Links: I Have A New Favorite TV Show

Buzzer Beat!

by Lang Whitaker

Our friends at Free Darko found this video and twittered it, and it really is just spectacular on many, many, many levels.

I’m going to be singing this in my head all day.

And I will watch every episode of “Buzzer Beat” from now on.

Even if I don’t speak Japanese.

Enjoy…

Honestly, if this song and characters were Spanish, couldn’t Pretty Ricky be the title character?

  • AlbertBarr Posted: Jul.21 at 3:49 pm
    Whoa…

  • AlbertBarr Posted: Jul.21 at 3:50 pm
Their Jersey’s are definitely better than the OKC Thunder’s…even if they are pink…

  • Miss Tina Posted: Jul.21 at 3:52 pm
omg! this is a japanese tv series thats currently airing, it’s pretty popular at the moment. the main actor is one of my favorites :D soo random that this clip is on slam hahaha

  • data187 Posted: Jul.21 at 4:00 pm
this is better than some of the nba promos i’ve seen in recent years…lol
only if the orlando magic can pass as well as this fictitious japanese bball team.

  • Lang Whitaker Posted: Jul.21 at 4:01 pm
    @AlbertBarr: LOL

  • Lang Whitaker Posted: Jul.21 at 4:03 pm
I wonder if the Japanese Reggie Theus is their coach?

  • Eboy Posted: Jul.21 at 4:12 pm
I’m wondering if an NBA squad could implement that flying V-like formation they run from .10 to .12.

  • Dray Posted: Jul.21 at 4:25 pm
Omg…your basketball itch has gotten so bad, you settled for this??…haha, you need a support group, BA meetings or something hahaha

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Jul.21 at 4:40 pm
there is a reason they call tv shows, “programming”

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Jul.21 at 4:41 pm
even if you hate and never watch crap like the hills, etc. someone else will say something about it, and you go into how stupid it is. they programmed you to talk about it in one way or another. im starting to think lang is a cointelpro agent.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jul.21 at 4:46 pm
that opening riff REALLY reminds of a song by The Ting Tings…. hmmm

  • doyouwantmore Posted: Jul.21 at 4:58 pm
    Japanese Cheerleaders.

  • the big ticket Posted: Jul.21 at 5:28 pm
    whoa those japenese r ballers

  • Boing Dynasty aka Free Lester Hudson Posted: Jul.21 at 5:32 pm
Is that Kevin Martin at the 1:34 mark?

  • Allenp Posted: Jul.21 at 5:38 pm
The evil guy with the headband looks familiar.

  • Babygab Posted: Jul.21 at 5:48 pm
    This is pretty disturbing…

  • Ajo Posted: Jul.21 at 5:49 pm
japanese basketball version of “The Game” lol

  • cp Posted: Jul.21 at 6:18 pm
ok im asian but this looks really stupid. like a bunch of japanese actors trying to look like they can ball

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.21 at 6:27 pm
That’s just embarassing man. It’s like watching ‘Above the Rim’ all over again, except its in Japan, with no guns or drugs, or, well yeh.
    Disturbing to say the least.
Gerard – it does too eh haha. Song is published by ‘Overmillion Records’ if that helps.

  • Remo Williams Posted: Jul.21 at 6:28 pm
I literally JUST got back from japan a little over 24 hours ago. they had ads/pictures of these dudes EVERYWHERE!! i cant read kanji but figured it was a show… didnt figure it would be THIS awesome.

  • j4zzm4n Posted: Jul.21 at 6:51 pm
read the manga called slam dunk totally unrelated but yes it is awesomely brilliant.

  • that dude Posted: Jul.21 at 7:26 pm
“like watching ‘Above the Rim’”????? why? cause it’s about basketball?

  • KobeWearsAPurpleThong Posted: Jul.21 at 7:42 pm
Was that Mark Wahlberg at :25….?

  • Moose Posted: Jul.21 at 8:29 pm
So that’d be the Japanese basketball version of Friday Night Lights? Looks like it.
Haha KWAPT, always looking out for our Boston Boys.
Hursty and Gerard, I agree. Even though I really just can’t stand the Ting Tings at all.

  • Wdavid Posted: Jul.21 at 8:43 pm
At least they got a show about Basketball.

  • nick Posted: Jul.21 at 9:18 pm
This got me thinking: Where’s Yuta Tabuse these days?

  • Z Posted: Jul.21 at 10:33 pm
I love how the dude is screaming like he’s about to dunk when he pulls up for a J.

  • DP Posted: Jul.22 at 12:19 am
sounds like the theme song to my favorite anime show “samurai champloo.” play wit it.

  • Dionisio Posted: Jul.22 at 12:57 am
They have a single black guy in this cast of Japanese actors. How brilliant.

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.22 at 2:03 am
@that dude – Well it’s not about f*king ping pong is it now?

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jul.22 at 2:14 am
^^^ Ping pong is awesome, and Japanese people don’t play it, fool. This show looks horrible though… to say the least.

