Exclusive Video: NBA Live 10

This year, it’s really in the game…

by Lang Whitaker

One of my beefs with basketball video games has always been that while the companies get most of it correct, they rarely get all the details right. The tattoos, the shoes, the uniforms…that stuff matters, to me and, I’m sure, to other hoop heads out there, too.

When our friends from EA Sports came by the SLAM Dome recently to show off NBA Live 10, I mentioned my concerns to them before they even fired up the game. Then they pressed play and…well, it was all in there. I mean, everything.

EA sent along this exclusive video for us to share…and finally, it’s in the game.

I stopped buying Live after 06. That game was probably the worst bball game made. 2k keep getting better every year.

I still think 2K is better though.

I wish they’d put some of the stuff which Madden has in NBA Live(i.e create teams, stadiums, and Superstar mode) being British, i didn’t know much about American Football when i bought it, and i found the sport itself kinda woosy(they wear about 12 layers of padding, but if they’re tackled you have to start over again, but in rugby union, no one wheres padding and the game goes on after a tackle, common! That is a bit woosy)Anyway, tha games features were so good that if it was for basketball i know that i’d be hooked for a year until the new version came out, Live lacks certain aspects, like no create teams and All star selections on dynasty(Tim Duncan is hardly ever selected) Personally, i think 2k9 is a little better though that has stuff to be patched up too

Actually looking at those ads the gameplay looks like its nearly there and the graphics are immense, but improvements in the non gampeplay like i’ve just said would b good

  • Josh D

I’ve just looked at 2k10 on their website and their incorparating a My Player mode and the D-League into their latest game

Maybe Live will turn it around now that they have a 2K guy running things. It can’t best 2K this year though. They need to overhaul that entire gameplay engine for Live, not just tweak it. I do hope Live can eventually challenge for the crown though. Competition breeds excellence, right?

And now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to preorder my 2K10 Special Anniversary Edition and wait patiently for 2K10 Combine.

If u guys hated Live SooOO Much, WHY ARE U WATCHIN THIS VIDEO!!?? JUS GO LOOK AT UR 2k VIDS AND LEAVE THE LIVE FANS WATCH THIS ONE, GEEEZ!!!

  • Josh D

I don’t hate Live i just prefer 2k and don’t get me wrong both games look awesome but little stuff like the National teams on Live r a bit inaccurate, only three players on the GB team r actually players who have played for them in the last two summers, the rest r guys who either played in the first summer of GB when they had mostly players from the British League, guys who played for England before the GB team was formed,or guys who r the first people who spring into their minds when they think British Basketball( John Amaechi and Kelenna Azuibuke?)Hell, they can’t even be bothered to call GB instead England

  • Big Lami

2K8 was best NBA game…I wasnt feelin either game in 2009…I am skeptical about Live 2010 and am gambling 2K10 will be King again

  • trick..

I switched from live to 2K last year.. im not going back, 2k just plays better..

  • whooo!

i just had to include this photo – it just shows that 2k includes the same tats & in-game intros, only difference is that’s not the focus of their improvements! i really do think if Live would just start from the ground up, that’d be nice. there’s tech they’ve used, like the way players’ feet realistically move on the ground (after years of ice-skating across the floor), and other unique things they have yet to take advantage of. build a whole new engine with the guy they took from 2k, let him re-build the game and really utilize the good things they have and ignore all the fluff.

also, unlike the random ppl who have started posting just for this video, i’m pretty sure other Slam regulars are only concerned about a good game – REGARDLESS of who makes it. that’s the whole point of competition: to get the best product out. why the hell should we care who makes it? EA nor VC hasn’t done crap for us, aside from taking our money, so i’ll just go with the game that’s the best.

  • BogMog

    2k is mo better

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Co-sign whooo! Good points man.

  • justophat

2K series took over basketball games…. sorry Live, gameplay sucks

  • http://myspace.com/2grownup2beshownup Jack

Still looks like it sucks this year, the start tells it all, jerky gameplay and player movement, and the graphics are NOT as good as 2K’s.

  • Nikezoom12

@stephensonmc I would like to know somethin about the practice facility did u guys renovated and what is the news things in live accademy?

  • http://koffboard.com DrewMoney

stephensonmc you can not try to compare the BS video showing LBJ tossing chalk into the with the Live 10 pre-game. Where the hell is the chalk cloud? The Pic at the top of the page is of the chalk is a straight line and not a plume! Yet you don’t see the difference.

