • Wiz

Nothin better then the wizards beating the cavs. And Lebron and his Crabtravel or whateva he called it, only james could make a thousand headlines because of a travel we should be focussing on more interesting things like deshawn stevenson in a velour suit talkin trash to lebron and he aint even playin that should be the headlines lol…..jus another reason of why i like the wizards so much

  • kiran

crab dribble WTF? That is such a travel , an wats up with DeShawn and bron?

  • Dutch Rob

hate to say it but he did travel.
But Deshawn needs to shut it. After asking your coach to bench you cuz you’re not hitting your shots:S.

  • Dre

It is a travel but D. Stevenson is a bum and a scrub… he can’t hold Lebron’s jock and know one cares whether or not u like him or not. If you can’t check him or if u r at not at least in the same league as the other player u need to shut up.

  • Wiz

Well it is a fact the deshawn has been hurt and not once has he blamed his struggles on that so give him some credit…..

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Hop-step with another step is a travel. Hop step always counts as two steps. But, they let a lot of players get away with that move.

  • Joe

Definately a travel, agree consistency is needed on these calls. correct me if i’m wrong but if he didnt touch the ball with his second hand until he left his feet in the hop, he would still have an active dribble so effectively the move would be legal yes? Just want a little confirmation that’s were the mistake was.

  • http://hoops4life.com overtime

Lebrons steps count like his jersey number

  • The Mann

Lebron is getting way to much credit in the league. He’s good but not as good as everyone makes him out to be. Mr. clutch? I think not. All I can say is it’s about time somebody called something on this guy. The league treats him like he’s MJ. I want all you lebron freaks to get of his n*tz. Please!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Khalid Salaam

everytime you guys criticize stevenson for criticizing lebron you guys look like bron d*ck huggers. for real.

  • http://hypebeast.com Spaceship Jay

D*ck huggers! Salaam is right though. You cannot possibly be liked by everyone on this planet. So let Stevenson dislike him, more entertainment for us! D*CK HUGGERS! That’s hilarious.

  • http://hypebeast.com Spaceship Jay

Oh yes, that is a phrase that will be used in many a Xbox Live arguments.

  • rabn21

there are way more players than Lebron getting away with blatent travelling. id say for every travel that is called there is more than 10 not called, im not even kidding. but it will always be that way because it takes less effort to do nothing than to have the players adjust.

  • a_whiteman

Khalid, the only reason we rip into deshawn is because who is he??? A bench player on a team that lebron has sonned numerous times the last 4 years

  • neaorin

I criticize Stevenson for doing dumb things like blowing on his hand when his team is down by 16 points.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

If you’re going to complain about Lebron’s traveling, complaing about WAde’s carrying.
Then complain about Nash’s push offs.
Then complain about Iverson and Manu’s flopping.
Then complain about Chris Paul’s cheap shots.
    Just complain about basketball.
    Or, enjoy the effing game.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

And I’m glad Stevenson doesn’t like Lebron. Makes for more entertaining basketball. Lots of players dont’ like other players in the league. Stevenson just has the balls to speak his mind.
Do y’all honestly think people LIKE Kobe?
    Come on.
    Be serious.

  • http://hypebeast.com Spaceship Jay

But is that a reason to criticize and dislike Stevenson? I find his actions and comments to be quite ammusing. What was funnier than Stevenson doing the “I can’t feel my face” dance while the Wizards were getting smacked by 20? Nothing.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

His “signature move” he says. Crab dribble, he calls it. Even blasted the refs mildly for calling it (bravo btw, refs) Three steps is 3 STEPS Bron. Sure they usually do not make these kinda calls in crunchtime in the League, but much appreciation for the ref who recognized this. And this whole Stevenson affair? Meh.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Kha delivering his brand of “wisdom” earlier in the comments. Nice.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

This cat took like FIVE steps. Bron, get over it.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

I think he and DWade have been getting away with the “crab dribble” for a while now.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

FACT: Patrick Ewing only took three dribbles throughout the course of his career.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

the travesty that was the 06 first round matchup. in two different games lebron got away with blatantly obvious travels AT THE END OF THE GAME! in game 3, i believe it was, he took 3 steps, took a couple more little steps, went up for the shot, someone contested really well, then landed, then shot the ball, so he traveled 3 times in one play at the end of the game.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

all this appendage talk reminds me of Chris Rock’s special where he was critisizing girl’s dancing to L’il john’s get low, then proceeded to make his own version called “slap her with a D***”. Too funny.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

even more so than some travels and carries, when a player jumps to shoot, lands, then releases the ball, that kinda pisses me off.

