Just Cuz: Jay-Z 1994

Came across this old school Jay-Z video on roc4life.com that I’d never seen before. The whole steez of the video from the cars to the clothes and the women screams 90s. Flow was tight as ever but don’t know what the deal is with the Reggie Miller jersey. Reggie + NY in ’94 = Problems. Peep it

@Schneezy

And if you haven’t heard the ’95 Freestyle with Big L, now’s the time.

    Old school Friday. Excellent.

  • JTaylor21

RIP Big L, Jay-Z WHO? Give me TIP, Snowmizzle, and Lilweezyana any day of the week over dude.

  • Martey

^so I assume the 21 in your name is your age.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Martey, I am 24 and know my hip hop, it’s not an age thing, it’s a stupidity thing.

    “From Marcy to Madison Square.”

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Dude is one of the biggest biters of alll time. And why is james answering marty like hes jtaylor?

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

“ask Bevis, I get nothin butthead”

  • dmoore

the 7 min freestyle is from 95, pre- reasonable doubt

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

JTaylor is a “numpty balls” as my friend would say. That is why I was answering.

  • http://slamonline.com Schneezy

    @dmoore. true. updated

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Actually, his flow here is inspired more by his old mentor Jaz-O than Das EFX.. Which would make sense.

  • hangtime Hec

Co-sign zee!. Jay-Z biting is and was ridiculous. You would think that he went around almost devouring CDS and engulfing lyric pamphlets one by one. Still one of the best to do it.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Jay-Z was never the same after Reasonable Doubt. Roc-A-Fella was pretty bad after that imo.

  • thegfunk

    Straight outta above the rim

  • jdubbs29

That freestyle is ridiculous. Check out Eminem’s Westwood freestyle on YT.

YALL BOYS ARE CRAZY. JAY IS A BEAST. HE DOES NOT BITE.WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? EVERY RAPPER AND I MEAN EVERY RAPPER USE’S A LINE FROM OTHER RAPPERS ITS LIKE PAYING HOMAGE. ITS LIKE WHEN PEOPLE DO THE “ROCK THE CRADLE DUNK” THEY ARE NOT BITTING MIKE, THEY ARE PAYING HOMAGE TO HIM LETTING HIM KNOW WHAT HE DID WAS DOPE. SAME WITH THE RAP GAME

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

“Im not a biter I’m a writer, for myself and others. I say a BIG verse I’m only biggin up my brotha, biggin up my borough, I’m big enough to do it….”

First he says he does not write rhymes.
Then he says he writes for himself and others.
Then he says he’s going to land The King…
    and doesn’t.
Well, I never heard him SAY he had The King, but, he might as well have.

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

The Philosopher ^ What are u babling about homie. just let it go. Jigga is that dude. “What u eat, dont make me sh!t… Damn wheres the love”

  • E-Ro

Jay also appears with a nasty verse on “Da Graveyard” in Big L’s debut LP. He gets freakin’ tore up by Big-L here though. The one-liner MCs are made for sick battle raps.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Royal

RIP to BIG L one of the most underrated M.C’s of all time. Respect to Jay Z too, you can tell that his freestyle was a true freestyle he was going straight off the top. Nothing was written.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Royal

Miss the old Jigga not this commercial one take us back to Reasonable Doubt

  • The Philosopher

    Run’Gun219:
Yeah, I guess you’re right, man.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Reasonable Doubt is still my favorite CD. isht been in my CD changer since i got my liscence.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

    Jayz is crap

  • JalepinoSausage

BIG L Is 1 of The Illest of All Time !! Jigga ‘z not even close. ‘U Know nottin’ about L So don’t Doubt L , what’s the Mutha Umphin Rap Game with out L Yo …. ….. …. …. ….. ….. Don’t touch the Mic if u unable to Spit .. .. ….. !!!!!!! ‘ The real know the blanx. One !!!!

