Video: Garnett Ejected / Heinsohn: ‘The NBA, It’s Stupid!’

The NBA wasn’t kidding when it announced its new standards for issuing techs this past summer. Last night, Kevin Garnett first T’d for showing an official how a player had hit him, and then T’d again for laughing over the legitimacy of the first tech. Tommy Heinsohn, for one, isn’t a fan of the NBA’s ‘crack down’ on behavior.

    This is rediculous! It’s going to take a stand from an influential figure to loosen these rules. I agree that it is necessary to tone down some of the grander antics some of these players employ, but not allowing a player to show any emotion after a call is ridiculous! My biggest concern is what if a player is reacting to his own actions (Say he’s mad at himself for committing a dumb foul etc) and the ref misinterprets that as a show of disrespect, whats gonna happen then? The player can go to the ref and explain that he wasnt directing it at him or he’ll get another tech and be ejected. Craziness I say

    If anyone was watching the toronto game in van-city last week where they blew out Phx, Reggie Evans got ejected for slapping a Phx player (forget who) on the ass (completely non-aggressively/good-naturedly). The Phx player was also ejected for reasons unkown. A few more of these situations and Stern’s gonna have to address some serious hate from fans.

    This is absurd. Playing and competing emotions run high. The league seems to be trying to castrate itself; these are grown men caught up in the heat of the game.

    To try and rob them of their ability to express themselves is to rob the game of it’s sincerity and humanity. They are basketball players, not choir boys. Let them yell, let them fight. The league is taking this emasculation too far.

    Players will get the message and adjust. Now is the perfect time to enforce the rules more strictly now because the games don’t matter. I’m all for it, it’s very annoying to see superstars b-tch about every call. You can pretty much guarantee that Kobe and Lebron will be ice grilling the ref whenever they miss a layup in traffic.

    The problem is you have guys making these new rules that probably have never played sports competively in their life…so they dont understand what its like in a game when your adrenaline is going making it easy to over react.

    punching the air in frustration also results in a T, whether or not it’s directed to a ref or another player. some of these rules are waaayyy too strict.

    TMoney is on point. It’s annoying to seeing players bit*hing and moaning about every single call even the ones that they know they committed. It has now trickled down to even regular street ball where every play there are at least 5 people calling fouls.

    i do agree about the complaining though. i dont mind the refs cracking down on that. however, i just want the refs (nba) to leave the emotional outbursts alone. like slapping the backboard after a dunk, players talking isht to each other, taunting, hitting the basket stand in frustration, etc.

    …..funny I was just watching Sports Center seeing this dude Barry Melrose doing a play by play of a hockey fight that happened last night….talking about ‘…he took down one of the greatest fighters in the NHL. This has to be an early season favorite for the best fight of the year’……seriously???? I don’t get why when a hockey player starts fighting he’s being ‘tough’ and a good teammate, but when a basketball players starts even as much as arguing, he’s considered a ‘thug’ and the NBA has to clamp down on it?????…….lol, only a fool couldn’t see what the underlying issue is there…anyways

    I only played streetball growing up and the rule was ‘no blood, no foul’. I did play organized football though and the refs don’t catch everything, so you say, ‘blue, watch the facemask on #67′ and leave it at that. I was giving my wife hell the other day about B-ball not being a contact sport, this will reinforce that argument, lol. I hope this rule doesn’t stick but, I also hope the whining stops, as well. Yes, I know bball is a contact sport, I just like getting my wife revved up.

    God I the hate Boston Celtics announcers. They were right, but they are ridiculous. I think Fraizer put it was best. We pay to see the greats play.

    I’m not a Boston fan by any means, but I wanted to see how the Knicks would stack up against the Celts…

    The ref ruined that, last night. Thank God there is another game on Saturday.

    In regards to the hockey issue… Can you imagine catching a full on punch from someone like lebron with no pads and him being able to put his full weight behind the blow (not slipping on ice). That ish could kill somebody.I think this crackdown is excessive, but with the size and strength of NBA players, you gotta at least keep the game under control. Naw mean?

    Just because somebody does something wrong doesn’t mean you get to enact idiotic rules.
    Stars complain too much? Well use the existing rules and issue techs. Be consistent, stop being a punks, don’t write a whole new set of rules that’s asinine because as I predicted, this is going to blow up come playoffs time when the league cracks down on the rules at a pivotal moment after letting stuff slide all season.

