Video: Kobe’s Behind the Backboard Shot

In the easy win over the Thunder last night, Bryant tossed in quite a few brilliant shots. But this is the one that’ll be replayed forever:

Dang,That shot was freakin’ nasty!!! Whooo!!!

    • 360vue Posted: Nov.23 at 10:23 am
Its crazy when you consider that in almost all of the circus stuff he’s been pulling off this season he’s been expecting a foul call and just shoots it up without thinking.

    • RV Posted: Nov.23 at 11:03 am
i dont get why this is suppose to be a crazy or amazing shot, isn’t it done a few times a season?? when i firest hear dof it i thought he did a behind the back behind the backboard shot…THAT would have been insane..

    • larrylegend Posted: Nov.23 at 11:06 am

Mamba was playing HORSE with young KD. Just practicing for the ASG.

    • James Posted: Nov.23 at 11:15 am
larrylegend kobes behind the backboard shot is better to me due to the fact he actually got fouled

    • Rob Posted: Nov.23 at 11:44 am
Why did Kobe’s shot count and Larry’s not?

    • Kihwan Posted: Nov.23 at 12:44 pm
I thought there was a rule that behind the backboard shots were illegal. I’m gonna have to try and find that rule.

    • Kihwan Posted: Nov.23 at 12:56 pm
From the NBA rule book: b. Any ball that rebounds or passes directly behind the backboard, in either direction, from any point is considered out-of-bounds. If I am interpreting this correctly, Kobe’s shot shouldn’t have counted.

    • Ronald Posted: Nov.23 at 1:00 pm
Please don’t act like you know the NBA rules when you don’t even know that they changed this rule recently. @James: There was wayyy more contact between Kobe and Harden than Larry and the guy marking him. Larry actually had to time to aim.

    • James the balla Posted: Nov.23 at 1:31 pm
Kihwan - That rule changed for this year actually. But good call.

    • Allenp Posted: Nov.23 at 1:43 pm
      They changed this rule? interesting.

    • Jackie Moon Posted: Nov.23 at 1:45 pm
Kihwan is right and wrong. The rule is correctly written. However, Kobe was not directly behind the backboard, meaning if you were at the free throw line looking at the backboard and where it was above the ground, Kobe was not under that area, he was outside of the edges of the backboard, so it was a legal shot.

    • chiqo Posted: Nov.23 at 2:05 pm
if th at rule changed, they should definitely update the 09-10 rule book, because it’s definitely in there. i just looked. page 30 of the 09-10 rule book which can be downloaded as a pdf at http://www.nba.com/officiating/

    • chiqo Posted: Nov.23 at 2:06 pm
gee, i guess links mean your comment has to be moderated. anywho, if the ball come from over the backboard, it had to be behind it at some point, right?

    • freezy23 Posted: Nov.23 at 2:44 pm
kobe is the man. when are we gonna start hearing about lebron in the dunk contest this year?last year he was talking about hitting it up this year.

    • Dre Posted: Nov.23 at 3:38 pm
It’s a nice shot, but not as good as a lot of his other ‘circus’ shots. I’ve done this in a game before. Not in the NBA, but still.

    • Kihwan Posted: Nov.23 at 3:41 pm
@Ronald, I don’t know the NBA rule book, that’s why I looked it up, smart guy. If they changed this rule, then great, how about they update it in the 09-10 rule book? Maybe they did and only sent you a copy???

    • stevenashjr13 Posted: Nov.23 at 4:40 pm
I’m pretty sure Jackie Moon is correct in that the rule applies if you are behind the backboard and also directly under the area covered by the backboard. Where as Kobe was almost at the edge of the paint which isn’t quite as far as the backboard extends.

    • Anton Posted: Nov.23 at 4:40 pm
Any excuse to get closer to the cheerleaders.

    • Rob Posted: Nov.23 at 4:42 pm

J.R.Smith’s 360 lay-up against the Clippers is 10 times greater/more difficult than this shot from Kobe. (and i love Kobe)

    • Double J Posted: Nov.23 at 5:05 pm
ummm… why so much hostility regarding this rule? dude they changed it, and if you want it changed in the damn “ONLINE” rule book then email it in

    • Jackie Moon Posted: Nov.23 at 5:14 pm
I’ma let you finish, Kobe … but Larry Bird’s behind the backboard shot was the greatest circus shot ever …

    • Joey E. Posted: Nov.23 at 5:32 pm
crazy shot, but it’s kobe so it’s not that crazy

    • Robb Posted: Nov.23 at 5:54 pm
This shot was awesome if you consider Kobe’s been doing amazing shots every game, so this is no fluke. Anyone can do it, but it is Bryant’s consistency in this kind of shots what amazes me. He may be the most skilled played ever.

    • Allenp Posted: Nov.23 at 5:54 pm
So the rule didn’t change, but the refs made a judgement call.

    • kite Posted: Nov.23 at 7:51 pm
Holy crap people, the guy on the video (NBA.com) clearly states that the rule was just changed this year. Also, why is it everytime someone does something amazing (especially when it’s Kobe)everyone wants to declare how unimpressed they are, “I’ve seen better”. Just say thanks and shut up. This is exactly what makes basketball great.

    • Omnixyience (Philippines) Posted: Nov.23 at 10:46 pm
@DIMITRIS DIAMANTIDIS, yo dawg! First, I had a hard time writing your name! Second, If your a fan of Kobe you already saw Kobe’s 360 layup before, so Earl Smith Jr just copy that!

    • J Posted: Nov.23 at 11:38 pm
anyone here seen the kobe dunk over a pool of snakes?

    • ktokyo Posted: Nov.24 at 1:39 am
      Larry who?

    • Dacre Posted: Nov.24 at 3:00 am
      …Johnson

    • sab Posted: Nov.24 at 3:29 am
brilliant shot. can’t agree that JR Smith’s was better, cos Smith’s shot was just flat-out stupid (and lucky).

    • DMC14 Posted: Nov.24 at 4:09 am
I know i went through a period of practising to shoot/layup the ball from behind the backboard(like laying up through the legs, yeah i cant dunk) i probably got 1 in a 1000.

    • NUPE Posted: Nov.24 at 9:28 am
Nice shot, high degree of difficulty… nuff said.

    • Eric Posted: Nov.24 at 12:36 pm
I am a Lakers fan. By the rule, a tunnel, if you will, extends into perpetuity from the rear of the backboard. The ball broke this tunnel and thus the shot is illegal. I bet the refs had never seen that in a game so it’s not a surprise they didn’t call it. They were probably wowed just like everyone else.

    • Eric Posted: Nov.24 at 12:40 pm
After viewing the replay closely: the ball also clipped the top of the backboard. Still an awesome shot!

    • Jukai Posted: Nov.24 at 4:18 pm
Counted or not, Larry’s is shown a bajillion times everytime a special about Bird is on… so Kobe’s will to.
Didn’t Wade also have a shot like that, but he was called for an offensive foul so it didn’t count? Or did I dream that?

    • D-R Posted: Nov.25 at 5:23 am
Definitely dreaming, Jukai. Dwayne Wade doesn’t get called for fouls.

    • antoine Posted: Nov.27 at 8:16 am
How was Larry birds better the same shot by both + Kobe had a lot of defensive contact on his