  • hammer

Whoever it was that would pick lil wayne over jigga is just ignorant. Now don’t get me wrong. Wayne does bring it lyrically. But jigga is another planet above wayne. And biggie, big L,krs one and pac r n whole other universe. They can’t b touched. Hell, wayne isn’t even top 20 lyricists of all time. My suggesstion is go back and fill ur head w/some REAL hip-hop knowledge. Here’s a few sugesstions: celly cell, rakim, ice cube, eminem, too short,90′s snoop, slick rick, jeru the damaja, canibus, nas, mos def, talib kweli, lauren hill(yes she can rap and sing). Just 2 name a few

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Considering Jay-Z and Big L were boys. And Big L pushed Jay-Z up through the rapping ranks, and considering jay-z and big l had a similar cadence and delivery liking one as “the best” and not liking the other promotes ignorance. Listen to the 7 minute freestyle with Jay-Z and Big L if you don’t know what I’m talking about.

  • hammer

Sayin big L and jigga had similar deliveries is untru. Jigga had/has a more laid back delivery while big L had a raw style. He spit them lyrics out

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Big L had an in your face dare i say flamboyant style on a lot of his music. he also had a laidback smooth delivery that he mixed in. other then his story telling, his ability to change deliveries almost mid flow are what made him one of the best ever in just 4 years. Jay-Z was very similar (not with his new stuff, that pop isht is whack) could go hard like he did on dual evils, or laid back like 22 two’s.

  • hammer

Well..yeah. But so did pac and biggie. They had that ability 2 change their delivery as well. Its no coincidence that on my 1st post I put biggie, pac, big L and krs one as top mc’s that can’t b touched. They all posessed a unique ability n their style that no1 will ever b able 2 replicate

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

truly, you forgot Big Pun too. IMO Big L, B.I.G., and Big Pun were the best pure lyricists in the game. Big L, Nas & Slick Rick are the best writter/story tellers, and Pac is the Poet. But Jay-Z on reasonable doubt – life and times volume 3 was a monster. but I respectfully respect your opinion.

  • The Philosopher

    Nas = The G.O.A.T.

  • hammer

Actually I did not 4get big pun. As a matter of fact,I debated bout putting him up there. N my opinion, this is just me,I would rather put 90′s snoop above big pun. Not this new snoop. I hardly recognize this snoop. But early snoop, like I said n my opinion, couldn’t b touched. His flow and lyrics flowed as smoothly as a stream. Don’t get me wrong tho. Big pun IS 1 of the gr8s of all time. And I wouldn’t debate any1 if they considered him the best pure lyricist. And talking bout gr8s, jeru the damaja, n my mind is just sickly underrated. Its almost nauseating how he slips under the radar. Come clean is 1 of the dopest songs u will ever hear. His flow and his style is a thing of beauty. But I agree w/u that jigga was @ his best n reasonable doubt. Top 2 bottom classic album

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Damn I almost forgot all about Jeru – And no doubt early-mid 90′s snoop was out of this world. Man what happened to hip hop

  • the Danker Nuggets

i’v always thought this is the best freestyle ever, say what you will about either, their flows, lyrics and delivery are just beyond dope in this.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

IMO – Big L’s “98 freestyle” is the best freestyle ever. Then Eminem’s “Despicable”

  • hammer

Like warren g said “there’s no luv 4 the game, its all about the dough.” Its like the mentality of past artists was 2 b the best. And the $ and accolades would follow later on. Now its the $ and accolades 1st. And a lot of cats don’t even have the ambition 2 b the best. Also factor n that the younger hip hop fans, all they looking 4 is a nice beat and a good catchphrase n the song. That’s it. They don’t care bout the lyrics. And I think its a travesty that songs from lady gaga and some of the songs from b.e.p. r being played on hip-hop stations. Lady gaga is not hip-hop. And songs from b.e.p. r borderline techno and pop. Hip-hop is not the same and its a shame

  • hammer

Co-sign nbk. 98 freestyle the dopest!

  • The Philosopher

Slim Shady is an all timer, too.
    1. Nas
    2. Biggie
    3. LL Cool J
    4. KRS One
    5. Slim Shady
Depending on what kind of day it is, Rakim is top 5, too.
    Co-sign opinions on Jeru.
The most underrated of all times.
    Guru, too.

