Slamadaday: Shannon Brown On A Missed Free Throw

We’ll leave it up to you to decide if Shannon Brown came running in too soon. This is what we decided, though: You got to box your man out, or this is the kind of thing that can happen…

I remember when Jordan did that back in the day. MJ’s was a lot nicer though.

  • Jon W.

He definitely came in too early……….
It’s pretty clear if u watch Shannon, but still, nice play. If it’s not called, it’s not wrong. Nice play!!

  • LA Huey

At least this was a sucessful dunk attempt…

@Jon W., actually isn’t that clear, try to stop the vid right when it turns to 0:15, and see if Brown’s feet are across the line before Bynum releases the shot.

@mj23 whoa, yeah, MJ’s are like an exhibition on leaping amazing … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6ziQNSETe4

When I was playing HS ball (in Canada), people on the perimeter had to wait until the ball touched the rim to go in. FIBA rules?

@ Jackie Moon: His foot definitely crossed the plane before the ball was released…it just hadn’t touched the ground yet. So is the rule that it can’t cross the plane or that it can’t touch inside the line before the shot is released?

@Blue I don’t think that basketball goes by crossing the plane. if you stand next to the out of bounds line with the ball and hold your foot over the line, you’re not out of bounds until you hit the ground.

But who knows, it could be different for free throws. I’m just glad we’re discussing a made dunk.

@ 0:02 seconds you can see the ball out of Bynums’s hands and Brown, about 2 feet behind Bynum still….why the argument, geez, it was a good play. BTW the reason the Lakers are having problems with Phoenix is because of Lopez, and Bynum not being 100% as usual.

@anti-crust Because we like arguing about the rules, and it was very close if you look at his feet, did not cross the plane before Bynum’s release… on a free throw, in the lane, you can lean your upper body over the key all you want, it’s when your feet cross the plane … it’s NOT “obvious”

Also, for fun, when you’re stopping the video to watch Bynum’s release vs Shannon crossing, check out the lane violations on Phoenix’s players in boxing out while the ball is still in Bynum’s hand!

Actually it is not for us to decide. The referees decide that.

This brown guy can really jump. First that crazy missed one, now this, he should enter the dunk contest next year, he would win. I bet he has all kinds of tricks

  • underdog

How about rookie AI against the Sonics. Sounds like it has happened in the last century… Which is actually right. Ahem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hS2YMzmp9M

    Thank you underdog!!!

@underdog – Detlef was absolutely disgusted that no boxed out AI hahaha

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

If Amare had forgotten to box out folks would be calling for his head.

  • dave

I tried doing this in a game and was told I had to wait till the ball hit the rim before entering the 3point line.

I’m guessing NBA rules are different?

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

@dave Me too! I think it’s the high school rule

  • StF

Good dunk, why is the picture the shannon dunk over richardson??

  • david

    @dave, @Jackie
Same thing for me, I think it is everyone but the NBA rules (I’m in Australia), as for the play I’d say it was legal in that his foot didn’t touch the floor till after the release

  • that dude

Yeah talk about false advertising. The pic for slamaday is from a different game and looks way more impressive.

  • kashdef

mj23 is right, this dunk ain’t got nothin on MJ’s especially the one-hand jam oooooohhhwwwweeeee ha Jackie Moons vid is a good example duly noted…

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Sorry, but how the heck do you box Shannon Brown out there? If you stand infront of him, all he has to do is take one step to his left/right and he’s past you.
If you impede that movement, it’s an off-the-ball foul.
Just a great play by Brown.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

You’re supposed to call it when the guard crosses the 3 line so the guy on high left can box him out. Communication, people!

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

Who invented this dunk – anyone know? Jordan was the first I know of, but he probably stole it from David Thompson or something.
Also, other dave, get an original name, dude. Sheesh.

  • anti-crust

I’m out of here, you guys argue all you want.
