Video: Steve Nash Shows Support For Marriage Equality

The Suns points guard takes a stand.

If we’ve learned one thing from the controversy that’s surrounded Joakim Noah after the Bulls center slipped up last night, it’s that social issues and sports are far from mutually exclusive. Steve Nash is further proof of this, as he stands up for a cause he believes in in this new TV spot.

I officially now dislike steve nash! its wrong, and it shouldn’t be allowed.
But this is what the worlds coming to, and its very sad!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

He turned gay after getting a black baby?

  • Jono

It’s bull. I think this is his coming out party.

  • http://slamonline.com Rocksinmypants

So when do we get to see an athlete make a commercial opposing gays? I mean freedom of speech right?

  • vtrobot

@ Rocks: Thankfully, you might not get to see that one anytime soon. Do you understand the difference that Steve’s ad promotes EQUALITY and your ad would promote INEQUALITY? Apparently Kyle Korver is filming an ad that opposes black athletes after what LBJ did to him last night.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uk3FWToczA EJ

I always knew a lot of sports fans are ignorant homophobes, but I never thought it was this bad. Benn0, you’re sad and wrong.

  • http://slamonline.com Rocksinmypants

lol good one about Korver. I get the whole equality bit. On another note though, doesn’t that make it seem like anyone who disagrees on this matter is an evil close minded person?

  • Fat Lever

Rocks, they already did film the other side to this argument. For proof, look to Game 2 of the 2011 ECF starring Joakim Noah or the LAL-SAS game in April starring Kobe Bryant.

  • amir

not evil, but close minded: yes.

  • http://slamonline.com Rocksinmypants

Oh ok I’ll check those commercials out Fat. I’m neither saying I agree or disagree on the matter. All im saying is when people cry for equality they must realize that there are those who may disagree with their point of view as is their right.

  • Marvin

Really brave for Steve Nash to promote equality even though there are thousands of fans that are ignorant about the issue and may negatively affect their view of Nash.

  • irondan21

Yuck, now whose going to be my favorite white point guard.

  • thomas

Gotta love Steve Nash for his intelligence on and off the court…

  • http://slamonline.com BigBlockMopar+Basketball

1st comment by Benn0, all you need to read.

  • http://slamonline.com BigBlockMopar+Basketball

Steve Nash sincerely believes he’s helping, (and he’s a good person for sure) but gay marriage is an abomination against God. Nash is sincerely wrong.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

damn the nba is getting soft, first handchecking, now this.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Benn0 and irondan21 are 2 for 2! Fantastic…
And Rocksinmypants, no offense but your argument makes no sense whatsoever. Bigots are not a “group” in America that needs promotion or protection. Bigots DO have the freedom to say what they want only by LAW, which does not mean the workplace. But hey, if you want your favorite player to commit career suicide, then yeah, stand up for their right to film an anti-gay commercial!
And why the hell would anyone, especially gay people, *respect* the views of a bigot?
I just love when racists, homophobes, etc. try to reverse the outrage and make it appear as if they’re the ones being victimized. ROFL. (not that I’m calling you a bigot).

  • http://slamonline.com Rocksinmypants

It’s ok if you are calling me a bigot. Maybe I am maybe I’m not. You could call me anything you’d like, seeing as how it’s just words. see how that works? Was the fan Noah called a F@gg0t actually gay? What about the ref Kobe called the same name? So all in all at the end of the day they’re just words with no malicious intent directed towards gays. No one has a problem with the players saying Fu(&? But theres a problem with a word that has more than one meaning? Everyones too sensitive these days.

  • logues

    read the bible stevie

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Rocksinmypants: It’s not about whether or not the fan in question was gay…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

logus, I’m willing to bet that you probably haven’t read the bible cover to cover.