  • Mr. Robinson

    damn that list, man!
    I’M THE GOAT RAPPER!
    Me and that dude “Witness”!
    LOLOLOLOL!!!

  • hammer

That’s a good list philo. My top r as follows: 1.Biggie 2.Big L 3.Krs one 4.Tupac 5.Nas I used 2 have em as a top 5 but,2 me, I just miss up and coming em. U know? 1999-2002 em. I think that’s when he was @ his best. Dissing people left and right. Making words rhyme that u never ever thought any1 could make them rhyme. Like “syring-es and orang-es.” Just sick! He can still bring it lyrically tho. Not gonna debate u on em. Neither on ll cool. Especially “Momma say knock you out.” My all time ll fav song. That 1 song sums up and says everything u need 2 know bout him. “The man of the hour/Tower of power/I’ll devour”

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

Andre 3000 is hugely underrated as an individual

  • hammer

Co-sign nbk. Andre just kills it. Especially on “The art of storytelling” & “Return of the G”

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Some of you seem to have gotten all your rap knowledge from mtv. Pac was the most overrated rapper of all time. He was a great artist and poet, but as for rap skills, he was weak. Big was good, but def overrated too……. … .. K-RINO=GOAT, no contest. And freestyles? Fat pat would wreck anyone.

  • The Philosopher

    Co-sign hammer and Nbk.
Royce Da’ 5’9″ is a guy I respect.
Cam up with Slim, was raw with his lyricism, etc.
    Kool G. Rap.
50 Cent was cool when he was hungry.
    I respect Jay.
Just do not co-sign some of the things I hear about him. And, he does bite…
Snoop Dogg is my favorite rapper of all times.
    Especially young Snoop.

  • The Philosopher

    Tupac was overrated.
He was just the first of his kind.
The whole “martyr for the masses” thing.
Illuminati seemed to be scared of him.

  • The Philosopher

    @Tarzan Cooper:
I usually do not do this, but K Rino is not The G.O.A.T.
    Period.
    That man sounds like… Juvenile.

  • hammer

Tupac was/is overrated. I give u that much. But 2 go as far as 2 say he was weak? I wouldn’t say that. This is just my opinion. This is where we differ. What makes tupac gr8 n my book was his versaility. Lyrically speaking. He would make songs like “Keep ya head up” or “Changes” U know? Songs like that. But then he would do a total 180 on u and bust out “All about u” or “I get around” Break it down however u want but he is a legendary hip-hop icon. That ‘can’t b denied’ like fat pat says in “Wanna be a balla”

  • The Philosopher

    Nah,
    Pac wasn’t weak.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

My top 5 rappers (80% Eastcoast, except 2Pac “Me against the world” and “All eyez on me” and Snoop in “the Chronic” by Dre and “Doggystyle”)
    1- “It was all a dream…” ; “U were d Reebok vandal now u wear Chanel sandals, I made u, why will I play u”…
    2- “Even as a crack fiend… u always was the Black Queen…”
3- “There’s a thin line between paper and hate, friends and snakes”…
    4- “Don’t call it a comeback…”
5- “I made the Yankee cap more famous than a Yankee can”

  • hammer

Man. K rhino would get eaten up and spit out by CANIBUS. Imagine what biggie, jeru, big L,or krs one would do w/him. I shiver 2 think what would happen

  • heals

So far ahead of my time, that my parents haven’t met chet, just cuz I’m lovin it…

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

Tupac as a rapper yes overrated is true. But his impact is unrivaled and some of his songs poetically are anthems and background music to periods of peoples lives. (FE: Hail Mary, Changes)

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Phil, u turdburglar! You couldnt be more wrong about k-rino, juve? Hah. U need to listen to more k-rino: astronomical, loaded, when its time, perpetual ascension, forensics, book number 7 intro, barbedwire discipline, etc. Hammer, k would demolish canibus and the rest, give him an honest listen, then adapt. ….. And pac made some great music and was a global icon, no doubt, but his technical rap skills were weak, thats obvious. ………… … … ..My diary had my life wrote in it before I bought it from the store.

