Video: How is This a Tech on Dwight Howard?

by Marcel Mutoni

There’s not much to be upset about if you’re an Orlando Magic fan this morning. Your team is on the verge of completing a big upset, and a single victory away from a trip to the NBA Finals.

There is, however, one tiny issue: If Dwight Howard gets one more technical foul in these here Playoffs, he’ll have to sit out a game.

He was assessed with one in the third quarter last night, and the vast majority of the hoops viewing public is still trying to figure out exactly what he did to deserve it:

Welcome to the new NBA, where no show of emotion is allowed…ever.

Answer: It’s not. They better rescind this one…

  • kwame Posted: May.27 at 10:03 am
how badly do the refs want a Lakers-Cavs final

  • Moose Posted: May.27 at 10:05 am
This is coming from a Celtics’ fan’s mouth (or fingers): If this is a technical foul, why doesn’t Garnett get T’d up three times a game?

  • Freedom Fries Posted: May.27 at 10:06 am
    Countdown to T number 7 - - - tick tock - - - tick tock

  • ciolkstar Posted: May.27 at 10:10 am
I think they’ll rescind it, but I can almost understand how they called it. Varejao was sort of on the ground, tring to get up and Dwight turned and shouted in his direction after getting the and 1. I don’t think he said anything directly to Varejao but it sorta loked like he might have. I still don’t agree with that as a tech, but all of this is really only a problem because of the foolish and arbitrary 7-Tech suspension.

    NBA… REVIEW… ASAP.
(especially after the announcer (JVG?) made the comment about the L recinding Mamba’s T earlier)

  • Babygab Posted: May.27 at 10:14 am
Hit by a tech for showing a little emotion ? Come on !!! For real this is bullsh@#!t

  • neaorin Posted: May.27 at 10:15 am
for Orlando’s sake I hope the league has a better replay available than that one, otherwise they won’t be able to get anything conclusive and will stick to the call on the floor.

  • The Wize Posted: May.27 at 10:18 am
A huge walk, yes, technical?! No chance.

  • Eboy Posted: May.27 at 10:20 am
    Nah.

  • Laumol Posted: May.27 at 10:23 am
    Lame officiating

  • Oli Posted: May.27 at 10:25 am
my question is: how is that NOT a flagrant foul?
he’s grabbing him from behind with both hands! plus, i didn’t see him go for the ball, did you?
yes, he still somehow made the basket, but only because he’s superman!

  • Emmanuel Posted: May.27 at 10:33 am
good point. varajao aka the worst player in the nba is dry humping dwight on the way to the basket. there was no intent on going for the ball..that should be a falgrant just because varajao deserves it. lol. for real though, this one should get taken back.

  • mj23 Posted: May.27 at 10:40 am
I miss the NBA of the 90’s where players screamed after a dunk. I remember LJ, Sprewell, Jordan, and Kemp doing it all the time. I remember this one dunk where Kemp posterized Alton Lister and pointed at him. Dikembe would wag his finger after a block. The NBA is becoming like the NFL(No Fun League).

  • Syk Posted: May.27 at 10:46 am
that was a horrible call. the league definately should recind it.

  • Jacob J Posted: May.27 at 10:47 am
mj23 thats true because even five years ago when Detroit was winning it all you could play hard deffense and not worry about getting a tech, and the league is wondering why they are losing money.Dwight Howard probably had an adrenaline rush and felt like letting it all out.

  • nate the great Posted: May.27 at 10:47 am
WHAT THE H3LL IS THE NBA TURNING TOO?
seriously… what did dwight do? nothing. he was simply yelling because he schooled a.v. and still made the shot while a.v. was all over him.
    fu(k! who wouldnt yell? honestly.
    -
Lets make a petition to fire David Stern for simply ruining the only good sport at this point in time.

  • Freedom Fries Posted: May.27 at 10:48 am
    amen to that mj23

  • [...] Slam Online puts it, “welcome to the new NBA, where no show of emotion is [...]

  • Jacob J Posted: May.27 at 10:49 am
    Or a flagrant.

