Video: Big Baby Saves the Celtics

by Marcel Mutoni

The Boston Celtics were staring down the prospect of a daunting 3-1 hole against the young, and hungry Orlando Magic last night. Thanks to Glen “Big Baby” Davis, though, the series is headed back to Boston all knotted up.

Davis hit a bunch of big shots in the second half for his team, none certainly bigger than his last of the evening:

    Loved this.

  • Dionisio

Did you see when he pushed that kid? Only reason I liked it; it was hilarious.

  • Krishan

Haha dionisio. I was hoping they’d call a flagrant for that.

  • riggs

that kid almost fell over haha

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

Dionisio: hahahaha that was great. Also great to see Doc Rivers going mad. And Bill Russell also being very excited, awesome.

  • Krishan

And 27th sec, check it: now I know while the Lakers have been floundering lately–their freakin head coach is a double-agent!!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

He pushed the ref, the kid, and shook off some of the coaching staff as well.
Great shot though. Doc looked a *little* happy. Dwight.. not so no much.
PS- his photo is gawky as all hell.

  • Krishan

  • Krishan

    also, “their”=”they’re”

  • Krishan

Lol wait that’s wrong. Ah F*ck it, LA sucks

  • Dionisio

He does look like him Krishan, hah. I don’t think Dwight appreciated when he went into the stands. Big Baby forgot he wasn’t in Boston.

  • MKP

Someone explain to me what is “Celtic’s”

  • Russ

Guess I wasn’t the only one who noticed him pushing that kid. Kept waiting for an announcer to say something about it!

  • riggs

dwight was saying that to perk cause perkins was the only dumb*ss to talk sh*t to the magic, stay classy kendrick.

  • Clockwork

can’t stand that fat bastard, he’s got a good shot though.

  • mj23

Neither of these teams has a shot against the Cavs. That was terrible defense by Orlando on the shot by Davis. As great had he is on offense, Rashard Lewis stinks on defense. He didn’t really challenge Big Baby on that last shot, and let him have a clean look.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

mj23: Shard pretty clearly got caught on the switch and hesitated for at least a half-second thinking about sticking with Pierce, who had the ball with less than three seconds left and is only one of the most clutch shooters in the League. He didn’t make the play, but it’s not like he wasn’t trying.
Sure hope you’re right about the Cavs, though!

  • ber

The kid’s reaction to getting hit was hilarious. He’s like, “Did that just happen? Is this real life?”

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Gotta love Doc Rivers punching the air in absolute delight after that buzzer beater. His face said it all, “take THAT, biatches!!”

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Was that really Russell? I kept rewinding that part, but dude looked younger than Bill. Ah well, great way to beat a team. Big Baby fat? yeah, eat this!

  • vtrobot

during the game i was thinking about what a solid playoffs he’s been having. he’s been solid since coming into the league. he’s definitely improved even more now that he has that jumper. pound for pound, he’s probably the quickest player in the league. that infant is surprisingly athletic and agile. are we going 7 again? c’mon man. if we do, i think we get swept by lebron because everyone will be too hurt/tired/old by that point.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

I also thought i was the only one who noticed the kid. Big Baby has to be the closest thing to a regular guy in the NBA. If i hit that shot, i would’ve reacted the same way. And its amazing how after a Championship already, Doc can still get this excited. Gotta luv dem C’s

  • http://www.pkone.com PK

The Phil Jackson doppleganger was Mike Gorman, one of the Celtics broadcast announcers. And yes, that was definitely Bill Russell!

  • mj23

The magic are chokers, and their coach is the master of panic as SHAQ had stated. Orlando is much more talented but so far the Celtics have shown more heart.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Perk aggravated his shoulder apparently. Wow, how much more can this team endure?

  • http://hoops4life.com overtime

Three great things about the video, most of you have picked up on at least two: 1. Nearly knocking out the kid. 2. Bill Russell, or his look-a-like slapping Davis on the back. 3. The surprise in Marv’s voice as he says ”Davis with the shot”

  • Kas

@vtrobot: I dont think aging two weeks will bother any of the celtics, but yes, if it goes to 7 whoever wins will have a tough time against the cavs

  • Mooch

that’s not Bill Russell. that said, it was a great shot. how much money has big baby made himself in the playoffs? someone’s going to give him a ridiculous/stupid contract.

  • cdef28

Davis has improved his jumper a lot since last year. The Magic have got to stop giving him that jump shot cause he will make it at a high percentage. Stan Van is a master of panic. Why in the hell does he not draw up more plays to get Howard the damn ball?

  • underdog

I haven’t saw this coming when they drafted this guy. Baby FTW!

  • vmcb

This shot was awesome, made even more awesome by the fact that Davis shoved that kid out of the way. JESkeets posted a .gif about it on twitter if anybody is interested.

  • http://dillanleuyahoo.com Holy Baller

@ cdef28: Did you watch the game? Every time they gave Howard the ball in the 4th quarter, he threw up that damn ugly sweeping hook and badly missed them all. I certainly wouldn’t run plays for that.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Yeah, I loved how he swept that kid out of the way, and Doc’s celebrations after game winners are awesome. Dude is intense and completely in the moment. Are the Celtics actually becoming likeable?