  • logues

ur right i havent but any christian should know that its against God’s beliefs , and to be completely honest im actually in the process of reading the entire bible, u should give it a try teddy

  • snasty10

most of you are just ignorant, its kind of sad you guys would throw nash under the bus for standing up for what he believes in, and all you religious f**** are to close minded to even argue with

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ logues: You do know that the Protestant Church of Scotland has allowed gay people to become ministers, right? There ARE gay Christians regardless of what it says in Leviticus… Also, despite the biases in government and media, nowhere in the constitution does it say that America is a Christian nation, so the argument that it’s against Christianity does not and should not apply to the law–especially in regards to marriage. Case closed.

  • G$

Unreal. Ballers cheat on their wives (cough Kobe) every day of the year and you don’t hear a peep from the holy rollers about the sanctity of marriage or abomination against God. But when Steve calls for equal rights its time to break out the Bibles and get yer holier-than-thou on. If you really want to protect the institution of marriage then ban divorce and adultery. And if ya hate gays, at least be honest enough (cough Hardaway) to just say it instead of hiding behind the Bible. Ya know the (old testament) Bible also frowns on the eating of shellfish and the wearing of mixed fibers. Odd how ya don’t hear a lot about that. And if you do read the New Testament you’ll find Jesus didn’t waste a lot of time bashing gays, he was too busy standing up for the poor and downtrodden.

  • LeBron de Con

Don’t bend down to pick up a bar of soap in the shower with Nasty around, he’ll get you in the end.

  • logues

teddy: u win and are really smart, just let me go try to google some stuff for a counter argument real quick that will make me sound smart and ill get back to u. and just becasue some church allowed gay ministers doesnt change the fact of what it says in the bible itself

  • http://www.danchamb.com.br Lz – Cphfinest3

    Good work Steve Nash.

  • CeeLowe

From an outsiders opinion, the USA would have to be one of the least accepting and unfriendly country’s in the world. Do you guys actually like anyone? Any time I read comments on an American web site they are nearly entirely homophobic or racist. Your all just filled with hate huh?

  • al29

Another reason Steve Nash is awesome. Some of the other people posting on here need to grow up.

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

If you put a healthy young man and a healthy young woman in a room together long enough new life will just start popping up all over the place. A man and a woman are so well-designed for the creation of new life that we actually have to go to great lengths to stop it from happening. Even if we didn’t have a word for the institution of marriage it would be clear that there is something very special about a relationship that creates new life.

If a same-sex couple wants a baby, they require a third party. They require society. My marriage would be a marriage even if we didn’t have a word for marriage. Their marriage is a man-made societal institution. Pass the law, but it won’t change anything.

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

I just want to add that, as a Christian, I’m somewhat in favor of passing the same-sex marriage law. That’s what free will is about. I wouldn’t treat anyone differently just because they’re gay. I trust the Bible when it says that it goes against God’s plans for our lives, but the only person whose sex life we should judge is our own.

  • Zarfan

The Bible and Christianity in general oppose abortion, yet if the baby chooses to be gay in the future, they’d rather shove the baby back into the womb. Save a life only to not let it live. Where’s the sense in that?

  • tbillz

haha y’all calling Nash soft? look at yourselves, crying about something as stupid as marriage equality.. Who gives a fu(k if people can get married to who they want?! If doing so is really something God punishes for, then he will punish those who take these actions, not YOU. Find something important to actually get up in arms about in this country, such as the failed prison system, the current budget deficit, our deteriorating education system, the current war, the terrifying power of corporations, etc. wake up people.

  • Sam J

Can’t believe the attitudes of people on here, what is it, 1950? If you wish to live your life by what’s in a book which was written by the same people who thought the earth was flat, that’s up to you. It doesn’t mean the rest of society has to conform to it, people have the right to believe what tey want, and spend their life with who they want.

  • http://slamonline.com BigBlockMopar+Basketball

Too bad it ISN’T 1950. When kids actually had respect (a little anyway) and we didn’t waste so much time texting, blogging, commenting on videos :) And we are concerned about the war.

  • Ian

Those without sin cast the first stone.

  • angus

think steves been punched in the nose too many times, some athlete (would be awesome if it were kobe or noah) needs to come out with an anti gay slogan.

