For Old Time’s Sake: Nick Van Exel

Nick the Quick. Where to begin with this (bear)cat…. He was drafted 37th overall in the 2nd round by the LA Lakers in ’93 during their “rebuilding” phase (didn’t know the Lakeshow had those). He and Eddie Jones helped lead the Lakers to the playoffs in ’95 and by ’98 Van Exel was an NBA All Star. Known for his quickness and flashy style, he was a crowd favorite and difficult to defend. He pulled off passes and shots that I have yet to see any other player execute in the last 15 years…you’ll see in the video. After issues with teammates/coaches, Van Exel was traded to Denver in ’98 and went on to play for Dallas, Golden State, Portland and San Antonio. He currently sits at 11th all time in NBA 3-point field goals made and finished his career with these averages: 14.4 pts, 6.6 asts, 1.7 3pt.

  • Martey

He and Eddie Jones were one of my favorite backcourts of the 90s. When he started beefin with Del Harris that signaled the end, even though he also played great in Denver. I was just wondering when Nick the Quick was going to get a FOTS

  • unrel

he was my favorite PG back then.. quick was nice..

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    A bad man…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

That was some horrible music on that mix. Man, my ears are bleeding. Nick’s career averages are impressive.

    MAMA there goes that man!!

  • abaci

They should have added the clip of him throwing a television monitor onto the the court.

  • hammer

    FINALLY! Thanx slam

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

There was a time when I couldn’t choose who I liked more, Nick or Sam Cassell….two bad dudes. It was like choosing between Kenny Anderson and Rod Strickland……speaking of, Schneezy, can you hook that one up…Hot Rod?

  • Piggy

And he saved Dallas from the biggest would be collapse against the Blazers.

  • bambe

incredible in 03 playoffs with the mavs

  • hammer

1 of my fav pg back n the day. What COULDN’T van excellent do!? He had such a quick 1st step a la iverson, could penetr8 and breakdown a defense like few could, score, dish, constantly top 5 pg n assist/turnover ratio, and clutch as hell! He wanted the rock n clutch time. And he would deliver. Mos def 1 of the greatest clutch shooters n league history! Brought swag and ‘tude 2 the lakers during those yrs

  • hammer

I used 2 luv it when nick would make a big shot and he would do that shoulder shrug w/his arms swaying back and forth. Reminds me of good times when me and my homies would ball and I would bust that out. It PAINS me 2 c that matt barnes will b rocking that #9 jersey and I’m not even a laker fan. Tsk tsk

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Theoretically, who invented the Big Balls dance….Nick or Sam?

  • D12FSU

@Robb, when watching this video it reminded me a lot of the things brandon jennings does and can do

  • http://Myspace Shanoooooo

    San Jac stand up !!!

  • http://shaq_attaq@msn.com kobesBESTfriend

i liked when he would go 2 the freethrow line and shoot like 5 ft back…quick was a beast!!!i still think the Lakers would have won the 99 title if jerry west hadnt made the worst trade he’s ever done and traded him 4 Battie and Lue

  • dar

Too bad the vid doesn’t show all the clutch shots he hit for the lakeshow..

  • dar

@D12FSU, Stephen Currys play reminds me more of Van Exel than Jennings… It’s just that Curry isn’t left handed.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Nick Van Exel was a 40 percent shooter for his career, but he seemed better than that. Weird.

  • Tom

Dope link Schneezy!!! I’ve been waiting on this one. The current player who reminds me most of van exel actually………Ginoblii!!, their games are almost identical. I say for the next FOTS we go for The Rock, Mitch Richmond.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

it’s the perception we have of him and his reputation as a clutch shooter who can make it rain. his shot was dangerous and wet, but for whatever reason the numbers show differently. even thunder dan had so-so shooting %s, but we all agree he could light it up with his shooting

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

nick’s freethrows were the best! almost like shooting set shots from 3pt range

  • Tom

Also loved how he would cradle the rock like a football everytime he drove into the paint. One of the few ballers jay-z has namedropped in a song

  • Robb

    @D12FSU I know man I was joking ;)

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i remember an epic game between the bulls vs the lakers (i think it was kobe+shaq’s first visit at United Center) where lakers dominated earlier on but eventually went to overtime for a bulls victory. the two people who kept making shots after shots in 4th Q + OT? Toni Kukoc and Nick the Quick. neither of them could miss. the game also included jordan posting kobe for a spin-baseline dunk, a randy brown fastbreak dunk over two lakers, rodman about to get into a fight but pip tackled him to the floor, and – believe it or not – a eddie jones layup that made the cover of a video game (NBA shoot out or something like that, a Sony game for PSone). this game was epic and one of the best ever.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Co-Sign albie!!!! That game was ridiculous.

