Video: Red Bull King of the Rock on Alcatraz

It’s been nearly 50 years since basketball has been played in The Yard on Alcatraz. Since the inmates left the island in ’63, it’s been just tours — not blood sweat and tears. That was until Red Bull King of the Rock, a one-on-one basketball tournament, blew up the most famous island off the SF Bay. The tournament ran a 64-player bracket with five-minute games. L.A.’s Isaiah “Clutch” Bowman lived up to his nickname and beat Phoenix’s Gary Smith with a banker that broke the 6-6 tie with 2 seconds remaining. Congrats to the first Red Bull King of the Rock!

The “King of the Rock” maybe is the greatest, smartest, most genius project I’ve ever heard about basketball tournaments. And from what I saw in the video, it was executed brilliantly! If that tournament happens again, I wanna be there…

who remembers getting they friends together and promising each other they would go on court for the Open-Runs whenever the And1 Mixtape Tour came to their city…

ish looks dope as hell. bring that over to the east coast.

lucky sf wasnt covered in fog that day

regardless, that’s a dope concept for a bball tourney. maybe the final match should’ve been 10 minutes

Nice concept but if you dont have qualifiers in NY BMore, South Florida or Tx then you dont have “the 60 best street ballers” Sidenote: never hire Rajon Rondo as a motivational speaker.

That fog was genuine! And, yes, the tourney’s coming back to the Rock… and the word is the qualifiers will be expanded globally.

South Florida street ball players aren’t doing much. Maybe you should mention Philly. Look what they did in the 2 on 2 tourneys Red Bull had along the East coast.

The whole I-95 basically, your nit-picking.

  • matt(ballislife

anyone else notice the oakland qualifier saying he had never been to alcatraz….how can you live 25 minutes from an iconic piece of history your whole life and never go? haha

  • DDB

You are right Boing…throw Chicago in there too.

  • Harlem_World

Battlegrounds 2.0. Yawn. Someone needs to holla at Red Bull, that hat Rondo got on is NOT working.

What is this song called in the vid?????

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

matt, i live in the bay, and i know a lot of people who have never been to alcatraz. the fact that one has to take a ferry to get there makes it less appealing. now, if he said he’s never been to the city… then i’d really be surprised.

lol @davidR as if visiting a place that incarcerated some of the worst men in this countries history isn’t appealing enough
