Video: John Wall vs Julius Hodge at Pro-Am

A Julius Hodge sighting!

(H/T: TBJ)

Julius Hodge is an entertaining and funny guy. The NC Pro-Am is showy and boastful, and he played into that well, talking about his great defense on twitter after the game. But when you’re playing John Wall in his hometown of Raleigh, boasts may not behoove the situation. The Wizards PG sunk the game-winning free throws with 0.9 seconds left to get the 73-71 victory Tuesday night. Hodge captained his team to a game-high 20 points and often guarded Wall on the defensive end. More highlights of the battle here and here.

    adelaide 36ers ftw

  • kbj

    1:45 is just rude

  • JAy

This isn’t technically John Wall’s hometown (Raleigh). The NC pro-am is at NC Central University, in Durham. Both Hodge (NC State) and Wall (Raleigh native) have roots in the area. It’s not a stretch to say Hodge is even more popular here, since he was around when State was last decent.

  • http://Yahoo! Chris Mullin’s Accent

    Play at 1:05… ridiculous.

  • T-Money

damn, i’m not sure why julius was always coming back for more.

WTF is up with those uniforms??? Hodge is wearing a smedium short and halter top combo.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Good thing it wasn’t Chris Paul v. Julius Hodge.

  • robb

    Can’t guard him

  • doyouwantmore

He didn’t “caption” his team. He “captained” his team. I know spell-check is great and everything but when the written part of a piece for the site is only a paragraph long, is it so hard to get someone to read it just once? Its the decline of frickin’ Western civilization up in here.

Wow at that between-the-legs-in-the-air-no-look-from-behind bounce pass. Nasty stuff.

    my bad wrong video

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

JWall has a chance to be a better PG than Westbrook/Rose in 3 yrs and Hodges wonders why he’s not in the L anymore. All that clapping and pounding the floor like he’s KG and he couldn’t even keep dude out of the lane once.

  • Zack

I love it when people bash someone else’s grammar with incorrect grammar of their own.

  • http://dsfjklf.com Jukai

JTaylor: C’mon, Hodges was just having fun with a kid he knew was gonna destroy him. Don’t hate.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Juk’s you just told JTaylor not to hate. That’s like telling a fish not to swim.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

    1 Clap hands together
    2 Smack the court
    3 Get abused

  • Hurricane

@ Boing – I know right. With that formula you would think Hodge played at dook.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

JWall needs to play like this in NBA games, someone saying he has a chance to be on Westbrook and Rose level is HIGH. BOOK IT!!

  • Tuomas

To be honest, I’da rather also seen what Hodge did on the other end. So, crappy highlights.

  • Wolfpacker69

Can we get another montage of the turnovers John Wall inevitably committed?

  • http://dude Chukaz

john wall has the potential to be better than both rose and westbrook in 2 years. i think he’s the best pg in the league in 3 years. he’s real good and he’s more of a pure point than both rose and westbrook. can’t wait til we see him put it together like rose did this season.

  • JB

big turn out for a Pro-Am. Wall was out @ the Seattle run 2 weeks ago

  • Justin G

Did somebody say Wall has a chance to be better than D’Rose…..Kill yourself

  • Justin G

You do kno Rose never missed the playoffs …. He led his college team to the title game….and won wo state titles in highschool….And wtf did Wall do Dance!!!!….Don’t get me wrong Wall will be top 5 but don’t ever say he will be better than the Mvp who is 22…….

  • Justin G

How old is Wall 20 he did 5 years in highschool so he really is 08…..Rose is 07 …..He dosen’t jump higher, he’s not faster,he’s not stronger, and for him to even be next to D’Rose…..

  • Justin G

He must make the Allstar Game like Rose did in his second year….Yes over Rondo,D’Will and who ever else….Wall is an amazing talent ,but Rose should not be compared to anybody at the point except MAYBE!!!! Westbrook maybe….

  • http://www.thekevinburkeproject.com KB

Hodge is one of the most overrated players to come out of NY in a long time. Never understood the hype. Still don’t.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Love John Wall, but gotta agree with some of the comments here. The youngest MVP ever. First team all-nba at 22, 2 all-star games, playoffs each year. best record in the league (year 3). ROY. Please, just wait a moment, Rose is not done evolving as a player. If he’s the youngest MVP ever and he can get ALOT better don’t think Jwall will just surpass him.

