NBA players have a rich and hilarious history of not being up to speed on their foreign surroundings, and Rudy Gay is the latest to add to that tradition. (Via YBB):

@the black rick kamla. no, the smartest people in the world don’t all live in the usa, and on averge, an americans ignorance is about 4 times higher than other countries. I love america, but you guys need get some education
yes GROVES, yes…..im not american but i went to college in the US….so from experience i can say that you cant generalize and say that all americans are idiots…..a great percentage yes, but not all….i still like americans though….except their national soccer team!!
“on averge (sic) an americans (sic again) ignorance is about 4 times higher than other countries.” Awesome job Groves, just where did you obtain this scientific data from? Making an ignorant statement about us Americans’ ignorance being four ties higher than the rest of the world, were it true, would be equivalent to Wesley Snipes calling the late Bernie Mac (RIP!) black!
*four times. Damnit, sorry, my M key is as busted up as Groves’ intellect.
people make mistakes, i think rudy gay just made an honest mistake.
i think wherever you go in the whole world there will always be people who end up giving their country bad reputations. all it takes is a few bad incidents from a few ‘bad’ people to ruin one’s impressions of a certain country.
lol my man @Enigmatic is going in lol so true. How do you measure what is ignorance?? Refer to @Total Scrotum Implosion comments because I’d rather not waste any time restating it myself. And yes @Groves the smartest people in the world do live in this country the brains behind almost every important technological advance gather here and there is a reason
In no way do I think Rudy Gay is giving America a bad rep, really. I mean, sure it’s a little iffy but he seems like a good dude, and he had nothing but compliments for Turkey. Doesn’t mean he isn’t smart, nor does it give America a bad impression. He’s representing America for something positive here, even despite the errors.
This ain’t about Americans and or the USA vs. the World, and definitely it ain’t about race. It’s about people. Get a passport and try to get out of your bubble and travel the world a little bit. Then maybe you will know the difference between and country, city, town, village, etc…
“Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance.” – Confucius “Nothing in the world is more dangerous than a sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.” – MLK Jr. “The recipe for perpetual ignorance is: Be satisfied with your opinions and content with your knowledge.” – Elbert Hubbard
@Ali…you used that MLK quote completely out of context bruh….I doubt you even know what letter that quote came from or what he was talking about….so yeah, would me calling you ignorant/stupid/etc. be valid??? didn’t think so. everybody needs to hop off their little high horses and realize that nobody knows everything. Knowledge, firstly, can not be measured and even if it could, basing it on one’s proficiency in world geography couldn’t be more ignorant in itself.
@The Black Rick Kamla…16 Apr 63 Bir-Ham, Bama Jail Cell…and I’m not about to get into the contents of the ltr with you on a B-Ball blog! Maybe I did somewhat take quote out of context but IGNORANCE is IGNORANCE in my book. I never presume to be all knowing like some. Just stating the obvious ignorant/mistake/whatever we want to call it, statement Rudy made concerning Turkey.
That’s not a bad mistake.
Except that he actually is in Turkey right now. Way to observe your surroundings, Rudy!
I remember Shaq committing a similar blunder when he mistook the pantheon for a greek night club. With all the travelling involved (on and off the court), you’d think the one subject athletes would be good at is geography, hehe. And about the “americans are stupid/ignorant” thing, that’s just an equally stupid/ignorant generalisation as I’ve heard people from everywhere blurting silly geographic statements.
Are you kidding me? This just fits the american stereo type perfectly. I can already see many europeans getting on this, but i don’t think im gonna join in.
@Ali then like @TSI said above is it more ignorant not know that Turkey is a country than it is to not know what the capital of South Dakota is??? There are 2 viewpoints here- one is a Eurocentric viewpoint, which the majority of you European posters are espousing, which believes that consciousness of Europe and European culture/history/civilization are fundamental to what is ‘knowledge’….an ideology that couldn’t possibly be more flawed.
ALLENP, can you explain what you think of Italy?
I agree that violence and racism is widespread all over the world and that these US-bashing comments are just ridiculous and stupid, but to quote Italy as an example of racism and xenophobia is inappropriate and wrong.
Um, its way more important to know that Turkey is a nation, not a city, than it is to know the capital of South Dakota. Especially in the political climate we have today.
The U.S, by and large has a very self-centred view. Thats not just an opinion, thats truth.
“Its so stupid when we get losers like this talking about ‘all Americans are fat/racist/stupid’ when they’ve never been to American and only know about America whatever their media chooses to portray…I ” The funny thing is that’s exactly how us-citizens behave regarding the rest of the world… FYI: the inet technology was developed in CERN!
I don’t want to generalize here and I do like the us, but isn’t it kind of ignorant when you say Americans while you actually mean us-citizens…?
all americans are very funny because they dont care about any other countries but it is their choice and it doesnt bother me only it makes sad about all of u guys.what a shame…
I see chickens in Turkey.
@ the black rick kamla. Just to let you know the internet is not ‘American Technology’. Do some research, you just added to the stupid american gaffes right there son!
so rudy gay got that wrong-does that prove that he´s an ignorant idiot?no,just proves being a multimillionaire doesnt make you educated or smart-he´s not getting paid for scientific brilliance but for playing basketball-good for him that that gets him that kind of money.important for kids to realize though, that many of those”semi-gods from the commercials”are really pretty human in most things-and not necessarily on a high level at that.they just happen to be really good at something that in todays world is being (over?)valued.several things i feel i have to adress, though.i have to agree with hursty that the us indeed has a self-centered view-part of that is certainly due to its size-as the opposite can be said eg for the scandinavian countries.(in relation to media,market-structures etc.)now in the globalized world we live in today, allenp´s and jukai´s “we just dont care”mentality ain´t the way to solve our problems in the future..yes,there´s ignorance everywhere,no doubt, and i really dont think a lot depends on wether the average american can name many capitals of european countries and vice versa, but that innate american sense of entitlement-we are the greatest country etc..-it´s ok that we use about 25% of world energy even if we have just 5% of the worlds population etc..that appeared to be somewhat prevalent in many areas of the country i´ve been to.and thats got to go.and black rick:stop bragging about how all the most intelligent people in the world are americans etc..many people from all over the world are working and researching somewher ein the us-and many innovations and patents come from germany asia etc..on a scientific level it´s really a global effort nowadays, time for evrybody to grow up and get over this nationalistic bs..
