Videos: Dikembe Mutombo

A collection of Deke’s blocks, dunks, and finger wags.

In honor of his 45th birthday, here’s video of Dikembe Mutombo at several points in his NBA career. One of the greatest shot-blockers ever, Mutombo’s defensive impact was much greater than indicated by the box score, as entire offensive gameplans were hindered by his relentless mindset on the boards and in the paint. Off the court, Mutombo is a well-known humanitarian, helping in various efforts across the globe. With Dwight Howard, Josh Smith, Serge Ibaka and others on the defensive rise, it’s time to pay homage to a legend. An 8-time All-Star, 4-time Defensive Player of the Year, and model citizen, Mutombo is a solidified icon, not  just athlete. Happy Birthday, Deke!

    Just 45..
I thought he was like 49 when playing for Houston..

Nice… Now that its offseason, isnt time to start back up on the “for old times sake” topics??

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Man, the refs/NBA let Shaq get away with so many bullsh!t offensive fouls that series against Philly. Deke played really well too.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Nah I don’t want to sound bitter; the Lakers were the better all-around team that year. All I’m saying is, Shaq did commit a lot of fouls.

LMFAO, the Lakers sucked, until Jerry West gifted them Pau Gasol. CRAP.

  • giogolo

Is it just me or does anybody else think that Dikembe is the black Arnold Schwarzenegger?

@Zarky you realize what Lakers team Teddy is talking about right? The one where Kobe & Shaq were still running strong.

  • el_larsen

all time respect to the answer A.I for bringing this poor phila tem to the finals!
and he won game 1 all alone

  • giogolo

^ no such team as winning one game alone..ever. otherwise if it’s 1 on 5 it would be Dodgeball.

Where does my mama rank in the all-time center list? Is she better than Ewing?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Dikembe might be Top 10 or 15 when it comes to all-time Centers

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Would you rather have a healthy young Deke or a healthy young Yao Ming?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

    Healthy young Deke.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

By young I mean prime. I don’t know… I feel like Yao never really got to reach his prime, and when he did, he never really had a chance to “explore” it for long. Offensively Yao put up twice the buckets Deke did, but Deke was incredible on defense. Shame he never tried to take on a greater scoring role, ’cause he had the size and even the moves to do it (as we can clearly see in that Nuggets/Bulls game embedded above).

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Ehh…probably prime Deke. Granted Prime Yao is a better scorer, but Prime Deke is a better rebounder and an all-time great defensive big man.

  • http://zarky01 zarky

@BlackPhantom- dude i was talkin bout the 05-06 Lakers. Look at the score, Rockets up 20 on them LOL

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Lol yeah the 05-06 Lakers were terrible. Kobe & Lamar were the ONLY good people on that squad

  • http://jsdklfl.com Jukai

Teddy: Uh, don’t take TOO much from those highlight footage. It’s crazy that even though I know he hit them, everytime he takes that jumpshot, I swear to god I still think it’s gonna brick. Even in a highlight video.
A prime Yao Ming vs a prime Deke is a tough question. For one game, I would take a prime Yao Ming. But for a season, I’d take a Prime Mutombo, cause I don’t think prime Yao could last a season.

  • Ryan

Don’t compare Dikembe Mutumbo to Arnold, it’s insulting to Dikembe. I loved that Philly squad even though they didn’t win they were a far, far better team, more hustle, more heart… the Lakers just had that big mfer.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

A prime Mutombo cannot guard a prime Yao Ming…

  • Yesse

Ryan, how can you say that Lakers have less heart if they actually won the championship back then? The team with most heart always wins. By the way, “that big mfer” was pretty much the only player ever to slam Deke down without getting blocked as much as Dikembe’s other rivals. Dikembe was even blocking Mr. Bynum when he was the oldest active player in the league.
