Video: Kobe Beats Bucks at the Buzzer

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

The Lakers escaped Milwaukee last night with a last second victory, thanks to the heroics of Kobe Bryant. Yes, he did it again, broken finger be damned.

There was a bit of controversy prior to Bryant’s game-winner, as many felt he charged into Andrew Bogut on the basket prior to the buzzer beater. He may very well have, but the refs gave him the benefit of the doubt (which resulted in a three-point play, setting up the winning shot.)

Following the game, on Twitter, Bogut expressed his frustration with the call, but did so intelligently and hilariously:

If I am completely honest about certain things that pertain to tonights events, someone will steal $$ from me. Honesty is not cool anymore.

@flintstone14 Sometimes he just takes CHARGE

Quick Note. The events tonight, could mean alot of things. If people assume Im talkin bout the game not my prob. I was talking bout CHESS

Sorry, Andrew. Them’s the breaks.

The best part of the night, however, was listening to the shamelessly homerific Bucks announcers call the game. One of them even yelled out, “MISS IT!” as Bryant launched the last shot. No dice.

horrible horrible D, youre ALWAYS supposed to let his team take the last shot not him. same goes for lebron and wade.

  • Jukai Posted: Dec.17 at 9:23 am
I LOVE the Bucks announcers. They’re hysterical, cocky and hysterical. They make Heinsohn look like a BBC reporter, it’s crazy how biased they are.
They spent a good 60% of the Cavaliers game just bad mouthing Lebron about his dancing.

  • Michael Scorn Posted: Dec.17 at 9:27 am
    Was this luck too?

  • Hursty Posted: Dec.17 at 9:39 am
I’ve said it before but.. the Bucks announcers are soooo biased. SO biased. They’re terrible.

  • Epsilon Nupe Posted: Dec.17 at 9:42 am
Even though its only a quater in to the season, its easy to say Kobe is going to win MVP with plays like this.

  • Reflex Posted: Dec.17 at 9:47 am
It was a charge though but Stern will not be denied.
Good to see Skiles opt for the infamous Kobe stopper that is Charlie Bell on Kobe because we all know Kobe can’t hack Charlie fricking Bell guarding him.
Kobe’s still the man, Gasol had another 20+ rebound game while Bynum could only rake in 4? I think the dude’s had 3 10+ rebound games all season which is pathetic for an aspiring All Star. Still, with that being said, go Lakers!

  • Reflex Posted: Dec.17 at 9:49 am
Hursty, I watch games from abroad and the guys who commentate for the Celtics must be the most biased ever. I swear at times it’s like they are wishing death on the opposition.

  • Michael Scorn Posted: Dec.17 at 9:58 am
@Reflex- OMG yes. Tommy Heinson for the Celtics is the worst. I have NBA League Pass and refuse to watch the Celtics channel by their announcers. He is like the loud irrational parent at middle school games.

  • Hursty Posted: Dec.17 at 9:59 am
Yeh we get the Bucks games because of Bogut (Australia). And for some reason, the Heat too. Both lead guys irritate the sh*t out of me. So hyperbolic in descriptions. Just.. URGH haha. Same calls every time Wade dunks, or Jennings hits a jumper. Man, it’s just painful.
Haven’t heard the Celtics guys though. Maybe it’s a good thing then.

  • niQ Posted: Dec.17 at 10:17 am
    LOL MISS IT!!. AHHAHAHAHAHH

  • niQ Posted: Dec.17 at 10:19 am
You know who used to annoy me? The guy who used to do the top 10 and tried to be cool by adding in all this slang.. THAT was annoying.

  • rish Posted: Dec.17 at 10:30 am
Cavs broadcasters are overly biased, also. It’s just how it is.

  • James the balla Posted: Dec.17 at 10:44 am
I am biased towards the Lakers, but at least they aren’t overly biased. The bucks game last night was crazy. If you had never seen a basketball game before, you would have thought Ilyasova was the best player in the league from the announcers!!

  • M Cho Posted: Dec.17 at 10:47 am
The Bucks were robbed. That call on Kobe was terrible and it’ll provide fodder for those who believe the NBA is still rigged.

  • James the balla Posted: Dec.17 at 10:53 am
M Cho … did you Artest go for the layup and Bogut r***d him with no call. It goes both ways man. It was a terrible call… but the only time that the Bucks annoucers said anything towards the Lakers was “Artest though he got it hard on that play, and so do I”.

