For Old Time’s Sake: Jason Williams (white chocolate)

From J-Stock to J-Will, why not? With the exception of maybe Pistol Pete, RIP, what white boy has better handles than Jason Williams? Steve Nash, Stockton? I don’t think so but it’s certainly up for debate. Picked 7th in the 1998 NBA Draft, Williams played a crucial role for a Sacramento Kings team that had plenty of talent in C-Webb, Peja, and an old but still productive Vlade Divac. J-Will helped lead the Kings to a playoff birth and made Sactown a regular on the highlight reels. A few interesting facts about J-Will… 1) He played high school hoops with Randy Moss. 2) He holds the record for most assists in a game at UF (17). 3) Williams’ #55 jersey was among the top 5 sellers in his rookie season. 4) He won a championship in 2006 with Miami.

White Chocolate was too raw, sick handle. Dude was nice with it. I still liked Mike Bibby in Sacto more though

  • The Philosopher

    An all time NBA showman.

  • The Philosopher

    Shout out @Schneezy.

  • Waggle

Just missing his cross on Payton and smoking Vlade in the face with the ball on the break. haha.
Never forget the playoff series against Utah in ’98/’99.

This video will get the most comments, i’m sure…. I wish him and VC got to play on the same team, those highlights would have been GOAT

One of my favorite players, he was incredibly fun to watch.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I fully supported the Kings efforts during the J-Will/Bibby years. They had such a nice squad, C-Webb, Bobby Jackson, Vlade, Doug Christie, Peja….damn that was a fun squad.

  • eugene

Gary Payton still dosent know what happend.

  • 2dope

I could watch him punk GP all day. Never gets old…ever!

@Kap: ofcourse i mean in their prime

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Gary Payton’s entire demeanor after that was priceless. I can picture him saying,”Well damn, that white boy quick.”

  • lala

I got no idea that this guy was so huge!!!
He wins a new fan 2day
    Crazy!!

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Elbow pass was legendary. Too bad nobody converted with it, but awesome nonetheless.

Elbow pass was legendary. Too bad nobody scored with it, but awesome nonetheless.

  • http://screwjams.tumblr.com cramzy

why would the basketball gods wait til last year to get him and Vince on the same team? In their primes, they woulda have been the sickest tandem on the wing. Too bad he never made an allstar team either. He woulda did the fool!

  • snasty10

i haven’t hooped in about four months, but after watching this video im definitely taking time out of my day to go jack up some fastbreak three pointers and drop some dimes. Hopefully not to rusty…the GP cross was just beautiful

  • Hussman25

Too bad Will’s is trying to run from this version of him. This is the one hoops fans love the most. He had to change to stay in the L; but this is what made and makes him so special. One of the best showmen the L’s had in a long time.

  • Sparker

funny, he was kind of looked down on for being a hot dog when he came into the league, but the truth is right here. one of the few guys who actually justified the nba tagline. that sh*t brings you out of your seat.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

@Eboy, his behind-the-back bounce pass to Webb was crisper and more on target than any bounce pass I can offer. What the hell…

  • Overtime

One of the most entertaining players ever, very cool guy.
@Eboy, I’m with you, I was in love with those squads

  • Joey E.

man, these moves are straight nasty. Jdub was raw. I love that elbow pass. i’ve always tried it and can never get it so smooth. love this guy

  • http://jaredmintzisthetruth.blogspot.com Jared

Growing up post magic/bird, i watched a lot of really good players and a lot of fun players, but I don’t think anybody was more raw than this dude. I always thought I crafted my game after Iverson and Mark Jackson, but I gotta say Jwill probably had more of an influence on me than anyone, and he probably did the same for a lot of tweenage/teenage ball players at the time. I still like watching him play even as a bench player seeing minimal burn…I just wish he was more focused when he was younger.

  • Sparker

and by the way, i don’t think you really need to ask: what white boy…? what nba player would have been fine.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

    My n**ga.

  • Overtime

I am willing to bet everyone has watched this through at least twice

  • http://slamonline.com Schneezy

@Sparker. I can think of plenty of dudes with better handles than J-Will, just no white boys… this is why it was phrased that way. Not meant to offend.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Talk about wasted talent…
Also, I had a friend who swore that at one point Jwill had the tightest handle in the league.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Remarkably, the wasted talent wound up with a ring. There’s a lot of other wasted talents who never got one (a ring) that I loved the sh*t out of as players….Larry Johnson, Latrell Sprewell, Tim Hardaway just to name a tiny handful.

  • Ryan.T.

I still rock the JWill jerseys to this day. My white Kings jersey is really yellow though…

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

    My n|gga.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

    Awesome.

  • tavoris

J-Will had that “special” kind of court vision that not many players had. Talent-wise, he was phenomenal.

  • bentherealdeal

allenp: without a doubt. everything else about him was somewhat overrated but the handles were the f-cking truth.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Eboy
So you disagree with me, or you just wanted to note that he got a ring?

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick NotebookNick

Hilarity. One of my boys was the same way in HS, most definitely because of JWill. He still has a jersey he rocks to this day. Doesn’t fit very well anymore though.

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Allen, I would have to agree with your friend, that was what stuck with me about jwill. Granted he had tons of turnovers, especially in his kings days, but almost all of them were because of his errant passes. I always thought his dribbling skills were sick, it looked like he had the ball tied to a string. Plus he bounced the ball pretty high off the ground, it had to bounce back hard and fast, I don’t know how he could control it so well. Although there were times when I coulda swore he carried…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Well….maybe you need to expand upon how dude is a wasted talent. Dude has played in the league for a decade, been in numerous playoff series, won a ring and is still contributing to a contending team today.

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

And oh god I just thought of something: slam, I would kill for a FOTS of young michael finley, especially his rookie season as a sun. PLEASE.

  • era

thats one reason i want to see rubio in the L. Even if he is ‘just’ the next jwill, how great would that be? i wanna see passes like that in the top 10 again!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Ok, I’ll expand.
Dude had outstanding physical gifts, and clearly put in time to improve on some of them. But, his penchant for being stubborn, combined with his love of weed, clearly stunted his growth. Moreover, he was far too content to be just a passer, instead of striking that attacking balance that makes the great point guards, despite having all the physical gifts to be an absolute beast at going to the rim. Shot way too many jumpers, played way too little defense, and smoked way too much weed.
Wasted talent. Dude had the pure talent to be one of the all-time greats. Never put it together.

  • unrel

dude was nice with it.. probably wouldn’t go down in greatest pg discussions.. but he’s a people’s champ..