  • http://www.dontevenreply.com total scrotal implosion

This man was a playoff monster. It was him and mike finley who did all the clutch work for early 00s mavs. And mike finley HAS to be getting a fots soon. Those incredible dunks in playoffs against mavs in 06 were siiiiiiiiiiick. Quite possibly the most athletic supervet ever

  • http://deleted KH10

Nick was dope, love that falling out of bounds, turnaround, game winning 3 against Boston, and when he and Nashty were briefly the best backcourt in the L.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

@Eboy: glad you remember that game too. i have about 100 of games on tapes, and i ALWAYS go back and watch that particular game. i wish the NBA/TNT would release that game on itune. i’d pay 20 bucks for a digital copy. that game’s the definition of EPIC.

  • Tyler

Good ol Nick those were the good ol days dude had mad game cuz.

  • tavoris

alright for the lo-res video from NOT THAT LONG AGO. It felt like I was watching somebody play Double Dribble

  • hammer

@albie1kenobi. Wow. U went back n time on that 1. But I agree w/u. It has 2 b on my top 5 bulls games ever. I saw that game and it was on tnt. I wish espn classic would air that 1 again. I’ve only seen it that 1 time live. Haven’t seen it since. Bulls were just getting crushed till like 7-8 mins 2 go n the game. Then they turned it on and eventually won I think n ot. Kukoc and nick were clutch. Mj and pip I think had 30+ points apiece. Pip tackling rodman and pip smirking as he and rodman fell. That was funny. A gr8 game. And it was shaq’s 1st trip 2 the UC as a laker as well as kobes who was n his rookie year

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com zee!

Ahh the days where the Lakers weren’t the object of hatred. Man Nick had stupid game. AND he’d shove a referee. WHAT!!!

  • hammer

And that randy brown dunk was sick! If I’m not mistaken it was on elden cambell/eddie jones or cambell/sean rooks. U gotta let me borro that tape man. Still got my vhs. Ha ha!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

YES!! Van Excellent! My favourite laker of all time.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

you gotta upload that game on youtube or put it online for dl somehow. seriously.

  • Toni Kukoc

what year is the game? looking for it now!

  • hammer

    @ toni kukoc. ’97

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

pretty amazed that people remember that EPIC game too.
@davidR, I’ve moved out of my home state so my friends inherited all my game tapes. i’ll have to check with him to see if he can do something with it.
btw, here’s the game, box score style: http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/199612170CHI.html

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

@hammer: it’s actually 96. i linked the box score in my previous comment and it’s in moderation. the date of the game is December 17, 1996.
@Toni Kukoc: looking up your own game huh? bad ass. i remember one of the sports highlight guy went on a rambling that night about “show me the money! show me in Croatian currency” for those 3′s Kukoc was draining. hilarious.

  • hammer

My bad kenobi. I knew it was either 96 or 97

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Great shifty fast player, who played hard most of the time, I missed him after he was gone from the Lakers squad.

  • TheMagician10

I’ll never forget the day I heard he was traded from the Lakers…it was a day that was coming and predictable since he kept butting heads with Del but still I did not want a player like him to leave my beloved Lake Show..he is hands down my favorite player of all time and I model most of my game from his..he was flat out someone you wanted on your squad. They say the return of Magic started the bad feelings he had with the team…But he is truly missed out on that floor.

  • unrel

same pass at :42 and 1:39… one of the best passes i’ve ever seen..

  • flipnoyce

After NICK left the Lakers thats when I stop being a lakers fan!!!!!

  • Shem

I never remember him being as crafty when he went to the rim, he’s also a much better passer than I expected. Nice mix, terrible music

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

    I like his fake behind-the-back.

  • http://google c_cantrell

lightning quick.. used to be one of my fav players

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

For old time’s sake: Mitch Richmond.. (post comments here-

  • Anon E Mouse

I think that FOTS is a unanimous win! Yep Nick was that dude back in his day. Total NBA 97 on Playstation 1 – I have to admit to using Nick and the Lakers to win tournaments. Elden C did some helluva swatting – only on the Playstation though ;-)

And Eboy makes a beautiful point – Nick vs Sam both higly skilled, no fear and slightly risky choices for a team (allegedly) but always rewarding for the fans. My take, Van Excel brought the 3 point dagger with an almost NYC flavour, Sam had the effortless looking midrange game with sideline antics to boot.

Great times, and great job Schneezy!

  • Klav

Jordan was 10-32 that game? damn. still dropped 30 tho.