I liked the fact that Live last year had the ability to run plays just about anywhere in the offensive side of the floor. Too bad 2k has not done that. Live’s rebounding and defense has been suspect for years.

The E3 and hustle play vid’s has piqued my interest in Live for this year. NHL raised the bar for hockey. Madden improved this year (cause it ain’t been shyt since 05).

I am going to rent Live and 2K. The demo’s may show something but to drop $60 for crappy unrealistic basketball is not going to work for me.

  • vic21

Does LeBron shakes hands at the end of games on the videogame?

  • jedi420

I think it’s great when developers add all the extras – jerseys, shoes, etc. etc. It seems like a minor detail, but when you play franchises extensively, stuff like this can keep the experience fresh over the long haul..Obviously the gameplay has to be up to snuff though.. I’ll give Live some credit they have come a long way since NBA Live 06, that might have been the worst b-ball game I’ve ever played lol… NBA 2K is a must buy though, they have much smoother gameplay and the animations link together in a seamless fashion that is not seen in NBA Live…. I’ve owned all the Live’s and 2K’s on the Xbox360, and while the gap is closing, the boys at NBA Live have their work cuot out if they wanna surpass 2K.. And all you foam at the mouth fanboys need to realize that the more NBA LIve improves, the better 2K will become, competition is a good thing ya dummies…

making a basketball game is far more complicated then any other sports game. because of all the different plays, rules, body types, moves. the court size. therefore it is impossible to realy make a realistic basketball game.

football is easy, american football is kind of easy, golf haha and hockey is also easier then bball.

I havn’t played live in years and I played 2k a couple of times last season and in terms of realistic gameplay and nuances of the game it was well… not that good

  • sami

dude r u stupid nba live better then 2k in graphics but 2k better in gameplay and broadcasting i think live 10 well be better this year

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Joel O’s, PES has been sh!t since they moved on to next gen and the lack of licences is starting to get embarassing. Fifa ’09 was head and shoulders above PES 09.

  • johnny.5

nba live has and always will be garbage. it doesnt matter that they swooped on one of 2k’s developers and have enough money to spread hype all over slam with producers replying to posts and sh**. stephonsonMC how can you really lie to all these people? we all know you HAVE played 2k and we all know you KNOW 2ks better. but whatever gets you money dog

  • entertheziggy

Live sucks hard core, like the gameplay is so arcadey and the graphics are ok at best, the commentary sucks, i read somewhere on this commentary thread that this live lover was all like 2k got competition this year, notice how this is supposed to be a pro-nba live post but everyone here is like live sucks? wow live doesn’t have competition cuz its not even in the contest you dolt! 2K IS THE SHIZZY!!!

  • lou

Why do both games lack any good post play? Why do we need a primary button to throw an oop? How many oops are thrown in a regular nba game? 3-4 at most why is triangle assigned to that in live? 2K9′s movement was stiff and Live was a lil cartoony. The control changes in live are getting worse. Live 95 is probably the best basketball videogame ever. waitin for the 2k9 demo. Bought live last year because 2k9 dribble moves are terrible. I dont see how people thought 2k9 looked better live was def graphically better, smoother interactions between players and the pick and roll was a great addition, dont have a clue why the tweaked that, it worked perfect. I know this is getting a lil long, I’m critical about basketball video games because i’ve spent more time playing ball than anything else but sleep. I hope they made Dwight Howard have no post moves like he does in real life. And not every player should be able to do the european two step, theres maybe ten players in the league that can do it effectively, they might as well put Lebron’s crab dribble in it. Play the demos and buy whichever feels better.

  • lou

Oh and Live 10 has no stop and pop. I cuts to character animation drifting left or right. U got to come to a complete stop then hit the shoot button. So forget about running to the three point line and pulling up on a dime. However I do like the fact that you can choose the hand You go up with, however I dont think everyone in the nba is that talented with both hands, definetly not Andrew Bynum, or Dwight Howard. I know a key feature was to have teams play like they do in real life, what happens when a team posts up like the Spurs? Don’t mean to harp on it but Live 09 did an injustice by making R3 the post button and the right analog the post move controller. Being able to control team management stuff during freethrows was long overdue. Kudos EA to adding that. Ref animation during the free throws was a bonus too. How bout getting license from the actual NBa refs to be in the game, would add an air of realism. You might have to get replacements for this upcoming year though
