For Old Time’s Sake: Gary Payton

THE GLOVE is undoubtedly one of the greatest guards and defensive players of all time. He had an incredible post game for a point guard, often abusing his smaller PG counterparts and was fearless on both ends of the court. He and Shawn Kemp led the Sonics to the ’96 Finals and represented the last great generation of pro hoops in Seattle. Payton was the NBA DPOY in ’96, a 9x All Star, 9x All-Defensive First team, and won a title with Miami in 2006. He was also one of the game’s greatest/most irritating trash talkers and with this came the third-most technical fouls in NBA history. Payton holds 2 Olympic Gold Medals, is 3rd on the all-time NBA steals list, and the only player in NBA history with 20k points, 5k boards, 8k assists, and 2k steals. I could go on all day about GP. Enjoy the vid by Kblaze.

blaze! we had quite a few ball arguments over at ish

  • thegggfunk

the glove had attitude straight up

  • tavoris

loved his game…never flashy, but did what he wanted on the court against anybody.

  • http://screwjams.tumblr.com cramzy

Glove! Reignman! Detlef! Green and yellow unis! The zippers on the nikes! I miss the 90′s…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    1. Love the intro to the vid. Perfect.
    2. Gary Payton’s only outstanding physical attribute was quickness, and he wasn’t even the quickest of his generation. He didn’t have outstanding hops or size, but he still overwhelmed peopl on defense.
    3. I love his attitude on the court. Russell Westbrook should be watching GP tape, and deciding this is where he wants to be as a defender and leader. Offensively, Westbrook has the physical talents to surpass Payton if he puts in the kind of work Payton put in to develop his shot.
    4. Remember Payton was initially consider a bit of a bust when he first came into the league, he built his career from the ground up.
    5. I love the back down to the baseline spin. Perfect old man move, using change of pace and balance.
    6. Probably the most underrated and underappreciated guard of his era.

Excellent. I told you guys the other day that we had a good one coming today. My love for Mark Jackson was well stated here the other day…but that doesn’t mean I don’t have so much respect for GP as well. What a bad MFer. Having the soundtrack be Pharcyde is just an added bonus. Another great one, Schneezy!

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

And again, great comments from Allenp. Allen, you oughta do a piece for us about the PGs of the 80s and 90s…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Ben, I would be talking about of butt to a certain extent since I was only born in 1980… But, if you want me to write something, holla at me at ajpowell75@yahoo.com.

  • Ali

Oak-Town Cali’s Finest! From 93-02 he was a BEAST for Seattle. Other PG and SG hated to be matched up with this dude, he was the ultimate get in your face, under your skin, cocky floor general, but backed up everything on both ends of the court. Damn Jordan and Co. kept alot of HOFers from getting rings, Hahaha…..

  • http://deleted KH10

I forgot about the fake back you down, baseline spin move, why does no one else use that? GP was the man, deserved that ring in 06 too.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

    just hit you allen, thanks

    Oak-Town Cali’s Finest!!!

Would be fitting to have Shawn Kemp up next on “for old time’s sake”…! Make it happen

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick NotebookNick

I loved GP’s game, too. Definitely someone I looked up to growing up. Most of his sneakers were fire too! I wish I could go back to the future to pick up some of those. . .

  • Tom

I love that Payton almost never dunks in games, but the one time he did was after picking MJ’s pocket and then he follows up the dunk with a stare down. Classic GP!! Great choice.

  • http://soundcloud.com/boy-sanchez Boy Sanchez

Are we still talking about AI’s crossover on MJ?? Gary Payton was embarrassing him for years!!

  • Tom

Ben, you guys took a lot of heat for that Master P cover. I think it perfectly suited GP’s personality though.

  • Fat Lever

My favorite player ever! Never took anything from anyone. The fact that he threw practically perfect alley-oop passes is an understated trait of his. I think I remember one where he threw one to Kemp underhanded from behind the 3pt line. Doesn’t hurt when you have Kemp on the receiving end either though.

  • http://aol.com Run’N'Gun219

you knew he was into the game when his lower jaw started to pertrude like the preditor. best defensive pg ever in my opion. and him and cassell mastered the pg post up game. And he use to hang out with E-40 and Murton Hanks so that made him bad ass. lol

  • Yann Blavec

I guess it’s atribe called quest but what’s the name of the music ?

    ^ THE HYROGLYPHICS

  • WolfNast

    90′s!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • abaci

No run’n'gun its not HIEROGLYPHICS. Like Ben said its Pharcyde. Gary Payton is the man! Hands down my favorite ball player. I hope i can attend his retirement ceremony Seattle HAS to have for him. He is a top ten PG of all time. And if you dont think so then you are mistaken. I love the fact that he is the only PG to win defensive player of the year.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

A top 5 personal favorite of mine…he was tough as nails and didn’t take ish from anyone. I really loved his game.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

My favorite player in the NBA for a long, long time..

  • Martey

When that gum chewing started getting wider and wider you know he was on a roll. Then came the trash talk. Payton and Jason Kidd has some wars too back in the days. Apparently the size of his hands were larger than they were supposed to be and that made it easier for him to defend. Great player

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I’m going to shoot you something today, Ben.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

the layup king! i love that one of the only times he dunks was on mj after he stripped him

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

payton and kemp were the cooler version of stockton malone. speaking of kemp, kblaze makes dope videos, but kemp was noticeably missing from this video. a bunch of clips of assists to vin baker?! CMON!