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

lebron has “guru – the traveler” on repeat before games

  • http://slamonline.com Khalid Salaam

  • http://ldshoops.blogspot.com bakers’ dozen (12-13)

I referee high school games, and that is definitely a travel. You have to come down with both feet at the same time if you’re doing a jump stop type of move, and his feet came down separately, which is a travel on any level.

Come on King James, don’t be such a Prince…learn the rules.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

  • http://slamonline.com Khalid Salaam

Uh, yeah i’m still waiting. Don’t be shy now. I know who you are.

  • http://fklsd.com Jukai

Do you mean literally or figuratively, Kha? Because that will effect my response.

  • Cizzo

He walked on that move but its routine overseas footwork ask Gionobli and a great advantage move if it don’t get called.

  • http://nba.com tealish

A travel, for sure, but no unlike most of his drives. His only mistake is being too slow and deliberate with his massive steps. Looked terrible, at Washington, had to call that ish.

  • Los Man

So do you think DeShawn threw out his Lil Wayne CD after seeing him in Lebron’s commercial?

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

ginobili doesnt travel like this, most of the time his stuff isnt travel. he takes his two steps, his are just funky looking because he always steps around defenders, everyone else moves in pretty much a straight line, manu is real herky jerky.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Can you really call it a “crab dribble” if you never dribble the ball?

  • riggs

someone call shenanigans on lebron please

  • http://fklsd.com Jukai

Tarzan: So you don’t watch many Spurs games, huh?

  • The Question

this feud between Deshawn and LeBron is getting borderline ridiculous.

But that’s a travel if I ever saw one. LeBron must have been getting lessons from Wade…

  • Wiz

This post is funny to me lebron crab dribbles w/o a dribble and ginobli travels because he is herky jerky lol

  • awesomepossum

Lebron will now probably sell more tickets when he travels.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Kha, this is not really about LeBron as much as it is about DeShawn. The guy has proven on countless times throughout his career that he is an idiot. Even Gilbert called him on it after last year’s playoffs. You’re talking about a guy that does the Yayo dance when he’s down by 30. He’s a clown. I was always told that you needed to be about it in order to talk about it or else you’re just a punk. When you get sonned numerous times by the same dude, you ought to shut the f— up.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

LeBron said that ‘he was not going down that road this year’. What does it say about Deshawn when the guy doesn’t even feel the need to respond to your idiotic comments anymore? LeBron made a mistake last year by bringing in the Soulja Boy / Jay-z comparison last year. I think he learned that he has absolutely nothing to gain from this.

Z, there’s no use arguing with Khalid on this. LeBron stole his lunch money back in junior high, and my man has never gotten over it.

  • Sari

i dun post much but heres sumthin i gotta say; if theres one person here i got respect for its khalid.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

I should mention: The fact that LeBron was like 7 years old when Khalid was in junior high probably explains why the pain has lingered.

  • seppo

If LeBron had actual one-on-one moves like Kobe he wouldn´t have to resort to crab dribbles in order to get to the cup. How about a crossover or a spin dribble. All he does is pick a direction and go hard. It works for him most of the time, so you can´t blame him. But just like his jumper it´s not fun to watch.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

And cats need to stop crying about the “travel” in that Wizards series.
Come one, Lebron traveled, but it wasn’t an egregious one. Plus, you can’t call that travel on him after the refs let two obvious fouls slide. First fould happened on a reach in before Lebron made his move, second fould happened when he got to rim and met Ruffin. If they let the fouls slide, they had to let a minor travel slide.

