For Old Time’s Sake: Scottie Boy

Just absolutely demolishing Patrick Ewing. I wonder how different a player he would have been without MJ on his team. One of the greatest defenders the league has ever seen and as polished as can be on the offensive end, would he have been better or worse without him? Wouldn’t have won as many rings but would he have led a team, who knows? I think when he stepped over Ewing he said “Pat, how’s my a** taste?” Did anyone else hear that?

Now THIS is what the F— i’m talkin ’bout.. These “For old time sake” posts are the only thing getting me through work everyday. Amazing job, SLAM, and thanks for the memories Scottie, as a Bulls fan I make sure never to overlook your insane nastiness

  • Overtime

What a dunk, there is another one of Scottie that is just ON someone, it escapes me atm who the defender or the team is, but that was ridicolous too

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Did people really call him Scottie Boy?

  • SMK

who are the most posterized players in NBA history? Ewing has to be up there. Not that it’s a bad thing, more a testament to size and longevity. And playing 10 games a year against Jordan and Pippen.

  • Erika Badu

just a damn beast. this dunk is far better, in my opinion, than Jordan’s famous one on Ewing yet we don’t see it nearly as many times. people GREATLY underestimate Scottie when they speak of MJs titles/greatness. I honestly think this guy is EASILY top 30 all-time maybe top 20. He could shoot, pass, run the offense, and lock down literally any position 1-5. I’m not saying MJ wasn’t great but he gets A LOT of extra credit for Scottie’s hard work. F*** Skip Bayless!

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Best in-game dunk ever IMO. It was a huge play in a huge game and the violence and emotion are just amazing. Pip was the man.

  • JTaylor21

SMK, I think guys like Zo would stake claim also. Do all you jordan cronies see that pippen could do it on his own or did jordan help him do this too.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

No. He was never called Scottie Boy… And that was an awesome dunk. Followed up by some serious taunting on the part of Scottie.

  • Martey

Ewing is one of my favorite players ever but he may be the posterized ever. And by posterized I mean actual posters, the ones you can find in the poster racks in stores with the Kurt Cobain and 2pac ones. As for Pip, circa 97, i actually liked his game better than Jordan. As a wingman/slasher he was the deadliest. Arms as long as a center that wraps around a guard on D. He actually had the toughest defensive assignments..Stockton, Payton, Miller, etc,..

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance

@Erika, the dunk itself is definitely better, but the baseline fake MJ put on Starks and Oak are what make the complete play better to watch.

Shot blockers get dunked on. The best shot blockers of all time have also been in some of the best posters of all time Zo, Mutumbo, Ewing. Guys nowadays just move out of the way.

  • WangChung

    @SMK: Shawn Bradley

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

Scottie was top 5 in the league at one point. no weaknesses to his game. he’s also the best perimeter defender of all time, I think, and it’s an absolute joke that he was never DPOY.

  • K.a.

Scottie boy?!! Pippen can play a bit i guess.

  • Tommy Patron

The great Red Kerr on the call…..

  • Erika Badu

Jordan should never have won DPOY while there was a guy on his own team that was infinitely more deserving. Just another example of how the league and the media (and the refs) kissed MJ’s ass and gave him the kinda special treatment that no athlete before or since has come close to receiving.

  • http://thacorner.net/forums Kevin

Classic. He smashed on Ewing, walked over him, and then told Spike to sit his short ass down on the sideline

  • pennydunk_1

Hubert made his freethrow to compensate

  • giogolo

    KILL THAT!!!

  • OneStep

Two great passes on the break to set him up too. Jordan without Pippen? Pippen without Jordan? Not even worth considering. They were the top tandem in NBA history. Enjoy them for what they were together and not what they might have been apart.

  • Martey

@onestep Actually, the year Jordan took off to play baseball, Pippen had an mvp caliber year and really came into his own.

  • http://www.basketbrasil.com.br Rubens

    Erika Badu is hating!
Gotta love Oak stepping up to his fallen team mate…

  • chingy

If Pip had a more consistent jumper, he could have been top 10. A legend nonetheless.

  • Overtime

Number 2 on this link is what i was trying to think of, looks like it might be on Oakley?

  • JTaylor21

Rubens, how is she hating. All she’s doing is stating the facts. Jordan was great but damn people love to talk about him like he was some kind of deity. Which leads to the media gassing him up even more. Pippen was a superior defender compared to Mike and anyone who disagrees has been in MJ’s basement too long.

  • http://www.borntocompete.com Money$hot

One of the most underrated players in his era, he had an all around game, and went deep into the playoffs without Jordan. I’m not sure but I believe the Bulls got eliminated the series before the eastern conference championship. And went to the western conference championship with Portland without Jordan. He had everything to do with the 6 rings as much as Jordan.

  • Trout

I think he did the same on Karl Malone in trhe ’96 finals in Utah or was it during the ‘Flu’ game.

  • roebro

actually, we’ve seen how Scottie has played without Jordan by his side – twice. once when Jordan was retired and another when Scottie was with Houston and Portland – remember those years?

  • Benjamin Stone

My favorite is still Pippen over Charles Smith. Search YouTube. He did it right in the middle of Jordan’s double nickel and made the game even that much more ill…

  • eyal

I was a knicks fan in the mid 90′s, but this has always been my fave dunk of all time!!

  • Chris

The NBA is not like this any more. Full of pretty boys worrying about being politically correct and adjusting their headbands.
Bring back the nastiness, where are the b*stards in basketball these days?
Prefer the 90′s, when players served up facials not facebooks and typhoon dunks not tweets. Grrr….

