UPDATE WITH VIDEO: Georgetown and Chinese Team Have Ugly Brawl

UPDATE: Here’s the video via Sports Grid

Like many college teams this time of year, Georgetown is overseas, playing a series of games against international opponents. Unlike many other teams, one of these games ended in a brawl.

The Hoyas are in China right now, and while details are sketchy at this point, according to Gene Wang of the Washington Post, benches cleared in the fourth quarter, with bottles and chairs being thrown at the team. John Thompson III pulled the team off the court, and the game ended.

You can find a few pictures here that show the gravity of the incident, and for now, that is all the information there is.

    Their government will have something to say about their behavior in this incident. However, it could be bunch of Chinese kids listening to angry Western music that influenced this. Who knows what influenced them? 50

    The youtube-ification of Slamonline’s comments section progresses at an alarming rate.
    A ‘person’ makes a remark about monkeys from GT represening (spelling be damned, eh u racist c*nt?) and nobody reacts.
    This is a disgrace. More and more xenophobic comments are being posted on what was once the most interesting bball forum around.
    If there ever was a time to start implementing the section rules stated below (where’s your annoyed reaction now, Susan), it would be now, before this place turns into yet another hate-fest like can be found allover the www.

    I often wonder if it makes more sense to ignore or engage. Ignoring can seem like condoning, but engaging only gives stuff credence. I just engaged in a heated argument with some former classmates over a bigoted Facebook status they were passing around, and while I brought some perspective, I doubt I changed any minds. It’s a tough decision.

    They got into it with Brazil last year.
    It shows a total lack of good sportsmanship, I hope this event and the one last year are more isolated incidents than the norm.
    And they’re lucky they faced a John Thomspon III team and not one of the 80′s/90′s John Thompson Jr. teams cause had that been the case…poor them.
    As for the oppressor, just another person who wouldn’t ever say that in the real world but has brass balls online cause they can hide behind a screen name.

    Again? Man, this is disappointing. The Chinese are starting to get a reputation for their poor sportsmanship after also fighting with Brazil. I’m not surprised though because American players do talk a lot of trash and show up their opponents but that’s a big no no in Chinese culture. They’d rather fight than lose face.

    the chinese refs were CHEATING! for china which got georgetown players and coaches frustrated, theres a report a chinese player yelled in JT3′s so that couldve also led to fighting

    Bayi Rockets. I knew that name sounded familiar.
    It’s a team of army cats. They play in the CBA but their members are also in the People’s Liberation Army.
    So in other words this was a bunch of soldiers fighting with a bunch of college kids.
    That makes it even worse, in my opinion, if you’re in the military and lack the discipline to not let a trivial exhibition basketball game escalate into an all-out brawl.

    Co-sign ktokyo. Chalk it up to cultural differences. Trash talking is a universally accepted part of basketball here in the States, but the Chinese likely view it as disrespectful. Of course Chinese ppl aren’t Japanese ppl, but they’re both Asian, and the whole seppuku thing in Japan was all about honor. Honor and shame are big parts of their cultures, but that’s just one armchair idiot’s opinion.

    They have video on worldstar. Link is below. Seems that one of the Georgetown players took another blow and got pissed so he threw a forearm. He subsequently got rushed and some dude ran from off court to get the stomp in. Then the world explodes and everyone gets to swinging.

    Chinese team started it. The ball was loose and two of their players pretty much threw a hoyas player to the ground. He got pissed and shoved one of them and they all jumped him. By the time the rest of the georgetown team realized what was happening he was getting jumped by everyone, and every idiot official or person in charge watching didn’t even bother to stop it until it was too late.

    the idiocy in here aside – this fight was terrible. a professional team acted that way? regardless of who started the altercation, there was no reason for 4 Chinese Players & 1 staff member/reserve player to rush the one Georgetown player, not in that fashion. And the non-jersey wearing guy immediately started stomping the Georgetown kid. Whatever really caused this needs to be explained to me, cuz this just looks really bad, wouldn’t be surprised if the NCAA bans their teams from doing these out of the country anymore.

    Regardless of who started it, we’ve got a college, amateur team going up against a professional basketball team, and they did not in the least act in a “professional” manner.
    These are grown-a** men, in their late 20’s and 30’s, stomping on 19, 20 year old kids. As I pointed out before, grown-a** men who serve their COUNTRY and are thus representatives of not only their team, but their military and country as well.

    After reading a bit more about the incident, seeing the video, and taking into account that the Chinese team was professional vs. college kids, this is a ridiculous, shameful act by the pro team. The pro team was acting like a bunch of 7th-graders?!! There should be a genuine, public apology from the pro team to Georgetown University. I’ve played in foreign countries as the only visible minority and experienced being a spectacle to fans, etc. and it is very hard to maintain your cool when the opposing team, refs and fans are against you. Plus it was the HOME TEAM that lost its cool!! Pathetic.

    You know, obviously the Chinese team should be punished for this… but that aside, I really feel the college teams should be warned about this. This isn’t the NBA or NCAA. The chinese national team is KNOWN for this… it looks like that kid thought he’d be in a one-on-one style brawl with everyone else separating it. He went right after the chinese guy who pushed him (from the video anyway) and didn’t expect the others to crowd him. The Georgetown kids had no idea what was going on, and quickly got stomped.
    Once again, this isn’t the NBA. This is serious.

    The way the Chinese Team and fans acted were absolutely disgraceful. As a Chinese person I’m really embarrassed and shamed by this. If the CBA/Chinese Authorities had any class they should punish the Bayi Rockets big time.

    @ Jukai: The Chinese team isn’t the same team that brawled with Brazil. These guys are a CBA team. The other brawl was the national team. However, like Enigmatic said, the Bayi Rockets are a team of freaking army men… Not exactly a fair fight against 18-19 year old college kids. Both side shouldn’t have done what they did, though. It was an exhibition game, for crying out loud.
