Video: Josh Smith Beats Orlando at the Buzzer

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Last time we featured a Hawks video on the site, it was under the impression that Atlanta had clinched its third consecutive Playoff berth. It turned out, that mathematically the Hawks weren’t quite in yet.

It took a breathtaking finish in the ATL last night to ensure the team’s postseason berth. The man known as “Smoove” ended the game against the magic in the most spectacular — and wholly unexpected — way imaginable:

Epic dunk, but also epic box out fail by Rashard.

  • mike

one of the best plays i’ve seen all year…too bad he got screwed out of that all star berth

    Smoove move

    That was a fantastic play…

Wow. What else can you really say?

  • Dirtybird

Still overwhelmed by the ending, but still it shouldn’t have come down to it. If Atlanta didn’t win, I think Orlando woulda had the momentum going into OT.

Vince with the tough fadeaway 3 and solid D on JJ to nearly force OT and Rashard get’s caught napping. Uncool.

  • vtrobot

that was amazing. the East playoffs are going to be nice. josh smith isn’t an all-star this year, but AI is. OK, that makes sense. let’s fix that ridculousness.

  • Ree Roe

Way to finish at the rim Josh. Hawks ain’t scared of naan team in the East now & yesterday was good for us to finally beat the magic tricks. Statement team for my guys. Go Hawks

  • Ree Roe

    * statement win

  • roman

Rashard Lewis- way to box out!!!

  • kudos

WDF. Why was no one anywhere near the rebound?? Some nba players (shard) and (dwight) don’t understand that they can’t just let someone shooot the last shot AND gather up the rebound to shoot it again. Dwight was just staring at the ball the whole time, dummy.

  • letsmotor

great play by josh smith, but it looks like joe johnson took four of five steps first…

  • BostonBaller

Fantastic finish crappy defense….boxing out doesn’t stop until the buzzer sounds, that’s why coaches make teams do box out drills from grade school on up. hahaha

First, Vince Carter fouled Joe Johnson, forcing a travel.
Second, when Josh Smith jumps, it’s like he goes to whole other level. Rashard Lewis didn’t box out, but he was right there for the rebound. He timed his jump correctly and would have grabbed the rebound at the apex of his jump.
Josh Smith jumps later than Lewis, but jumped so high and quickly, than he pretty much explodes past Lewis, catches the ball on a totally different point in it’s trajectory, and then wins the game.
That is an amazing play when you watch it in slow motion.

I’m pretty sure I scared my entire apartment building when Josh did that.

Also, got an email from a friend this morning: “Don’t get me wrong, I’m as excited as any hawks fan that they won the game and the awesomeness of how they won it. At the same time…watch the replay, and watch Josh for the whole possession, not just the dunk. I love it – his arms are up in the air like DUDE, IM WIDE OPEN (for three no less!), GIVE ME THE ROCK! Gotta love him.”

    Yes, yes you do.

NICE! Man that was beautiful. The timing on it was just unreal.

  • http://digitalthread.com AlbertBarr

The slow-mo replay is the best…Josh is so quick that his hand enters and leaves the hoop in less than .2 seconds…just in time for it to count.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Shard really wasn’t napping.
Josh Smith came from the three point line, and Shard actually was in decent position for the rebound.
Josh Smith is just freakishly athletic. He wasn’t in good position, he just out-jumped Shard.

  • LA Huey

Amazing. These Hawks have had the most exciting finishes (win or lose) this year.

  • The Philosopher

    Smith’s timing is otherworldly.

  • The Philosopher

And, he came off one leg. Special.

  • Bruno

    gotta love them hawks

  • ENDS

Allen RaW Lew was garbage the whole nite and DID not Box out. As for vince fouling Joe VC actually looked like a matador letting him take an open shot forcing dwight to come rotate

  • Ronald

I think everyone is placing too much blame on Lewis. The Magic are running some sort of zone defnse, a 2-3/2-1-2 thing. I’m sure that most of you are used to playing a normal man on man defense but in a a 2-3 zone the guards need to box out too in this case the guards. In addition, a lot of the blame was on Dwight for doing a crap heartless rotation forcing Lewis to cover him, notice how he shrinks into the zone as Dwight moves nowhere as J-Smoove stands at the 3pt line (which also contributes to Lewis ignoring him).

  • http://slamonline tealish

    - Not really Rashard’s fault; just got outjumped by a superior athlete
    - VC is cold blooded. People make too big a deal out of his long fadeaways. He probably hits them at a higher % than his non fallaway jumpers.
    - Great game

  • BostonBaller

allen P & Lang are both right in their last comments but haven’t we all been taught that when someone shoots a last second shot find a man and box out? My only thing is that Lewis didn’t even see Smith coming, matter fact Lewis allowed Mario west to waltz in and get position even before he got the game winner smashed over him. lol. 3 Magic players were too far in the paint to be effective on D. Great finish, great win and ATL is scary. (Thank goodness their playoff chemistry is never as good as their talent.)

  • Sweetness

    Watched it CRAZY!!!!!!

  • Shem

Damnnnn. There;s a difference between taking off from where he did and a just a put back… play of the year difference

  • JD

    Woah! Play of the year!

  • thalilbigkahuna

    Now THAT’S a game winner.

  • mike

it was a good play. although i wonder, with timing of the ball coming off the hoop, and the height and distance smith took off from, i wonder if rashard did box out, smiths knees would have caught rashards shoulders, and he woulda boxed someone out of the air, prolly undercutting, and usually when guys hit other guys on alleyoops or plays like that, they call foul. so i kinda feel rashards lack of box out wasnt complete lack of focus. Josh Smith did had an amazing play. Joe Johnson did travel, and Vince did not foul .

  • Rob

I still can’t believe jsmoove wasn’t an all star. It’s ridiculous.

  • sam

    i bet Dwight cried

  • dude

shouldn’t have counted, cause that was clearly a travel by johnson!

  • Thekid2kill

Josh was like I’m open, I’m open Pass me the ball Joe so I can shoot it.

you can even see Josh raising his arms…………
