Video: Gilbert Arenas Explosive Dunk

by Ryne Nelson

It was a surprise appearance, but a welcome one this Friday at the Goodman League at Barry Farms Rec Center. Playing with the likes of ‘Dre Iguodala and QRich, Arenas reportedly stood out well above the rest.

In case you haven’t been following Arenas closely this summer, he’s been popping up at Pro Ams and tournaments, getting his run on, and the reports keep getting better. But words are one thing. It’s another to see it for yourself.

Watch ’til around 5:46, to see the New Gilbert. The Explosiveness. The Power. The Agility. It’s all there. So much that you have to wonder whether this truly is the same dude:

Always ready for the latest Arenas scoop, The Post‘s Michael Lee was there:

Arenas had 35 points, mostly on aggressive drives to the basket. He was surprisingly spry and springy, as he effortlessly attacked the rim for dunks. He had two-handed slams. He had a vicious tomahawk slam. He even dunked on someone. When was the last time you recall seeing Arenas dunking?

More impressive, he wasn’t wearing a knee brace or favoring his leg in any way. The explosion wasn’t all the way there, but it was close. After Arenas blew past two defenders to get to the basket and draw a foul, Rawls said, “Gil came out here tonight and I think we can safely say, the knee is fine. Looks like I’m going to have to renew my seats at the Verizon Center.

No knee brace. Attacking the basket. Agent Zero could finally be back next season. Just keep those fingers crossed.

great news, then I can finally wear my Agent Zero jersey without him being injured..

  • ave. joe

That video is very hard to watch. Good for him though. Can’t wait to see the Wizards do something this year.

  • Bryan Crawford

Gilbert Arenas: “The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated!”

  • Clockwork

    Can’t see a damn thing.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

    Some games don’t need announcers.

  • http://www.edthesportsfan.com Ed The Sports Fan

Yeah, their announcers are trash but Gil booming on them boys was nasty…

I couldn’t tell who was who in the vid, but I’m glad to hear Gil is back. He’s one of my favorites, and being from D.C. the Wiz hold a special space in my fan’s heart. I’ll be happy for my man Caron too, cuz it was hard watching him lose. This should be a fun team to watch again.

  • real

im not hating but did he pull himself up on the rim with the other arm a lil bit??

  • drew

well for gil’s sake i hope they dont run into the cavs in the playoffs

  • Christian BulleN

Nothing like an announcer going on about shorts for 2+ minutes, specially without a second of it being funny..

Nice dunk Gil, but it’s a rec league and I’m not entirely convinced.

  • mj23

I think that was James Harden.

  • http://bulls.com airs

didn’t pull up at all. just slapped the backboard.
    he’s back for sure

  • Flash

    OH BABY!

  • http://slamonline.com Niyagirlfresh

I hope he remains healthy this season, I need to see that Washington/Cavs matchup again. Now all I need is for T-Mac to come back strong and I’ll be on cloud 9 all season lol.

  • David Curran

    Nice to see him back

  • http://twitter.com/NotebookNick thesubwayconnection

    Hibachi!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Damn, was that really Arenas?
My goodness. If he’s doing that now, well I”m going to have to eat some crow from next door neighboor who has been hyping Arenas while I doubted.
    That was just viciously unexpected.

5:49 is when the dirt gets done.

  • Babygab

    Hibachi is baaaaack baby !

i’m sure the wizards brass is thrilled that gil is playing outside in a rec league.

    gilberto!

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Ooookay. Some proof to validate all the tweets about him lately. Still a sceptic until he’s consistently driving past league comp.

  • K-Nasty

“First bucket of the ’09 season, after a year layoff.” Haha funny, even though it’s more like two years.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Praise God my favorite player is back. play wit it.

  • Zero

    oh yeah…
    let’s do this

  • luv2ball

Barry Farms is more then a rec league. There is top talent out there every summer. Plus, D.C/Bmore Area has the most NBA players.

    Barry Farms players:

Pops Mensah Bahu,White Chocalate,Baby Shaq, Prime Objective, Dermarr Johnson, Beasley, Durant, Stevie Francis, list goes on an on.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Yeah there’s a nice vid of KD at Barry Farms shooting 3s from basically his side of the court. / Wiz are no more than a 4-5 seed, yeah they have strong perimeter scoring but the interior guys are still soft. No interior D, no rebounds.

  • luke

”Yo he’s back..thats fiddy two wins son #^%&!!”

Yeah it was a nice dunk..but some people just get straight carried away!

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

Agent Zero is back in business… :D

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

“hey gil does flip know you out here?” LMAO!!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    ‘BACHI!