  • Jackie Moon

“The refs should be consistently wrong” is not a good argument for not calling traveling on Lebron.

    Next up, DWade!

After that, get Kobe, although he does it less frequently than those aforementioned two players.

Then maybe Ginobili, but I think he just goes side to side, so it looks awkward even when it’s not a travel.

  • killianc14

As much as i like LeBron it was a travel :(

  • Marco

It was a travel! But it was close. Bron should go and ask Dejan Bodiroga how to do the move the right way instead of claiming it was legal and acting like he invented that move by giving it a crappy …i mean crabby name…Don’t get me wrong, I ain’t trying to hate on LBJ, but players in Europe have been doing this move since the game crossed the Atlantic…Without travelling…Maybe the refs now star to call his numerous travels on breakaways, too…He’s still a great player, like no other before him. Which doesn’t mean he’s the greatest ever. That’ll forever be Mike (ya heard me Kobe?)!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I wonder if this move will be downloaded onto NBALive 09 Online?

  • Mike

I love how LeBron later tries to reinact what he did to the ref. His reinaction shows him doing the jump=stop correctly by landling on both feet at the same time then jumping off both feet. But the replay shows that he landed on one foot nd the the other foot then jumped of the last foot. We all know what he was trying to do, but he did it wrong. This happens all the time in pick up ball. Players not knowing how to do the jmp stop correctly.

  • seppo

James just isn´t fundamentally sound. And he´s overrated. During the Olympics – without the special treatment he gets in the NBA – he was just the fifth best player on Team USA. I hate it that he will be named MVP this year, just because the media has decided beforehand that it´s his turn.

  • Jacob

deshawn needs to shut up, we all know he doesnt like lebron damn!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

3 steps = travel. Its that simple.

  • Jess

I just dont get why DeShawn wastes him time taking jabs at LBJ…I mean is it because he knows he will never be a fraction the player James is?…..

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

But i think Deshawn Stevenson should spend more time trying to get on Lebron’s level and less time trying to have a petty beef that leads to a grown man calling other grown men d!ck huggers.

  • seppo

I think DeShawn is just pissed that the media portray LeBron as the best player in the world, when the actual players who play against him know that he really isn´t all that great.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

5th best player on the team? It’s biased/lunatic people like seppo that makes the msg board not as enjoyable as it once was. I miss talking hoops with knowledgeable and articulate fans of the game.

  • Jackie Moon

So where’s the post about how the heckling “got to Lebron”? Ohhh, I see it only works the other way, where if you heckle Lebron and he does well, then he was INSPIRED to win and it’s your fault he started trying so hard!

  • Takam

CRAB DRIBBLE: using your back/body/legs to protect your dribble as you pound it in front of you. (What LeBron did before his multi-step drive)

I’m kinda surprised that there seems to be very little knowledge of this term – espn had some show going on and on about LBJ trademarking his move – luckily they got Jalen Rose on who corrected them and explained what a crab dribble was, and that it was unrelated to the actual travel. I guess it is a term more common overseas than in the US.

  • Aaron

He’s still the Best player in the L so WHO CARES!

  • Greedy_Genius

Wow I’m apalled and pissed at all this Lebron Jock hugging, c’mon people he’s not that good the media is just trying to put him on a level that he’s not earned, he’s a okay player but far from great, oh and one more thing: His shoes sucks big time.

  • ClydeSays

C’mon! He’s a superstar! Give him the SUPERSTAR calls! Wade, Kobe, LeBron. They need and want your phantom calls!

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

Sorry LeBron. You are one of my fave players and all but that is indeed a TRAVEL. Crystal clear…

  • Jackie Moon

Even Brian Windhorst, Cavs beat writer, agrees that it was a travel!

It doesn’t matter anyway, Lebron is still one of the best.

  • Logan

earlier in the fourth quarter, no way that gets called. With the game on the line, the refs were not going to mess up a blatant travel. It looks worse than it actually is, looks like he has taken more than 3 steps because of the hop. It was a travel.
Lebron will probably light up the Wiz next time.
Can we move on now please?

