Video: Ron Artest Saves Lakers at the Buzzer

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Moments before bedlam erupted at Staples Center last night, I tweet/joked that Ron Artest would soon be starring in a remake of “Escape from L.A.” His horrific shot selection down the stretch had turned all Laker fans against him.

Seconds later, he was the most beloved person in Hollywood.

His miraculous putback of a Kobe Bryant airball at the buzzer broke the Suns’ hearts, and now has the Lakers one win away from their third consecutive trip to the NBA Finals.

It was incredible in every way, and will have people scratching their heads for quite a while. Perhaps Ron (and hilariously, Craig Sager) explained it best himself immediately after the game: “Queensbridge!”

    great game.

  • German Reignman

I like how Kobe is still posing, hopping on one leg, shooting arm stretched in the air as if hes making the shot WHEN HE IS AIRBALLING THE BALL … love it …

    @reignman, yeah, that’s pretty funny.
I swear though, it looks like Ron Artest doesn’t have full control over his legs. Like he never grew out of the “slightly awkward teenage body” phase. He just got massive instead.

although I am a Laker-hater. I godda say its kinda nice to see Ron hit a big shot. Hes been kinda quiet since joining the Lakers.

  • capostat

LOL @ Reignman. That’s one of the most embarrasing things that can happen.

  • Jorge

I saw Ron at Venice Beach CA when he first joined LA and it seemed like nobody knew who he was or cared because not a lot of people were around him.
    How about now!

@Reignman – grasping at straws, eh?

I’m rooting for the Suns and Ron Artest joining the Lakers after that “bad blood” with Kobe while he’s with the Rockets did not make me more of a fan of his but this is a great moment for him and Kobe. @Reignman, sure,KB airballed it but they won so that fist pump is certainly not out of place.

  • Lawrence

checkout frye bearhugging pau…it was like how ron artest hugged kobe.lmao.

  • Jorge

@Reignman, that is why Kobe is who he is. Even when he sees 3 people on him, he still have the guts to take the shot. Ask LB how that went for him, he passes the ball and sits there….I’d rather have a player who is willing to fail vs a player who is not willing to even try.

  • Logues

    good point Jorge. i agree

  • doyouwantmore

Did anyone else notice Dudley stand there, watch Kobe’s shot, stand there some more and watch Artest get the rebound, and then stand some more as Artest took the shot? In three seconds of play the guy moved about four inches and his hands never came up past his chest.

@Reignman : followthrough. all shooters are taught to do it

  • JP

Lakers won despite bad refs once again in this serie. Don’t know how it’s possible to give one team all the touch fouls and on the other end nothing.

Suns 161 FT Lakers 112 FT, that’s insane.

@ JP its not that insane when u consider the lakers shot 60 3pt attempts in game 3 and 4.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

There’s no time left on the clock and the Suns are *still* standing around waiting to catch the long rebound and run up the court.

Artest redeemed himself and I LOVE IT, Kobe took a quick shot that allowed a rebound. LAKERS win next game beat Celtics in 6. Artest shuts down pierce and wins us a title. LAKERS THREE PEAT IS ON ITS WAY.
