For Old Time’s Sake: Glen Rice

Glen Rice was one of the coolest players of the 90s. He lead Michigan to a National Championship in 1989 and was promptly drafted by the expansion Miami Heat (in their 2nd year) with the 4th overall pick of the ’89 Draft. Rice is one of the most accurate shooters in NBA history and ranks 8th all time in 3-pt Field goals with 1,559. Rice won the ’95 three-point shootout at All Star weekend, was a 3x All Star, 1x All-Star MVP in ’97, and won a championship with the Lakeshow in 2000. Rice scored a career-high 56 points against the powerhouse Orlando Magic in the ’94-’95 season, hitting 20 of 27 shots including 7-8 from beyond the arc (recap below). Rice retired after a short stint with the Clippers in the ’03-’04 season. Shout out to Eric from France for the suggestion.

When Carmelo Anthony was coming up, I used to compare him to Glenn Rice and Glenn Robinson.
    Great videos.

    SMOKESHOW

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Carmelo is more like Pierce than he is Rice/Robinson.

  • The Philosopher

Yeah, he is less like Rice than I had originally thought.
That was based from when he was in college, though…

  • http://gmail dirty frank

    wow

  • letsmotor

Great videos. And I cosign IAMORANGE.

  • Ben

Would be nice to see a Rod Strickland FOTS

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick NotebookNick

I second Strickland. Anyone have that picture of GRW in just his jersey?

  • larrylegend

there were times, when no SLAM dropped without a glenn rice’s wife reference…

  • http://shaq_attaq@msn.com kobesBESTfriend

If his stupid wife didnt mess it up 4 him he could of retired a Laker…best stroke in the league 4 almost a decade

  • http://Www.lkz.cd Darksaber

So THAT’s GRW? This is the female that drove Slam commentary and for ages? Hmm, i expected….more.

  • Overtime

Anyone else think he looks a little bit like Lawrence Fishburne in Boyz in the hood?
    What a player

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    I agree with Darksaber.

  • tavoris

lol. It’s a bad angle, Darksaber. Her face is blah, but her body is INSANE. At least it was.

  • poopinamilkshake

    BUTTERHEAD!!!

  • andy

    smoooooooooooothest J

  • flipnoyce

He had one of the wettest jumper, net all day!!! How about a lil Muggsy Bogues. The smallest dude ever to make the NBA. Or Bob Cousy the pioneer of and1 basketball on the hardwood. One of sickest pg of his time!

  • http://SLAMonline.com Schneezy
  • JD

    the original Joe Johnson

  • Overtime

Its funny when people try compare these guys with todays players.
Like that guy who put David Robinson and Dwight Howard in the same sentence

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

agree with the Rod Strickland f.o.t.s., also maybe Mitch Richmond.. IMO he was the best 2 guard in the 90s not named Mike or Reggie.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

^ or Clyde…. Almost forgot my all time favorite player..

  • http://Www.lkz.cd Darksaber

Next FOTS, Clyde the Glide: yup, my alltime fav Shooting Guard.

  • http://www.clutchfans.com/ Blue

Even though he was a shell of his former self when got to Houston (a Thick candy shell I might add), dude was nice enough on those Heat and Hornet teams to have my respect regardless…

  • JoeMaMa

True SLAM heads know GRW was a trash talk staple. If you build anyone up, you’ll get let down. But she’s the goods. Didn’t Glen recently beat the sh*t of of some guy hiding in her closet?
Oh, and he could play, THOUGH, in his 56 point game, it should’ve been 55 (foot was on the line for a 3). But that’s not hate…that’s just a fact I’m sharing with those who remember that game…man, he could shoot.

  • iLL wiLL

Those Glen Rice wifey references were mad funny!

  • total scrotal implosion

I remember reading that joemama someone find a link. And I heard shaq smashd back in the day

  • The Wize

    “Glen Rice for three!”

  • http://thacorner.net/forums Kevin

    Damn Glen Rice won

  • Martey

I don’t know about accuracy, but form wise, Glen Rice had a better J than Reggie, maybe than Ray Allen too. Hornets Glen Was better to me though

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com Masr

My god I loved glen rice during his time in miami, my very first nba jersey was a miami heat glen rice jersey (born and raised in south florida so im no bandwagon hopper)

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

I forgot, and maybe I’m lazy, but how many points did he score again in that All-Star Game in ’97? Wasn’t it a record?

  • JTaylor21

Ray Allen has the best J form wise than GRice. GRice may be the better shooter by a small margin over Ray and Reggie is the best shooter out of all three.

  • S_kemp

    terrel brandon was an allstar?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

The dumbest trade ever, was Glen Rice for Zo. To this day it still baffles me.

  • pais

jim jackson, jamal mashburn, chris jackson, mitch richmond, strickland, Drexler…just somemore ideas. I’m loving this concept. Keep ‘em coming.

  • SylvioMac

I think its time for a Laterell Spreewell FOTS.

    Or Larry Johnson.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    (thunder) Dan Marjle..

  • MikeC.

Purest jumper I’ve ever seen was Allan Houston. Mechanics-wise, his J was/is perfect.

  • MikeC.

Also, the mentions of GRW in trashtalk back in the day were always priceless.

  • tim

anyone remember the WB shoes he wore?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    Those video’s were great.
Can we get a Willie Burton mix sometime?

  • ai come back

yo wats the song at the beginning of the 56 pt game

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@Gerard Himself – yeah he got the record for most points in a quarter and most points in a half. He came up and hit 3-4 threes in a row, got a sweet dunk on the bass line of a Chris Webber pass – Wilt Chaimberlain was in the audience and the court side commentator was running back and forth telling him he was getting closer and closer and Wilt was saying, if he could put a jersey on he ‘would have to do something’ to stop him from getting the record….G-MONEY iced it from the free throw line… :) Glen Rice Glen Rice Glen Rice…

  • tavoris

    co-sign MikeC. Allan Houston’s J was textbook

  • C-Mac

I used to compare Carmelo to Glen Rice but now I think he’s a bit more like Barkley with a better shooting touch but he doesn’t have the rebounding ability.

  • C-Mac

    FOTS: Mount Motumbo, Bernard King

  • tavoris

Melo plays like a young Bernard King. Kill it with the other comparisons.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

For my childhood years of Slam, the phrase i read most was Glen Rice’s Wife… she aight, but i think u guys boosted her a bit

  • http://aol.com Run’N'Gun219

    Glen Rice jumper was money…
And can we please get a Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson FOTS

  • JTaylor21

How in the hell does Melo’s game compare to CB34? There are some idiots on this site that don’t even watch ball at all, WOW

  • http://sfjdkldsfl.com Jukai

    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  • tavoris

@meloman-it’s because she’s the reason for most of his questionable career decisions.