  • http://www.jcherot.blogspot.com Tripset30

Karma for the travel in ’06. The Wizards just wish that the refs made that call in a meaningful game instead of a game in a season where the Wiz are counting down the days until the Blake Griffin sweepstakes. If you’re a Wizards’ fan you have to be sick… out of all the years they could have been a lottery team they picked the worst one.

Then again, there’s still a lot of season left. And who knows, maybe this whole crustacean bounce thing will change their season…

  • http://thestartingfive.net Michael Tillery

Definitely a travel. He was talking to me when he gave his explanation. Great game. Mad drama when these teams play.

  • Bruno

worst than the ugly toddler travel is coming up cursing the referee for calling it
man, all games are televised nowadays… we can see it again on video.
    james is effin ridiculous

When did “the jump step” become legal and why? If a player picks up his dribble and takes a step then does that “jump step” it’s already 3 steps then some players take another step. Come on folks, every few years kids enter the NBA doing illegal moves and the L adjusts to them b/c they are the future….Just like some “assists” these days aren’t really assists. A pass to a jump shooter…where is the advancement to the hoop. I love CP3 but some of his steals aren’t steals, they are turnovers. The one he broke the record on was a turnover that rolled to him. lol.

I love to watch the players complain even when it is obvious they are wrong.

Dam all these deshawn stevenson haters.” He’s jus hating on lebron cause he’s not as good as him” blah blah blah u yall act like deshawn says something about lebron after every game. When they play deshawn just lets it be known he dont like that n**ga dam its that simple it really aint hatin its just two people who dont like each other. And you really gotta know the whole story before u hate on deshawn. CANT FEEL MY FACE!

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

a “jump step” or jump stop as it is often called after one step is perfectly legal, if you leave the ground with one foot then the second foot that touches the ground becomes your pivot foot, and as long as that foot stays on the ground you can lift up and put down the other foot as much as you want. LeBron did travel but if his feet touched and left the ground at the same time, or if his lead foot stayed on the ground and left the ground last then he would not have traveled. He did travel, but he had a good idea.

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

Bron just dusted his shoulders off

  • Winslowalrob

Most of the people who aren’t getting up in arms about the travel have not had their favorite team consistently screwed by Lebron’s BS. It is not that Lebron is the best player in the NBA (which he is not, I would rank him third) and deserves to have the refs/ the L treat him with kids gloves (For further proof, watch any playoff series where Lebron gets fouled hard once and pusses out, and after that it never happens again in the series, for SOME reason). It is the fact that he gets away with MURDER on the court, travels and gets an and-1, then the opposing team gets hosed when they do the same thing on the other side. In any Wiz/Cavs game Caron, AJ, or Gibby will get hacked to pieces in the 4th quarter with nary a whistle, but Lebron travels all the time when he drives, gets hit, and it counts. If the refs called it the same then I would not have a problem, but anyone who watched the debacle that was the Christmas game or any of the Wiz/Cavs playoff series’ and then gets all bitchy about how Lebron does not travel that much (AllenP “cough cough”) is full of crap. I HATE Lebron, too many people have anointed him as the NBA’s savior and the dude has yet to pay his dues to the league, he is a cheesy-ass punk and everyone who does not think this is a big deal I cannot wait until the Cavs play your favorite team and beat them on illegit fouls.

    Wiz, keep it up.

    D-Steazy is a prophet!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

LeBron said he watched the play 10 times. I think he has a trouble with numbers and counting generally. THE END.

Did I come off bitchy? Pardon little old me.
But, like I said earlier, you can’t complain about some non-calls and not complain about others. If the refs called the game exactly according to the rules, it would be terrible in my mind. That’s not ball.
When you play pickup ball, you let certain things slide. You can’t call travel after you give a guy a forearm shiver that moves his pivot foot, but he doesn’t call for ball. That’s the way the game works. The refs could have called an obvious blocking foul against the Wizards on one of the those game winners, but let it slide. They could have called a pushing foul, but let it slide. Buy you want them to call a travel after Lebron slid his right foot to gather himself and go up strong against David Ruffin. That doesn’t seem just to me.
