Video: Kobe Uses Gay Slur Toward Ref (UPDATES)

Funky fanbelt. Funny fat boys. We’ll let you decide what Kobe actually said to referee Bennie Adams (around the 0:36 mark) after getting his 15th T of the season in last night’s game against the Spurs. Warning: vulgar language.

UPDATE: Kobe issued an apology this afternoon: “What I said last night should not be taken literally. My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone.”

UPDATE: The NBA fined Kobe $100,000 for making an anti-gay slur. Commissioner David Stern issued the following statement: “Kobe Bryant’s comment during last night’s game was offensive and inexcusable. While I’m fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated. Accordingly, I have fined Kobe $100,000. Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society.”

@Telus: what makes you so sure homosexuality is a choice? why would someone choose to make things harder for themselves? why would someone choose to make themselves the victim of hate and discrimination?

  • http://slamonline.com Rocksinmypants

This like every other posting on here about lebron or kobe is just going off track. Do others say stuff like this all the time? yeah. is it right? no. just move the hell on, and enjoy the playoffs

  • irondan21

So what’s the problem? Now bigger fan of kb24

  • Gammack

    CCantrell
I get it. I mean elderly people having sex disgusts me, so on my days off I go to nursing homes and start throwing punches. F’ing these baby boomers up. I realize that they can’t help aging, but thats no excuse. I also realize that what they do in their bedroom in no way affects me, nor do I have to see it; however, sometimes I like to sit and think about it just long enough that I want to become physically violent about it.

  • tomtom

    Well said gammack.

  • Gammack

    Telus,
While there is not alot of evidence there is some. There is over 450 species documented to show signs of homosexuality. Also, it seems to be moderately heritable, particularly in men. The best scientific explanation I can give you is one that involves the hypothalamus. People that are homosexual that are exposed to a scent derived from that of the same sex (testosterone, estrogen) registered the olfaction of the smell , but their hypothalamus did not (the hypothalamus is your sexual arousal and response system). Sorry for the long post.

he got fined 100K – now that’s ridiculous. What he said was bad, but give me a break. he gets docked 3+ years of the average american salary for saying one word while he was angry. I mean the dude was wrong, but GTFOH with that fine.

  • Gammack

Also, that comes via a university textbook, not wikipedia.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

In ye olde English, a “f@ggot” is a bundled collection of dry sticks used for firewood. I think KB was really referencing that the refereeing during that stretch of play was dry, nonresponsive and only fit for burning….
… Look how worldly, well read and confident that man is.

  • DNz15′s

I honestly don’t think what he said was THAT bad though. I’ve heard worst things on the court before. It was in the heat of the moment. He was pissed. What can you do?

I mean, can’t we say the same thing about the word “b**ch” and “wh*re” (i didnt wanna get flag so i used asterisks.. haha

Those are derogatory terms towards females. Does that mean we are going to fine them for saying that too?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Telus i liked your post
Diesel my female best friend hates most uses of that word. I think many women do not like and many don’t care. That means it is.still offensive to a lot of people.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Piggybacking (no homo – ha) on Gammack’s comments, there are indeed “g@y” animals, animals that can actually switch gender, and animals that reproduce asexually. Sexual identity is a human construct. Cultural and religious standards make us think this stuff is so much more than it is.

  • Pharaoh

So how come “Kobe tell me how my ass taste” wasn’t seen as a shot at gays?

  • Telus Operator

To those who replied to me: There’s no way an exchange of ideas between us would ever be resolved. I am speaking from the worldview that we are all equally evil, and spitting on the sidewalk, or being in a bad mood separates us from God, just like homosexuality. Those things are symptoms of an inherently sinful condition that good or bad actions have nothing to do with. Gay people can be gay and it doesn’t bother me personally at all. Just don’t demand that I pretend that I don’t hear God telling me that homosexuality is man’s idea rather than His. And @GAMMACK: You didn’t read what I wrote about the moral equivalency of urges versus design.

