Video: LeBron Destroys Rondo’s Layup Attempt

Note to Cavs opponents: It’s still not a good idea to feebly toss up layups when James is lurking:

Uhm….maybe Rondo should have shelved that whackass fake behind the back pass for a second.

  • ClydeSays

Nice block. But what about Mo “All Star” Williams two hacks on Rondo before that play. Shoulda been 2 free throws.

  • Chris

    Poor little b*tch Ronda

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Bron should have just grabbed the ball….And Rondo likes that fake behind the back way too much.

  • james

  • Jarrod

    celtics still won…

  • peter

seriously has Rondo’s fake behind the back ever worked? its not even a good one, a la Jason Williams

    forward to 48 seconds

  • Yesse

    James, where is the foul?

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

That Rondo fake works when it’s plausible that he’ll pass behind the back to a trailer. But the trailer was cut off by Bron, plus he definitely does that fake a bit too often (like you guys noted). Non-credible fake + weak floater = humiliation, in this case. Plus the shot wasn’t even a high percentage one, from the way he was hoisting it up like that.

  • MooButter

Not even close to a foul. Mo takes one swipe at the ball and doesn’t get it. Stop hating and appreciate an amazing block. @AllenP: I thpought the same thing, but he was coming down out of bounds. Better to get the hometown crowd and your teammates fired up with a ferocious block and make a statement.

  • underdog

Damn, LBJ makin’ it look easy.

  • Bruno

a la Jason Williams??? not even close
haven’t seen any videos from J-Will in awhile, but that elbow pass was great

  • underdog

@peter – I almost forget how exciting JWill was in his prime. I hope some game left in his tank.

  • http://www.yahoo.com Logues

    lebron hustled back on D?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Co-sign everybody, Rondo gotta dead that fake pass to no one in sight.

  • andy

agree with what everyone’s saying about the fake behind-the-back. its just a tic now, not even remotely effective. for my money he hasn’t got that creative ‘boogie’ (as the kids don’t say) like JWill, Magic or Pistol Pete had.

  • http://realcavsfans.com Anton

On a different note, the Cavs were turrible against a resting Celtics squad. Gots to get everyone on the same page of Mike Brown’s complex offensive playbook. I’m giving them 15 regular season games to figure it out before I go into a SVG-like panic.

  • Diesel

Has Rondo contacted anyone in the SLAM offices to take down and confiscate all video’s of this block?

  • Diesel

And jarrod…are you bragging about a preseason win?

  • LA Huey

I hope lbj starts balancing when to keep the ball in play and when to go for the crowd pleaser.

  • Rafael

I was at the game and shear velocity of the ball killed someone. Really though, did the ball hit someone?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Anton, Moon kept getting raped off the bounce by Marquis. I was really disappointed in that, everyone keeps saying he’s a lockdown defender. Cats were toying with him from the wing AND the block.

  • thalilbigkahuna

Man, that Jason Williams video is ridiculous. I had only seen him play for the Heat before that, so I have newfound respect for him.

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

co-sign Bruno. that elbow pass was…… wow

  • iamse7en

    Crybaby is an idiot.

Why didn’t he just block it softly, then get the ball for a fast break?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

And that is why LeBron is the 51st best player in the NBA>

  • rinspeed

Has LeBron ever blocked a shot straight up without having to come from behind like a pussy?

  • tavoris

I agree Allenp…throwing it out there doesn’t help the Cavs. Keeping it in play-or blocking it to a teammate-is the correct defensive play.

  • Alvin

rinspeed you have a point but damn!!!! Yall see how quickly Lebron closed in for that block?? That was a lot of hardwood he covered to go get that block.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Yeah! LeBron is a p*ssy, and the way he blocks shots in exhibition games is totally faulty! Great job as always by the razor-sharp slamonline commenting community! I’m so bummed I won’t be around on Friday! Darnnit!

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Some of the hate on LeBron or Kobe is just… bizarre. Bieng called a p-ssy for covering the length of the court to prevent a lay up? Wow.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Thank you random poster for that Jason Williams mix. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  • http://realcavsfans.com Anton

@ Z: yup, plus JJ’s minutes went down as did his rise in previous preseason games. Next week’s opener is looking like an L, unless sh!t gets turned around in the Q.

  • tavoris

Alvin, he did cover almost half the court in 3 steps. That was CRAZY athletic-and a testament to how FAST he is.

  • http://www.jameyburke.blogspot.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

Very impressive block. Who won the game by the way..? And I heard that 3 of the C’s best players didn’t play either? LOL..Enjoy the next 7 months of dunks, blocks and powder being thrown in the air Cavs fans’. Because we all know come spring of 2010 your team will *gag*..*cough*..CHOKE again.

