For Old Time’s Sake: Baron Davis

Baron Davis, while still electric at times, was once in the argument for best PG in the league. He’s built more like a stocky running back than a basketball player but he is/was lightning quick on his feet, had crazy handles, and could throw down some pretty emphatic dunks in the lane. He tore it up at UCLA and was drafted 3rd overall by the Charlotte Hornets in ’99 (after Elton Brand and Steve Francis). Davis backed up David Wesley and Eddie Jones his rookie season but started all 82 games the following year. He would continue to shine in New Orleans when the franchise moved cities but was then traded to Golden State in ’05 due to injuries and tensions with the coaching staff. He put together one of the best playoff series performances I’ve ever seen when he lead the 8th seeded Warriors to a 4-2 series victory over the No. 1 seeded Mavericks in 2007. After the ’08 season he signed with the Clippers where he currently plays. Davis is a 2x All Star with over 5,000 assists and 1,400 steals who still has a few more years left in the tank. With a healthy Blake Griffin, the Clips could definitely make some noise out West. Shout out to Dustin A for sending in the mix.

used to be my favorite player, explosive to the rim, money from outside, had the handles and cross to mix you up. Dang man, this game sure takes a toll on the body….only 3 years removed from throwing down one of the most vicious dunks in playoff history and if you watched him last season he looked like he would have trouble even touching the rim. The news about him being 250ish (i’d have to see it first to believe it) is a tad disheartening, not sure if he really has had his head in basketball since the trade from GSW…..its funny how when players move back to their home state/city things never seem to work out….Marbury in New York, B Diddy in LA….

    no boom boom on AK47?

  • drdunkenstein

No AK-47 dunk?? That’s his best one. Incredible player though… speed, power, skill…total package. When he’s on his game, I don’t think there’s many better.

“get your hands off my ass Steve Nash”

I think Baron is a complicated person. He tries to be from the hood but also Hollywood at the same time. It seems he has a good heart and is a smart person and he seems genuine but I think he’s also an emotional multi-layered person. He’s always looking praise from the world. I think he wants to make everyone happy and I think a lot of times he over complicates things. He wants to be this man of the world, this multi-cultured, smart, funny, charming person that is loved by all people; from the hood, to Hollywood, to big business people to his fellow NBA players. I think he’s trying to be too many things at the same time. Why do you think he as associated himself and befriend Steve Nash all these years. He he first came into the league and before Nash became famous in Dallas and then back to Suns, we never heard of Baron and Nash hanging out and doing things together. He saw how Nash handles himself in the public eye. From his political views, how well read he is, how cultured he is, how “smart he is” how Nash can talk and connect to everyone, from NBA players, to Hollywood people to big business executives and Baron wants to be like him. He wants to be viewed like Nash.
He needs to be this all encompassing person that is universally loved and adored and then he plays his best ball. Baron has a lot to prove this year bball wise. If he truly wants to be the toast of the town he needs to be a leader and he needs to dominate first on the court

When is Slam going to do a For Old Time’s Sake: Danny Fortson?

  • CQ

RUN TMC needs to get some shine

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

To me B Diddy is still top 5 maybe top 7 point gaurd in the L. He has it all can shoot, has handle, drive,”D”,toughness, quickness, and athletic. he is is leaps and bounds better than alot of pg that people put on there top 5 list. like rondo, weestbrook, brooks,. I will say since becoming a clipper it looks like he is not as interested anymore. but its the clippers. The people running the team suck. If they are not putting ther all into running the franchise, why shoutld he. once they show that they are doing whatever to win i think all there players will play hard.

  • onlyclipsfanonslam

@dabaldchino what you mean tries to be from the hood? HE GREW UP IN SOUTH CENTRAL. Diddy is still the main man, watching him play is a joy. Easily one of, if not the most, creative players in the game today. Still drops the prettiest dimes on the daily, if you don’t think so refer to the 180, no look, over the shoulder alley oop pass after shaking Rondo against the Celts.

here’s a video about baron davis and jason richardson, one of the best/dangerous/most entertaining backcourts:

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

there’s also this half-court alley oop from baron to jrich. in the playoffs, at dallas, 4th quarter, 5 mins left. man, i firmly believe the we believe warriors were more entertaining than the 7 second suns. both were dope though:

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

^^ in the baron & jrich video, check the off the backboard alley oop at :47 seconds. jrich even crammed it on lamar. ridiculous!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

i can’t believe he made that backboard pass. That’s both horrible basketball, and the reason why we watch the NBA in the first place.
Amazing highlight. One of the best I”ve ever seen.

  • hammer

@dabaldchino. So barons kinda like a ogre “Ogres r like onions. We have layers” ha ha!

  • Seven Duece

The pg version of Shaq, could been so much more if really pushed himself to the limit.

  • chrisnew

i remember the first slam i got, it was the paul pierce cover, and i was HEATED because i wanted the baron davis cover

  • http://www.twitter.com/HurstySYD Hursty

Baron at Maccas drive-through is awesome. It’s on youtube.
    Dude is just awesome.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@Allenp just a preseason game, you know Baron is too smart to do something like that when it matters. Anyways man GSW had something going man…..whats with Nellie???? like seriously???? He had the most explosive, exciting, back court in the league and he broke it up…..then shipped out Randolph and Morrow and Turiaf…like seriously if i was a GSW fan, I would remember the Run TMC times, but I’d be a little heated at that….course he ain’t the management but still

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I want to be steve nash too….maybe I’m Baron Davis?

  • Brian

Davis did dominate against Dallas in ’07 like few players are capable of. If he could find his way to a contender like Orlando……….

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

  • PlanetAsia14