  • hammer

I’ve heard k rino. He aight. No goat tho. Like I said. We differ. That’s ur opinion bout him. I got mine bout him

  • hammer

Any TRU hip hop fan would never dare say pac was weak. No matter who u personally like. U can say that s**t bout puffy or timbo. Not pac

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Let’s have some Ludacris next time. He’s my favorite from the “new” school, because he has that voice and style that reminds me of the old school.

  • JTaylor21

Tupac is HIGHLY overrated and it’s annoying when moronic west coast jerkers try to act like dude’s in the same league as other great rappers. He was great at all that black panther crap but when compared to guys like BIG and BIG L dude comes up short. Also illuminant had nothing to do with his death, Suge had him brainwashed with that gang sh*t and he just ran into the wrong crip and got his a** lit up.

  • hammer

@jt. Ur right. Bubba sparxx and bow wow rock! Don’t know how the west can contend against them 2

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

@hammer JTaylor ain’t right but don’t go that far. More then likely he was referring to UGK, Outkast…

  • hammer

I know nbk. Just a lil sarcasm @ his westcoast comment. We got rappers 2. Point is there’s talent and legends n every region. And like I said. This isn’t the 90′s. Jt actin all childish w/that bs comment

  • JTaylor21

Alright Hammer go ahead and name those so-called great rappers and you better not say new boyz.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

Haha it’s what he does – he’s here to see his name repeated and talked about. Intact this is prolly feeding his ego…oh well — the living legends I feel should be mentioned in this conversation. Because they’re dope and nobody knows about um

  • The Philosopher

    JT:
I think we’re talking about two different things…
Good night, to all The SLAM brethren.

  • JTaylor21

NBK, by the living legends I hope you’re talking about UGK because those guys would wipe the floor with any other rap group in history not named Outkast, Geto Boys and Hot Boyz (yes I said it).

  • hammer

    Really jt? U wanna do this? Ok. Here it goes. Mc ren,kurupt,the game,eazy e,pac,rappin 4 tay,2 short,brotha lynch hung,ice cube,snoop. Shall I continue?

@ hammer obvously ppl are gonna disagree on the order but thats a solid list of artists there id switch andre 3000 with crooked i tho

  • Keith

Who is this Eminem guy on these lists?

  • JTaylor21

Hammer, those guys are cool but are any of them except the game (300 bars and that 14 minute song he dropped a few months back are LEGENDARY) lyrically in the same planet as guys like Andre3K, BunB, Scarface, Big L, BIG, Jay? I think not!

  • hammer

Take big L,biggie and jigga off that list and west coast got cats that could go toe 2 toe, lyric 4 lyric w/scarface,bub b and dre 3000. Cuz my list wasn’t even done yet man. Big L and biggie r on another level man. No cats not even from the south could touch those 2

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

In my opinion Eminem is the best rapper alive, Jay Z is second.

  • hammer

As examples: u say scarface I say mc eiht. U say bun b I say 2short. U say dre3000 I say rass kass

  • JTaylor21

Going to have do differ with you on that Hammer, Bun-B and 3K are just as good and have done it for a longer period of time than BIG and L. It’s just because they are from the south that people tend to give them less respect than dudes from up north. Also M&M’s so OVERRATED it’s not even funny, the only reason dude sells that much records is because of his you know what and dude talks about wanting to kill his mother and baby moms WHAT THE F*CK who raps about Bullsh*t like that and still sells records.

  • JTaylor21

Hammer, my fault I didn’t see 2short in your list. Yes 2short can join the pantheon of great rappers (I was just bumping Chase the Cat a few days ago). Apart from him and the game, there’s no one else from the west that belongs in the great lyricists convo.

  • hammer

Jay-Z, from the first Blueprint to The Black Album, is hard to compete with. The only one who beats him is the 95-96 2Pac (most, if not all, of the material that’s come out posthumously was recorded within that time period). Joe Budden is also incredible, and keeps getting better. Joel Ortiz is hard to match bar for bar, too.

  • tony oaklief