  • Z Posted: May.27 at 10:49 am
The techs are out of control. How do they expect players to refrain from showing any exuberance AS SOON AS the play is dead? It’s the playoffs, for god’s sake. IMO, there should never be any T’s unless you hit a guy or use VERY STRONG language (it would almost have to be discriminatory). Let ‘em growl, stare, drop f bombs, whatever. As long as nobody is touching nobody, it should be all good.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.27 at 10:54 am
There’s also the fact that Patrick got an additional tech because Dwight got HIS tech, and the Cavs got two free points, and—hey, whaddya know, the game ended up tied at the end of regulation again.

  • Marius Posted: May.27 at 10:55 am
Was a flagrant foul called on varejao? that’s the only foul that should have been called in that situation ^^

  • Freedom Fries Posted: May.27 at 10:57 am
Z – if that’s the case, KG should have got a year supply of T’s when he was in street clothes on the bench. I never seen anything so funny than the cameras *dying* to show his reactions to EVERYTHING and in SLOW-MO – SLOW-MF was more like it.

  • Casey Posted: May.27 at 11:01 am
Wow. It’s almost like the L is starting to think like a corporation. They want all their employees to be good little worker drones and show no emotion. Oh wait. That IS what’s happened. Dang. Sorry boys. We know you didn’t really wanna work in Corporate America, but…welcome. (we feel your pain)

  • Cizzo Posted: May.27 at 11:01 am
Lebron can’t do no wrong except get put out of the playoffs!

  • ron Posted: May.27 at 11:04 am
Dwight got a T probably because he yelled too loud, creating nosie amounting roughly 96dB which might cause damage to the refs’ eardrums…

  • Tzvi Twersky Posted: May.27 at 11:05 am
If bron did that it would have gotten its own commercial.

  • dutch Rob Posted: May.27 at 11:07 am
Co Sign MJ23 i miss it to. The League is being ruined by this kind of officiating

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: May.27 at 11:07 am
If Dwight gets t’ed up in Cleveland and Cavs win at home, they will win in Orlando and have a fair shot of getting to the Finals. The refs know exactly what they are doing. Varejao is funny though. How is he going to man-hug Dwight like that and still fall after holding him for dear life? He flopped after he fouled him. WOW

  • rikson Posted: May.27 at 11:11 am
This is NOT a flagrant foul and NO tech. Thats just Playoff-Basketball… This ref-issue is really getting annoying, as it got to the point where it vastly changes the outcome of a game!!! And the Basketballfan suffers…

  • BETCATS Posted: May.27 at 11:14 am
    con-spir-a-cy

  • phil Posted: May.27 at 11:15 am
No tech. The NBA is a giant joke.

  • riggs Posted: May.27 at 11:18 am
dwight yelled AND ONE towards no one in particular, he was turning around which makes it look like it was towards verajao, stupid call by the refs as that hardly merits a tech.

  • tenorca Posted: May.27 at 11:20 am
No tech. And to those shouting flagrant: shut that noise off too. On monstrous manchildren like Shaq and LeBron and Dwight, you have to tie them up to prevent the and-one. Of course, it didn’t work here, but it’s the right play. Dwight was obviously giddy he broke out of the bear hug and scored. Simple and-one.

  • stryfee Posted: May.27 at 11:23 am
wtf was that? Im a Cavs fan but that wasn’t a tech

  • larrylegend Posted: May.27 at 11:24 am
    lol…obvious flagrant by andy!

  • larrylegend Posted: May.27 at 11:25 am
nba forgot about his mission: it’s entertainig 1st, sports 2nd.

  • tenorca Posted: May.27 at 11:25 am
Everyone claiming “obvious flagrant” can no long whine about the game being called too tight. Flagrant require some sort of violent, non-basketball play, not a failed hug.

  • JoeMaMa Posted: May.27 at 11:29 am
somewhere, Tim Donaghy is laughing. And walking gingerly from the shower.