  • LP

If John Wall scored 12 points, and Hodge had 20, i’m missing something. I know Wall’s team won but, Julius Hodge didn’t get baked or anything. A player just hit a few jumpers on him, he contained his man and outplayed him. He won his matchup.

  • Bx Baller

It’s a BIG if, but if J Hodge had been focused on his game and body from day 1 of being in the league he would still be a starter today. He has more talent than 90% of the 9-12 roster guys in the league now and he has that “it/swagger” factor you can never teach. Just another NYC wasted talent.

  • Jay

Ya’ll do realize Rose only landed on the Bulls because they were coming off an injury plagued season, right? That 33 win season was an aberration, since it followed a 49 win season. In short, the Bulls lucked into adding a great player to an already good team.

Wall got drafted by a legitimately awful (and already rebuilding) Wizards team. Only an idiot would expect him to make the playoffs in year one, so chill. His ceiling is right up there with Rose’s and he’s a better distributor. His rookie season was just as good as Rose’s (check the numbers).

  • Showtime

People are slow they didn’t say he better than Rose he has the tangibles to be in the coming years. He has better size , better vision, longer , is bit faster and has better commitment on D-fence. Rose has a better jumper and better body control when in air. but the comparison is not that off base.

  • Dre

Hodge is not more popular in NC than John. Hodge is kind of a running joke there… more of a clowning crazy acting guy. John can be as good or surpass Rose if he has Rose’s work ethic. The only reason Rose got the ROY is because B. Griffin was not a rookie then. Anyone who knos basketball knows that. Wall just had the unfortunate rookie year of going up against Blake. He would have got ROY all the way back until Lebron’s rookie year. No one put on a show like he did and that span of years.

No LP, Wall was almost never on Hodge… Hodge would have his teammates to set up picks so they could switch and get a different player on him. Hodge scored most of his points flashing in the post and scoring 2 feet from the basket. John won the one on one match up easily.

Hodge was not that talented and rated terrible in athletic ability which is a most have for his position.

BTW John Calipari said that John Wall is bigger stronger and has a better court vision than Rose. He should know he coached them both.

  • Showtime

@dre actually blake came out in 09 not 08. So tyreke would be the one no having the ROY. but in normally universe it would been rose in 08, Blake in 09 and Wall in 10.

  • http://Yahoo! Chris Mullin’s Accent

The Wizards are going to be fun to watch, especilly if Vesely pans out. With their youth and talent I could see them turning into a poor man’s version of OKC.

  • seriousblack

Justin and the rest of the Rose d*ck riders please calm down! Wall is just as athletic as Rose when healthy. He’s slightly quicker. He’s not as strong but he’s already a much better distributer. He just finished his 1st NBA season so comparing accomplishments is just stupid. No one on here claimed he was just as accomplished. Rose’s jumpshot was just as bad during his rookie season. Those who are comparing Rose’s third season to Wall’s 1st are just plain idiotic. If Wall works on his shot, sorry Rose-peddlers. He will definitely be better than Rose and Westbrook. By his third season we’ll all see just how much better.

  • Justin G

Just one question …..Who has won more in there career…..Wall didn’t make it 2 the Title game and he had Cousins….And stop saying he’s just s athletic clown because he’s not D’Rose is by far the most athletic point in NBA history……….

  • seriousblack

Justin: Reading is fundemental. And what “career” do either of them have to speak of? You mean the whopping one year they spent in school? Neither of them won a chip so whatever point you thought you were making is irrelevent. They have a combined four seasons as pros, so I need you to simmer down. Questioning Wall’s athleticsm clearly shows you don’t know much about him, or haven’t seen enough of him for your opinion to be valid. Even coach Cal aknowledged that Wall will most likely be better. The fact that he’s coached them both while you’re just a Rose fan says enough. Lastly, think about this: the only two areas where Rose currently has major advantages, (strength & jumpshot), can easily be improved with offseason work. The fact that Wall is quicker, taller, just as athletic, and a way better distributer makes it almost certain that he will be better. Only injury can prevent it.
