For Old Time’s Sake: The Admiral

David Robinson is the greatest player to ever come through the Armed Forces and is also one of the best centers in NBA history. Incredibly productive, efficient, MASSIVE, and a great attitude are a few of the things that come to mind when thinking of The Admiral. He deserved that ’99 championship with Timmy D as much as anybody in the league and was really a model professional athlete. His nike commercials were EPIC. See Below.

    omg that commercial is hilarious

  • CheeseWhiz

    Dwight Howard of the 90′s

  • James aka…

His athleticism set him apart. before his back issues, he was easily the fastest big in the league.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Cawford

    @CheeseWhiz:

Are you seeing the ball handling, shooting, and offensive moves in the video?

Dwight would be lucky to EVER develop those.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

damn all that athleticism is on a top 2-guard level in the body of a center. I’d say all those back injuries robbed us from witnessing Dave’s finest years, but he got that ring in the end so I’m ok with it

  • Overtime

Awesome player, awesome character. Always great to see him at the Spurs games after he retired.
    @ Cheesewhizz…have you ever..
    A) Seen David Robinson?
    B) Seen Dwight Howard?
    Apprently not.

  • logues

ya i dont think dwight woulda been able to steal the ball and then dribble up the whole court as fast as a 2 guard, sidestep mj and throw down. that play was awesome

  • logues

o, and he was dribbling off of his opposite hand the whole time.

  • badboi

    BICEPS!!!!

  • Overtime

You can see in the video how fast he sprinted, quicker than pretty much everyone on the court

  • tavoris

Even tho Olajuwon ate his lunch, The Admiral was still one of the best two-way players the game has ever seen.

  • larrylegend

    bla bla…95 Playoffs, hou-sa, that’s all.

  • tavoris

plus, he dropped 71 in a game. only 4 players have scored more.

  • http://thacorner.net/forums Kevin

One of the most athletically gifted big men ever. Being from San Antonio, David was one of the best things to happen to this city.

  • Ronald

    @Cheesewhizz: You’re an idiot.
The day D-How scored 70+ points a game the day you can call him the new David Robinson. And you wont find D-Rob trying to get it on with a pornstar.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

Great player and class act both on and off the court. He didn’t do a lot of mean mugging, trash talking or dancing etc, just did his job. He was everything you would want out of a player/center, he could rebound, defend and score. If he was in a bigger market, he would likely have gotten even more recognition as one of the top C’s ever.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Ya know, for all the props certain players get for “being real”, D-Rob doesn’t get enough credit. Dude was always real and true to his values an beliefs. He was a true class act and a phenominal center. You can’t really blame him for getting killed by The Dream, everyone else in the league got killed by him too.

  • riggs

only thing dwight resembles of the admiral is that he can dunk.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

If Dwight had 1/2 the handles and offensive repitoire that D-Rob had he’d be head and shoulders above the rest of the centers in todays league. Defensively they’re somewhat comparable.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

My favorite center of all time. Don’t get it twisted, I’m not saying I think he’s the best of all time, even in his own era Olajuwan used to bust his a** in the early to mid-90′s, and then Shaq proceeded to do the same thing later in his career, but he was still my personal favorite cause dude was a beast, and I loved the way he carried himself off the court. I know he took a lot of heat for having zero street cred, but I didn’t give a damn about that. Half the time people who care about street cred are from lily-white suburbs anyways. Also, dude served in the military, which I can definitely stand up and applaud.

  • http://www.slamonline.com JL

he is basically twice the player that dhow is. defense is on par, and probably even better, but offensively he was very strong too. not to mention even faster.

  • The Philosopher

He was better than Wilt too.

  • http://aol.com Run’N'Gun219

he had the coldest box in the league. and matter of fact he is still rocking his box. lol

  • teebee!!

question: what player today reminds you of david robinson? anyone? i cant think of anyone…the man was truly one of a kind…theres no one in the NBA today that i can look at and say …”you know what?, that dude reminds me of david robinson a little bit”…

  • total scrotal implosion

Dammit sneezy! U dont know anything do you? U make a horrible mistake in all of these. Dude, he won two titles, 99 and 03. U should be fired, all u do is imbed yinka dare mixes, and act like u know what ur talkn about, while failing

  • KB

lookin at him just makes the fact that dwight howards offensive game has not developed a shame cause physically and defensively they are identical. did you see him handle rock and shoot jumpers like its nothin. dwight should be ashamed

  • http://slamonline.com Schneezy

@ total… I Love you too, bro. And yes, I do not know anything about basketball and only post Yinka Dare mixes for my own enjoyment so I can read beautiful commentary from those like you. I should be fired and all I do is Fail Fail Fail Fail Fail.

    Love,
    Schneezy

  • JTaylor21

The Admiral would drop 50 on DHow on any given day and would also block every one of those ugly hooks DHow fabricates while robbing his pocket when he tries to drive past him. I got love for DHow but DRob would take his breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and midnight snack money.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

You know what? Robinson is a bit underrated. I think that’s because in the pantheon of GREAT CENTERS, he’s usually over looked (everyone thinks Kareem, Chamberlain, Shaq, Russell, Hakeem, Malone) but honestly? The centers in NBA history have been so dominate that Robinson is still really high on the pantheon of great PLAYERS.
Dude could run the floor, was incredibly fast and powerful, nice handles, ludicrous defense (especially on the help side), underrated passing, underrated back to the basket skills. Everyone is saying Dwight Howard with offense, I’d say Amare Stoudemire with ludicrous defense and some post moves.
Check out the dude’s stats from 1992:
    23.3 ppg, 12.2 rpg, 2.7 apg, 2.3 spg, 4.5 bpg on 55% shooting
    or 1994:
    29.8 ppg, 11 rpg, 4.8 apg, 1.7 spg, 3.3 bpg on 57% shooting
Crazy numbers! Super well rounded. We need another center like Robinson!