  • wayno Posted: May.27 at 11:38 am
All fans got a tech after that for yelling in the general direction of AV…

  • dma Posted: May.27 at 11:40 am
if anything, an intentional/flagrant foul should have been called. Bob made no play on the ball.

  • Spaceship Jay Posted: May.27 at 11:54 am
It IS a tech on Dwight because if LeBron doesn’t make the finals and get this “Ambassador of the NBA” thing rolling soon, Stern-Bot is gonna have to make the refs perform BLATANT one-sided officiating. Like letting players COMPLETLEY CHANGE the Rulles of a jump-ball. Or letting a player hit another player hit another player in the back with the ball, and have the refs not SAY SH!T. Or….Or… Wait a minute….

  • boogster Posted: May.27 at 11:54 am
this series have really been an eye opener (officiating wise) for me i wonder how could this possible, that the refs are ruining the game instead of REFEREEING. (shake my head in disbelief or amusement i don`t know)

  • Spaceship Jay Posted: May.27 at 11:55 am
    rules*

  • boogster Posted: May.27 at 11:58 am
i live in ireland where people breath in football (soccer to you, american friends)and watching a basketball game is a kind of challenge here. and that makes the poor officiating even more hair pulling..

  • Tommy Patron Posted: May.27 at 11:58 am
Being able to rescind technical fouls is ridiculous. The NBA is manipulating the count to keep Kobe and Da-White on the court. I can see modifying the flagrant calls with replay, but T’s? Why have refs at all?

  • Dean Tharp Posted: May.27 at 12:13 pm
thats the dumbest sh!t i’ve ever seen.
Kevin Garnett does that three or four times a game.

  • overtime Posted: May.27 at 12:15 pm
It isn’t a tech. And if I had my way, wouldn’t be a flagrant either…but if we’re judging fouls the same way we have throught the playoffs…then it is a flagrant.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: May.27 at 12:33 pm
    ARE YOU SERIOUS?

  • DDB Posted: May.27 at 12:52 pm
This series is hilarious. Stern has these guys trying real hard to bring the Cavs to the Finals and it just isn’t working. Doug Collins is even better. He is just a “yes” man for the league. Every time that there is a blatantly awful call, he tries to spin it. We don’t believe you Doug!

  • youngmuggsy Posted: May.27 at 12:52 pm
Tommy’s right being able to rescind technical fouls is ridiculous, nobody ever makes mistakes in the heat of the moment and referees are spot on 100% of the time.

  • Mo Charlo Posted: May.27 at 12:54 pm
It was a T because he didn’t dunk it. Fans don’t tune in to see layups, Dwight!

  • Z Posted: May.27 at 12:54 pm
Guys, are you serious? Kobe get T’d up all the time and we’d all agree that the NBA wouldn’t be mad if the Lakers made it to the finals! That tech was bogus and so were most of the techs in the playoffs.

  • Jeronimo Posted: May.27 at 1:06 pm
@ Mo Charlo: LOL. As for the question itself, unless Dwight was saying a string of expleitives to the ref, the fans, the press AND David Stern, I just can’t see how this is a tech.

  • S. Trotter Posted: May.27 at 1:08 pm
I’m not a conspiracy theorist at all. I believe that refs are being brow beaten after games so badly by the higher ups they are making bad decsions. This Technical though, throws all my beliefs out the window. What is going on?

  • nick Posted: May.27 at 1:24 pm
Not a tech, at all. However, Dwight had about 4 pivot feet at the outset of the drive.

  • Jukai Posted: May.27 at 1:35 pm
Honestly, this isn’t that surprising. Remember when Pippen dunked over Ewing in ‘94 and walked over him and said something like “NOW WHAT F—-” and was called for a technical?
Well, with the p*ssification of the NBA, isn’t this equivalent?

  • Duval Spit Posted: May.27 at 1:43 pm
    No tech, no flagrant.
Dwight was turning around cause he was close to doing a backbend just to see if the shot dropped.
As for Andy, I don’t believe that a solid wrap-up/pull down should be a flagrant. He didn’t take a hard swipe, and he didn’t try to go for Dwight’s head. Clean shoulder shot that more people need to do to stop ANY offensive player as dominant in the pain as Dwight or Bron.