  • Telus Operator

Basically, two dudes can’t make a baby without society, or mankind, stepping in to make it possible. A man and a woman will create new life so easily that it happens by accident all the time. If the creation of new life is a benchmark for a sexuality’s value, then homosexuality is pretty inadequate, isn’t it?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Inadequate is a tough word. I see where you are coming from and agree about sin. I would also note that most folks acknowledge that the primar drive among animals is to reproduce and animals that behave contrary to that drive are acting in an abnormal manner.
Now homosexuals argue that their urges may be a natural population control but I haven’t seen any real proof on that since lack of resources will always control population.
The point is THIS IS LARGELY IMMATERIAL!
Respect and kindness are mandates if all major religions. Using slurs is disrespectful and cruel, period. It is wrong to use them towards someone or as general conversation placeholders.
Just make the effort to stop. Try harder. Stop making excuses so you can remain comfortable. It really come down to that.

For a country that claims to have freedom of speech there are a lot of you here who sound like real phaggots*

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I wondered why TPU was so quiet, then I stumbled across this. Is it wrong of me to want my son to be heterosexual? If I knew how people became gay, I would make sure I did not do that particular thing with my son. Is this wrong? If my son was gay, it would take me a long time to get over it, is that wrong? I am of the opinion that homo sexuality is unnatural.

  • http://juanm.garcia@comcast.net TruthTeller

    Man up!

  • ClydeSays

Maybe some good came of this. Kobe’s comment brings all the bigots to light.

  • Fat Lever

C_cantrell, would you feel that same way if, hypothetically, your son(imaginary in this sense) told you he was gay? I’d be interested to see if you’d still “… think every f@g should be hung up in a tree, as there should be absolutely no room in this world for f@gs n if it was up to me, they would all be done away with nazi stlye” Better yet, if someone else felt that way and actually did that to your son, what would your reaction be? I find it hilarious that people judge other people on what they do behind closed doors more than on the actual merit of who they are.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

In my personal experience there are two of the people I “grew up with” that turned out homsexual. Both are men, both were not surrounded by male or even masculine infliuences (one danced, competitively, as the only guy at his whole academy or whatever it’s called, the other was the prsuct of a single parent home (father) who worked constantly, always had women “high-maintenance” women babysitting, he also had weird rules like the kid never had his hair cut till he was 8, so both grew up “different” then every other guy I grew up with/around. And all of them are heater sexual, ao from my personal experience it depends entirely on the situation you grew up in. (also nobody, in either of their extended families turned out homosexual just them)

Hetero*, so* sorry this is from the phone

    Tough.

  • vtrobot

Thanks to Fat, Izzo, Ryan, Allen, and the others posting who have a brain and basic respect for others living on this planet. I do LOVE free speech and like the point that Diesel makes too tho. Words have as much power as we give them. Peace and good night.

  • RobbieJay

    That picture is priceless

  • Fat Lever

Another thing I find hilarious is people who say being homosexual is a choice. Yea, because every kid wants to grow up tortured, ostracized, and treated generally as a plague on society. And nbk, I understand that is your personal experience, but there are more than 2 homosexuals in the world.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Freedom to speech does not apply to your job or regular life. It only applies to.the governments ability to restrict your comments. That is it.
learn your rights before you complain

  • Jackie Moon

Amazing no one has brought up that Michael Jordan called Kwame Brown a flaming f@ggot repeatedly. There’s Kobe again, just ripping off MJ!

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

@nbk, when doling out fines, income should be taken into consideration. A $100k fine hurts Kobe about as bad as a $10k fine hurts Joel Anthony. That being said, Stern’s judgement was a statement fine.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Homosexuality is not a new phenomenon at all. The ancient Greeks practiced homosexuality out in the open–not only homosexuality, but pederasty too (man and child… that I won’t argue is a little disturbing, especially for our times). And yet, we living in the West consider the Ancient Greeks one of the greatest civilizations in human history.
Homosexuals have existed in this world for a long, long @ss time. Some of the greatest thinkers, artists, and people of this planet–especially in the United States–were gay. None of this should be new to you.