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Wow, those numbers are insane! 4.5 bpg is crazy and 4.8 apg for a center is unheard of. I think he can defeinitely be in the debate with the all time greats, especially if he had stayed healthy and won a ring or two before TD came along.

  • bo

David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patric Ewing, Zo Mourning, Shaqalicious in no particular order were all legends, with their own styles, strengths and weaknesses, unlike the big men of today who bring tears to my eyes with their lack of skill, technique, especially Dwight who has a body of a god, but skill and technique of a washing machine.
Oh ye, and D.Rob looks better then Dwight, plus he was 4 cm taller…

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

@Sneezy 433: Lmao!!! Ur d man bro, keep on doin dah good job.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

@Sneezy: Thanx 4 all these cool o’ skool remembrances u’ve been given us all summer long.

  • Robb

@Cheesewhizz… Forget it…too dumb to comment

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

The only two things Howard has in common with Robinson is that both are ripped as hell and both are great rebounders and shotblockers, but even there they differ because Robinson blocked shots with the intention of turning possesion over to his team, a la Bill Russell, where as Dwight is more of a “I’ma spike that weak stuff into the third row!” kind of dude.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

    cosign Enigmatic…

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I would take David Robinson over Shaq for an entire career. Shaq had 5 great years and that is it in the NBA. David Robinson is only player in NBA history to lead the NBA in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots, and win NBA MVP, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year in his career. His career was longer and he played DEFENSE. BOOK IT!!!

  • Coney Islander

David Robinson is to Dwight Howard what Michael Jordan is to Kobe Bryant, the final products and the works in progress.

  • Sam

I dont think ive ever seen howard beat everyone down the court dribbling to dunk the ball home. or catch up to a guard to block a break away dunk. Robinson was the man

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

    ^^^^^
The Seed… Shaq had a couple of great years in the Magic, he definitely had more than five GREAT NBA seasons, although in fairness his dominance with the Magic was different from his dominance with the Lakers (ie speed vs power).
Robinson, on the other hand, really only had seven dominant seasons before he got hurt. I really can’t see how you think Robinson dominated longer than Shaq dominated.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

And you know, I might get killed for saying this, but Robinson doesn’t have the LIFT Dwight has… but christ, Robinson has incredible hangtime that Dwight really doesn’t have. That layup he made while avoiding Michael was purely because he was able to hang in the air and lay it up. Centers just don’t have the hang because of their weight. I don’t even know how in the world Robinson has it.

  • Tony

    lets see a Hakeem clip

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    Jukai
Shaq had some good years with the Magic, but he was not seen as the best center then. Hakeem was and he killed him in Finals. Shaq best years was the four year span with the Lakers Period. David Robinson had a more rounded game so he could play defense, rebound, steal and pass. If you compare their careers year by year you would understand my view point. Shaq is the most overrated player in NBA history, because he could have been so much more. One NBA MVP, Only 4 rings, PLayed for 5 teams and now even Lisa Leslie is killing him on LA talk radio saying he should not be in Lakers Hall of Fame, because has now jumped ship to much to catch Kobe. David’s career is better and just compare on your own. BOOK IT!!

  • http://twitter.com/darrellma dma

Rod Strickland sighting! That’s what we need here

  • JTaylor21

Come on, just when I thought that I’ve heard every stupid comments there is, the SEEDS to no ones surprise tops it. Shaqs the MOST overrated player in History? WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!!!! I know you laker/kobetards hate the dude for him not kobe carrying LA to 3 straight dominating chips but u guys don’t have to try and shamefully fail to put down what one of the games greatest to ever lace up a pair of sneakers did. How many players won 3 straight Finals MVP in the same dominating and devastating manner that Shaq did. There’s nobody in their right mind even crazy people that would pick DRob or say that DRob had a better career than Shaq.

  • hammer

Oh my god! Sum1 just HAD 2 mention howard right!? And have the audacity 2 compare him 2 the admiral! @cheesewhiz:Get the f**k out of here w/dwight! How the hell do u c the admiral and envision howard? Watch sum admiral and stop pissing people off!

  • hammer

    @dma 9:08 comment. Completely agree w/u

  • tavoris

Jukai-I don’t know…Robinson trailing on the break was a thing of beauty…they threw him the ball, and the opposing team SCATTERED like roaches. Howard is an elite athlete, but it’s slightly exaggerated because there aren’t any other elite athletes at his position.

  • hammer

Don’t get it twisted like keith sweat tho k. I don’t hate dwight. It not his fault he’s playing n lesser comp than when #50 played. I just hate it that people put him on this pedestal as if he is gr8 player when n fact, plop dwight n the mid 90′s nba,he b riding bench probably behind bryant”big country” reeves. And no that’s not a joke. Well…maybe a lil. Anyways,u get the jist of it
