For Old Time’s Sake: AI Breaks Antonio Daniels…Twice

I remember watching this live and laughing out loud. Granted, getting smoked by Allen Iverson was almost a right of passage for anybody guarding him…but twice…in one play. That just doesn’t happen very often. It wasn’t even his signature cross and although in real time it doesn’t look that crazy, when you watch in slow motion and see Daniels try to get up… yeah, you feel for the dude. Like MJ, Vince, plenty of guys…AI has highlights for days. SLAM may be dropping an AI special in the next few months… but you didn’t hear it from me.

Yepp, I remember laughing pretty loud at this as well. Lol. How’s Antonio Daniels doing lately? I mean, he showed promise when he played with Ridnour in Seattle (?), but then when he went to Washington he didn’t do much. Where’s he now?

  • JTaylor21

Damn AI, that’s not the definition of brotherly love.

  • http://screwjams.tumblr.com cramzy

    cold-blooded (rick james voice)

  • http://dez@nba.com dez

drove him straight thru the floor. ya aint right, AI. ya aint right.

  • james

lol damn he fell while tryna get up

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

woooah best cross over ever! phillie need to retire his jersey and put a statue in front of the stadium doing a crossover!

  • james

damn they were showin that game 1 in the 2001 NBA FINALS on nbatv yesterday. Allen Iverson was straight killin at staples center in the FINALS! this dude was so good man he use to will those 76er teams to victories

  • hammer

Likw mobb deep say “U aint a crook son. U just a shook one”

  • Darius

i remember watchin this live. Best crossover I’ve ever seen. We’ll miss u if u go 2 China A.I

  • smitty

love A.I. sad to see them blackball him from the league like this. He still can get you buckets off the bench nd I also think he can still start for a few of the lousy squads in the league as well. Finally love watching this and what many dont remember is daniels gave iverson a bit of his own medicine in the same game had iverson on skates too. lol although it was not nearly what he did to antonio. good day all and cant wait to see A.I. put in the hall of fame one day that will be nice.

  • rob stewart

SLAM u gotta do a special Iverson only issue.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

wow, now thats the very defenition of crossing somebody over, dude was crabin all ova the floor…we´ll miss Iverson

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

gaurds are dime a dozen in the league right now…and most of them don’t have the issues that he does, so why get him? he’s not a 20 ppg guy anymore.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

sick video though…that’s just a nasty crossover

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Game 1 of the 2001 Finals remains my favorite game of all time. That is all.

  • JTaylor21

Rob stewart is right, AI was the First and Last of a dying breed, he deserves a special SLAM issue.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

It’s not entirely my call, but I’d be honored to work on an all-AI issue.

  • The Philosopher

Off the dribble, Allen Iverson is…
    The G.O.A.T.

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

don’t know about that but he revolutionized ballhandling for sure. Pistol Pete before him.

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

  • http://dsjkfl.com Jukai

He never knew how to play the game when he got older, but god damn, he could do it by himself when he was young. Really. He could do it by himself.

  • JTaylor21

The Philo is right, dude was the best ever off the dribble and was downright unguardable when he did that move. Also Pistol Pete was cool but he ain’t fuc*ing with AI when it comes to ballhandling.

  • rob stewart

Holla at me, I would love to contribute from a fans perspective. I had the braids, headband, shoes, RBK wavecap, crossover and all in attempt to be like Iverson. People even made fun of me because I followed him so much. I even contributed an Iverson poem that was printed in the very Slam magazine pictured above. rs2rs2rs2@hotmail.com

  • hangtime Hec

    MY LEG!!

  • http://dsjkfl.com Jukai

I’d certainly cop an AI issue. I was never an AI fan, but my appreciation for AI has risen since he’s left the league. I miss him. I miss him dropping 45 every day, him going one-on-five and winning games. He never learned to play as an old guy, but if you saw him as a young adult tearing up the league, you realize why he never learned that way… he easily coulda won a championship alone. Just playing his way, going 1-on-5 and dropping dimes off to guys if they were in a position to score. Kobe plays that way, Wade plays that way. It’s wrong to criticize it.
Great top-10 all time shooting guard.

  • JoeMaMa

didn’t Daniels get him right back the next play? I know Daniels made Iverson fall in the same game. That should be shown too….