    AllenP, got a point. Like in Gm7 for the first 3 quarters the refs were letting both teams get physical with each other which benefited the celts most but as soon as the 4th quarter came around with the celts leading I remember saying to myself that the refs are going to do a 360 and start calling the game tighter to benefit the lakers. That’s exactly what happened and the lakers took like 21 FTs to the celts 6, that’s the thing that irks me about NBA officials, they do a great job overall but they are too inconsistent.

    With any sport you play all you can ask for is consistency in refereeing. You can get upset with certain rulings and interpretations but as long as it’s the same for both sides it’s all good. @JTaylor21 I’m never a fan of Boston or the Lakers but I noticed that too. That 4th quarter was ridiculous.

    The NBA has a real kneejerk reaction to certain fan complaints.
    Like with fighting and complaining and stuff Stern is quick to make wholesale changes, but when it comes to refs and teams randomly deserting cities, he doesn’t say or do jack.
    It’s like the League is designed to funnel all negativity to the players while at the same time using their images to advance the brand.
    Fans have complained about the lack of tranparency in the referee corp for years, but now substantial changes have been made, but now we have these draconian rules about techs? In fact, the League has done something to address the tech issue for the past few years including increasing the fines and adding suspensions for a certain number of techs. I’m sure fans do complain, and it is annoying, but fans complain a lot more about bad refs, ticket prices and teams deserting cities.
    I should write something about this.

    Yeah Allen is right, not need to make all new rules. Kobe or Lebron or anyone else cries they get a warning. Cry again and they get a tech. Its that simple. You don’t have to outline every little saying and/or gesture that will cause a tech. Its funny they rescinded Perks tech last year when he walked away from the ref, then come up with this rule.

    The fact that hockey is played in a (plexi-glass) cage allows that L to be comfortable with much higher levels of violence. You hardly ever see dudes, not named Tie Domi, ending up in the stands with the fans. Imagine if they had China/Brazilian-like brawls every week in the NBA? Courtside fans would be getting JVG’d all the time. You’ve already got fans complaining about a giant baby knocking off their kid’s hat during a game winner. They have gone waaay too far now and continue to increase the refs impact on the outcome of games. Basically they’re “fixing” a problem that no one really cares about while making worse the majority of NBA fans’ main gripe. Just fine them huge amounts, but don’t throw players out of games for getting upset about BS calls. More replay. Robot refs.

    hmmm . . . I think the different treatment given to hockey fights and basketball fights is based on race more than anything. That said, I think the NBA has treated fights properly, and the NHL has not. If I want to watch a fight, I’ll watch a boxing match. Fighting is just one more reason hockey sucks.

    Sucks that its come to this.. I understand the whole whining about a call or non call.. But I like to see emotion, screaming after a nice block or dunk, to me, its part of the game.. Now a guy will get Teed-up for calling and1 after a shot.. They’re humans, not robots.. (I also think the dress code on the team plane is stupid).

    Wrote a letter to the NBA this morning, not sure how much it will do, but I’m for sure not going to be buying tickets to a game if there’s a high probability the players I came to see won’t be there at the end of the game.

    @ Papa: Do you work for LeBron’s PR team? Like LBJ, I would agree that you can never totally exclude the possibility that race might factor into an issue, but this has far more to do with the proximity of the fans to the players. It’s not like pre-1950 NBA had a 2-minute minor and a 5-minute major penalty for fighting and then changed when it those w/o the right to fight arrived in the L.

    LeBron’s issue had little, if anything, to do with race. The reaction to LeBron was based on the fact that he was a douche bag to Cleveland’s organization. I love how you and many other on this site come super hard with opinions but then fail to back them up with fact and start flexing internet muscles at the first sign of anyone disagreeing with them. Please tell why it’s because of race that there’s fighting in hockey and not basketball. I think my argument about the NBA not allowing fighting when it was all white was a pretty good point. What’s your argument that disproves it? I have a lot of respect for KG, but I love the game first and foremost, not just one team. Also, it’s when I’m giving KG a handy that I have trouble typing, not when I’m fellating him. Chill, man. Peace.

    Race has nothing to do with the reason “there is fighting in hockey and not basketball.” Fighting is not permitted in either sport. Race is the reason much of the sports media calls basketball players who fight “thugs”, while, at the same time, glorifying the fights hockey players get into. In turn, the sports medias’ commentary is the reason David Stern feels the need to punish fighting more harshly than the NHL commissioner feels the need to do so.
