For Old Time’s Sake: Vernon Maxwell

Mad Max, what a character. Most famous for his playing days with the Rockets as well as some off court issues, Vernon Maxwell was a gritty dude. He hit countless game winners, shined in the ’94 Finals, and had the superhuman ability of being able to keep Michael Jordan in check. He was a corner back in high school so lock down defense came naturally I guess. He led the league in 3-pointers made in both the ’90-’91 and ’91-’92 seasons and holds the Rockets franchise record for 3-pointers made with 730. Mad Max was as clutch as they come and went all out on the hardwood. Gotta respect that. Shout out to Bobby Blue for the mix.

Jason Terry has just a little bit of Maxwell in him.
    Maxwell was meaner.
    Great video.

MJ didn’t want no problems with mad max…..

  • Ali

Classic!!! Loved this guys game and mentality on the court, tough as nails.

  • Papa Smurf

Not bad, but A Mad Max highlight video ain’t complete without clips of at least a couple punches thrown.

  • http://google c_cantrell

love players with his attitude.. honestly wish there was a few more in the league now

after he punched that fan his game became 2 watered down…i bet Stern musta told him 2 stop all that Mad Max garbage or else

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 DFrance21

They just don’t make players like him anymore. Everyone wants to be the good guy, be the marketing machine. Give me a team full of tough jerks anyday. Players like Maxwell, Starks, Elie, PJ Brown, what they lacked in skill, the more than made up for with toughness.

  • barnabusb

Didn’t he bite some dude’s head once?

  • http://slamonline.com Schneezy

hahaha. who knows? is that not socially acceptable or something?

  • http://google c_cantrell

man this dude sure does have alot of fans lol only 11 comments so far counting mine.. gotta be all time low for “For Old Time’s Sake”

  • http://slamonline.com Schneezy

yea, for real. no love for Mad Max…weak.

  • http://google c_cantrell

well for what its worth i liked it bro

  • andreanglais

Gotta love a highlight reel with no dunks…

  • Thirsty

    probably because he has herpes

  • Brian

Delonte West is the 2K10 Mad Max.
Mad Max after being MIA from the Rockets in ’95 for “personal problems”.
“That’s just something I made up. I’m on vacation. I’m drinking brews, playing golf and getting paid.”

some of you guys commenting on this are just complete idiots

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Loved watching this guy play… Anyone know what song that was in the highlights? I usually would list whom I want the next f.o.t.s. to be here, but Ya’ll are doing just fine!! Keep it up..!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Also, I think a f.o.t.s. would be a great addition to the mag.. Not so much like the “old skool” section, which honestly, usually features guys I’ve never heard of. But I like to see what guys who retired not too long ago are up to these days.. The got Stevie Francis not too long ago, and Michael Dickerson a few years back.. Probably tough to do because guys want outta the lime light now and live a pretty average life spending their money..

  • Thirsty

I am a complete idiot. So is Vernon Maxwell. He was badass in the 94 playoffs though.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

the song is Anno Domini – Puffional (Hip-Hop/Instrumental)

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

and yea, kinda sucks that there’s no discussion going on this time around. how would you rank the all-time craziest players? people like: rodman, xavier mcdaniels, mad max, artest, etc.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Thanks David, im gonna check it out on itunes and decide if I wanna buy..

  • http://www.clutchfans.com/ Blue

@ davidR: I have to put Maxwell atop the Dean’s crazy list. I remember when he was arrested for pulling a gun at Luby’s (which in itself is gangsta), was bailed out and played in the second half of the Rockets – Blazers game where he hit a jumper to ice the game…thinking back now, I don’t know who was crazier. Max or the assistant coach that bailed him out to play that night, lol!

  • OneStep

That’s a dull highlights package. If you didn’t see Mad Max play this reel is not wholly indicative of what he was about.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

MAD MAX! Another awesome player from the ’90s. The ’90s are definitely one of, if not THE best era in NBA history because, in addition to the great players like Jordan, Malone, Stockton, Ewing, etc., there were so many tough, hardnosed, charismatic and downright crazy @ss players in this era–Mad Max being one of them! And trust me, that’s a compliment.
Now we need Ant Mason, Oakster, and of course, JOHN STARKS. Oh, and X-Man.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Okay I didn’t know so much about Mad Max’s off court problems… Maybe crazy isn’t a compliment after all. On the court, he was really fun to watch though. Off it… No comment.

  • hammer

Mad max! As martin lawrence would say “You so crazy!” Have 2 say my fav rocket of all time. Gritty, tuff, heart, champion. Did whatever it took 2 get the job done. Never really got over punching that fan n p-town. Tho he did have a pretty solid stint w/the kings

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Rod Strickland, Derrick Coleman, Glenn Robinson, Sam (Big Smooth, not smoove) Perkins.. Please, please, please..

  • JoeMaMa

DERRICK COLEMAN. The kids on this site don’t know better. And, well…neither did he. But DERRICK COLEMAN.

  • Randy Brown

Man that SP Times article is badly written
