Video: Refs Rob Kevin Durant at the Buzzer

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Last night, the Utah Jazz and OKC Thunder played in one of the most exciting games of the season, with Kevin Durant and Deron Williams — and Jeff Green; I see you — hitting absurd shots down the stretch (and during the entire game, really) in a desperate attempt to get the W.

Sadly, things came down to a terrible no-call as time expired in overtime, with KD getting visibly fouled on a game-winning three-point attempt.

Though upset, Durant took things in stride following the game. However, the homerific Thunder announcers did not, as they went a little too far in describing the incident: “That, is a TRAGIC non-call!”:

damn didnt know kev had a angry side to him like that, called the ref a b**ch *ss n***a

  • http://www.laumol.nl/weblog Laumol

Great composure by the young Durant to keep his cool after that. Maybe it was a no-call since Kevin Garnett called him a ‘Michael F….ng Jordan’ so the refs decided to correct KG.

Hahaha. Homers make me laugh. But wow. That’s clear.

  • http://www.basketballnonsense.com Melvin

yea really a tragic one! bring tim donaghy back!

  • spit hot fiyah

He said: a foul was a foul!!!!!!!! lol
obvious foul though, he got robbed

  • Fred

The refs are ridiculously incompetent and they are paid to give bad judgment.

  • therighttoremainsalient

foul?… body’s part of the ball.

  • Ken

Wow, what a horrible, horrible call. If they meet in the playoffs, Thunder be looking for revenge.

  • German Reignman

Its not hard to imagine Bennett Salvatore sitting at home, picking up the Rule Book from the coffe table, flicking through the pages until

    “Rule No. 12

    Segment B

    Section 1

    b. Contact initiated by the defensive player guarding a player with the ball is not legal. This contact includes, but is not limited to, forearm, hands, or body check.”

and thinking: Damn, I was wrong

  • vtrobot

Fine Bennett Salvatore. How is that not a foul? Because you’re not allowed to call a foul in the last 5 seconds of a game? People should just tackle dudes then. NBA, the refereeing is probably the worst thing about the product you’re selling. Fix it. Pay the good ones more. Penalize the bad ones. Damn. It is WEAK to end a game like that with that type of an officiating blunder.

  • LA Huey

    That’s unfortunate.

  • underdog

What did CJ Miles think? Where did he learn this? Fouling the top scorer of the L in the last second? Meh. One thing is sure. Durant’s going to kill Utah the next time they meet. Hopefully in the Playoffs. Gotta love DWill, though!

    foul?… body’s part of the ball. ”

ROFF!! Yeah and the kneebone is connected to the d*** bone!!! but CLEARLY C.J. Miles got ALL arm!!! That should have been reviewed!! even though official will rarely EVER make that call!!

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Kevin barely got bumped, but you can blatantly see Miles hacks him on the arm. How could that have been missed? Game would have been over if Kevin had free throws.

  • cramzy

ummm….is anyone else strangely excited that Kd called the ref a b#$%^ a## n#$%^?… no? just me?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com TADOne

    Foul.

  • vtrobot

@ cramzy: yes, i appreciate that. can’t wait to see OKC/Jazz again.

  • Jerod

David Stern’s script for the season didn’t allow for the Thunder to sweep the Jazz. Probably called this one up to set up their impending playoff matchup and give a little ratings bump.

This is just BS because the Thunder would have been just a half game out of the division lead, with a chance to move to first at home tonight. I don’t see how the ref doesn’t call this when it happened right in front of his face. Thunder deserved to win this game.

  • The D Train

Good ol’ Bennett Salvatore. And I shudder to think of what would happen to Mike Rice (Blazers homer) if that scenario happened to Roy and Co. He might actually drop dead of a heart-attack on-air.

  • The D Train

also…Bennett has never had a problem calling a “foul” in the last 5 seconds of a game (see: Game 5, 2006 NBA Finals). Maybe if Miles had backed off and not actually made contact Salvo would have called it. As Philly recently noted, “With Bennett, you never know what you are going to get.”

