For Old Time’s Sake: Mayor KJ

Kevin Johnson was the Steve Francis of the early 90s. A high-flying guard who could throw down with the best of them and kill you off the dribble. After being drafted by Cleveland in 1987 and losing the starting job to Mark Price, he was traded to Phoenix where he became a 3x NBA All Star and a regular on the highlight reel. I know ya’ll remember this one on Hot Rod Williams and that one on Hakeem the Dream…. BOOM!

then years later he and hot rod were on the same team. I still think his dunk over hakeem going baseline was greater than mostly all

I think he was better than Steve Francis. Steve only made the ASG getting voted in by the fans. I pretty sure K.J had the respect of the coaches which is much harder to earn.

Dude wanted a piggy back ride

The Steve Francis line sells KJ short.
In other versions of this vid you can actually read his lips: “Let go my leg!”

KJ was a big part of the best Finals in recent history. Thanks, Mr. Mayor.

yeah I want to have the ’92-’93 finals on DVD; the Paxson 3, the huge Jordan game, the triple OT game…. awesome

  • Overtime Posted: Jul.26 at 12:25 pm

    KJ!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • vtrobot Posted: Jul.26 at 12:37 pm
@ Gerard: I also want to rewatch that whole POR/LAL series from 2000. Fans need to be able to have access to view an entire series.

  • SpaceJam Posted: Jul.26 at 1:04 pm
He was one of the only pg to avg 20/10 in back to back seasons. Very underated.

  • geof Posted: Jul.26 at 1:24 pm
His dunk on Hakeem was better.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jul.26 at 1:29 pm
@vtrobot: you might find it somewhere, a crappy download or something. But I agree, the NBA could make some money selling DVD’s of series like that on NBA.com. I would definitely be interested.

Also thought it would be a good idea to release all-star games on dvd.. Have the other events (dunk contest, 3 point shoot out) as special features..

  • BossTerry Posted: Jul.26 at 1:46 pm
Oh, and KJ was pretty much awesome.. His jersey was impossible to find back then, when my mom went on a business trip to Phoenix, I had her bring me back a purple one..

  • Schneezy Posted: Jul.26 at 1:48 pm
by popular demand, the Hakeem facial has been added. better?

  • Tommy Patron Posted: Jul.26 at 1:55 pm
KJ/Tom Chambers pick and roll was ill.

Loving these trips down memory lane, but godda ask- Whats up with these nicknames??? Mayor KJ?? Scottie boy??? whats next, president T.Hardaway?? Navy boy Robinson??

  • davidR Posted: Jul.26 at 3:35 pm
love these FOTS’. keep them coming schneezy. but yea, looking at KJ dunk on the big guys, it sucks for them cause he’s so short so he has to jump really close to the rim, leaving not much room for the blocker to jump without hitting the rim. still dope to watch though, and man, hakeem got him back hard the next time

  • Schneezy Posted: Jul.26 at 3:51 pm
@BossTerry… i dunno dude. just what pops into my skull. can’t please errrbody.

  • Robb Posted: Jul.26 at 3:55 pm
KJ was very underrated no question about that

  • BossTerry Posted: Jul.26 at 4:06 pm
No disrespect, your doing a great job!

  • STEVIE GEE Posted: Jul.26 at 8:38 pm
Thats my Mayor!! One of sac towns finest ballers!

  • Scottie Pimpin Posted: Jul.26 at 8:58 pm
kevin johnson over the dream…should be in the top 10 easily.

  • Martey Posted: Jul.26 at 11:27 pm
KJ was so underrated. His dribble wasn’t flashy but he was so consistent. If I recall his turnover ratio was real low and that first step was the quickest in the league, he gets into that key quick. Plus the hops. Man glad to see he made something out of himself afterwards.

  • Toni Kukoc Posted: Jul.27 at 10:19 pm
Deron Williams (Jazz) = Kevin Johnson
but the firts one get his recognition, although still not enough!
