For Old Time’s Sake: Kobe Bryant – High School

We all know Kobe Bryant was nasty in high school @ Lower Merion. Lottery picks generally fall under the “nasty” category especially when all an NBA team is going off of is high school games where opposing PGs are under 6 feet and barely crack 150 lbs (maybe a few HS All Star camps as well). Gotta be pretty special to warrant a look from an NBA team let alone a draft selection. In this case it was the Hornets who believed in Bryant’s ability…. but believed in Vlade Divac a bit more. Would the Hornets still be in Charlotte if Bryant hadn’t been traded to LA for Vlade? Would Kobe be anywhere near the player he is today with the same notoriety? Would he have any rings? Who knows.

This video shows Kobe torching the competition at midnight madness in ’94 (he was drafted in ’96) and putting up highlight after highlight. Shout out to SLAMonline editor Ryne Nelson for bringing the video to my attention and thanks to Ballin365.com for putting the vid together.

I have stated this many times, If Kobe is drafted by the Hornets and Jerry West doesn’t swindle them Charlotte never leaves my state of North Carolina. Trust me, we would have been all behind him and he would have to me taken the MJ road to success. Losing seasons, putting up great numbers, until he gets a great complimentary player in his 5th or 6th year or with him team excels with him coming into his own in year 3. Then he would challenge for the rings each year. Kobe always had the determination to be the best. Kobe also did not go to a great situation in LA either. He was on a team with great players already established. A lot of people thought Eddie Jones was better than Kobe and Del Harris the coach wasn’t a big fan of Kobe. Kobe had to work his way off the bench, prove himself and then establish himself with a arrogant Center who didn’t want boy wonder taking away from his shine. Kobe is an all time great and can move up with more rings and Finals MVP to challenge MJ. Kobe would to me with his passion and drive still would have gotten at least 3 or 4 rings to me, because he would have demanded a trade eventually or Hornets from having a bad record would have eventually drafted a talented player. Hornets had a few pieces at the time, so maybe Kobe comes in and helps them become playoff contenders each year then leading them to promise land in year 4 or 5. Kobe to some is the luckiest player ever, because of some of the players he have played with but, why doesn’t Magic, Shaq, Larry, and MJ get that same kind of negative attention to. Who cares, Kobe has proven everyone wrong and will get the chance to tie MJ this year with six rings. That’s his focus and that deserves a BOOK IT!!!

    The Prologue to Greatness…

  • rich

16 months or years .. seriously too cool for school

  • Deon

He looks the same as he does now! He’s been that good since he was 14 probably! Amazing!

  • Jang

Grown man moves…at the age of 16…he was certainly “pro” ready…

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/olybb/news/story?id=5493184 Jackie Moon

Even then he was taking high degree of difficulty shots.

  • Jay c

    The orgin of the enemy…

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I thought he claimed he wore #24 in high school?? Looks like #32 to me.. Maybe he will switch jersey #s again in the pros to compete with Bron’s Heat jersey sales…

  • Fat Lever

He wore 33 in HS. Forget the dunks, those finesse layups were nice.

  • Sean

Kobe had the full compliment of skills back in high school, he’s not like most of today’s “great” high-school players who simply rely on their advanced athleticism to dominate the competition. He had the handles, the shooting stroke, he was the full package. I’m not even a Kobe fan but man that video was sick.

  • Jdubbs

Man I wish Kobe had done at least one year of college. Those highlights would be so cool.

  • rmac

apparently he won in a pick up game against brian shaw when he was 12!

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

Who cares about tying MJ in rings? What does that do? Horry has more rings still.

  • ouzzle

Kobe was the best highschool hooper ever. skill wise defense, shooting touch, unmatched. 94 just turned 16, maybe 15, crazy

Did he really put it between his legs in a game?

  • http://dsfjklf.com Jukai

Man, I’m no Kobe fan, but lord does Kobe have game

  • JTaylor21

Kobe looking like Magic, HAA HAA HAA that will never ever happen in a trillion years. Also HSBron >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>HSkobe, today it’s more like Pro-Bron>Pro-Kobe.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

Jtaylor: How can you watch a highlight tape like that and still hate………Give respect when respect is due.

  • Robb

@JTaylor21 are you Mo Williams??? Your love for Lebron is unparalleled

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Who is he playing against? I would have hard fouled the piss out of him for all that trickery.

  • tavoris

@Allenp-me too, man. It kinda looked like everybody else was just standing on the court so it wouldn’t look like he was just playing by himself

  • tavoris

kinda like the Raptors did afew years ago when he dropped 81

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Kobes jersey number change was a sham and everyone knows the real reason

  • http://Slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    Man, that was RIDICULOUS…

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Lol…that talented bastard was just toying with dudes. You want to let your game do the talking…but when the talent disparity is that great and he’s out there straight clowning your team, you gotta try a hard foul or two…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign everyone about the hard fouls… D@mn, Kobe had the spin-to-the-fadeaway as a teenager. As a fan of the game I have to give this props.

  • KB2412345

geez is Jtay still taking it from bron. no talky in a while. slurp slurp, gulp. should be back soon…

  • Favio

Ahhh Kobz…. The Greatest of our generation

  • PlanetAsia14

As you said Schneezy, that was “nasty” indeed.

  • The Wize

was watching some kb8 last night, that ridiculous scoring season droppin’ 50s like it ain’t nuthin’, 62 in 3 quarters – outscored the entire opposing team! 81?! Such jokes.

  • Shanwow

KB was exactly the same then as he is now, flashy, arrogant, self superior, selfish etc.the degree of difficulty was high for some of that stuff but I mean really..who cares. A screen if set at the right time would`ve been hysterical… its nice just thinking about it.

  • http://slamonline.com the professor

vintage kobe..attacking the lane with no regard for human life…Go kobe!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Saviour

Have to put a big SHOUT OUT to the few haters posting on here, hiding behind your monitor screens in your dead-end jobs moaning about which number he wore in high-school and how everyone is riding him.

Welcome to Slamonline, a basketball site, where amazing basketball is appreciated and discussed.

Oh and I take 2 sugars in my sea, scrubs.

  • TXLA

Yeah those highlights were straight dumb!

Kobe been gettin it in since way back!

Didnt he hit the league at 17? So 94 he would have been 15?

  • SpaceJam

Hey can we get some afro Kobe in hear. Especially that crossover and dunk @ UNLV
