For Old Time’s Sake: Patrick Ewing

It seems as though Patrick Ewing has been on the receiving end of some of the filthiest dunks in NBA history. I’ve learned this by scouring youtube for videos to share with you basketball nuts. I grew up in NY, so being a fan of #33 was natural. While he may not be the greatest center of all time, he is certainly among the greatest. He led the Knicks to the Finals twice (’94 & ’99) and represents the glory days of New York basketball for anyone not around in the early 70s. Ewing won a National Championship at Georgetown in ’84 and was the National Player Of The Year in ’85. You can imagine how ecstatic New York was when they landed him with the first pick in the ’86 draft. He went on to win the ’86 ROY, become an 11x NBA All Star, win a Gold medal with the original Dream Team, and be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Not too shabby. Check out the two long but dope vids provided by MikeC.

LMAO… He “led” the Knicks to the NBA Finals twice. He was on the team but he did not lead them anywhere that year.

  • Sean Posted: Sep.6 at 11:03 am
I was referring to 99 when I said that year BTW.

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Sep.6 at 11:13 am
Ewing was a straight up GOON in GTown and his prime years with NYK. Dude had one of the BEST midrange game for a big man in history and never backed down from challenging many of the great dunkers in history. His knicks team were the only team apart from zeke’s BAD BOYS that gave the Bulls MAJOR problems. Give me a prime PEwing over DHow ANY DAY of the week.

@Sean please don’t act like getting to the Finals is some easy SH*T. Just winning one game alone in the playoffs is hard as hell let alone winning 15-16 games just to get to the finals, getting to the Finals is no CAKEWALK. There are lots of so called GREAT players that have never even sniffed the finals, so don’t try to downplay Ewing achievements.

    @JTaylor – word.

People always say Ewing kept getting dunked on but the real reason is because he was a WARRIOR that contested every shot and didn’t run away from a charging opponent in fear of being ESPN’d. He and Olajuwon had some Wars before that final in 94 and Ewing gave as good as he took. Olajuwon didn’t embarass him as he did the Admiral and Shaq in subsequent series. Why he never gets his due is insane. Great midrange game, great defense, spin moves etc…. The media always said he wasn’t friendly but you gotta be tough out here in NY. I saw him at a reggae concert in MSG (buju!) and he was cool as hell. He got a standing ovation from the reggae crowd. True warrior and real champion with or without a ring.

One of the toughest players in NBA History.
    6 knee surgeries.
    The wrist.
    The ruptured achilles.
    The passion.
    The heart.
    The desire.
    The sweat.
And, he had a hard time “letting it go”.

Patrick chewing. My fav center of all time altho I hated him growing up. Despite those knicks having tuff physical teams, ewing was deprived of a tru sidekick. And still he took them 2 the finals n 94 altho they barely survived pip and the bulls that yr. But even w/a tru sidekick I still can’t envision him getting by the bulls 4 a title. And its not patricks fault that dwight doesn’t posess the skills 2 b an efficient go-2-guy scorer n the post

  • MikeC. Posted: Sep.6 at 12:40 pm
@The Philosopher – I almost forgot about the sweat. Those little kids that mop up sweat after free throws earned their money at MSG. I bet the sweat moppers around the league dreaded when their teams hosted NY. Ewing was like a lawn sprinkler.

    ^^Hell Yeah!! Lol

^^My reason for being an nba fan.

  • ClutchPerformer Posted: Sep.6 at 3:08 pm
they dont make em like him anymore, legit bruising centers, who dont shy away from attempting a block on a dunk

  • Overtime Posted: Sep.6 at 4:20 pm
Cosign Clutchperformer: Absolutely, reason he got dunked on so much was because he tried to block them. Dont forget all the ones he did block

Thank you for this! Patrick Ewing will always be one of my favorite ball players of all time. A great person and player. ’90s KNICKS WHERE HAVE YOU GONE?! He was one of the first players on the first team I ever rooted for. This brings back so many memories of when we lived in Manhattan when I was a kid, cheering on the Knicks with my Dad for that second Finals run. I love you, Dad!!! Peace to 59th Street.
And co-sign MikeC….. That second video I have watched multiple times, repeatedly, and wow–I’m on the verge of tears almost every time. One of the best basketball tributes/mixes on the net. Crazy.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.6 at 5:08 pm
Daaayum, Rakim/Knicks/Ewing is a perfect blend.

  • The Seed Posted: Sep.6 at 5:52 pm
I wish he would have won at least one title, but he is one of the greatest shooting big man ever, he just needed to work on his finger rolls, but he is one of the best ever to play center. BOOK IT!!!

  • BossTerry Posted: Sep.6 at 7:06 pm
Ewing was awesome… Too bad he never got that ring in 99..

  • MikeC. Posted: Sep.6 at 8:38 pm
NY needs to build around guys that work hard and love the game. After that, the wins will come.

  • Dmiles21 Posted: Sep.6 at 10:58 pm
    Ewing was New York!

  • Izzy Posted: Sep.7 at 12:12 am

  • underdog Posted: Sep.7 at 5:29 am
To all those Dwight Howard fans out there, with love!!

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.7 at 8:45 am
jtaylor- you only have to win 12 games to get to the Finals… And before the first round was a 7 game series, it was 11.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER Posted: Sep.7 at 9:09 am
Patrick Ewing gave us Jeff Van Gundy. Thank you, Patrick.

  • vtrobot Posted: Sep.7 at 12:14 pm
“I lead my team to 60 wins, like my man Pat Ewing!” EEEEEEEEEEEEEWING! i really miss relevant Knicks teams. it’s been quite some time. with pat’s midrange game, there’s no way that dwight will EVER be as good (offensively).

  • Run'N'Gun219 Posted: Sep.7 at 12:27 pm
In 5the grade i got a pair of thouse black, orange, and blue ewing thst he is wearing in the 2nd video. when i stepped on the court i thought i was ewing( minus the gallons of sweat). Man memories, pat brought it every night. but to bad he couldnt hit a DAMN FINGER ROLL!!!!

  • hammer Posted: Sep.7 at 1:11 pm
@hursty. Man ur acting like getting 2 the finals aint a thang. It takes 12 WINS,not games 2 get there. Ur automatically assuming that its a sweep every single round. Take that n consideration. And 4 u 2 say that it “only” takes 12 games? U obviously have no idea how hard it is 2 win n the L. This isn’t ur skool playground girls u play against with @ recess. If it were that easy as u make it seem teams like the clips, grizzlies, knicks, kings etc., would be making finals trips as well right? Didn’t think u were that naïve man. Obviously u havnt seen past playoff games like n the 80′s and 90′s 2 know just how dam tuff it is just getting 2 the finals, let alone winning a title. I suggest u do that

True Warrior – sadly they don’t make bigs like Big Pat anymore. Prime Ewing in todays NBA would be unstoppable.
