For Old Time’s Sake: The Admiral

David Robinson is the greatest player to ever come through the Armed Forces and is also one of the best centers in NBA history. Incredibly productive, efficient, MASSIVE, and a great attitude are a few of the things that come to mind when thinking of The Admiral. He deserved that ’99 championship with Timmy D as much as anybody in the league and was really a model professional athlete. His nike commercials were EPIC. See Below.

    Love this guy, I know he took and still takes heat for his ”softness”, but anyone who can play professional sports for that long and maintain their core values and beliefs deserves respect in my books..

    And regarding Dwight Howard, you can’t even come close to mentioning his name in the same breath as Mr. Robinson, P Ewing, or The Dream.. I’m not hating on Dwight he just needs a lot of work on his offensive game.

    @Jukai: I think you’re totally right about D-How’s vert. The guy can easily jump over DRob during his prime. (imho Dwights athleticism is slightly underrated) But, from what I read in a few interviews, D-Rob was fast as hell and he consistently beat guards down the court during games and in practice. I think Dwight has the ability to do the same but rarely shows it.

    I am a fan of Robinson since the begining and he’s the reason why im a Spurs fan.
    First, why the fuck some people dare to compare Dwight and Robinson, its not even debatable.
    Talking about his speed, when he first arrived at the training camp for his rookie season, he was the FASTEST player, even beats his guards. When was the last time a rookie center was able to beat all his teammates at a 100meters ?

    Any argument that references Hakeem owning Shaq as evidence that Robinson was more dominant is just plain embarrassing.
    And Robinson played better man-to-man and zone defence than Howard does, and Robinson was a better shot-blocker.

    Dwight could learn a thing or two from The Admiral! Right now he couldn’t hold his jock! But if the kid would actually listen to Pat Ewing and get in some serious film studying and work on his game he could be just as good. But most of these new NBA stars just rather play off of pure talent and not work on their overall game. Yeah he could out jump everyone in the Association right now but what about his overall impact on a game (it sucks!). On court Leadership and On court Decision Making are two of the key things he lacks. The Admiral is the dream player to build a team around.

    Newsflash: Dwight Howard’s vert is under 40 inches. That’s not that fantastic, okay? He’s not the first player to dunk on a 12′ rim, for god’s sake. SHAWN BRADLEY could grab the top of the backboard. Hell.

    Howard’s footwork is NEVER gonna be as good as Hakeem’s. EVER. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because the only other center who could move like that was Kareem. The one real thing holding Howard back is a lack of confidence in his face-up game. He has OK moves around the bucket, but everyone already knows what to expect. Shaq couldn’t shoot outside of the paint to save his life, but his jump-hook was MEAN.

    How can anyone compare Dwight Howard to David Robinson? Please be more RESPECTFUL when talking about The Admiral. If you are looking to compare Howard to someone from the 90′s, try Arvydas Sabonis.