  • Jordan

That HAS to Bill Russell. My reasoning being the fact that Big Baby went over to him first and because he was 6’8″+.

I also have this to say to the tubby kid who almost got knocked down.. Uh, don’t stand on the court next time.

  • Jordan

Ahhhh, I just re-watched it and NO, it isn’t Bill Russell.. Maybe it’s Davis’ dad? He went over and hugged him, though, you can see the other guys arms extend in a hug as he goes around the railing.

  • cdef28

Holy Baller by every time do you mean twice? Maybe you are right though. They still need to get the ball away from Hedo. The guy is pathetic when he has to do a lot of dribbling.

  • http://effyou@heythere.com Allenp

I love how he crushed that kid on the sideline. He didn’t even look apologetic about it. Celtics and Mavs have more fun than any other teams in the league.

  • http://effyou@heythere.com Allenp

That was a clutch shot man. And the happiness they had for that shot was just crazy.

  • kauhl

I second Holy Baller 1:03 pm.
Howard’s post up game is still lame after all these years… Something is wrong with the guy. Maybe Ben Wallace could teach him a few moves.

  • cdef28

And I agree. But that doesn’t mean Hedo should have the ball all the time.

  • D12FSU

does everyone not realize its still 2-2? The magic just need to win game 5, which they can (best road team). Also courtney lee will be starting again….and hopefully Rafer Alston will make a jump shot. AND, i really doubt the magic will shoot 5-27 on three’s ever again

  • Trevor

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

after watching this, all i got to say is: Ew.

  • adbphilly

At least the kid can go into school today and say he got knocked over by big baby. not too many other kids can say that.

  • adbphilly

Im sorry looking at that again, the kid can say he got a backhand slap on the back of his head by big baby. Oh and his hat knocked off. Classic moment right there

  • http://www.ballislife.com/ Moose

I was like “What???” when this happened. Dude.

  • Texas

What? They’re still 2-2. The celtics didnt win the eastern conference title?

  • rob

  • Teddy-the-Bear

LFMAO @ adbphilly’s interpretation. Hahaha that is a classic moment! That should be on the next NBA commercial. Have everybody in the frame black and white after Big Baby hits the shot, except him and the kid he pushes.

  • Harlem_World

Say whatever you will about the Celtics, but one thing is for sure, they have been the most entertaining team in the playoffs this year. If this goes 7, don’t be surprised if the C’s win. All they have to do is keep the games close and they know they can close better than the Magic. SVG has quickly become the most annoying coach in the league. Players don’t look like they enjoy playing for him at all, with all his emotions on the sideline. COACH THE GAME. You’re not a fan Stan.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    Big Baby’s Gravy.

  • stryfee

i remember seeing that live and when he pushed that kid i was laughing my ass off

  • http://lamarcusaldridge.com Dean Tharp

Big Baby is one of my favorite players. I love when he pushes that little kid

  • http://www.broy7.com nate the great

i cant believe he made that shot!
    can anyone say… insane?
haha i wish i was that kid tho, im not going to lie.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Funny moment: Orlando Sentinel is reporting the Kid’s dad demanding an apology from Big Baby or the C’s: for behaving like “a raging animal with no regard for the fan’s safety”. (Thanks to Sportsguy for that link). Exaggerate much?

  • Travian

  • http://myspace.com/2grownup2beshownup Jack

    That ain’t Bill Russell.

  • serevei

love the way how he pushes the kid outta the way

  • http://www.basketballjerseyworld.com nba-jersey-king

and the boy that got pushed is now seeking an apology, well the Dad is asking the league for an apology

  • ClydeSays

    Go, Big Baby!

The guy in the background is probably Lionel Collins. He’s the LSU Hall of Fame & the 1st black man to play at that university.

ESPN did a story on BBD. Collins was a father figure & mentor to Davis.

  • Gloria Ortiz

BIG FAT LARD BABY slammed a kid after the last shot. Shame on him. If my kid was the one pushed, I would pushed back.

  • BostonBaller

Darksaber, i saw that on the news that the kids dad did say those things but later spoke to a Florida paper and eased off of his initial claims. He probably called a lawyer and tried to get a case and no one would touch it. lol.

#1 R Lewis played good recover defense but the shot was up already. #2 The kid didn’t get hit that hard so he pops should never have said anything # 3 Davis did apologize.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I’d feel like a huge puss if my Dad was aksing for an apology for me getting touched by an NBA player. 14 year old kids who get to be ball boys are usually spoiled little brats anyway, so I guess I’m not surprised.

  • Joey Jo Jo

All I know is the kid’s not sitting courtside anymore. And the dad demands an apology?! Boo frickin hoo!

  • Will Lee

court side seats owners are always too civilized. Big Baby can’t say screw it, but we’ll say it for you. Keep your ass down, white boy.
