Video: Steve Francis – Aptitude for Altitude

Breathe in. Breathe out.

I learned the word “aptitude” thanks to Steve Francis. I pulled this card (mine actually was a Refractor) from a fresh Topps Chrome pack at my local sports card shop. Understand, Y2K was a much different era. Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady memorabilia was hott! Kobe and Iverson were always nice pulls at the card shop. But Steve Francis… He was the dude you wanted to gamble with. His was the rookie card people feigned for. Needless to say, this Steve Francis insert wouldn’t make the showcase, but it was definitely a good addition to the collection.

It’s been a while since I’ve dug-up the card but, to this day, every time I think of the word “aptitude,” I think of a player who had it in droves. Dude literally had everything at his fingertips. And it’s high time someone made a high-quality retro mix to show why, for minute, Stevie Franchise was the most exciting point guard in the game.

    What happened to Francis?

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

    Is he still alive?

  • thesubwayconnection

I can’t even remember what happened to him. I know the Knicks’ll kill somebody, but really?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

He got traded to and then cut by the Grizzlies earlier this season, and he’s is now retired. Dude used to be one of the most entertaining players in the L though, and definitely an all time dunking PG.

  • Bear

Apparently he got waived by memphis earlier this year…then disappeared

Man, the basketball card game used to be FIRE. That isht was like crack to me when I was a kid.

  • Bear

    okay…i posted that a little late…my bad

  • http://www.okayplayer.com doyouwantmore

Yeah but was it injuries or just his bad attitude that slowed him down so fast. I’ll never forget the look on his face when he got drafted to Vancouver. Way to go, superstar.

  • lawlow

    i miss the vancouver grizzlies

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

I still buy cards now and then. It’s not the same when every card as game-used sh*t on them, though.

  • john

    did he die lol.

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

I stopped liking the Rockets the instant they traded him.

  • Samcobillibob

    The NBA, where amazing happened.

I believe I had that card. I remember back in the day, every Saturday me and my brother would go buy basketball cards and without fail he would always have a Jordan card in his pack. I switched with him thinking I would get a Jordan card and of course, the pack that I originally had was the one with Jordan. Good times.

man, everyone knows you’re not supposed to peel the cover off a refractor

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

cant believe its been that long since him and yao were a pretty good one-two. is there another player who faded away from the highlights faster than he did?

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

None come to mind…All I remember was him being really good/fun to watch then before I knew it I didn’t even know he existed any more.

  • Lz – Cphfinest 3

    Stevie Munsoned his career completely.

  • http://blogs.myspace.com/originadro Witness

he used to avrage like 4 turnovers per game though. he wasnt a true point guard.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Cuttino Mobley still beats his meat to this video

  • Dionisio

I will forever dislike Steve Francis for crying his way out of Vancouver.

  • Dave

    Who faded faster?
    Miner is finer, baby.

  • mattyp32

    hahahaha @ BETCATS

  • Onions Baby Onions

if anyone remembers those old “ankle breakers” dvds the nba used to put out, Franchise had an ill spot in one of them…def one of the coolest pgs to play in the last 20+ years.

  • mattyp32
  • http://trulyhoops.blogspot.com Collin

one of my all time favorite players, I miss havin him on the court.

  • alexcee

“I will forever dislike Steve Francis for crying his way out of Vancouver.”

Sadly, this is my most vivid memory of him. When he arrived, I stopped being a Rockets fan.

remember his SLAM cover with Yao?
dude fell off the face of the earth when him and mobley got separated.

  • Mark Z

“Stevie Franchise!” That tag didn’t last long. Ego & injuries cut his career short.

  • Kas

love him. away from jordan my favourite player ever

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

He cried to get away from Vancouver, and he was so wrong to do that, I mean look how many playoff series they’ve won since then.

whats sadder, steve francis or penny hardaway?

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

mmmmm, cosign Gerard, but it’s a close one.

  • http://effyou@heythere.com Allenp

The only player to fall off athletically faster than Steve Francis was Brent Barry.

  • http://effyou@heythere.com Allenp

And I believe the author was looking for the word “fiend.” “Feign” means to pretend, while “fiend” means to desire intensely, like a dope fiend.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

Penny, without a doubt. dude was all-nba FIRST team. he dominated the PG position when he was playing in Orlando. there was talk about Shaq not being as great as he was hyped to be because Penny was playing with him.

  • AlbertBarr

albie, it was totally when he and Mobley got separated that he cracked, I really wish the Rockets had never traded him…I’m sure they sorta wish that to(*cough TMAC is a choke artist cough*).

  • http://www.slamonline.com Tanny`

I remember the SLAM double-cover with T-Mac in a Rockets uniform and Franchise in a Magic uniform after the trade. That’s when it all went downhill for both of them, especially Francis, which is syaing a hell of a lot.

  • http://www.twitter.com/jamesgoesham JamesgoesHam

i think francis’s career is sadder than hardaway. hardaway at least experienced success in his career by making it to the Finals. and we all know francis has never even gotten close to the second round of the playoffs

  • Bobby

Stevie was always one of my faves. I miss those old Rockets unis. The ones they have now are pure trash.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    actually allenp…
you’ve described ‘fiend’ as being an emotion (to desire intensely), whereas the PERSON with that desire to pursue dope (as per your example)would be the “fiend”.
Thats your lesson for today, go practice.

  • bendreizehn

Are the Knicks still payin him???

  • http://www.ericgordon.com nate the great

steve francis is still one of my favorite players. Kid just kept me wanting more. everything he did amazed me.
like when he dribbled full court in 8 dribbles. lol.
i use him on 2k9 simply because when he is on a break away, he will pull off a 360 over anyone.
    r.i.p. francis.