To The World:
With all AND fullest due respect to the rest of the world who may read this thread, nothing in the entire world we live in happens OR occurs, transpire, etc., without the blessings of arguably The Greatest Country humanity has ever witnessed. The USA.
And, it is NOT by accident.
Even WHEN the world’s governments gather and congregate, it is The United States who breaks the bread first.
And, WHENEVER a world event unfolds, it is The United States coming in, with world renowned calvary, such as Enigmatic, The Soldier.
There is NO country like The United States.
Never has been.
Never will be again.
It does not matter, the negativity, the perceived lack of knowledge, racism, etc.
None of that really matters.
Racism is within the individual, not nations.
The United States is…
@Philosopher: Such a comment with THAT name – youre a joke!
You commented that it is ignorant to generalize.
You should study AND analyze your 7:53 a.m. comment.
I’ll continue as the joke as you bask in your ignorance and contradictions.
I hope my being a joke is funny.
Nothing against your comment, there is truth in it! But at least have the decency to change your name before posting that patriot ish! Yeah, USA is kind of a leader globewise… But its a leader of a crappy and corrupted system, thats values money and economy more than life itself. Using wars to generate income. Lying to its own citizens. Cutting freedom. Yeah buddy, youre ought to be proud of that!
Plus: How you get the idea that i generalize, while Im talking JUST about you – and only you – is beyond me…
“The funny thing is that’s exactly how U.S. citizens behave regarding the rest of the world”.-
How do you know that?
Is that not generalizing?
Again, I do not mean disrespect when regarding The United States’ greatness.
I’m just telling the truth.
Maybe it is beyond you…
But knowing you were educated by – and have the cultural background of – a system that is based on the surface of things rather than content, I shouldnt be surprised that some kid named “The Philosopher” posts this stuff… Learned my lesson!
And, the things that The United States Government partake and participate in has nothing to do with me.
It is not my personal business.
I would be foolish to be proud of something that I did not do.
Sounds like you are generalizing again.
How do you know I was educated in The United States?
How do you know that I’m educated?
How do you know that I live in The United States?
How do you know that I am not on the outside looking in?
And, you like my name.
First: I never commented that its ignorant to generalize. We all generalize, its the only way to build an opinion on certain topics. Otherwise we could never talk about an amount of people that exceeds the number of knowable individuals. But ill give you this: I would change my comment to “most US citizens”. You have to admit that there is truth in it. I cant think of any modern country that is so self-centered…
“The Greatest Country humanity has ever witnessed. The USA.” So if you like talking about generalizing, let me turn the spear… How do you know that? Youve been to every country? See… we ALL generalize. But a smart person like surely knows this!—– And apologies for the “youre a joke”-line, that was unnecessary.
Again, do you know most U.S. citizen?
Have you met most U.S. citizens?
It is still generalizing.
It is also racism.
It is also stereotyping.
And, I appreciate the apology.
And, as far as The Greatest country…
That is a modern historical fact.
Man, EFF the usa!!!
@Dman10….lol do your research fam. Invented in America, at American universities, by American researchers and computer scientists. Your being ignorant by calling me ignorant about something you know nothing of yourself…what a clown
And let’s not even discuss how many European nations treat the “Roma.”
Y’all got some nerve.
Great Britain and France both rival the USA for being self-absorbed. In fact, most Western nations are incredibly self absorbed. The difference is that the USA doesn’t mind telling everybody we think we’re the best, and we don’t care that much if you don’t like it.
That’s reality. I’m not saying it’s the best way to go through life, but the crux of people’s complaints is “The USA likes itself too much.” Considering the history of western civilization, along with your current behavior in many “third world” countries, y’all are going to have to do better than that.
“And, as far as The Greatest country…
That is a modern historical fact.” -> Sorry man, BUT thats ignorant!
@AllenP: Youre right, alot of nations are self-centered! I think the difference is that this state of mind is so strong in the US that it has found its way into education! Thats why the world calls you ignorant… We dont think your dumb. You just dont get any chance to learn about other countries and your surroundings! You have to understand, that this will paint a picture of you (the US) not caring, even if its not true.
And before you say I have no Idea. My family is from the US, and I was there a lot. Even going to high school a year… And I was shocked!
@Philosopher: Whats the greatest for you? Lets define that. As I couldnt care less about the income or economy of a country, but that may be the things that makes a country great for you…
“And let’s not even discuss how many European nations treat the “Roma.”
Y’all got some nerve.” And that has something to do with…..?
@BlackRick: The Inet technology was invented in CERN – between switzerland and france! But it was used first in the US… Enough of this, lets talk bball again: Anybody seen scola collapsing yesterday..?
it’s not only americans, just look up some quotes by european soccer players, dudes aren’t the brightest either… it’ not about being american, it’s about not using your head and reading a book once in a while, which maaaaaany people nowadays don’t..
When the entire world calls on America in the time of calamity… to come rescue everybody…
It has something to do with the accusations of racism thrown at Rudy Gay, Danny Granger and Americans as a whole.