  • flipnoyce

If I were to make a starting five from players from then and now. It would still be
    pg- payton
    sg- jordan
    sf- pippen
    pf- kemp
c- a young Shag from the Orlando days when he could still run.

  • teebee!!

i hated vin baker. shout out to Hershey Hawkins.

  • hammer

it was about damn time to do a FOTS with Gary Payton … my favorite player ever!!! … and I still can’t remember who was the one writing a piece on slam as a rap about Payton, someone remembers?? and it would be great if I can find that article again

  • hammer

@ runngun. Its not the hyroglyphics, its the pharcyde’s “The hustle”. Classic track!

  • Papa Smurf

I was expecting Too Short, but Pharcyde was fitting too.

  • JTaylor21

GP’s an all-time great and the 2nd best perimeter defender of all-time behind Scottie but I still will take JKidd over him. Nothing against GP but Kidd is just the BETTER point guard and the most underrated in NBA history.

  • http://aol.com Run’N'Gun219

jtaylor i see where u coming from and i might take kidd over payton too. (might) but they are so different. GP best defensive pg ever. and to me Kidd has the best court vision and leadership as a pg of my generation. but they both knew how th run they team

  • http://aol.com Run’N'Gun219

and my bad peeps its pharcyde and not hyroglyphics…

  • http://n/a d.j.

please do the for old times sake vlade divac… and to those of you about to start talking trash thinking he doesn’t deserve it you are on this website for the wrong reasons and dont know true basketball…

  • larrylegend

    still kidd>gp
can i have a FOTS of rodney rodgers? would be great :-)

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Gary Payton is the the greatest defensive point guard ever. The thing I like about Gary is that he improved his game over time. I remember him just being another player, then he busted out one year and kept it up. Payton gets lost in the shuffle with great point guards, but I would take him over alot of point guards then and now, mainly because he could play defense which wins games get you 20 points and about 5 rebs and 7 assists. Payton made defense fun and I still state that the Sonics was the better team that year against the Bulls, but the BUlls pulled it out. BOOK IT!!!

  • Papa Smurf

I like the idea of a Vlade FOTS. Never would have thought of it myself, but it might be pretty good. Dude knew how to play. Kind of guy I love to play with.

  • JTaylor21

@The seed, you’re right about GP being the best defensive point of all-time and the 96 sonics being better than the bulls but one of the BIGGEST reasons why the sonics lost was due to GPs play. He struggled mightily thought the series and never dominated or controlled the game, if he had a least a good series the sonics might have won the finals. SKemp did his part to keep the sonics in it and a good series by GP would’ve put them over the top.

  • hammer

Sonics better than bulls!? Gms 1 and 2 n chi that year bulls pulled out those w’s cuz they knew how 2 close out those type of close gms. They played better down the stretch than seattle. And gm 3 @ key arena, bulls demolished them 2 go up 3-0 n the series. Give sonics credit tho by not letting down and winning both gms 4 and 5 n convincing fashion. Those 2 gms remain 4 me the worst 2 gms I have ever seen the bulls dynasty play. I didn’t know who those bulld were @ all those 2 gms. Yelling @ each other, missing defense assignments, letting nobodys like scheffler and brickowski contribute some good minutes off the bench. I’d rather 4get those 2 gms. My stomach hurts now. Seattle played good, but bulls were the better and most deserving team 2 win. I mean r u gonna say that the jazz and blazers were better than the bulls as well just cuz they played chi tuff and were good defensive teams?

  • The Philosopher

    Shout out to LLoyd Free.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

@JTaylor You are right, GP play was off and he was one of the reasons that lost and Kemp did do his thing. As a Bulls fan back then, I thought the Sonics were going to win 4 straight games, because like the @HAMMER said, I have never seen the BULLS with MJ get beat that bad. That’s why I feel the Sonics underachieved @HAMMER. Don’t get me started on the Jazz, they lost to the Bulls twice, But I would bet on that team against any team that have won the NBA Finals since 1998, except a couple of the Lakers teams, 05 Spurs team and 08 Boston team. BOOK IT!!!

  • hammer

N no way am I lessening the jazz. The jazz were equal 2 the bulls n many ways and n my mind posed more of a threat than any team bulls faced n the finals, especially 98. That year bulls had a tuff, grueling 7 gm ecf showdown w/indi. Bulls were very fortunate 2 have home court advantage n that series. Both teams won all their home gms. So the bulls were already exhausted heading n2 the finals against the jazz. But one thing that was motivation 4 chi was that it was gonna b their last gms 2gether. So they felt that they HAD 2 win it all. They played just good enuff 2 hold off the jazz

  • Holy Karron

Madd love for GP him and Kemp was on point back in the 90′s

  • YourMaster

    Worst song I’ve ever heard.

  • JTaylor21

@The seed, I also don’t know why it took so long for George Karl to put GP on MJ instead of waiting to about the 3rd game. MJ had one of the worst 4 gms stretch of his playoff career with GP guarding him and would’ve at least given the sonics are better chance of winning. I’m not saying that GP could have shutdown MJ before all the MJ nutjobs start attacking me but if anyone can at least contain MJ it’s GP.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

One of my favorite players ever. Don’t forget that clutch jumper in Miami, too.

  • arjae828

love how dude tried to hit GP w/ the in and out and GP straight laughed at him ! also, move he put on cuttino mobley in the post was sick. and the up and under then finish over rodman w/ the left. crazy !!!

  • arjae828

another thing…a lot of these fots’s got ppl schoolin’ mj as the main highlight. thas how you know m.j. was the man. people pull a move off on him and they get a name.