  • Th3_R3al_Chris Posted: Dec.17 at 11:12 am
We love Tommy Heinsohn here in the bean! Andrew Bogut just made me a fan with his satirical responses on Twitter to those trying to bait him into talking about the non-call. Lakers are good, but they aren’t looking as strong as last year. Bynum seems to have relegated back to his actual self and is having 3 rebound games again.

  • SAB Posted: Dec.17 at 12:04 pm
Mutoni pointing out that others are biased is just hilarious… I can’t believe they didn’t defend this. And I know you need 0.3 to take a shot, so it’s probably a moot point, but that shot clearly went in before the buzzer

  • Hangtime Hec Posted: Dec.17 at 12:17 pm
NOW THAT. Is a buzzer beater. Not that heave he shot against maimi.

  • Hangtime Hec Posted: Dec.17 at 12:22 pm
Who knew that Andrew Bogut had such a great sense of humor? Those lines had me rolling.

  • riggs Posted: Dec.17 at 12:23 pm
i still cant believe he put in charlie freaking bell to defend.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.17 at 12:35 pm
Did none of you guys not see Charlie Bell guard Kobe at the end of regulation? Bell smothered Kobe and forced him to shoot off balance and miss. Just because a guy isn’t a big name doesn’t mean he can’t defend.

  • Vish Posted: Dec.17 at 12:46 pm
    Kobe is amazing…
i love the fact that Lamar is jumping like a kid after Kobe hit the game winner….incredibly satisfying seeing Lamar enjoy the game…. for the love of the game!!

  • Myles Brown Posted: Dec.17 at 1:04 pm
This is all starting to bore me. Kobe obviously needs a bigger challenge. He should change his name to Tiger Woods.

  • ClydeSays Posted: Dec.17 at 1:08 pm
I’m no defensive genius, but why put the 6’3″ Bell on the 6’6″ Kobe in single coverage. Kobe/Jax will take that mismatch every time. Why not double? As a C’s fan, I love Mike Gorman and as much as I’m entertained by Heinson, he needs to step down. Listen to him stumble through a game is just sad. As homerish as he is, you have to give the guy props. He’s got the rings and coaching experience to back up his talk. And he knows the entertainment value in being an a$$. I watch games from different feeds on League Pass sometimes. It’s hilarious to listen to the different announcers take on the game.
Team 1 Announcers: “No WAY was that a foul!!!”
Team 2 Announcers: “How did the Refs miss THAT?!” Knicks announcers seems to be the most balanced in the League. Probably b/c the Knicks have been so bad for so long, Clyde & Mike Breen probably wouldn’t know how to be homers if they tried.

  • Shelton Posted: Dec.17 at 1:15 pm
The call evened out after Ron Artest didn’t get his foul call when Bogut hacked him.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.17 at 1:16 pm
Ben Wallace is 6’7 in sneakers and is one of the best defensive players to lace em up. While size helps, determination, will, and smarts are more important for a great defender.

  • Shelton Posted: Dec.17 at 1:18 pm
How is LA struggling? It was a back to back. Teams can’t even crack a 100 pts on these guys.

  • weneedmoredashes Posted: Dec.17 at 1:24 pm
basically, superstars get those calls some of the time– hey, they practically won miami a championship. many gripe that it’s unfair but it’s those same guys i hear plugging their star-du-jour. its why all teams work hard to make one of their guys into a star even if they aren’t. it’s why i gotta hear some guys talk about kevin martin. it’s the post-jordan, one ring-to-rule-them-all all-out stat-fest nightmare. to paraphrase someone, if jordan was ego then kobe is the id. so you give the man two shots to kill you and he’ll do it. he’s unconscious that way. and the bucks had their shots. literally. 3 huge misses at the line from quote-shooters-unquote. so gripe about the call all you want, but make the free throw. kobe did. and all this about announcer bias. the good-ones are few and far between and, usually extensions of the team attitude. the clippers guys, for instance, are freaking hilarious. like whats-his-face in major league. boston guy would obviously be a sycophant-psycho-rant.

  • toine Posted: Dec.17 at 1:30 pm
The Bucks were robbed. That call on Kobe was terrible and it’ll provide fodder for those who believe the NBA is still rigged. I completely disagree, if you see the replay he didn’t get in front of Kobe in time.

  • Justin Rands Posted: Dec.17 at 1:47 pm
Lakers got killed last night with all the no calls in the second half. Yes, Kobe might of gotten away with one, but Bogut was clearly moving on that play. You can’t be sliding over on contact. That’s a foul. When it comes to Bynum he’s been playing sick the past week or so. In the post game report Phil said he’s been trying to monitor his minutes because his energy is really low. And when it comes to the Lakers struggling? Ha, it’s only 24 games into the season. They will be monsters by the end. They’re just too big and too talented.