  • http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

    Yes!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Let not count the chickens before they hatch… He and the Wizards top players need to prove they can stay healthy… We all know they can play, they just need to do it..

  • izzo

We always knew he was a really good player….

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Foye should change his number to #48. Because thats how many minutes he will need to play, shall Arenas go back down.

  • jdote

I think people are underrating the additions of Foye and Mike Miller. Foye is a good six man who can give you 20 on any given night, and Mike Miller is just an all around solid basketball player. He can rebound, pass and off course shoot. I also think Brendon Haywood bein healthy, and the Oberto signing, give them solid interior defense. With Flip leading the way, I think they can surprise some people. Maybe even move into the top three of the east..

  • Josh D

    He’s back

  • http://claydefayette@yahoo.com CDef28

It’s good to see Gilbert flying around and more athletic than before, but remember the NBA season is 82 games. He won’t be able to look like this on every night, but if he can stay on the court with some of this it’ll be a good upcoming year for the Wizards.

  • http://www.shoenut.blogspot.com ShoeNut

Man, it seems like forever since we saw Gilbert Arenas ball like he can. It sucks that he is still on the Wizards, but at least he will be able to contribute to some Sports Center highlights next year.

  • lawlow

i hope he starts blogging again too

  • vmcb

I hope Agent Zero really is back. He certainly makes the league more exciting.

  • Captain Jean Luc-Picard

    Joy to da world, sucka

  • ab_40

nice. let’s hope he comes back strong. washington can use him although if he gets beef with flip I can see him getting traded to new york for david lee nate robinson and some other bloated contract to match gilberts.

is he gonna try to score 50 on portland again since that was his promis back then?

  • BostonBaller

I hope he comes back full strength and stays healthy. I hate to se a good to great player go down before they do much in the L.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I’m glad pros still play in these outdoor leagues on the playground. It reminds us that some athletes still play for the love of the game, and for more than just the dough.

  • the saint

yo thts my cousin in law……..he dont be callin tho

  • http://www.redsarmy.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

2 words folks-Pro-Am. No doubt, he got up on that one, but let’s see how he does in the L before declaring him “baaaack!!!!” lol…

  • http://www.redsarmy.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

And don’t get it twisted, I love watching Gil do his thing too, but it’s gonna take alot more than one dunk to convince me..

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    Amen, purplethong. Amen

  • TS

can’t wait for him to be back.. he is a character and entertainment and it would be awesome to see him back out there racking up 30′s again

    @KobeWears…. Awesome name,man.

  • ka

    gotDAMN is right.

  • pennydunk_1

    let’s go gil!

  • big bad boss

hey the silver new balance that a guy was wearing is hot! what model is it?

  • Klong

Gil needs to hit up that Carolina ProAm League where John Wall is playing. Wall’s dunk on Stack tops the ish out of this.

  • diego

thats my homies video here…and I was the guy screaming 52 wins….

being 10 feet away from him and watching the man return “after a 1 year absence” (from the Barry Farms league…not the NBA), it was a great sight to see….

all game he was totally agressive and showed none of the normal charachteristics of someone who’s had a severe knee injury

so yes, I can scream 52 wins…Aim High like the Air Force…

oh and those NB’s are the 498′s

oh and BTW…Miles is the greatest summer league announcer in the United States…get familiar….MOVE EM!

    The Hibachi is heatin’ up…

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I really do hope that he comes back better then ever. However, im not holding my breath. Stay well Gil!

  • Fleezy

    it was a 9 foot rim….

  • Speedy

Yall are tripping. I was at that game and I can tell you the dude is back. I don’t mean that he’s going to be able to do everything like he never left, but he’ll be able to TRY without wincing in pain every two minutes. The dude is looking in great physical shape and doesn’t seem to be favoring his knee at all.

  • MR816

AGENT ZERO IS DEFINITELY BACK!!! HE CAME TO CHICAGO AND DID THE EXACT SAME THING IN THE CHICAGO PRO AM….DRIVING TO THE BASKET, GETTING AND 1′S AND BASICALLY SCORING AT WILL!!!!!

  • trilla mack

4 all those hating on the announcer and calling it a rec league need to do ur homework… da goodman league is one of the top and most respected summer leagues in the country… if ur sum ass u get picked on, if u do well u get respect… jus cause ur not in the league doesnt mean ur not worth playing against… most of those players are street hoop legends, college players, top ranked high school players, or nba stars… Move Em!!!

  • 435Savage

Oh Snap!!!!! Agent Zero Take Over!!!