  • chazz michael michaels

Yes I Love AI still and hope he doesnt go to China, the NBA needs AI

  • hammer

In the words of killer mike “Like iverson. Smallest thing on the team but the livest one.” Tuff as can be. Mainained elite player status while playing thru countless injuries. I miss him like hell. I wish the L had let AI go out on his terms. Not theirs by black balling him. After everythin AI has one 4 the nba. Sacrificing his body, spirit and heart 4 the game and this how they repay him!? Reminds me of donnie brasco. Tho AI got a better check than donnies $500. An nba legend kicked 2 the curb. Like nas says “Lifes a b***h”

  • http://slamonline.com Schneezy

fair enough. both sides are now available. AI did fall, yes, but Daniels fell….TWICE.

  • Overtime

Also, really really looks like Daniels misses the layp after AI falls

  • rob stewart

I never noticed AD crossed him right back. It was off of a difficult close-out but it still counts

  • thalilbigkahuna

^^ Overtime is right, it looks like Daniels didn’t even hit the rim on that layup. Probably why the “other side” is never shown.

  • Eric E

Maaan that was how Iron Mike dropped Trevor Berbick lol. AI was the only “lil man” in the league that was never treated like a little man playing amongst the trees. Hell I watched him cross MJ when he was a rook right after telling Mike he couldnt hang with him. Pound for Pound one of the greatest. Really yall AI was a small dude. Hey anyone heard from Tyron Lue? Bet he got an AI story to tell. Yuk Yuk

  • PapaBearATL

Ball fake, bad close out, take it to the hole < Off the dribble, double cross and leave you laying in the lane. Even though they both hit the floor.

  • Kadavour

AI popularized it, but Steve Francis had the most vicious crossover in the L. I’m not arguing how technically sound it was, or how legal it was to perform in-game, I’m just saying that it was more deadly than AI’s.

  • http://deleted KH10

Grant Hill had the simplest and most lethal cross i have ever seen, no playing around, just left to right and then boom, AI’s is more fun though.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

looks like iverson closed out and slipped, to be honest.

  • ClydeSays

Sick. But at least Daniels got him back. The Wiz never heard of Help Defense….

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

since ai is your favorite player, check “pennyccw”‘s channel on youtube. it’s dedicated to ai, and serves as a pretty good ai (online) encyclopedia. even the descriptions in the videos are articles taken at the time

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick NotebookNick

  • http://twitter.com/pdxgaybball dma

how does a guy miss a layup that badly? he must have wet himself when he saw ai go down.

  • tavoris

hilarious to see so many backhanded compliments to this mix.
I felt bad for AD. I always kinda liked him for all he overcame to get to the L.

  • NJ4Life

@KH10, way to many people overlook Grant’s game when he was younger. Having said that, I think the other ROY from 94′s got the sweetest cross. JKidd used to do that hesitation on the break where you thought he was sprinting, he hesitated for a half second, then BLEW by his man at actual sprint-speed. Might as well have tried guarding him with a statue.

  • Bryan

Do we really need MORE AI in slam? What else can you guys say about the guy you haven’t already? Doing a feature issue on a washed up bum who quit on both the Pistons and the Grizz seems like a waste of time anyway. Maybe 10 years ago? I understand this is one of slams ‘guys’ that they are always gonna get a hard on for but come on.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

I hope that AI issue comes out, damn he was quick I hate to see him end his career in China it is sad that he is getting black balled by the league now, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a memo passed to GM’s and Execs to stay away from AI…. he will revolutionize basketball in China though.

  • AfroThunder

Y’all shoulda done Iverson on the other side of the Kobe issue instead of lebron

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ Actually, yeah… I agree with AfroThunder. That would have made the most sense, in my opinion. Same draft class, both former MVPs, both SLAM poster boys (that’s a compliment). While I like LeBron and enjoyed that issue, at this point in his career it isn’t justified giving him a special issue and not one to AI. However, an entire AI-dedicated issue would be really something special for the SLAM repertoire.

  • Bryan

As much as I hate Lebron. He has already accomplished way more than AI did 7 years in.

Also, whats all this blackballed nonsense? Would you hire a guy who either doesn’t show up to work, flat out refuses to work, or makes up excuses to get out of work. The rumored drinking and gambling problems among other personal issues don’t help either. On top of that he is a low character guy who is going to want the ball in his hands and try to be the man…if i’m a GM i wouldn’t even think about it. I’d laugh at the thought

  • http://www.slamonline.com Todd Spehr

Iverson finished his play, Daniels didn’t.

  • $am

Man, I miss the days of AI and Stevie Franchise. D-Rose, CP3 and these new cats just don’t have the entertainment value to their games that these guys had. The new generation needs to step it up!

  • tavoris

Bryan-what EXACTLY has Lebron accomplished in his first 7 years in the L that Iverson didn’t in the same time span?

  • Young C

    2 time MVP for one
    Olympic Gold medalist for another
    All-Defensive Team for yet another
…just off the top of my head
