Videos: NBA Stars as Rookies

Vince, Garnett, Shaq, Kobe and more…

by Eldon Khorshidi / @eldonadam

It’s crazy how time flies. Iverson’s gone, Jordan’s history. Shaq—well, the real Shaqis a distant memory. KG has 16 seasons under his belt, Vince Carter is officially irrelevant, and the majority of teenagers today are absorbing Kobe Bryant as #24, not #8 with the Crazy Eights and the stylish afro.

On one hand, it’s good; a younger, newer breed of ballers are infusing newfound life, talent, and awe into the best league on planet Earth. On the other hand, it’s scary. But regardless how you look at it, it’s reality. Stars come and go, no matter how great they are at a given point in time. Before you know it, we’ll be asking how many more years Bron, Wade, and Melo have left in the tank. It may seem lifetimes away, but the day is creeping up on us faster than we realize.

The point here is that we gotta do our best efforts to savor these memories because they’ll be gone in the blink of an eye. Above are 10 video clips of select NBA stars in their rookie seasons, leaving their imprint on the game from day one and helping us fans freeze time and capture the moment. From a 18-year-old Kobe Bryant to an infant-like Kevin Garnett to the GOAT himself, the raw talent, athleticism and swag on display was truly remarkable.

    Yeah, this is crazy. LeBron remains fun to watch, but back then he was likeable too, with a lot fewer tattoos. Then you have Shaq, from whom Blake Griffin stole the screen and roll then dunk on dude.

    No JKidd rookie mix?

  • cramzy

    Lebron the homie but I will argue to the death that Melo was robbed of Rookie Of Year in 04. They could have at least co-’d that thang ala Grant Hill/ J. Kidd or Brand/Franchise.

    Shaq should have never left Orlando. Those guys had so much fun.
    Funny to see the Chris Morris sighting and Billy O in the Bean video.
    Let me watch the rest.

    @NJ4Life I couldn’t find any Kidd highlight reels… there were a few single-game clips, but that’s it. It’s Unfortunate.

    Im lovin these trips down memory lanes. Even NBATV has been showing sum old 90′s playoff games.

  • Yann Blavec

    I had never seen the block KG had on Sir Charles before. I also read in Slam magazine the best piece of advice KG was given as a young player. It was Sam Mitchell who said to him not to “bring home the problem he had had on the floor.”

    Vince was amazing

  • Yann Blavec

    I also read in Slam magazine someone say about :” it’s easy to stop a 330 pounder who isn’t moving. It’s harder to stop one who is moving.”

  • marc

    damn dwight is one of my favorite center but shaq would have destroyed him. lol

    Orlando Shaq was an athletic freak. Also, his first ever NBA score was a TURN-AROUND JUMPSHOT (!)

    kg=da kid,big ticket!!my fav all time

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

    @Teddy – must have been his only one that season. His turnaround was flat-out awful in Orlando.

  • slamfan4life

    Young MJ reminds me of DRose now……….WOA

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

    Garnett looks like a fetus! lol. Thats my favorite player of all time, loved the vid. And I just don’t get how people can hate of Vince. Outside of MJ, he’s the most exciting player I’ve ever seen… eff it, in terms of shear athleticism, in his prime he was even more exciting than MJ to me. That reverse dunk on Mullin, the dunk on Dikembe when he seemed to just hang in the air forever, the 1 handed 360 spinning the opposite direction, the dunk contest, “he jumped… OVER his head!?” the list goes on and on.