  • KickFreak Posted: May.27 at 1:46 pm
    At kwame.
obviously not bad at all. If they wanted a lakers cavs final why do the lakers and cavs get the shaft of all the bad calls. Do you not see all of dwight howards dirty plays in game 4. not that he was trying to be dirty but he needs to clean it up a bit. as far as his tech…not a tech in my mind but he should have picked on up anyways. and get dantay jones off kobe. in all honesty thats gotta stop or kobe is going to end up injured. all respect to kobe for the way he handled that situation in the interveiw when asked if dantay jones was dirty.

  • KickFreak Posted: May.27 at 1:46 pm

  • Josh D Posted: May.27 at 1:48 pm
Varejao pulled him to the ground,he hardly tuanted him anyway, unless the league saying that the players keep the same face all game, i think the NBA series rigging has began, the league call a technical on Dwight in the next game, and all the Cavs have to do is win at home, and then go to Orlando to face a Supermanless Magic, then, if they win the series is back under their control for Game 7, and the NBA gets their Kobe v LeBron finals

  • Joey E. Posted: May.27 at 1:51 pm
Chauncey, JR, Melo, Kenyon, Birdman do a lot worse. this is BS

  • Jeff Fox Posted: May.27 at 1:52 pm
The NBA is just following in the NFL’s footsteps. No emotion allowed.

  • JAMS Posted: May.27 at 2:29 pm

that wasn’t a travel, two steps legit

  • speedy Posted: May.27 at 2:44 pm
By far the worst call of a technichal this year.
It’s a joke and the referee is stupid .

  • Shine Posted: May.27 at 2:45 pm
David Stern and every ref needs to catch the swine flu and die.

  • what Posted: May.27 at 5:52 pm
    The tech was rescinded.

  • RV Posted: May.27 at 6:00 pm
Ok, do fans forget refs aren’t machines equipped with an automatic replay function!??! We can look at the replay now and say WTF, but the refs don’t have that luxury, throw away the conspiracy theories and the ref hate in this case….why? Because if you look st the LIVE action replay, like the refs did, and not the SLOW motion replay, which the refs didnt have, you can see Varejo’s arm is still tangled up with Dwight after the play, when Howard celebrate by punching the air, it looks like he really was trying to thor wVarejo’s arm away…..if the ref had a weird angle thenit probably looked even more like it…the NBa will probably just take it away, sucks that it happened, but blame the league for not using replay more.

  • omg Posted: May.27 at 6:13 pm
man, all these techs for celebrations, i hope the nba doesn’t go all strict like the nfl and take the fun out of the game.

  • nate the great Posted: May.27 at 6:13 pm
HAHA what i love tho, is that the nba is basicly lebron, and kobe. they basicly are doing everything they can to get those 2 in the nba finals.
and lebron and kobe are like GOD to everyone (besides me) but they cant even make it to the finals (yet, we dont kno)
haha i cant wait for them to get an early vacation.
    lakers and cavs SUCK!!

  • finest hour Posted: May.27 at 6:21 pm
i had some doubt befour but now i know
    the refs smoke it up.

  • bbaby Posted: May.27 at 6:46 pm
The officiating all playoffs long has been ridiculous. They should have put Joey Crawford and Bennett Salvatore in those muppets commercials.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.27 at 6:54 pm
    Statler and Waldorf?

  • The Truth Posted: May.27 at 7:11 pm
I really think the refs shoulda let this one go, but I think Superman wouldnt of got T’ed up if he hadnt looked down at Anderson Varejo and gave him that yelled. I tihnk if he had just done this without looking down at Varejo it wouldnt have been a technical foul. It was called for taunting Varejo not for the show of emotion in my opinion.

  • JE Posted: May.27 at 8:01 pm
Technical fouls for any kind of taunting do nothing but take away from the game itself. Do away with the rule, completely. Michael Jordan wagging his finger at Mutumbo after dunking on him is one of the more famous plays of all time. Last year, Richard Jefferson got t’d up for doing the exact same thing.