  • tbillz

ummm, okay bigblock. that made sense

  • http://dsjkflf.com Jukai

“If there is a man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, one who commits adultery with his friend’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.”
    -Leviticus 20:10
So, who here is a Kobe fan??????

  • Sam J

Angus = a prime example of why abortion should be legal…

  • http://dsjkflf.com Jukai

Honestly I’m really just tired of fake poser christians picking and choosing what to hate on and what not to.
What Christian has ate shellfish? YOU’VE DONE SOMETHING ON PAR WITH HOMOSEXUALITY.
What Christian is a bit of a lush? YOU’VE DONE SOMETHING ON PAR WITH HOMOSEXUALITY.
Who here has cheated on their loved one? YOU’VE DONE SOMETHING WORSE THAN HOMOSEXUALITY.
Incest? Well, actually, that’s ok. Genesis 19:30-36.
Owning a slave? Er, well, okay, that’s cool too. Exodus 21 is full of that.

  • al

so you don’t like steve nash because of what he is saying? what does that have to do with ow he plays basketball? Why are not basketball players from the hood so ignorant when it comes to this sh!@. Get comfortable with your own sexuality and stop taking it out on other show are comfortable with theirs.

  • al

Screw what the bible says if it leads to hate and ignorance…what about love and acceptance?
Last I checked that was what the bible was about….
you think J.C. would hate on gay people? really would he? Or would he love them unconditionally
? who gave you the right to judge other people?

  • http://dsjkflf.com Jukai

al: Actually, Jesus never mentions homosexuality at all. But I guess some Christians feel they know more than Jesus and feel they can judge.

  • youngmuggsy

Comments like these make me thankful I don’t live in a backwards country like America.

    PS. God doesn’t exist.

  • Brickshooting J

    I co-sign and applaud G$’s and Jukai’s comments.

  • vtrobot

@ youngmuggsy: love the P.S. That’s why I don’t read the Bible. I’m not a fan of fiction. I always love how the “religious” people are often the ones with the most hate towards others. We are pretty messed up over here. Everyone worried more about everyone elses sh*t than their own. Bunch of Real Housewives. I pray that reference doesn’t even make sense in your country. Peace everyone. ONE LOVE.

  • snasty10

btw the bible is more like a guideline how to live your life, you’re not suppose to take everything literally

  • FoCo

Even if louges weren’t wrong he would lose his argument simply because he can’t type “you”…

  • youngmuggsy

You can’t pick and choose from the Bible and then claim it’s the source of your morals. If you think stoning children to death for being disobedient and committing genocide is bad then the Bible obviously isn’t the guideline for life, you’re simply imposing your own subjective morals onto it.

  • Yann Blavec

Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve !! :)
    Nash is being heterophobic.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

The problem is marriage grants people specific rights and privileges. So by excluding certain people from it, you’re discriminating. If you want to say that [group X] can’t be baptized because it’s what your relgious doctrine teaches, that’s fine because people that have been baptized don’t have any rights or privileges different from non-baptized folks. Also, quit picking and choosing which parts of Leviticus you want to endorse.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Co-sign LA Huey 100%.
@ Yann Blavec: Please tell me you’re joking. You’re joking, right?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Although, a lot of gay people are Christian and Catholic too. And a lot of gay people were baptized as children. Just saying.

  • Yann Blavec

    I was joking of course.

  • Yann Blavec

I’m french and I’d like to know where in the US gay marriage is legal. Do they have the right when married to adopt children ? Thanks.

  • tiny32gball

I think about it like this; if the catholic church wants to say “NO NO NO go to hell you f**s”, then they should’ve never let the priests rape the little alter boys. And they shouldn’t have church groups going to soldiers funerals and ruining those families opportunity to put their loved ones to rest. Homosexuals are only asking for equal rights, not special rights. Just in case any of you were confused with what we’re asking for.

And yes that means I, as a D1 athlete for a school in SC, am a lesbian and proudly applaude Grant Hill, Jared Dudley, and Steve Nash for doing their part to make the world safer for gays and lesbians.