  • the Rudy Gay Pride

that’s crap. the league was WAY too obvious about that. 1st off, it’s “Revenge” for the Garnett comments about Durant’s “Superstar Treatment” 2nd, they are a first round playoff match up that no body outside of Utah and OK would remotely care about watching. Way to go Stern! Who else thinks John Calipari, Lebron, Amar’e and the #1 pick will end up with the Jay-Z, the Russian Billionaire, and Nets this summer. the NBA, “where scripting games happens”

  • http://digitalthread.com AlbertBarr

If the calling official was to KD’s left then it is possible that it looked like a clean block to him…in the replay though, it is plainly obvious that it was a foul. Lame. KD was on the verge of destroying some folks after the no-call…should be interesting motivation for the Thunder. If I were the Jazz I wouldnt want to see them again this season or post-season.

  • vtrobot

F*ck David Stern. This is why I really hope that neither the Cavs nor the Lakeshow are in the Finals. The league always forces a lot of us to root against what they want to happen. Besides the BS refereeing, how great was it to have DAL/MIA in the Finals a couple years ago? @ Rudy Gay: I’m in BOS and I’d love to see a OKC/Utah series. D Will vs. Westbrook? KD? F yeah. The only downside would be having to see Booz every game.

  • http://Twitter.com/pdxgaybball Dma

Cj miles is that good! Kd is gonna blow up the next game he plays

  • Dtown

    O well.. life goes on.

Time to focus on the playoffs KD..

yea i’d b heated, but good job on keepin ya composure kiid

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Yeah, that was horrible. And good for KD speaking his mind. You can’t swallow the whistle that much. He hacked his entire arm…
But, damn, Dwill’s jumper was pure on that little handoff.

  • doyouwantmore

These are the kinds of things that will shape Durant into even more of a monster in the next few years. Bull%hit non-call though.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

A bad non-call, definitely. But two possessions earlier he got a phantom call go his way on a drive towards to the hoop.
Lost in all this: Deron is a beast.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

@albertbarr — Durant’s not physically destroying folks anytime soon. He looked mad as hell, but you can’t be scared of those loose fitting size small jersey. Let’s be real now.

It’s cool…Scott Brooks and Doc Brown will jump in the DeLorean and make everything right, you’ll see…

  • kevin

in watching the nba this year i have counted 8 wrong calls within the last 5 seconds that is one of them theses refs are old and blind

  • Shem

Clearly a foul, refs should be able to review that after a game. I guarantee Durant gets 3 FT’s. Terrible play by Cj but he got lucky. I love Durant’s passion. Gotta shout out D will with the clutch shot and Jerry Sloan with a great inbound play.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Personally, I hope Utah and OKC don’t play each other in the first round. I hope they beat whoever they play in the first round, and then match up in the second round, or better–the Western Conference Finals.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

There are some NBA players that just look cool all the time, no matter what they do on the court–George Gervin, Bernard King, and Ray Allen come to mind. Kevin Durant is another one of those players. He looked bad @ss just getting fouled, and he looked bad @ss saying “That’s f***** bullsh**!”

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

I know it’s in Utah, but were the fans booing the Thunder? Or the refs?

  • snasty10

that annoucner was hilarious, i like the passion though

  • adrianC513

How do You not call that?

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

Referees miss calls all the time, but with 1.1s left what else could they have been looking but the catch and release. If Stern and the league want to be taken serious as a fair organization they should hold the whole officiating crew responsible for this one. I don’t know what kind of discipline should be implemented but it needs to be made knowledgeable to teams and fans that they take the integrity of the game serious at all levels. If they don’t, I encourage Slam to start running banner ads for Donaghy’s book. Jus’ kiddin!!!

  • big_ticket

if kobe was shooting it they will call it,soory kd

  • thalilbigkahuna

How do you NOT CALL THAT!? A FOUL IS A FOUL!

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

Refs have given him a bunch of b.s. calls this year so I guess this just balances things out a bit. Something all players should keep in mind: “If they call it, it’s a foul. If they don’t it’s not.” B!tching about the non/calls after the game doesn’t do any good and can only get you find.

  • nastierthanu2

Kevin Ollie is in the L? Where is Deron Schefer

  • http://yahoo.com Chi-Town Stand up!

Although it was an obvious foul that should’ve been called, KD summed it up best… It’s only a foul if they blow the whistle, and call it!

  • Simmy Sosa

You know how you can tell the playoffs are about to start? Officiating gets worse.

  • anti-crust

It was obviously a foul….someone was right, playoff mode coming….rules change…the “Stern Rules”…I was impressed thouugh, Durant has looked like he’s worked o his body, he’s going to be unstoppable, even more than he is now…