  • The Promise Posted: May.27 at 8:07 pm
I agree with JE. Except, dont take them completely away, just dont call em for taunting. I think taunting is good for the game. like JE said, Jordan taunted more than anybody, but yet he didnt get many techs. Just dont be so eager to call them basically.

  • ClydeSays Posted: May.27 at 9:54 pm
Couldn’t believe that call at the time. SternBot needs to check this kind of BS. Personally, I think celebrating after every dunk is dumba$$, but hey, it IS entertainment.

  • Dacre Posted: May.27 at 10:23 pm
Hmmm… with thsi kind of blindmindedness I would be surprised if we see some form of communism get onboard at the team lev……oh wait up.

  • C-Mac Posted: May.27 at 11:22 pm
that is the biggest load of BS i’ve seen in a long time

  • tizzle Posted: May.28 at 12:54 am
NBA cancelled this tech, it wont count towards his playoff total. good move sternbot

  • Jose Posted: May.28 at 2:20 am
At least it got rescinded. How bad was that call?

  • JLP Posted: May.28 at 3:20 am
Even from the Netherlands, it’s visible the NBA wants a Kobe - LeBron final. How can this ever be a technical? And how on earth could anyone explain the huge difference in fouls between the Lakers and Nuggest last night?

  • Yassi Posted: May.28 at 3:42 am
Anyone remember those fun police commercials way back when this league was still great to watch and mostly about sports and real rivalries?
Seems that the L has had way too much fun police around the last 10 years…….this sux…..

  • Jack Posted: May.28 at 4:07 am
NBA, step your game up. Big time. That ish is f*ckin’ pathetic. If you’re gonna call that sort of a tech, then KG would not even be on a team.

  • Rnz Posted: May.28 at 5:48 am
I dont think that the ref intended to blow the whistle..he was just biting on it, and when D12 made the play the ref was so hyped up he said “Whooooooo”, totally forgetting that the whistle was still in his mouth..

  • belloblock Posted: May.28 at 7:25 am
lol howard traveled like a mutha before he drove

  • LeoneL Posted: May.28 at 7:48 am
Hahaha.. good call Rnz! That’s the explanation behind that (now rescinded)tech.

  • flash Posted: May.28 at 11:49 am
    tech my ass david stern!

  • flash Posted: May.28 at 11:54 am
dwight’s gonna get called for another T on game 5! then be suspended for game 6, its all inside david sterns script i saw it!!

  • Allenp Posted: May.28 at 12:51 pm
David Stern is scared of the media and fan reaction to NBA fights.
So, the officials have been asked to make sure fights never, EVER occur.
Medai and fan reaction has driven most of the changes that we hate about the NBA. The ticky tack flagrants and technicals, the removal of hand checking rules, the flopping explosion, all of this can be tied to Stern’s attempts to mitigate negative press.
    Think about it.

  • sam Posted: May.28 at 7:21 pm
this is an example of how awful the nba referees are and dacid stern should review this awful call

  • Shaft Posted: May.28 at 11:45 pm
THE FIX IS IN! Game 5 - Dwight gets a T and gets crucified by the refs the whole game, Cavs win a close win with a lot of dubious freebies. Game 6 - No Howard, Cavs cruise to victory Game 7 - all tied up! This is time for Lebron to shine

  • Matul 9 Posted: May.29 at 4:17 am
aw c’mon…anyone who’s ever played basketball and made a basket after being fouled like that is gonna get excited(and understandably)…he didn’t do anything excessive, what the hell? players can’t show emotion in the NBA nowadays?
seriously, i think this is a weak and dishonorable attempt by the NBA to get a high-rating finals game in the same vein as rondo socking Brad miller on the mouth and getting away with it. the Celtics are out, so the Cavs is the next candidate for finalist in the NBA’s wet-dream NBA finals match-up. and of course foul trouble is Dwight’s most consistent weakness in the series, so that’s the angle they’re using.
