Videos: Yao’s Top Moments

Barring injuries, Yao was an unstoppable force.

by Dylan Lowther / @OntheDylanL

Yao Ming was much more than a basketball player; he is arguably the most significant foreign player to ever play in the NBA. He was a true ambassador and without him, basketball in China wouldn’t be nearly as popular as it is today.

Let’s not get anybody confused here, the guy was a very good basketball player, among the very few centers in today’s game who could defend, shoot, rebound and post-up. He was a special talent, and barring injuries, there is no doubt that Dwight Howard would have to fight for the title of best center in the League. Check out the gallery above for some of his best moments in the NBA.

Great to see his play getting some love on here – whilst he was a fantastic ambassador for the game, lets not forget how dominant he could be (albeit sporadically). A great guy who energised Houston for a spell, it’s just a shame it couldn’t be longer. One of the truly good guys in the league, and I for one will miss him.

I MAY JUST BE AN UNFROZEN CAVEMAN LAWYER, AND I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW AN 8 FT TALL CHINAMAN GOT INSIDE MY COMPUTER MONITOR, AND I MAY NOT KNOW HOW THE CONVERTIBLE TOP WORKS ON MY BENZ, BUT YAO WAS CERTAINLY A FORCE ON THE PLANET AND ON THE COURT. THE BASKETBALL WORLD IS SADDER WITHOUT HIM.

I love Yao and all, and it’s sad that dude was forced to retire too soon due to injuries…
But y’all didn’t give Shaq this much love! What’s up?!

Damn, Yao was schooling Shaq there…So sad he’s forced to end it. I’m hoping he changes his mind when he gets better in retirement.

I often wonder what Yao would have been like if his bones and joints could take the stress of his size and he’d never been injured. Supposedly, he could actually *jump* even, when he was a teenager, before the first of his major injuries forced him to play a slow, ground-bound game. Human beings just aren’t meant to be that large, but it captures my imagination, thinking about a Yao Ming who had a little bit of athleticism on top of his size and skill, and the 16 year career he might have had. On the bright side, at least Yao got to play a few uninjured seasons, whereas I’ve already given up on Greg Oden.

solid posts bros. Nice to see some respect. In my eyes, going from a 9 year old to a 17 year old watching his game, he caught my eyes more often then not and deserves the HOF right. He Got Game fellas, Yao had the touch.