  • peter

The thing about Rondo’s fake is he does it with a full arm extension which doesn’t look like a behind the back pass at all…the cup-wrap-behind-the-back style is much more effective…oh and everyone talking about Lebron should have recovered the ball? That block was disgusting…it looked like it could have deflated the ball. Sometimes you just have to send a message!

  • davidR

uh oh, ryan leaking who’s #2?

  • k3v1n3o5

Nice block, but he should really try to learn how to block a shot while keeping the ball in play like Alonzo Mourning.Other than that, nice block.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Clearly that was a travel on LeBron.

  • Rog123

I didn’t think that is was possible to hate on a terrific hustle play, but I guess it is. That’s just sad

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Am I the only one who thinks that it would be freaking hard to run the length of the floor, jump with your momentum carrying you out of bounds, grab the ball clean and land inbound? Yes? Okay, then.

  • one day

J-Will was just ridiculous with his dimes and handles. I hope that he makes it on top 10 every night and brings back white chocolate while with the Magic.

  • http://twofistedpress.com Pve84

When taking Lebron’s athletic ability into perspective, fast break blocks should be and (as seen from last season) sometimes are routine for him. Considering this, the block is not amazing, but his hustle is what’s admirable.

  • LA Huey

just so i don’t get lumped into the haters, i think the play was great. considering the momentum he was carrying and the fact it was an exhibition game, props to lbj. but sometimes in the half court he’ll make a block off the weak side that he could keep in play. i fully support him launching the ball into the 20th row on those breakaway layups though.

  • Bart

flashy but ineffective, Hakeem would have tapped it and recovered the ball for his team ditto Dikembe its called smart defense the celts probably scored off the inbound

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Joel O’s: He hoisted it up in the air lazily like that because he thought he was going to draw the foul. I know he was barely even touched but that’s probably what he was expecting, with LeBron and co. running at him.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Co-sign Bart.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Rondo’s behind the back fakes are awesome. Am I the only one who thinks this? The guy has basically taken a streetball move that most cats wouldn’t even attempt, and made it his signature fake. It even looks cool when he gets blocked for doing it. And most of the time it works. How awesome is that?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Teddy, how many times have you seen a guy chasing another one on the break and ‘grab’ his lay-up or tapped it to recover it? Not in the halfcourt, but running full speed behind a guy? Exactly.

  • Shem

Are you guys seriously calling LeBron a pussy for blocking shots from behind.. thats stupid he gets the block! Oh and as for Rondo, i love signature and absolutely every player has it its the beauty of basketball but COME ON, how are you gonna fake a pass to absolutely noone in sight!?

  • knock knock

I’m guessin most of you losers have never played the game of basketball. “how many times can someone runs to pack anothr guy into the bleachers.” But blocks straight up take actual skill. You’ve never played if you think a player running full speed for a layup is looking behind his back. Nigkas that do that ARE pussies, period.

  • vic21

thanks for posting that White chocolate vid. That was awesome, 1:18 is totally sick.

The block? yeah well, good timing and that’s all. Not impressed.

    goal tend

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

    good timing is not impressive…?

  • la huey

@knock knock. so when you hoop, you only make plays against your own man? what about breakaway wide open shots/layups/dunks? by your inane logic, you should only attempt to score when someone is guarding you, right? sounds like you’re just a guy that’s always butt-hurt because he gets his weak ish thrown back in his face all the time.

  • andy

    @Bart, you mean like this?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

you know what, lebron is a freaking moron. just let the damn guy score, already. / on another note, the hesitation crossover on GP at 1:30 is something else. i didn’t quite remember white chocolate like that. we got robbed as basketball fans that he wasted years in memphis.

It doesn’t matter what lebron does, you clowns will never be pleased. Who else in the L can cover the amount of ground that quick and still have the athleticism to block that shot. They way yall complaining sounds like yall regularly block 50 yr old men at your sunday church league CHILD PLEASE. Just enjoy that talent and stop complaining like PMSing broads.

  • Bennie

Anyone on here who even uttered a bit of hate on this play should not be allowed to watch basketball. You guys are straight morons.

  • rikson

    Pass the ball – rondo…..

  • Dutch Rob

    Co Sign Bennie
If a teammate of mine did something like that we all would go nuts. Sending a message and getting your teammates into it is always helpful in a game

  • Solon

That looked like a volleyball spike. booyah

  • ClydeSays

Was this supposed to be funny? “Gots to get everyone on the same page of Mike Brown’s complex offensive playbook…”

    Cause it is.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

One of Bill Russell’s biggest complaints about modern players is that when they make blocks, they rarely try to keep the ball in play…
