Video: Derrick Favors Mix

This All-American will show up any and all comers.

Words by Justin Walsh

Derrick Favors – Naismith Trophy Award Winner as the top boys basketball player in the country. Derrick Favors – Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Georgia. Derrick Favors – 3rd pick in the 2010 Mock Draft by Draft Express.

Derrick is an enigma, wrapped in a codex. He’s been compared to a mix of Chris Bosh and Elton Brand with a dash of Kevin Garnett. He’s bigger than the state of Georgia, his image is blocked by the U.S. Government on Satellite photography, he’s got metal muscle-laden arms a la Jax in Mortal Kombat. OK, maybe that last part was embellished.

All jokes aside, Derrick Favors has the state of Georgia on his back, with the expectations of ACC Freshman of the year stuffed in the pockets of his jeans, the demands of having every NBA scout and ESPN analyst stamping him with a possible No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft next year, effectively assuring that anything less—even if that means just a few slots lower than they project—will be a failure.

Favors doesn’t worry about all that. When asked about the outrageously high expectations, opponents asking for autographs after games and being plastered in more magazines than Octomom, he simply stated, “I’m kind of just used to it now. I treat it as if it’s another part of the game.”

Nights of 38 points and 15 boards are just another part of the game. Boosting rival HS teams’ revenues simply by being on their schedule is just another part of the game. Being the savior of a state’s future in basketball is just another part of the game.

haha you know what’s interesting? Derrick Favors is this huge cat in the game, and it’s got less comments so far than people that nobody has hurt of in comparison to some other vids we’ve done! Derrick gets no looove.

I got love for derrick but let’s see how he does in college next year. He is probably the only player I haven’t seen that much of in the class of 09 and this upcoming class isn’t going to be that raw anyway. but great post justin as always homie.

thanks DP. And I probably need to see more of him as well, but he looks like he could really be like Al Jefferson with more everything. SCARY.

  • Nate James

yeah, im kinda iffy on him. he looks beastly playing against nobody.
in my mind he is the next oden.

Nate where does Oden come in? Derrick has a MUCH more advanced offensive skill set and doesn’t have an injury issue. He also doesn’t look older than moses

Of course he’s dominating-he’s 6’9″ and 220 playing against kids much smaller most of the time. C’mon…you didn’t really compare him to KG did you..? All the dunks in that clip were wide open jams. The blocked shots were impressive, oh yeah, but he’s 6’9″, young and strong-he should be dunking those uncontested ones. I think people just don’t get as hyped for HS’ers as it’s just too soon. People like ‘Bron and KG are once, twice in a 25 or 30 year span if you’re lucky. Good story, but hold off on this Oden, KG stuff until he has some real comp.

Kobe- Every time he’s played against elite talent he has dominated. How about 38 and 15 against Demarcus Cousins, the number 2 player in the country & a recent signee of Memphis. 38 and 15? That’s against a 6’11 post man ranked just as high as he is. I’m not saying he WILL BE KG. I am saying that at the SAME stage in their HS careers, they had similar skill sets. Kobe, you’re an opinion I respect without a doubt, but realize the players he’s playing against EVEN in the clips. In the clip with the black and green jerseys, he’s playing Jrue Holidays team. In the night game outside, that’s the elite24 game against the BEST players in the country. Alumni to the Elite 24 include Michael Beasley, Jerryd Bayless, Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans, Lance Stephenson, and countless others that I’m too lazy to type. The third was at a highly respected AAU tournament. Just letting you know, he plays just as well against top competition.

Walshy-good points. I jumped the gun a bit without knowing too much about him-my thoughts were based on the clips. I know you are thorough with your HS hoops so I respect that. Thx.
