For Old Time’s Sake: Vol. 2

BEAST MODE

Gotta pay homage once again to VC and the greatest in-game dunk of all time. Add in the announcers, KGs reaction, and the below from Weis’s Wikipedia page… and you have a masterpiece.

Le dunk de la mort”

Weis is known for having been “posterized” by the United States‘ Vince Carter during a basketball game between the two teams at the 2000 Summer Olympicson September 25, 2000. After getting the ball off a steal, the 6’6″ (1.98 m) Carter drove to the basket, leaped, spread his legs as he jumped over 7’2″ (2.18 m) Weis, and ferociously dunked the ball. The French media dubbed the slam “le dunk de la mort”: “the dunk of death.” The US won the game 85-75.[5] (Wikipedia)

  • Remo Williams

@Tano, Best dunk of all time.

  • Hurricane

I remember when this happened and everyone was scared we would never see the replay due to some stupid tv rights and who broadcast it. Stupid media crap. Fortunately, we are able to see it, albeit sparingly. Damn, Vince was the best in-game dunker ever. ‘Nique was great, but no one has come close to topping VC.

Miss the old VC, dude’s springs in his legs had springs in their legs!

  • Overtime

How pissed must Weis be at the guy who made the turnover?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

This is my favorite dunk of all time…I remember I watched the replay like 75 times in a row after it happened. Unbelievable…

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Prime VC was a beast but no one yet till this day can compare to prime Dr. J. I’m not talking about early 80s 76′s Julius, I’m talking ABA-late 70s Doc. No one can match his athleticism and that includes MJ, DWilkins, VC and Bron.

  • celts4ever

best dunker of all time. kg lol

I never get tired of watching this dunk. Just sick! And yes, Carter is the best dunker of all time.

  • http://www.pablasso.com pablasso

@JTaylor21, you’re embarrasing yourself trying to sound old school. Dr J is nowhere near VC, please.

  • http://hansdeiter33@gmail.com Bmack

Look no one is saying VC is the greatest player of all time.(However I personally feel with his talent and body type, if he had proper work ethic he could of been something really special.) But if you say that he isn’t the greatest dunker of all time, you don’t watch, know, or play basketball. How quickly some of you forget.

  • BRAVO

When vc played for my city Toronto he ripped everyone ! Best dunker of all time, lmao demar derozan will b next !!

  • theDankerNuggets

i wonder what was going through VC’s mind before and after this dunk

    Greatest Dunker of All-Time

  • Garrett

@theDankerNuggets: Probably something like, “Man, that was a lot of work. I better take the next few plays off.”

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

I remember watching these games. Vince was being hailed as the Next-Maybe-Even-Better Jordan by the Olympic media (who are almost always ‘general sports’ journalists and have no idea about basketball) but he had a pretty terrible series, marred by a spoiled and arrogant attitude. One game he fell over a referee because he wasn’t looking where he was going, stopped running up the court to talk trash to the ref, who inexplicably didn’t tech him, earning some serious boos from the crowd.

  • Sydney2000

I was at this game with a friend. When the dunk happened I stood up in shock (like most people ). When I looked over to see my mates reaction, he had his head down and was looking at his camera. I will never forget the look in his eyes. He tried to pretend he had seen it and I did’nt press him on the matter, I felt too sorry for him.

i remember when somebody tried to jump over me. i undercut him and laid him on his back. weis should have done the same but he not so smart is he

I’m an old head who grew up watching Dr J (dozens&dozens of trips to the Nassau Coliseum in the 70′s, including both championship games)and I have to say that if you aren’t old enough to have witnessed the throw-downs he was doing back in those days, you have no idea of what this guy was capable of doing. So many fans exposure to Doc began at the time the leagues merged. He was YEARS passed his dunking prime at that point! I remember like it was yesterday something he said during a press conference the day after the Nets FIRST championship(1974!).A reporter asked if he planned on dreaming up any new dunks over the upcoming summer. Doc laughed and said “I can still do what I’ve gotta do, but, unfortunately, MY GREATEST DUNKING DAYS ARE BEHIND ME”. This was YEARS before the merger! I love Vince as much as anybody, but I saw both careers and Vince’s best doesn’t even approach what Doc was doing in the early 70′s.

    @Supercool…..Tom Chambers?? GTFOH

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

What did Dr J do Russ…….?

  • http://zarky01 zarky

@ Philo… uhhhh thats Vince Carter, not LeBron “one man travelling show” James. ha ha. LONG LIVE LEbum!

  • Garrett

Yeah, did Dr. J put his arm through the rim? Did he jump over any 7-footers? Did he cram windmills while looking down through the net? Dr. J was great and brought a lot of style and flair to the dunk, but he was no where near the power house that Vince was in his prime. Vince killed it on everyone, all the time, when he was younger. And he didn’t just glide to the rim, he jumped over, around, and through guys.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Lol @zarky!

  • http://www.pablasso.com pablasso

@Russ (aka JTaylor): Dr J was 23 or 24 when he said that in 1974, while he may have been more explosive before that I hardly doubt there was a lot of difference. Vince himself was 23 when on these olympic games and in the 2000 dunk contest, and he still was amazing until 30 with the nets.

Sadly there’s not a lot of footage of pre-NBA Dr J, but he wasn’t old by any means by the 1976 dunk contest.

  • http://www.pablasso.com pablasso

Besides, it’s not just about athletic ability.

  • Russ M

    Garrett:
Doc’s dunks on 7’2″ Artis Gilmore are legendary. And I’m not talking about once or twice, or during some meaningless regular season games. He did this countless times in 4th quarters of playoff games. And I’m sure that somewhere on the web you can find footage of him yolkin’it in Kareem’s face in the 1977 al-star game. In fact, I think he did it twice in that game. Fellas, I got no reason to exaggerate any of this. Just sharing what I saw with my own eyes.

  • http://www.pablasso.com pablasso

I’m just leaving this here, in case someone forgot VC and thought this was a lucky dunk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNmU1esUF4k

He’s the only NBA player better, or at least at the same level, that street dunkers like Air Up There.

    KG’s reaction: “ANYTHING’S POSSIBLLLLLLLLLLE!”

Glove’s reaction: “What the hell is Vin Baker doing here?”

  • http://www.twitter.com/nflem41 Nicolas Fleming

This isn’t a dunk, he clearly grabbed the rim.

  • Jer dawg

Goosebumps! 0-44″ in 1/2 second explosion all on Weis’ @$$! VC was on a level on his own dunking on people. Windmills, reverses, up and under, lobs. Jordan dunked on and over people, but they were f you dunks on people. Dominique, same way. F you dunks. Vince is kind of like, MUTHAF&@$&*% YOU and I am destroying you and your block, your city, your state, your country with stuff reserved- for -practicing- alone- with -a -buddy,- but I’m gonna pull it off because- I can.

  • marc

i dont get why there is an argument between Dr. J and VC. I’m sorry to say it but VC wins this battle. VC jumped over dude and ended his nba career before it even started. Its not by a landslide but VC out jumps Dr. J. Dr. J just paved the way for Vince and many other dunkers.