  • Krishan Posted: Jul.22 at 2:49 am
Ahaha Z beat me to it. Check out that scream at 0.48, that is one hardcore fadeaway J.

  • Randy Brown Posted: Jul.22 at 4:17 am
HAHAHA, that save was amazing, total superhero stuff. I also liked launching the running buzzer-beater, despite only being about 25 feet out. Still looks better than Hang Time

  • Godzilla Posted: Jul.22 at 4:31 am
just got back from tokyo last week…this show (and “Mr. Brain”) is big in japan. Miss Tina: Yamapi is a good actor, have u seen nobuta wo produce? still trippin that this got a link here on SLAM!

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.22 at 4:43 am
Teddy – I could have said golf. Or rugby. Or extreme paintball. Doesn’t matter. How about eating competitions? Oh wait, Kobiyashi quit. They don’t play that either….

  • m Posted: Jul.22 at 6:14 am
there’s a lame chinese version complete with screaming and girls as well
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGB2SKfGVmU KobeWearsAPurpleThon–mark wahlberg!! seriously!!

  • joe Posted: Jul.22 at 6:24 am
    LOL @ Z!!!!

  • Tony Posted: Jul.22 at 6:38 am
It’s just like one tree hill

  • nicol Posted: Jul.22 at 7:13 am
    julie connor will them up!

  • nicol Posted: Jul.22 at 7:14 am
    - will light them up!

  • riggs Posted: Jul.22 at 8:39 am
    HANGTIME!

  • Fat Lever Posted: Jul.22 at 9:04 am
Is that the longest intro for a show ever? It’s no Perfect Strangers intro, but not bad.

  • Jeff Fox Posted: Jul.22 at 9:31 am
Looks like it could be the greatest show of all-time. The theme song is straight out of South Park.

  • brian Posted: Jul.22 at 10:19 am
they should have continoued with the slam dunk anime and the manga

  • iceman_bc Posted: Jul.22 at 10:46 am
this is just a summer jp tv series.
they take the latest sneakers, but their jersey is not so suitable.

  • Blinguo Posted: Jul.22 at 11:02 am
DP likes Champloo? Props. but MINMI show ending and Nujabes beats > this pop princess theme song.

  • Blinguo Posted: Jul.22 at 11:21 am
And Lang’s Braves can stop beating up the Giants now, pushing them out of the wild card.

  • Soundproof Posted: Jul.22 at 1:25 pm
I’d watch it. Jersey’s are way better the OKC no, doubt!

  • phildo Posted: Jul.22 at 2:45 pm
We have to get the Olsen-twins into this…

  • j4zzm4n Posted: Jul.22 at 5:07 pm
i miss slam dunk manga….it obliterates most other shounen jump efforts in terms of characterisation and storyline

  • Sparker Posted: Jul.22 at 6:04 pm
    japanese hoopsters have small balls

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Jul.22 at 8:24 pm
Japanese television is by far the most corny in the world, with Brazilian just edging out American for the runners up position.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jul.22 at 9:56 pm
HBO has the best television EVER, so I don’t see why you think American tv is “corny”.

  • Joel O's Posted: Jul.23 at 1:18 am
Hey Lang! Taiwan did a similar series a few years back called “MVP Valentine”. Yes, there were horrendously cheesy love story elements in it. But the star of the show played on the Taiwanese national squad, and he can definitely ball. This Buzzer Beat looks strangely good, though.

  • badnewzb8ller Posted: Jul.23 at 2:14 am
looks like a remake of master p’s old music vid

  • Dacre Posted: Jul.23 at 4:05 am
    Cheerleader actresses are great.

  • Sesa Posted: Jul.23 at 4:45 am
I remembered reading the manga of buzzer beater. At least y’all know the Slam Dunk’s anime is good

  • Sanger Posted: Jul.23 at 7:55 am
Only problem with the slam dunk anime was it took forever to show one important play…..

  • Zee! Posted: Jul.23 at 12:03 pm
Which episode does the token black guy on the team teach everyone to dunk? And where are the ninjas?

  • RV Posted: Jul.23 at 12:17 pm
interesting opening, funny, but entertaining…, i’d say it’s Hang Time meets One Tree Hill.

  • Roy Posted: Jul.23 at 1:56 pm
I thought it was the live action of the manga/anime series Buzzer Beater by creator of Slam Dunk manga/anime series, but it’s actually a different show altogether. I dig the shiny basketballs, though. :D

  • dcballa Posted: Jul.23 at 3:44 pm
at 1:24 they even got the rodman hustle!

  • Matul The Wolf Posted: Jul.24 at 5:16 am
@ EBoy: the flying v formation, maybe…but the real question is will the NBA coach be able to get the players to do the Sparta battle cry like that too? because obviously it’s essential for the formation!

  • Daniel Posted: Jul.24 at 10:51 am
    @Gerard Himself
The opening riff is straight out of “Take Me Out”…

  • Knock Knock Posted: Jul.24 at 2:38 pm
That looks like the most retarded show i’ve ever seen.