@overtime u r probably thinking about the charles smith one

  • unrel

pippen was a joy to watch… locked down everyone.. dunked on everyone.. played his role to perfection with MJ.. forget being the best ‘robin’ in history.. dude is a champion.. and earned every ring… but this dunk in particular was great.. because he was considered ‘soft’ and ‘fragile’.. and the knicks were bulying and punking him.. and this reminded the nation that he was the second best player on that floor..

  • mick

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

  • unrel

@mick… you’re wrong.. but he’s better than melo..

  • Erika Badu

    @unrel… you’re right

  • The D Train

A Peter-North style decimation there. All these years later and it still amazes and causes goosebumps.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com zee!

The year this happened, they used a still of this dunk for Scottie’s basketball card. Hilarious. Also, that silent Assassin Nike commercial was one of the best they ever made.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I heard Pippen refers to himself in 3rd person.- “Scottie Pippen is hungry now”. (to waiter) “Scottie Pippen is ready to order”.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Pippen is one of the greatest defenders ever to play in the NBA. If people remeber his skills he always did whatever needed to help his team win. Guard the best player, pass, rebound, score–Pippen doesn’t get the respect he deserves and will never, but to me he is one of the greatest all around players to ever play.

  • kh

No tippin’ Pippen! I remember watching that dunk live and going crazy when he gave the extra shove to Ewing!

  • JTaylor21

SLAM can we get some Dominique “dunk on my mama” Wilkins highlights. Especially the one where he annihilated larry bird’s non defensive a**. Bird couldn’t even stop a dead man from scoring.

  • Scottie Pimpin’

    Pimps Up !

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

to anyone, especially russ: russ did this top 10 players to never be named mvp post a few years ago, and scottie was one of them. what i’m asking is, does anyone know where that scottie pippen youtube highlight mix, with kanye’s big brother playing in the background is? i think that was the sickest highlight mix i’ve ever seen of any player in any sport. it basically showed scottie’s sickest plays, but painted this picture that he’s being overshadowed by “big brother jordan.” ufcking youtube took it down cause of the music copyright and i haven’t been able to find it

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

nm, after some googling, i was able to find it. try to ignore the trial watermark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JHyGY6WKxo

Crazy @ss dunk, gotta love Scottie… But I can also definitely understand why John Starks clotheslined him:

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

God damn Pip is a beast. Jordan and Scottie are the best 2-3 combo of all time… that’s right Wade/LeBron, you got some big ass shoes to fill.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Erika, jordan won DPOY in 88, do you mean the more deserving player in that roster is PIPPEN 1988? I hope you do not mean that.. And i think that revealed you are just hatin’..

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

and people seriously think that pip dont get his respect due? wow, what do you want more? do you want to claim his legacy are better than mike’s so he could get the respect you people think he’s not gettin’? no body is passing on pip idiots!

LOL, no preferential treatment since? Have you not been following the career of LeBron James? He didn’t even have to earn it like Mike did.

  • Reedan

    Best 1point-dunk ever :p

  • MikeC.

Ewing did get boomed on quite a few times. That happens when you actually rotate on D to help out your teammates instead of just watching from the weak side like most of today’s players do. Ewing was also under the notion that he could block everything, so he got a lot of Spalding in his mug. No player in the league’s history got dunked on more than spaghetti-man Shawn Bradley. Dunking on Bradley was such a customary practice that it even got its own nickname: Bradley baiting. Young players in the league hadn’t made their bones until they threw one down on Bradley. So many sick dunks, but I think Ed O’Bannon got him the best with a powerful lefty cram.

  • Omar

Just came from the Magic article and this is another article worth discussing, LOL. I don’t think there is a more underrated player than Scottie. He was the best perimeter defender I’ve ever seen, guarded the best player on the team 1-4, primary ballhandler and was good for 20-5-5. I’m sure MJ busting his ass in practice everyday helped make him great but Scottie’s game complimented Mike’s game perfectly. He did all the dirty work like guarding the best guy and handling the ball that kept Mike fresh to score all those points and he still got his. And Mike was nowhere near Scottie as a defender. And someone above said Scottie > Kobe, I don’t know if that’s true but if I were starting a team, I would probably take Scottie over Kobe cause if the other team has Kobe, Scottie would lock him down…… And this is the best dunk in an NBA game by the way.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

If that happened today, Mike Breen would be complaining about how there is no place in the game for Pippen’s attitude and how a real champion doesn’t need to do all that. Betcha.

  • Erika Badu

@Omar, by that logic wouldn’t you take Scottie over MJ?

  • Omar

No ma’am, because I’m not sure he would shut Mike down, we need someone from those old Bulls teams to tell what was up!

  • hammer

Yo j. C’mon man. U serious? Pip IS getting his dues!? He gets unnoticed and not enuff credit all the time by the media. Tru hoops fans know that back n the day pip was an animal str8 up. Media 2day when praising coach phil only mention jordan kobe and shaq as the superstars he has guided. Where’s the luv 4 #33?..and that ewing facial? My favorite pip moment. Most underrated dunk ever IS the best in game dunk EVER. And as sick as that dunk pip had on charles smith where pip landed on his backside this 1 on patrick chewing was illmatic. 1st he lays the BOOM on him then he shoves him n2 the luvabulls, walks over him and then tells spike “clocker”lee 2 sit his ass down. Hilarious and awesome moment 4 all bulls fans who truly hated the knicks. Still hate the knicks 2 this day