  • Jackie Moon Posted: Dec.17 at 1:57 pm
weneedmoreashes – I like your writing style.

  • barnabusb Posted: Dec.17 at 2:09 pm
The best was when Kobe crashed into Bogut on the earlier play and the announcer yelled, “THAT WAS A CHAAAAAAARGE!!!!!!!!” I could picture him jumping on his chair and flailing around while screaming.

  • tealish Posted: Dec.17 at 4:10 pm
    You know what’s funny:
    1. I knew he was going to hit it.
    2. I acknowledge he’s the best in the L, and of the past decade.
    3. He’s the guy I’ll give the ball to down the stretch
    4. Dirk’s clutch stats >> Kobe’s in the past 4 years
    5. I’d still go with Kobe and I don’t know why.
    = Perception is a b*tch.
Case in point: You will NOT see Myles Brown write “This is starting to bore me” about a Dirk game-winner even though he has more in the past 4 years. I’m just playing Myles…sort of.

  • Jackie Moon Posted: Dec.17 at 4:50 pm
tealish – it’s more than perception, it’s because somewhere deep inside you recognize that the circumstances are different, that the degree of difficulty is much higher for Kobe, so that the stats are not an equal comparison

  • Dutch Rich Posted: Dec.17 at 5:14 pm
Classic Jordan on the pull up. Those announcers are terrible. The pay must be crap, I mean the disparity between local channels and TNT, ESPN, ABC is retarded. And don’t sleep Clyde Frazier is annoying as hell too. Only the Yes network is worth listening to.

  • Z Posted: Dec.17 at 6:55 pm
Maybe that’s too bold but I would just double team Kobe on the catch. Wade and Bron would automatically find the open man but Kobe might still want to shoot it. I mean, if Odom beats you on a jumper so be it.

  • robb Posted: Dec.17 at 8:41 pm
@tealish another funny thing: When Kobe hit the shot, there seemed to be more Lakers fans than Bucks fans inside the Milwaukee arena. By the way, those announcers were just ridiculous.

  • nastierthanu Posted: Dec.17 at 10:49 pm
Man it took like 30 comments to mention mike. That shot was so mike esq even his reaction was classic. Kobe is the man

  • tealish Posted: Dec.17 at 10:58 pm
@Z — agreed. I can see Kobe trying to split the double. That’s your best chance against him.
@Jackie — Circumstances are different? Degree of difficulty is higher for Kobe? Where do you get this…? Or are you being sarcastic?
@Robb — Yeah that was pretty funny. It’s like they all cheered then shutup realizing how bad a look it was. But the initial roar was LOUD.

  • Ken H. Posted: Dec.18 at 3:34 am
Orlando tried to double Kobe at the end of the game in the finals. He passed over the top of the double to Ariza who fed fish for the big 3 over Jameer. The man knows what to do in any situation, he’s not gonna blow a game for his own personal glory. When will people finally get over that ignorant perspective?

  • DEC Posted: Dec.18 at 5:54 am
Don’t know why exactly, but it felt preordained that the Lakers would win it when they went into that final time out just one point down.
Ilyasova was having one of his best games until he ruined it by missing two clutch frees. Can’t complain about being “robbed” by the ref when your team repeatedly fails to convert from the stripe.

  • J Posted: Dec.18 at 6:06 am
coincidentally, lakers commentators are the most biased announcers I’ve ever heard, damn, stu lantz and meyers, SO biased. (no offense) at least these bucks announcers gave the props to kobe after the shot. they’re able to acknowledge greatness even if they’re completely one sided on this. unlike those laker commentators who still singing praises to their team whether their down 15, or after a bad game and a loss. it’s not that i hate the team but I’m dead serious on what i feel every time i hear them. and also that was a great shot. awesome.

  • J Posted: Dec.18 at 6:12 am
another thing, rather than facing up his defender, he moved backwards and gave his back instead in order to protect the ball and keep the defender guessing and add more separation when he fades. great move. lastly if you noticed instead of silence, there were a lot of fans screaming when he hit it. that was Milwaukee’s HOME! wow.

  • anjoe intal Posted: Dec.18 at 7:59 am
Lots of Lakers fans in milwaukee.!

  • Michael Scorn Posted: Dec.18 at 8:02 am
@anjoe intal – I know right. Half the stadium exploded when he made that shot.