  • Tony

I don’t think Kobe meant it offensively towards the LGBT community. However, when preachers say that “homosexuals are going to hell” or when people say gay people should not be married, they don’t mean it offensively – they just want to help??? Did his comment offend some, yes. Did his comment help any, no. Should he be fined $100,000…I don’t think so…and I am Gay!
My concern is “what will the commission do with the $100,000 collected from Kobe”? Will they donate it to the LGBT community – the one they are so “supportive” about???

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ c_cantrell: Wow your comment was both disturbing and incredibly stupid. Nazi-style? Sounds like you’ve got a lot more in common with the Nazis than you’d care to admit–and that disturbs me. Do yourself a favor and seek some help.

  • JJ

    He clearly said Funny Frappe’

He was lamenting his poor choice in pre-game drink.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

And just to clarify: pederasty and homosexuality are far from the same thing.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Don’t agree with the comment or fine.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

A little disturbing teddy? They had entire complexes dedicated to pedophelia. They were called gymnasiums. Yep that is where that word comes from.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ Okay, little is too little of a word.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

We should not be surprised at certain comments regarding this post, either. Some people come up here and exact derogatory and hateful comments predominantly AND frequently on many posts.
We shall not judge them. We shall educate them.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ TruthTeller: You sir, are a f*cking idiot. If you’re going to quote the bible like it’s rule of law on homosexuality, why not mention the passages that condone slavery and make it perfectly okay. Or the passages that preach the subservience of women, or the slaughter of people in foreign countries? Would you like me to quote some passages for you too?
Unless you also h@te women and think slavery is perfectly okay, it’s probably the smart thing to STFU.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’m not trying to disrespect anyone’s religion, but we all know the Bible has a lot of outdated and controversial verses (especially Old Testament)–and it is far from a “perfect” book, despite all of its virtues.
Is the Bible a great book? Of course.
But wow does it p!ss me off when people use a book they consider holy to preach h@te. I mean, are you serious?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Is the Bible a great book? Of course. Is Christianity a beautiful religion? Of course it is. (Minus the fundamentalist and prejudiced fanatics present in almost every religion, including Christianity–who use their religion as an excuse for committing sins of their own).

Who cares about educating about this topic, This topic is old and Stern had no choice but to get Kobe, Kobe said what alot of ballers call each other. I used this word in school to other kids and so did some of yall. If the word hurts you, look at the man in the mirror. Its just a word, Also saying NI***A and BI**H is more offensive words to me that saying what Kobe said. But America is so bent of making everyone feel good about themself even though I do not care about this group of folks, so I like this. Because I know Kobe is getting mad that this has blow up like this leading on ESPN after the witch hunt on Barry Bonds. America is jacked up and this is extra motivation for Kobe to get a ring and not say nothing to fake Stern in the end. I understand, Stern knows Money flows from everyone, so make people feel he stood up to Kobe, but in the end its about the MONEY!!! BOOK IT!!

    As for the Bible…

@Telus “Just don’t demand that I pretend that I don’t hear God telling me that homosexuality is man’s idea rather than His”.

Touche, considering most people in my country consider the idea of ‘God’ or a supernatural power an idea of man. I.E. it is a cultural construct.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    @The Seed:
You do not “care about these group of folks”?
    How becoming.
You, who has frequently described AND expressed your passion and knowledge of the Written Word?
You, who have an apparent belief in the Word?
Then according to the Word, you are not living in the ways of the Word, for we shall love one another as we love ourselves, no?
Why do you not care for “these group of folks”, my good brother? If you love thy brethren, according to the Law of God, then you care about them too, right?

  • blakos

@Telus: If there is no design, the law is a construct of man. That means homosexuality isn’t morally wrong, because there is no subjective moral standard to compare one behaviour to over another. But that also means that murder is also not ‘wrong’. The dead person would have died anyway. Everything will be gone someday. There are no consequences, ultimately. BUT if there is a design, then physiology is a better indicator of design than behaviour. Gay people say their urges are natural and built-in. People have urges to murder, too. Me and my wife can make a baby, raise it, and provide for it without a third party’s involvement. That’s natural marriage.
Again all ideas of morality are culturally learned, as in learnt through contact with ones society, family etc. Therefore the idea or homosexuality as immoral or against nature is not preordained by a supernatural power, it is an idea implemented by previous historical societies.
